Abstract
The electrochemical behavior of oxygen (O2) in blood was studied using boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrodes. Cyclic voltammogram of O2 in a 0.1 M phosphate buffer solution solution containing 1 × 10-6 M of bovine hemoglobin exhibits a reduction peak at -1.4 V (vs Ag/AgCl). Moreover, the scan rate dependence was investigated to study the reduction reaction mechanism, which was attributable to the reduction of O2 to H2O2 via two electrons. A linear calibration curve was observed in the concentration range of 86.88-314.63 mg L-1 (R2 = 0.99) with a detection limit of 1.0 mg L-1 (S/B = 3). The analytical performance was better than those with glassy carbon or platinum electrodes as the working electrode. In addition, an application to bovine blood was performed. The O2 concentration in the blood measured on the BDD electrodes was compared to that measured using an OxyLite Pro fiber-optic oxygen sensor device. Both methods gave similar values of the O2 concentration in the range of ∼40 to 150 mmHg. This result confirms that BDD electrodes could potentially be used to detect the O2 concentration in blood.

Abstract
Boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrodes present several notable properties, such as the largest potential window of all electrode materials (especially in anodic potentials), low background and capacitive currents, reduced fouling compared to other electrodes, mechanical robustness, and good stability over time. On the other hand, flow-based systems are known as well-established approaches to minimize reagent consumption and waste generation and with good compromise between sample throughput and analytical performance (mechanization of chemical assays). This review focuses on the use of BDD electrodes for electrochemical detection in flow systems, such as flow injection analysis (FIA), batch injection analysis (BIA), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and capillary electrophoresis (CE). The discussion deals with the historical evolution of BDD, types of electrochemical pre-treatments (cathodically/H-terminated or anodically/O-terminated), cell configurations, and analytical performance. Articles are discussed in chronological order and subdivided according to the type of flow system: FIA, BIA, HPLC, and CE.

Abstract
Nowadays, modified electrodes with metal nanoparticles have appeared as an alternative for the electroanalysis of various compounds. In this study, gold nanoparticles (GNPs) were chosen as interesting metal nanoparticles for modifying of carbon paste electrode (CPE). GNPs and the gold nanoparticles-modified carbon paste electrode (GNPs/CPE) were characterized by UV–Vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). GNPs/CPE as a simple and sensitive electrode was used to study three important biological molecules: folic acid (FA), uric acid (UA) and ascorbic acid (AA). Square wave voltammetry (SWV) was used as an accurate technique for quantitative measurements. A good linear relation was observed between anodic peak current (ipa) and FA (5.2 × 10−6 – 2.5 × 10−5 M), UA (1.2 × 10−6 – 2.1 × 10−5 M) and AA (1.2 × 10−6 – 2.5 × 10−5 M) concentrations in simultaneous determination of these molecules.

Abstract
The quantification of genotoxic impurities (GIs) such as hydrazine (HZ) is of critical importance in the pharmaceutical industry in order to uphold drug safety. HZ is a particularly intractable GI and its detection represents a significant technical challenge. Here, we present, for the first time, the use of electrochemical analysis to achieve the required detection limits by the pharmaceutical industry for the detection of HZ in the presence of a large excess of a common active pharmaceutical ingredient (API), acetaminophen (ACM) which itself is redox active, typical of many APIs. A flow injection analysis approach with electrochemical detection (FIA-EC) is utilized, in conjunction with a coplanar boron doped diamond (BDD) microband electrode, insulated in an insulating diamond platform for durability and integrated into a two piece flow cell. In order to separate the electrochemical signature for HZ such that it is not obscured by that of the ACM (present in excess), the BDD electrode is functionalized with Pt nanoparticles (NPs) to significantly shift the half wave potential for HZ oxidation to less positive potentials. Microstereolithography was used to fabricate flow cells with defined hydrodynamics which minimize dispersion of the analyte and optimize detection sensitivity. Importantly, the Pt NPs were shown to be stable under flow, and a limit of detection of 64.5 nM or 0.274 ppm for HZ with respect to the ACM, present in excess, was achieved. This represents the first electrochemical approach which surpasses the required detection limits set by the pharmaceutical industry for HZ detection in the presence of an API and paves the wave for online analysis and application to other GI and API systems.

Abstract
New membrane-protein based electrodes were prepared incorporating cytochrome bo(3) from E. coli and gold nanoparticles. Direct electron transfer between the electrode and the immobilized enzymes was achieved, resulting in an electrocatalytic activity in presence of O(2). The size of the gold nanoparticles was shown to be important and smaller particles were shown to reduce the overpotential of the process.

Abstract
The Cu/Pd bimetallic system electrodeposited on boron-doped diamond (BDD) films for application, as electrode material in the electrochemical reduction of nitrate was studied. The electrochemical behavior of Cu, Pd, and Cu/Pd bimetallic system was evaluated by cyclic voltammetry. From these results, the formation of the Cu/Pd composite was verified. In addition, Cu with different phases and a Cu/Pd phase in the composite were obtained. Morphological analysis by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed a homogeneous distribution of Cu/Pd bimetallic particles with intermediary dimensions compared to those observed in Cu or Pd electrodeposits separately. These composites were tested as electrocatalysts for nitrate reduction in Britton-Robinson buffer solution (pH 9). Electrochemical measurements showed that composites with higher Cu content displayed the best electrocatalytic activity for nitrate reduction, and the Cu/Pd phase in the bimetallic system served to improve the Cu adherence on BDD electrode.

Abstract
Gold nanoparticles were prepared by electrochemical deposition on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) and boron-doped, epitaxial 100-oriented diamond layers. Using a potentiostatic double pulse technique, the average particle size was varied in the range from 5 nm to 30 nm in the case of HOPG as a support and between <1 nm and 15 nm on diamond surfaces, while keeping the particle density constant. The distribution of particle sizes was very narrow, with standard deviations of around 20% on HOPG and around 30% on diamond. The electrocatalytic activity towards hydrogen evolution and oxygen reduction of these carbon supported gold nanoparticles in dependence of the particle sizes was investigated using cyclic voltammetry. For oxygen reduction the current density normalized to the gold surface (specific current density) increased for decreasing particle size. In contrast, the specific current density of hydrogen evolution showed no dependence on particle size. For both reactions, no effect of the different carbon supports on electrocatalytic activity was observed.

Abstract
A novel high-throughput technique has been developed for the investigation of the influence of supported metal particle size and the support on electrocatalytic activity. Arrays with a gradation of catalyst particle sizes are fabricated in a physical vapor deposition system that also allows selection of the support material. Simultaneous electrochemical measurements at all electrodes in the array, together with determination of the actual particle size distribution on each of the electrodes by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), then allows rapid determination of the activity as a function of catalyst center size. The procedure is illustrated using data for the reduction of oxygen on gold nanoparticles supported on both substoichiometric titanium dioxide (TiO(x)()) and carbon and the conclusions are verified using voltammetry at rotating disk electrodes. Gold centers with diameters in the range 1.4-6.3 nm were investigated and it is demonstrated that, with both supports, the catalytic activity for oxygen reduction decays rapidly for particle sizes below 3.0 nm. This may be observed as a decrease in current at constant potential or an increase in the overpotential for oxygen reduction.
