The fractional patterns of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in the soil of the central Tibetan Plateau, China: the influence of soil components

Outdoor Atmospheric Micro-/Nanomineral-Mediated Organochlorine Pesticides in Sichuan Basin, China: Adsorption, Occurrence, and Risk Assessment

Atmospheric micro-/nanominerals play an important role in the adsorption, enrichment, and migration of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs). In the present study, the correlations between OCPs and minerals in outdoor atmospheric dustfall were investigated, and the correlations were used to speculate the source of p,p'-(dicofol+dichlorobenzophenone [DBP]), which is the sum of p,p'-dicofol and p,p'-DBP. Atmospheric dustfall samples were collected from 53 sites in the Chengdu-Deyang-Mianyang economic region in the Sichuan basin. In this region, 24 OCPs were analyzed by gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The average concentration of 24 OCPs was 51.2 ± 27.4 ng/g. The results showed that the concentration of Σ₂₄ OCPs in urban areas was higher than that in suburban areas (p < 0.05). Minerals in atmospheric dustfall were semiquantitatively analyzed by X-ray diffraction. The primary minerals were quartz, calcite, and gypsum. A Spearman correlation analysis of OCPs and minerals showed that low-volatility OCPs could be adsorbed by minerals in atmospheric dustfall. A density functional theory simulation verified that p,p'-(dicofol+DBP) in atmospheric dustfall was primarily derived from the p,p'-dicofol adsorbed by gypsum. Isomeric ratio results suggested that the samples had weathered lindane and chlordane profiles and confirmed that residents in the Sichuan basin used technical dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane. Finally, the OCPs were evaluated to determine the potential risk of cancer in adults and children from OCP exposure. Exposure to OCPs via atmospheric dustfall was safe for adults. The cancer risk for children exposed to OCPs was slightly lower than the threshold value (10^-6 ) under a high dust ingestion rate, which poses a concern. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in household dust: A systematic review on spatio-temporal distribution, sources, and health risk assessment

Much attention has been paid on polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in household dust due to their ubiquitous occurrences in the environment. Based on the data from 59 articles sampled from 2005 to 2020, we investigated the spatio-temporal distribution, sources, and health risk of 8 PBDE homologues in household dusts worldwide. BDE-209 is the predominant PBDE in household dusts, followed by BDE-99 and BDE-47. The total concentrations of PBDEs (∑₈PBDEs) are found to be high in household dusts sampled from 2005 to 2008 and show a significant decline trend from 2009 to 2016 (p < 0.05) and a little upward tendency from 2017 to 2020. The concentrations of PBDEs in household dusts vary greatly in different countries of the world. The use of penta-BDE is the main source of three to five bromo-biphenyl ether monomers contributing 17.4% of ∑₈PBDEs, while BDE-209 and BDE-183 are derived from the use of household appliances contributing 82.6% of ∑₈PBDEs. Ingestion is the main exposure route for adults and toddlers, followed by dermal contact. The values of hazard index (HI) exposed to PBDEs in household dusts are all less than 1 for both adults and toddlers, indicating a low non-cancer risk. The incremental lifetime cancer risks (ILCRs) of BDE-209 are less than 10^-6 for both adults and toddlers, suggesting a negligible risk. However, the total carcinogenic risk of toddlers is higher than that of adults, indicating that much attention should be paid to toddlers exposed to BDE-209 in household dust.

Soil-air partitioning of semivolatile organic compounds in the Lesser Himalaya region: Influence of soil organic matter, atmospheric transport processes and secondary emissions

