Effects of biofuel on engines performance and emission characteristics: A review

Selectivity of reaction pathways for green diesel production towards biojet fuel applications

Green diesel is the second generation biofuel with the same structure as fossil fuels (alkanes), allowing this biofuel to provide excellent fuel properties over biodiesel such as higher energy content and lower hazardous gas emission. Generally, green diesel can be produced through the deoxygenation/hydrogenation of natural oil and/or its derivatives at 200-400 °C and 1-10 MPa over supported metal catalysts. This process comprises of three reaction pathways: hydrodeoxygenation, decarboxylation, and decarbonylation. The extent to which these three different pathways are involved is strongly influenced by the catalyst, pressure, and temperature. Subsequently, the determination of catalyst and reaction condition plays a significant role owing to the feasibility of the process and the economic point of view. This article emphasizes the reaction pathway of green diesel production as well as the parameters influencing the predominant reaction route.

Optimization of Bauhinia parviflora biodiesel production for higher yield and its compatibility assessment with water and Di-tert-butyl peroxide emulsion

The current study aims to attain a higher yield of biodiesel from Bauhinia tree seed wastes through process optimization using response surface methodology (RSM) and assess its compatibility in the diesel engine blended with water and Di-tert-butyl peroxide (DTBP). The Bauhinia parviflora biodiesel (BPB) transesterification originated using a fixed quantity of catalyst, and the transesterification process parameters such as oil-molar ratio (OMR), process temperature (PT), and reaction time (RT) were optimized. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS)analysis were applied to characterize and quantify the BPB, and ASTM standards were followed to measure the properties. The prepared BPB (30%) was blended with 10% water and 2% BTBP to enhance the performance and emission characteristics of the BPB in the diesel engine. The optimization result implies that the higher yield of BPB (91.4%) was attained for OMR of 9.2:1, PT of 76 °C, and RT of 67 min. The FTIR report indicates that the carbon-based components are pretty good in the prepared BPB. The GC-MS report indicates that the fatty acids are converted into corresponding methyl esters, and the measured fuel properties are within the prescribed limits. The diesel engine's performance is effectively improved for the BPB blended with water and DTBP. The proposed fuel's overall improvement in hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide, smoke, and oxides of nitrogen emissions is 27.2%, 34.9%, 16.7%, and 11.2%, respectively.

Design Optimization of a Gas Turbine Engine for Marine Applications: Off-Design Performance and Control System Considerations

This paper addresses a design optimization of a gas turbine (GT) for marine applications. A gain-scheduling method incorporating a meta-heuristic optimization is proposed to optimize a thermodynamics-based model of a small GT engine. A comprehensive control system consisting of a proportional integral (PI) controller with additional proportional gains, gain scheduling, and a min-max controller is developed. The modeling of gains as a function of plant variables is presented. Meta-heuristic optimizations, namely a genetic algorithm (GA) and a whale optimization algorithm (WOA), are applied to optimize the designed control system. The results show that the WOA has better performance than that of the GA, where the WOA exhibits the minimum fitness value. Compared to the unoptimized gain, the time to reach the target of the power lever angle is significantly reduced. Optimal gain scheduling shows a stable response compared with a fixed gain, which can have oscillation effects as a controller responds. An effect of using bioethanol as a fuel has been observed. It shows that for the same input parameters of the GT dynamics model, the fuel flow increases significantly, as compared with diesel fuel, because of its low bioethanol heating value. Thus, a significant increase occurs only at the gain that depends on the fuel flow.

Effect of Fuel Preheating on Engine Characteristics of Waste Animal Fat-Oil Biodiesel in Compression Ignition Engine

The present study aims at understanding the effects of fuel preheating on engine characteristics of waste animal fat-oil (WAF-O) biodiesel in a single-cylinder CI engine, with the preheating technique proposed as an effective means for enhancing the fuel properties. To understand the effects of the preheated fuel, the WAF-O biodiesel was preheated at 60, 80, 100 and 120 °C and tested along with neat diesel and unheated WAF-O biodiesel. For this purpose, biodiesel was produced from different animal wastes by means of KOH-assisted ethanol-based transesterification, reporting its maximum yield as 96.37 ± 1.8%, with significant distribution of unsaturated oleic acid, saturated palmitic acid and stearic acid. Upon evaluating its fuel characteristics as per ASTM D6751 standards, a rise in preheating temperature by 1 °C reduced the density and kinematic viscosity of WAF-O biodiesel by 0.383 kg/m3 and 0.025 mm2/s, respectively, and was explained by the weakening of intermolecular forces between its fatty acid ester molecules. Preheated samples reported superior combustion characteristics by exhibiting increased in-cylinder pressure (2.24%, on average) and heat release rates in addition to their shortened ignition delay (1−4 °CA). Furthermore, preheating of WAF-O biodiesel reduced its specific fuel consumption and increased its brake thermal efficiency by 7.86% (on average) and 9.23% (on average), respectively. However, higher preheating temperatures (>120 °C) resulted in increased fuel consumption owing to its varied flow characteristics. In addition to the changes in combustion characteristics, preheating WAF-O bio-diesel also resulted in reduced carbon monoxide, nitrous oxide and hydrocarbon emission by 13.88%, 7.21% and 26.94%, respectively, and increased carbon dioxide emission by 7.58%. Summing up, the enhancements in overall engine characteristics of preheated samples were accounted for by their improvised fuel injection characteristics due to their reduced density and viscosity, which ensured for their effective combustion.

Sustainable Aviation—Hydrogen Is the Future

As the global search for new methods to combat global warming and climate change continues, renewable fuels and hydrogen have emerged as saviours for environmentally polluting industries such as aviation. Sustainable aviation is the goal of the aviation industry today. There is increasing interest in achieving carbon-neutral flight to combat global warming. Hydrogen has proven to be a suitable alternative fuel. It is abundant, clean, and produces no carbon emissions, but only water after use, which has the potential to cool the environment. This paper traces the historical growth and future of the aviation and aerospace industry. It examines how hydrogen can be used in the air and on the ground to lower the aviation industry’s impact on the environment. In addition, while aircraft are an essential part of the aviation industry, other support services add to the overall impact on the environment. Hydrogen can be used to fuel the energy needs of these services. However, for hydrogen technology to be accepted and implemented, other issues such as government policy, education, and employability must be addressed. Improvement in the performance and emissions of hydrogen as an alternative energy and fuel has grown in the last decade. However, other issues such as the storage and cost and the entire value chain require significant work for hydrogen to be implemented. The international community’s alternative renewable energy and hydrogen roadmaps can provide a long-term blueprint for developing the alternative energy industry. This will inform the private and public sectors so that the industry can adjust its plan accordingly.
