Microplastics as vectors of radioiodine in the marine environment: A study on sorption and interaction mechanism

Colonization characteristics and surface effects of microplastic biofilms: Implications for environmental behavior of typical pollutants

This paper summarizes the colonization dynamics of biofilms on microplastics (MPs) surfaces in aquatic environments, encompassing bacterial characteristics, environmental factors affecting biofilm formation, and matrix types and characteristics. The interaction between biofilm and MPs was also discussed. Through summarizing recent literatures, it was found that MPs surfaces offer numerous benefits to microorganisms, including nutrient enrichment and enhanced resistance to environmental stress. Biofilm colonization changes the surface physical and chemical properties as well as the transport behavior of MPs. At the same time, biofilms also play an important role in the fragmentation and degradation of MPs. In addition, we also investigated the coexistence level, adsorption mechanism, enrichment, and transformation of MPs by environmental pollutants mediated by biofilms. Moreover, an interesting aspect about the colonization of biofilms was discussed. Biofilm colonization not only had a great effect on the accumulation of heavy metals by MPs, but also affects the interaction between particles and environmental pollutants, thereby changing their toxic effects and increasing the difficulty of MPs treatment. Consequently, further attention and research are warranted to delve into the internal mechanisms, environmental risks, and the control of the coexistence of MPs and biofilms.

The resistance change and stress response mechanisms of chlorine-resistant bacteria under microplastic stress in drinking water distribution system

The presence of both chlorine-resistant bacteria (CRB) and microplastics (MPs) in drinking water distribution systems (DWDS) poses a threat to water quality and human health. However, the risk of CRB bio evolution under the stress of MPs remains unclear. In this study, polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) were selected to study the adsorption and desorption behavior of sulfamethoxazole (SMX), and it was clear that MPs had the risk of carrying pollutants into DWDS and releasing them. The results of the antibiotic susceptibility test and disinfection experiment confirmed that MPs could enhance the resistance of CRB to antibiotics and disinfectants. Bacteria epigenetic resistance mechanisms were approached from multiple perspectives, including physiological and biochemical characteristics, as well as molecular regulatory networks. When MPs enter DWDS, CRB could attach to the surface of MPs and directly interact with both MPs and the antibiotics they release. This attachment process promoted changes in the composition and content of extracellular polymers (EPS) within cells, enhanced surface hydrophobicity, stimulated oxidative stress function, and notably elevated the relative abundance of certain antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). This study elucidates the mechanism by which MPs alter the intrinsic properties of CRB, providing valuable insights into the effective avoidance of biological risks to water quality during CRB evolution.

Microplastics in water: Occurrence, fate and removal

A global study on tap water samples has found that up to 83% of these contained microplastic fibres. These findings raise concerns about their potential health risks. Ingested microplastic particles have already been associated with harmful effects in animals, which raise concerns about similar outcomes in humans. Microplastics are ubiquitous in the environment, commonly found disposed in landfills and waste sites. Within indoor environments, the common sources are synthetic textiles, plastic bottles, and packaging. From the various point sources, they are globally distributed through air and water and can enter humans through various pathways. The finding of microplastics in fresh snow in the Antarctic highlights just how widely they are dispersed. The behaviour and health risks from microplastic particles are strongly influenced by their physicochemical properties, which is why their surfaces are important. Surface interactions are also important in pollutant transport via adsorption onto the microplastic particles. Our review covers the latest findings in microplastics research including the latest statistics in their abundance, their occurrence and fate in the environment, the methods of reducing microplastics exposure and their removal. We conclude by proposing future research directions into more effective remediation methods including new technologies and sustainable green remediation methods that need to be explored to achieve success in microplastics removal from waters at large scale.

Development of a polystyrene-based microplastic model for bioaccumulation and biodistribution study using radiotracing and nuclear analysis method

The investigation of micro or nano plastics behavior in the environment is essential to minimize the hazards of such pollutants on humans. While the conventional method requires sophisticated procedures and a lot of animal subjects, the nuclear technique confers a sensitive, accurate, and real-time method using radiolabeled micro or nano plastics as a tracer. In this study, polystyrene sulfonate-based microplastic (PSM) was developed with a size of around 3.6 μm, followed by radiolabeling with iodine-131 (131I) or zinc-65 (65Zn) for microplastic radiotracer model. After a stability study in seawater, phosphate buffer saline (PBS), and human serum albumin (HSA) for fifteen days, PSM-131I remained stable (>90 %), except in HSA (50-60 % after day-9), while PSM-65Zn was unstable (<50 %).

