Synthesis of oxygen deficient bismuth oxide photocatalyst for improved photoelectrochemical applications

Development of Bi2WO6 and Bi2O3 - ZnO heterostructure for enhanced photocatalytic mineralization of Bisphenol A

Present study proposed the synthesis of mixed p-type and n-type nanocomposite heterostructures by co-precipitation method. The as-synthesized heterostructures were characterized through different characterization techniques. The as-synthesized Bi₂WO₆ and Bi₂O₃-ZnO heterostructures were tested as photocatalysts during the photodegradation of Bisphenol A (BPA). The Bi₂O₃-ZnO heterostructure nanocomposite was found to be a more effective photocatalyst than Bi₂WO₆. The effect of operating parameters including catalytic dose (0.02-0.15 gL^-1), initial BPA concentration (5-20 mgL^-1), temperature change (5-20 °C) and solution pH changes (4, 5, 7, and 8) were evaluated with Bi₂O₃-ZnO under UV-light irradiation by selecting a 300 W Xe lamp. More than 90% BPA was degraded with 0.15 gL^-1 Bi₂O₃-ZnO, keeping 1.0 mM H₂O₂ concentration fixed in 250 mL of reaction suspension. The HPLC and GC-MS were used to detect the reaction intermediates and final products. A plausible degradation pathway was proposed on the basis of the identification of reaction intermediates. Repeatability test analysis confirmed that the as-synthesized catalyst showed superb catalytic performance on its removal trend. The kinetics of degradation of BPA were well fitted by the power laws model. With the order of reaction being 0.6, 0.9, 1.2, and 1.3 for different operating parameters, i.e., catalyst dose, initial pH, temperature, and initial BPA concentration.

Photodegradation Process of Organic Dyes in the Presence of a Manganese-Doped Zinc Sulfide Nanowire Photocatalyst

Zinc sulfide (ZnS) nanowires represent a promising candidate in many fields, including optoelectronics and photocatalysis because of their advantages such as excellent optical properties, chemical stability and an easy-scalable simple synthesis method. In this study, an energy-friendly microwave radiation process was used to develop the single-step, solvothermal process for the growth of manganese-doped zinc sulfide (ZnS) and undoped nanocrystals (NCs) in the forms of nanowires using two short amines as a stabilizer, e.g. ethylenediamine and hydrazine, respectively. ZnS nanowires doped with Mn atoms show absorbance in UV and in the visible region of the spectrum. The photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B in the presence of Mn-doped and undoped ZnS nanocrystals illuminated with only a 6-W UV lamp has been comprehensively studied. The effect of Mn doping and the presence of a nanocrystal stabilizer on the degradation process was determined. It was found that the efficiency of a photocatalytic degradation process was strongly affected by both factors: the doping process of nanowires with Mn2+ atoms and the attachment of ligands to the nanocrystal surface.

Bismuth Oxide Faceted Structures as a Photocatalyst Produced Using an Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Jet

The photocatalyst bismuth oxide, which is active under visual light, was deposited using an atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ). Sixteen different samples were generated under different parameters of the APPJ to investigate their catalytic activity. The prepared samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), laser scanning microscopy (LSM), and UV–vis diffuse reflectance absorption spectroscopy. The measured data, such as average sample thickness, coverage ratio, phase fraction, chemical composition, band gap, and photocatalytic performance were used for comparing the samples. The XRD analysis showed that the deposition process produced a mixed phase of monocline Bi2O3 and tetragonal Bi2O2.33. Using the Rietveld refinement method, phase fractions could be determined and compared with the XPS data. The non-stoichiometric phases were influenced by the introduction of nitrogen to the surface as a result of the deposition process. The band gap calculated from the diffuse absorption spectroscopy shows that Bi2O2.33 with 2.78 eV had a higher band gap compared to the phases with a high proportion of Bi2O3 (2.64 eV). Furthermore, it was shown that the band gap was dependent on the thickness of the sample and oxygen vacancies or loss of oxygen in the surface. All coatings had degraded methyl orange (MO) under irradiation by xenon lamps.
