Ultrafast rate capability of V2O5 yolk-shell microspheres with hierarchical nanostructure as an aqueous lithium-ion battery anode

Scalable Self-Assembly of Composite Nanofibers into High-Energy-Density Li-Ion Battery Electrodes

The application of nanosized active particles in Li-ion batteries has been the subject of intense investigation, yielding mixed results in terms of overall benefits. While nanoparticles have shown promise in improving rate performance and reducing issues related to cracking, they have also faced criticism due to side reactions, low packing density, and consequent subpar volumetric battery performance. Interesting processes such as self-assembly have been proposed to increase packing density, but these tend to be incompatible with scalable processes such as roll-to-roll coating, which are essential to manufacture electrodes at scale. Addressing these challenges, this research demonstrates the long-range self-assembly of carbon-decorated V2O5 nanofiber cathodes as a model system. These nanorods are closely packed into thick electrode films, exhibiting a high volumetric capacity of 205 mA h cm-3at 0.2 C. This surpasses the volumetric capacity of unaligned V2O5 nanofiber electrodes (82 mA h cm-3) under the same cycling conditions. We also demonstrate that these energy-dense electrodes retain an excellent capacity of up to 190.4 mA h cm-3(<2% loss) over 500 cycles without needing binders. Finally, we demonstrate that the proposed self-assembly process is compatible with roll-to-roll coating. This work contributes to the development of energy-dense coatings for next-generation battery electrodes with high volumetric energy density.

Aqueous Organic Batteries Using the Proton as a Charge Carrier

Benefiting from the merits of low cost, nonflammability, and high operational safety, aqueous rechargeable batteries have emerged as promising candidates for large-scale energy-storage applications. Among various metal-ion/non-metallic charge carriers, the proton (H+ ) as a charge carrier possesses numerous unique properties such as fast proton diffusion dynamics, a low molar mass, and a small hydrated ion radius, which endow aqueous proton batteries (APBs) with a salient rate capability, a long-term life span, and an excellent low-temperature electrochemical performance. In addition, redox-active organic molecules, with the advantages of structural diversity, rich proton-storage sites, and abundant resources, are considered attractive electrode materials for APBs. However, the charge-storage and transport mechanisms of organic electrodes in APBs are still in their infancy. Therefore, finding suitable electrode materials and uncovering the H+ -storage mechanisms are significant for the application of organic materials in APBs. Herein, the latest research progress on organic materials, such as small molecules and polymers for APBs, is reviewed. Furthermore, a comprehensive summary and evaluation of APBs employing organic electrodes as anode and/or cathode is provided, especially regarding their low-temperature and high-power performances, along with systematic discussions for guiding the rational design and the construction of APBs based on organic electrodes.

Measuring the Pseudocapacitive Behavior of Individual V2O5 Particles by Scanning Electrochemical Cell Microscopy

V₂O₅ is a promising pseudocapacitive material for electrochemical energy storage with balanced power and energy density. Understanding the charge-storage mechanism is of significance to further improve the rate performance. Here, we report an electrochemical study of individual V₂O₅ particles using scanning electrochemical cell microscopy with colocalized electron microscopy. A carbon sputtering procedure is proposed for the pristine V₂O₅ particles to improve their structure stability and electronic conductivity. The achieved high-quality electrochemical cyclic voltammetry results, structural integrity, and high oxidation to reduction charge ratio (as high as 97.74%) assured further quantitative analysis of the pseudocapacitive behavior of single particles and correlation with local particle structures. A broad range of capacitive contribution is revealed, with an average ratio of 76% at 1.0 V/s. This study provides new opportunities for quantitative analysis of the electrochemical charge-storage process at single particles, especially for electrode materials with electrolyte-induced instability.