After decades of imposed regulations about reducing the primary emissions of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), these pollutants are still present in the environment. Soils are important repositories of such persistent semivolatile organic contaminants (SVOCs), and it is assumed that SVOCs sequestered in these reservoirs are being re-mobilized due to anthropogenic influence. In this study, concentrations of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in soil and air, their fugacities, fluxes and the soil-air partition coefficient (K_SA) were determined for three different land cover types (glacial, remote/mountainous and urban) of the Lesser Himalayan Region (LHR). The concentrations of OCPs, PCBs and PBDEs in soils and air ranged between 0.01 and 2.8, 0.81-4.8, 0.089-0.75 ng g^-1; 0.2-106, 0.027-182, and 0.011-7.26 pg m^-3, respectively. The levels of SVOCs in the soil were correlated with soil organic matter (SOM) indicating that SOM is a substrate for the organic pollutants in soils. The Clausius-Clapeyron plots between ln P and inverse of temperature (1000/T) suggested that long range atmospheric transport was the major input source of PBDEs and higher chlorinated PCBs over the LHR. The uneven and wide distribution of local sources in LHR and up-slope enrichment of SVOCs explained the spatial variability and altitudinal patterns. The soils near mountain and urban lakes act as local sinks of SVOCs such as β-HCH, pp΄-DDT, CB-28, -118, -153, BDE-47, -99, and -154, with soil-air exchange fluxes tending more toward deposition. However, the soils near glacial lakes acted as local sources of more volatile congeners of α-HCH, γ-HCH, op'-DDT, pp'-DDE and lower to medium chlorinated PCBs such as CB-18, -28, -53, -42 and BDE-47, -99, with soil-air exchange tending more toward volatilization flux.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in sedimentary cores of Tibetan Plateau: Influence of global warming on cold trapping

Cold condensation is an important pathway for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) depositing at remote alpine lakes after long-range atmospheric transportation. However, in the context of global warming, the obvious temperature rise in the Tibetan Plateau (TP) might have an impact on the air deposition of PAHs by controlling the extent of cold condensation. To investigate the influence of rising temperatures on the atmospheric deposition of PAHs, two dated sedimentary cores from Pumoyum Co Lake (PC) and Selin Co Lake (SC) were collected, respectively and concentrations of 16 individual PAHs were measured. In both PC and SC, the total concentration of 16 PAHs presented relatively lower levels in four historical periods of "hot anomaly" including 1973-1975, 1988-1989, 1998-1999, and 2006-2007. This indicated that the hot temperatures might restrict the atmospheric deposition of PAHs. Besides, the results of the principal component analysis did discriminate those "hot anomalies". As the temperature kept increasing in TP, for low molecular weight PAHs and high molecular weight PAHs, the influence of rising temperatures on the cold condensation was different. Therefore, it was identified that the effect of global warming on the environmental fate of POPs cannot be neglected, especially in alpine regions like TP.

Historical trends of PCBs and PBDEs as reconstructed in a lake sediment from southern Tibetan Plateau

High-altitude lake sediment can be used as a natural archive to reconstruct the history of pollutants. In this work, the temporal distribution of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were determined using a high-resolution gas chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometer (HRGC/HRMS) in an alpine lake sediment core collected from the southern Tibetan Plateau (TP) to examine whether the expected decreasing trends due to the implementation of the international Conventions could be observed. The concentrations of PCBs and PBDEs in the sediment core were in the range of 11.8-142 pg/g dw and ND-457 pg/g dw, and their fluxes were in the range of 2.51-31.7 ng/(m²·yr) and ND-43.2 ng/(m²·yr), respectively. The prevalence of low-chlorinated (tri-CB) PCBs and low-brominated (tri- to tetra-) PBDEs in most sections of the sediment profiles was observed, suggesting that the light molecular weight PCBs and PBDEs have most likely reached lake sediments by long-range atmospheric transport from distant sources. Despite the restrictions on their applications, the sediment records for the concentrations and fluxes showed no corresponding decreasing trend with restrictions for PCBs, which suggested that these POPs (e.g., PCBs) were still emitted to the environment owing to the influence of primary or secondary emissions. To our knowledge, this is the first report on input history of atmospheric PCBs and PBDEs recorded in TP Lake sediment.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers in the environment and human external and internal exposure in China: A review

