Abstract
Direct formic acid fuel cells (DFAFCs) have gained immense importance as a source of clean energy for portable electronic devices. It outperforms other fuel cells in several key operational and safety parameters. However, slow kinetics of the formic acid oxidation at the anode remains the main obstacle in achieving a high power output in DFAFCs. Noble metal-based electrocatalysts are effective, but are expensive and prone to CO poisoning. Recently, a substantial volume of research work have been dedicated to develop inexpensive, high activity and long lasting electrocatalysts. Herein, recent advances in the development of anode electrocatalysts for DFAFCs are presented focusing on understanding the relationship between activity and structure. This review covers the literature related to the electrocatalysts based on noble metals, non-noble metals, metal-oxides, synthesis route, support material, and fuel cell performance. The future prospects and bottlenecks in the field are also discussed at the end.

Abstract
Synthesis of non-Pt bifunctional electrocatalyst for the anodic oxidation of liquid fuel and cathodic reduction of oxygen is of great interest in the development of energy conversion devices. We demonstrate a facile room-temperature synthesis of surface-engineered trimetallic alloy nanoelectrocatalyst based on Co, Cu, and Pd by thermodynamically favorable transmetallation reaction and electrochemical dealloying. The quasi-spherical Co xCu yPd z trimetallic catalysts were synthesized by the thermodynamically favorable reaction of K2PdCl4 with sheetlike Co mCu n bimetallic alloy nanostructure. The surface engineering of Co xCu yPd z was achieved by electrochemical dealloying. The surface-engineered alloy electrocatalyst exhibits excellent bifunctional activity toward formic acid oxidation reaction (FAOR) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at same pH. The elemental composition and lattice strain control the electrocatalytic performance. The elemental composition-dependent compressive strain weakens the adsorption of oxygen-containing species and favors the facile electron transfer for FAOR and ORR. The engineered alloy electrocatalyst of Co0.02Cu13.8Pd86.18 composition is highly durable and delivers high mass-specific activity for ORR and FAOR. It delivers mass-specific activities of 1.50 and 0.202 A/mgPd for FAOR and ORR, respectively, in acidic pH. The overall performance is superior to that of as-synthesized Pd and dealloyed bimetallic Co2.7Pd97.3 and Cu5.61Pd94.39 nanoelectrocatalysts.

Abstract
Development of a Pd-based catalyst with highly active and durable properties for formic acid oxidation reaction at the anode remains an important matter of interest in the research community. Herein, we have designed novel coal-based carbon fibers (Coal-CFs) with dicyandiamide (DCD) as nitrogen (N) source, triphenylphosphine (TPP) as phosphorus (P) source dual-doped to support Pd catalysts (Pd/NP-Coal-CFs(DCD/TPP)), which exhibit superior catalytic performance toward formic acid oxidation reaction. Mass activity of formic acid oxidation of Pd/NP-Coal-CFs(DCD/TPP) catalyst is 536.6 mA·mg-1Pd, which is 2.5 times higher than that of Pd/Coal-CFs catalyst. The higher specific surface areas, exclusive electron transport path, and the high synergistic interaction of N and P are the favorable phenomena for catalytic performance. The addition of coal not only increases the abundant defects sites but also makes the utilization of coal with high added value. This N and P dual-doped catalyst inspires an idea for promoting applications in practical fuel cells.

Abstract
Controllable preparation of nanopores to promote the performance of electrochemical biosensing interfaces has become one of the researching frontiers in biosensing. A double biocatalysis signal amplification of glucose biosensor for the study of electrochemical behaviors of glucose oxidase (GOx) was proposed by using horseradish peroxidase biosynthesized porous graphene (PGR) as the platform for the biocatalytic deposition of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The biosensor showed a linear range from 0.25 to 27.5 μM with a detection limit of 0.05 μM (S/N = 3) towards glucose. Furthermore, the proposed AuNPs/GOx–PGR modified glassy carbon electrode (AuNPs/GOx–PGR/GCE) achieved direct electron transfer of GOx.

Abstract
Two types of PdCu2 nanoparticles were prepared through one-pot synthesis and a two-step reducing process, named as PdCu2-1 and PdCu2-2, respectively. The morphology and structure of as-prepared samples were investigated by transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry. Results showed that more Pd atoms were buried in the inside of PdCu2-1, whereas more available Pd sites were distributed on the surface of PdCu2-2. The electrochemical measurements indicated that both PdCu2-1 and PdCu2-2 nanoparticles showed a higher electrocatalytic activity than that for pure Pd nanoparticles. In particular, PdCu2-2 predictably exhibited a better stability and durability as well as a lower onset potential and a higher catalytic current density than that of PdCu2-1 toward ethanol oxidation in alkaline media. On the basis of these studies, the formation mechanisms of both the PdCu2 catalysts and the relationship between their structure and properties were discussed in this paper.
