Abstract
The use of renewable energy is essential for the future of the Earth, and solar photons are the ultimate source of energy to satisfy the ever-increasing global energy demands. Photoconversion using dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) is becoming an established technology to contribute to the sustainable energy market, and among state-of-the art DSCs are those which rely on ruthenium(ii) sensitizers and the triiodide/iodide (I3 -/I-) redox mediator. Ruthenium is a critical raw material, and in this review, we focus on the use of coordination complexes of the more abundant first row d-block metals, in particular copper, iron and zinc, as dyes in DSCs. A major challenge in these DSCs is an enhancement of their photoconversion efficiencies (PCEs) which currently lag significantly behind those containing ruthenium-based dyes. The redox mediator in a DSC is responsible for regenerating the ground state of the dye. Although the I3 -/I- couple has become an established redox shuttle, it has disadvantages: its redox potential limits the values of the open-circuit voltage (V OC) in the DSC and its use creates a corrosive chemical environment within the DSC which impacts upon the long-term stability of the cells. First row d-block metal coordination compounds, especially those containing cobalt, and copper, have come to the fore in the development of alternative redox mediators and we detail the progress in this field over the last decade, with particular attention to Cu2+/Cu+ redox mediators which, when coupled with appropriate dyes, have achieved V OC values in excess of 1000 mV. We also draw attention to aspects of the recyclability of DSCs.

Abstract
Thermoelectric materials represent a new paradigm for harvesting low-grade heat, which would otherwise be dissipated to the environment uselessly. Relative to conventional thermoelectric materials generally composed of semiconductors or semi-metals, ionic thermoelectric materials are rising as an alternative choice which exhibit higher Seebeck coefficient and lower thermal conductivity. The ionic thermoelectric materials own a completely different thermoelectric conversion mechanism, in which the ions do not enter the electrode but rearrange on the electrode surface to generate a voltage difference between the hot and cold electrodes. This unique character has inspired worldwide interests on the design of ionic-type thermoelectric converters with attractive advantages of high flexibility, low cost, limited environmental pollution, and self-healing capability. Referring to the categories of ionic thermoelectric conversion, some representative ionic thermoelectric materials with their respective characteristics are summarized in this minireview. In addition, examples of applying ionic thermoelectric materials in supercapacitors, wearable devices, and fire warning system are also discussed. Insight into the challenges for the further development of ionic thermoelectric materials is finally provided.

Abstract
The data presented in this article is related to the research article entitled “Electrochemical and electronic properties of a series of substituted polypyridine ligands and their Co(II) complexes” (Ferreira et al., 2019). This data article presents electrochemical data of five polypyridine ligands, as well as of the three redox couples of each of their corresponding five polypyridine-containing Co(II) complexes. All complexes exhibit two Co-based redox couples (CoIII/II and CoII/I), as well as a ligand-based reduction of the Co(I) complex.

Abstract
Thermo-electrochemical cells (also called thermocells) are promising devices for harvesting waste heat for the sustainable production of energy. Research into thermocells has increased significantly in recent years, driven by advantages such as their ability to continuously convert heat into electrical energy without producing emissions or consuming materials. Until relatively recently, the commercial viability of thermocells was limited by their low power output and conversion efficiency. However, there have lately been significant advances in thermocell performance as a result of improvements to the electrode materials, electrolyte and redox chemistry and various features of the cell design. This article overviews these recent developments in thermocell research, including the development of new redox couples, the optimisation of electrolytes for improved power output and high-temperature operation, the design of high surface area electrodes for increased current density and device flexibility, and the optimisation of cell design to further enhance performance.

Abstract
The electrochemical behavior of cobaltocenium (Cc(+)) on a Au(111) electrode was investigated in five 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide ([Cnmim][Tf2N], n = 2, 4, 6, 8, or 10) ionic liquids (ILs) in the temperature range from 293.15 to 343.15 K by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The redox couple of Cc(+) exhibited a clear reversible one-electron reaction in all the [Cnmim][Tf2N] ILs. The diffusion coefficients of Cc(+) increased with an increase in the alkyl chain length of [Cnmim](+) and a decrease in the viscosity of the IL upon elevating the temperature. The viscosity of the IL plays an important role in determining the activation energy for the diffusion of Cc(+). The obtained results suggested that the alkyl chain length of [Cnmim](+) affects the strength of the interaction between Cc(+) and the surrounding ion species. The results also clarified that the equation proposed by Sutherland adequately describes the diffusion of Cc(+) in ILs when the effect of the type of IL and the temperature on the product of the Stokes radius of Cc(+) and the Sutherland coefficient is considered.