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are widely used as brominated flame retardants. Because of their toxicity and persistence, some PBDEs were restricted under the Stockholm Convention in 2009. Since then, many studies have been carried out on PBDEs in China and in many other countries. In the present review, the occurrences and contamination of PBDEs in air, water, sediment, soil, biota and daily food, human blood, hair, and other human tissues in China are comprehensively reviewed and described. The human exposure pathways and associated health risks of PBDEs are summarized. The data showed no obvious differences between North and South China, but concentrations from West China were generally lower than in East China, which can be mainly attributed to the production and widespread use of PBDEs in eastern regions. High levels of PBDEs were generally observed in the PBDE production facilities (e.g., Jiangsu Province and Shandong Province, East China) and e-waste recycling sites (Taizhou City, Zhejiang Province, East China, and Guiyu City and Qingyuan City, both located in Guangdong Province, South China) and large cities, whereas low levels were detected in rural and less-developed areas, especially in remote regions such as the Tibetan Plateau. Deca-BDE is generally the major congener. Existing problems for PBDE investigations in China are revealed, and further studies are also discussed and anticipated. In particular, non-invasive matrices such as hair should be more thoroughly studied; more accurate estimations of human exposure and health risks should be performed, such as adding bioaccessibility or bioavailability to human exposure assessments; and the degradation products and metabolites of PBDEs in human bodies should receive more attention. More investigations should be carried out to evaluate the quantitative relationships between internal and external exposure so as to provide a scientific basis for ensuring human health.

The sedimentary record of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Yamzho Yumco Lake: evolution of local sources and adsorption dynamic in the Tibetan Plateau

With the rapid increase in anthropogenic activities, the local emissions of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in background regions, such as the Tibetan Plateau (TP), have attracted great attention. The deposition of PAHs in lake sediments provides a historical evolutionary record of such compounds in these regions. To investigate the evolution of PAHs in the TP, two sedimentary cores from Yamzho Yumco Lake were collected and dated at high resolution, and the concentrations of 16 PAHs and sediment properties were also analyzed. The total concentrations of the 16 PAHs ranged from 6.52 to 57.97 ng/g (dry weight) in YC1 and from 0.91 to 4.57 ng/g (dry weight) in YC2. According to the methods of principal component analysis (PCA) followed by multilinear regression analysis (MLRA), four sources of PAHs in the sediments were qualitatively and quantitatively identified, such as petroleum combustion, petrogenic, coal combustion, and biomass burning. Thus, the historical evolution of PAHs was summarized. In addition, the transported distance from local PAH emission sources was found to greatly affect the composition and concentration of PAHs in sites YC1 and YC2. Specifically, local sources contributed a greater proportion of heavy molecular weight (HMW) PAHs in YC1 and a higher proportion of light-molecular-weight (LMW) PAHs in YC2. Moreover, fine particles (size < 20 μm) were found to play a significant role in adsorbing PAHs in sediments. Furthermore, ∑₁₆PAHs in sediments were linearly correlated with the percentage of fine particles (size < 20 μm). This study provides a first example to investigate the historical evolution of PAH local emission in background regions by using lake sedimentary records, especially in the TP. Specifically, different local sources were identified using the methods of PCA followed by MLRA, and PAHs in TP sediments were predominantly adsorbed by fine particles rather than by total organic carbon (TOC) because the amount of TOC was limited.

Insight into the local source of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in the developing Tibetan Plateau: The composition and transport around the Lhasa landfill

In the background region of the Tibetan Plateau (TP), the rapid urbanization probably results in the massive generation of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), which lacks monitoring and evaluation. Since landfill could serve as an important sink of the locally used POPs, the analysis of POPs in the Tibetan landfill area might help us to understand the source composition and their transport in the TP. In this study, the concentration variations of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in five soil profiles and seven surficial sediments around the largest Tibetan landfill were investigated. The total concentrations of PBDEs ranged from 128 to 1219 ng/kg in soils, and from 447 to 7295 ng/kg in sediments. The dominance of nona- and deca-BDEs possibly indicated the wide usage of deca-BDE as flame retardant in the TP. The vertical and spatial distribution patterns of PBDEs within soils plausibly revealed their main transport pathways by atmospheric dispersion and leachate seepage from landfill. Based on principal components analysis and multiple linear regression, these two pathways were estimated to account for 61% and 39% of the total concentrations, respectively. Additionally, the spatial and vertical distributions of octa-to deca-BDEs within soils were significantly influenced by soil particle size. Although the PBDEs inventory in the study area was comparatively low, the rapid urbanization in the TP might dramatically accelerate the PBDE emissions in the future. This study firstly introduced the presence of local PBDEs in the TP, and the inventory already influenced the surrounding environment. Once involved in the regional cycle of the TP, the local source of PBDEs from waste might significantly serve to raise background level resulting otherwise primarily from long-range atmospheric transport.

Organochlorine pesticides in the sedimentary core of the southern Tibetan Plateau: The missing pieces induced by lateral remobilization

The sedimentary core in remote alpine lakes has been recognized as an ideal proxy to reconstruct the emission and air deposition histories of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Nevertheless, POPs formerly stored in a catchment might also contribute to the variation in the lake sediment by lateral remobilization. In this study, to reveal the relative importance of lateral remobilization, we measured the vertical profiles and isomeric ratios of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs), hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) and endosulfan in a dated sedimentary core collected from Lake Yamzho Yumco in the southern Tibetan Plateau. In addition to the flux peaks in the 1970s corresponding to the heavy atmospheric deposition of DDTs and HCHs, these pollutants' fluxes displayed rebounds in the flood periods, with characteristic low ratios of DDT/DDE (α-/β-HCH). This might indicate a massive remobilization of "weathered" pesticides from catchment soil to the lake because of strong hydro-dynamics. Moreover, the relative contribution of lateral remobilization to the lake sediment in the past decades was recognized through the correlation between DDT/DDE (α-/β-HCH) ratios and ∑DDT (∑HCH) fluxes. The results showed that the lateral remobilization contributed to 20-42% of the total fluxes. This study discriminated the air deposition from the contribution of lateral remobilization, which improves current understanding of the vertical POPs profiles in the sedimentary core.

A review of current knowledge and future prospects regarding persistent organic pollutants over the Tibetan Plateau

Since the turn of the century, our understanding of the quantities, transport pathways, and fate of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) over the Tibetan Plateau (TP), the largest and highest plateau on Earth, has greatly enhanced. We begin in this article by reviewing the available literature on the levels of POPs over the TP. In general, the levels of most POPs are similar or lower than values reported for other background regions. However, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) levels in air and soil far exceed those measured in other mountainous areas. The East Asian monsoon, Indian Monsoon and westerly winds are responsible for the long-range atmospheric transport (LRAT) and arrival of POPs over the TP. Surface soil and vegetation act as "final sinks" for DDTs and other high molecular weight POPs. Linked to the continuous use of POPs in surrounding counties, LRAT and "cold trapping" by the TP can happen following emission-transport-deposition events, leading to the enrichment of POPs in the TP environment. Bioaccumulation of DDTs and high chlorinated PCBs have been found in Tibetan terrestrial and aquatic food chains, and newly emerging compounds such as polyfluoroalkyl substances and hexabromocyclododecanes have been widely detected in wild fish species. The corresponding ecological risks should be of great concern. Climate change, such as increased temperatures and changing coverage of snow and glaciers, has the potential to affect the behavior and distribution of POPs. Therefore, long-term monitoring data are required. Ineffective regulation regarding POPs has been reported for countries in South Asia, emissions patterns, the outflow of POPs, and their seasonal and inter-annual variability should therefore be clarified. Estimating the loading of POPs, as well as how they move, within the TP, especially under the impact of glacial melt and global warming, should be a priority.

An overview on the organic pollution around the Qinghai-Tibet plateau: The thought-provoking situation

The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau plays an important role in the ecological safety and human health of the surroundings due to its unique geographical position and function. Therefore, it is necessary to study the pollution status and potential risk in this area. This study summarizes the distribution of different organic pollutants in biota and environmental media of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Moreover, it also pays attention to the potential health risks of these organic pollutants. Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were the most frequently detected in different matrices. In general, the carcinogenic risks of organic pollutants were ranked in the very-low to moderate range for both children and adults. The carcinogenic risks of organic pollutants in fish, food, and water for children were 1-2 times higher than those for adults, while risks of organic pollutants in soil/sediment and in air for children were generally 10.6-16.5 and 2.6-2.8 times higher than those for adults, respectively. The maximal hazard quotient for non-carcinogenic risk was 0.95 (potential risk for children posed by organic pollutants in yak milk of Ruoergai), almost reaching an unacceptable level. Therefore, the potential health risks could not be neglected, especially for children who were more likely to be affected by the pollutants.

Microbial bioavailability of 2,2',4,4'-Tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) in natural sediments from major rivers of China

Microbial degradation plays a crucial role in eliminating polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in environments. However, the microbial bioavailability of PBDEs in aquatic sediments is not well understood. In this work, the bioavailability of 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47), a typical PBDE congener, to PBDE-degrading microorganisms in natural sediments from six Chinese rivers under anaerobic conditions was investigated. The contents of black carbon (BC) and total organic carbon (TOC) in the six sediment samples were in the range of 0.025%-0.30% and 0.03%-3.38%, respectively. BDE-47 desorption from various sediments was fitted well with the first-order three-compartment desorption model. The desorbing fraction of sediment-associated BDE-47 at each desorption time interval exhibited a significant negative correlation with the BC content (p < 0.01). In the sediments, the anaerobic debromination of BDE-47 by microorganisms underwent a stepwise debromination pathway generating mainly three lower brominated congeners (BDE-28, -17 and -4). The microbial debromination ratio of BDE-47 ranged from 4.21% to 7.89% in various sediments after 120 d incubation anaerobically, and it negatively correlated with the content of sediment BC significantly (p < 0.01). However, the desorbing fraction and microbial debromination ratio of BDE-47 only showed weak correlations with the TOC content in sediments (p > 0.05). Furthermore, there was a significant positive correlation of desorbing fraction of BDE-47 from sediments with its microbial debromination ratio (p < 0.01) as well as with the level of its three lower brominated products (p < 0.05) after the first 20 d incubation. This study suggests that the BDE-47 bioavailability to microorganisms in anaerobic river sediments is mainly influenced by the content of sediment BC which controls the desorbing fraction of sediment-associated BDE-47.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in soils of the central Tibetan Plateau, China: Distribution, sources, transport and contribution in global cycling

Forty-four soil samples were collected across the central Tibetan Plateau (CTP) at altitudes between 3711 m and 5352 m, and their polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contents were measured to be from 0.43 to 26.66 ng/g. The main sources of PAHs were identified for each of four sub-areas, and their concentrations in soils were determined to be mainly influenced by local sources. Along a 600 km sampling trajectory from Lhasa, which served as the biggest local source, the concentrations of PAHs decreased logarithmically with increasing distances from the source. Meanwhile, the fractional proportions of PAHs were observed to change logarithmically according to the transport distances. Conclusively, PAHs from local sources were transported within the CTP and dominated PAHs concentrations in the soils, but few of them were transported outside the CTP. In global cycling, the soils in the CTP mainly serve as background and a "sink" for PAHs.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers in surface soils near the Changwengluozha Glacier of Central Tibetan Plateau, China

Forty-two congeners of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were detected for each of 27 surface-soil samples collected at an area near the Changwengluozha Glacier in the Central Tibetan Plateau (CTP), a remote background area at altitude from 5080 to 5217 m. The total concentrations of BDEs in soils ranged from 15.3 to 248.0 ng/kg, which were found to be positively correlated with the clay contents in the soil. In addition to adsorption, the clay was found to serve as a catalyst for the debromination of PBDEs in soils. Three pieces of evidence confirmed that the clay was significantly correlated with the debrominating transformation from the higher brominated congeners to the less brominated congeners. The transforming rate was found to be increased 3.5% with a 10% increase in clays. Debromination is an important way for highly brominated congeners to transform into lighter brominated congeners that are more toxic. This study first provided the direct field evidences for clays contributing to the debromination of PBDEs, and elucidated the importance of it in PBDEs' environmental fate.

Spatial distribution of old and emerging flame retardants in Chinese forest soils: sources, trends and processes

The levels and distribution of polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDEs), novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) and Dechlorane Plus (DP) in soils and their dependence on environmental and anthropological factors were investigated in 159 soil samples from 30 background forested mountain sites across China. Decabromodiphenylethane (DBDPE) was the most abundant flame retardant (25-18,000 pg g(-1) and 5-13,000 pg g(-1) in O-horizon and A-horizon, respectively), followed by BDE 209 (nd-5900 pg g(-1) and nd-2400 pg g(-1) in O-horizon and A-horizon, respectively). FRs distributions were primarily controlled by source distribution. The distributions of most phasing-out PBDEs, DP isomers and TBPH were in fact correlated to a population density-based index used as proxy of areas with elevated usage and waste of FR containing products. High concentrations of some NBFRs were however observed in industrialized regions and FR manufacturing plants. Strongly positive correlations were observed between PBDEs and their replacement products suggesting similar emission pattern and environmental behavior. Exposure of mineral subsoils depended on precipitations driving leaching of FRs into the soil core. This was especially evident for some emerging BFRs (TBE, TBPH, and TBB etc.) possibly indicating potential for diffuse groundwater contamination.

Polychlorinated biphenyls in surface soils of the Central Tibetan Plateau: altitudinal and chiral signatures

The soils in the Central Tibetan Plateau (CTP), which is a unique background region, play an important role in the fate of the global cycling of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Forty-four soil samples from across the CTP were collected at altitudes between 3711 m and 5352 m, and the concentrations of 122 PCB congeners were measured from 66.98 to 150.81 ng/kg. The concentration of PCBs was positively correlated with the sampling altitude and clay content. Furthermore, enantiomeric fractions (EFs) of CB-95, CB-136 and CB-149 in soils of CTP were first determined. A (+)-enantiomer excess was identified for CB-136 and CB-149 in all of the samples investigated. Additionally, enantiomer-specific excess was found for CB-95. The dominance of enantiomer-specific excess decreased with increased the sampling altitude and congener concentration. It is likely that the addition of enantiomeric mixtures of PCBs from the atmosphere changed the EFs in the soils according to the altitude.

Chiral signature of α-HCH and o,p'-DDT in the soil and grass of the Central Tibetan Plateau, China

Enantiomeric fraction (EF) of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) has been used as a signature for tracing the source and following pathways. The chiral analysis was performed for α-HCH and o,p'-DDT in paired soil and grass samples from the Central Tibetan Plateau (CTP), a unique background region. In the case of α-HCH, excess of (-) α-HCH was predominant in 83.3% of soil samples, and 80% of grass samples showed excess of (+) enantiomer. For o,p'-DDT, 90.9% of grass samples showed excess of (-) o,p'-DDT while 50% of soil samples showed excess of the (-) enantiomer. A correlation between EFs of soil and grass was not observed for either compound. The EFs of both compounds were correlated with soil concentration and with change of sampling altitude, within EFs being lower than racemic. However, these trends were not found in grass. Our study provides a database of EFs and signatures for OCPs in the CTP, one background region of the world.

Factors influencing the accumulation of organochlorine pesticides in the surface soil across the Central Tibetan Plateau, China

Forty-four soil samples were collected across the Central Tibetan Plateau (CTP) at elevations of between 3711 and 5352 m. The scatter diagram shows that the soil concentrations of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were associated with the altitude of sampling site, soil clay minerals, soil organic carbon (SOC) and the fine particle fractions of soil. Pearson correction analysis and principle component analysis were used to deduce the relationship between the OCP concentrations and these factors logically. It was determined that the altitude and clays functioned as the primary factors influencing OCP accumulation, and SOC was weakly related to OCPs. The fitting equation closely matches the observations in the field while only taking the altitude and clay minerals into account. Our study found that clay minerals dominated the sorption of OCPs in soil, whereas the altitude contributed to temperature-driven condensation for the accumulation of OCPs at high altitudinal CTP.

Persistent organic pollutants in soil near the Changwengluozha glacier of the Central Tibetan Plateau, China: their sorption to clays and implication

Twenty-seven soil samples were collected at ca. 5,000 m from the Changwengluozha glacier. In addition to soil components, the concentration of 23 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analyzed. Clay minerals were found to play a key role in the accumulation of OCPs/PAHs in soil. The sorption ratio of chemical to clay was ordered in the OCPs and PAHs to the vapor pressure in a negatively correlated fashion. Because of the negative relationship between vapor pressure and the soil-air partition coefficients (KSA), it was understood that the higher sorption ratio responded to a higher KSA, which indicated the fate of the contaminants in soil. The soil near the Changwengluozha glacier functioned as a "sink" for OCPs in the decreasing order of 2,4'-DDT, 4,4'-DDD, HCB, δ-HCH, and α-HCH and for PAHs in an decreasing order of Pyr, Flu, Fl, Ace, and Acy.