Effects of polyethylene terephthalate microplastics on cell growth, intracellular products and oxidative stress of Scenedesmus sp

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) has been widely utilized in the synthesis of textile materials and packaging of foods and beverages. In recent years, it has been commonly detected in the form of microplastics (MPs) in wastewater. However, the effects of PET MPs on microalgal intracellular products and their interrelationships have been poorly investigated. In this study, the microalgae Scenedesmus sp. Strain H-1 was exposed to PET MPs to explore their effects on the growth, intracellular products (such as lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins), and antioxidative defense systems of Scenedesmus sp. The results demonstrated that PET MPs significantly reduced Scenedesmus sp. cell growth, with a maximum inhibition rate of 38.25% in the 500 mg L-1 treatment group. PET MPs had negative effects on glucose and nitrate utilization rates and reduced intracellular carbohydrates, intracellular proteins, and photosynthetic pigments. Surprisingly, PET MPs reduced acetyl-CoA carboxylase activity but induced lipid accumulation in microalgae. In addition, PET MPs significantly decreased the essential linoleic acid concentration and increased the palmitic acid content, resulting in reduced biodiesel quality. PET MPs induced the production of reactive oxygen species and malondialdehyde as well as the activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase. The results of the PCA indicated that the response mechanism of Scenedesmus sp. to PET MPs exposure was synergistic. This study provides fundamental data on the impact of MPs on the intracellular products of microalgae.

Occurrence of microplastics in Antarctic fishes: Abundance, size, shape, and polymer composition

Presence of microplastics (MPs) in Antarctic ecosystems has attracted global attention, due to the potential threat to the Antarctic marine organisms. However, data on the occurrence of MPs in Antarctic fishes remains very limited. This study investigated the abundance and characteristics of MPs in four species of Antarctic fish (n = 114). The highest mean abundance of MPs was detected in Trematomus eulepidotus (1.7 ± 0.61 items/individual), followed by that in Chionodraco rastrospinosus (1.4 ± 0.26 items/individual), Notolepis coatsi (1.1 ± 0.57 items/individual), and Electrona carlsbergi (0.72 ± 0.19 items/individual). MPs in Notolepis coatsi (mean 747 μm) had the highest mean size, followed by that in Trematomus eulepidotus (653 μm), Chionodraco rastrospinosus (629 μm), and Electrona carlsbergi (473 μm). This is possibly attributed to the feeding habits and egestion behaviors of different Antarctic fishes. Fiber was consistently the predominant shape of MPs in Trematomus eulepidotus, Chionodraco rastrospinosus, and Electrona carlsbergi, accounting for 82 %, 76 %, and 60 % of total items of MPs, respectively. Polypropylene, polyamide, and polyethylene were the predominant polymer composition of MPs in Antarctic fishes, collectively contributed 63-86 % of total items of MPs. This may be because these types of MPs have been widely used in global household materials. To our knowledge, this is the most comprehensive study examining the occurrence of MPs in Antarctic fishes. This study provides fundamental data for evaluating the risks of MP exposure for Antarctic fishes.

Microplastics are overestimated due to poor quality control of reagents

Microplastics are widely distributed in the environment and pose potential ecological risks, increasing to be one of the most important environmental pollutants. However, when assessing the characteristics of microplastic contamination in environmental samples, inadequate quality control measures for the working solutions may introduce additional microplastic contamination and lead to an overestimation of microplastic abundance in the samples. In this study, we evaluated the microplastic contamination characteristics in commonly used flotation and digestion reagents to assess errors caused by microplastics in the reagents. The results showed that the abundance of microplastics in the reagents ranged from 0.8 to 43.4 items/g, with the abundance of microplastics in flotation reagents being lower than that in digestion reagents. The shapes of the detected microplastics included particles, fibers, and fragments, and their size and outline were generally small, with most being below 100 µm. The most common types of polymers detected were polyethylene and polypropylene. In order to improve the universality and readability of the results, the detected microplastic abundances were converted into the actual application concentration of the working fluid. It was found that the potential contamination of microplastics in untreated flotation solutions ranged from 1.5 to 30.8 items/mL, while in digestion solutions ranged from 0.1 to 2.3 items/mL. Our study emphasizes the need for quality control measures, such as suction filtration, when evaluating microplastics in environmental samples or conducting chemical and biological tests related to microplastics.

Recent advances on micro/nanoplastic pollution and membrane fouling during water treatment: A review

Effluent from sewage treatment plant, as an important source of microplastics (MPs) in receiving water, has attracted extensive attention. Membrane separation process shows good microplastic removal performance in the existing tertiary water treatment process. Problematically, membrane fouling and insufficient removal of small organic molecules are still the key obstacles to its further extensive application. Dissolved organics, extracellular polymers and suspended particles in the influent are deposited on the membrane surface and internal structure, reducing the number and pore diameter of effective membrane aperture, and increasing the resistance of membrane filtration. Exploring the mechanism and approach of membrane fouling caused by micro/nanoplastics is the key to alleviate fouling and allow membranes to operate longer. In this paper, removal performance of micro/nanoplastics by current membrane filtration and the contribution to membrane fouling during water treatment are thoroughly reviewed. The coupling mechanisms between micro/nanoplastics and other pollutants and mechanism of membrane fouling caused by composite micro/nanoplastics are discussed. Additionally, on this basis, the prospect of combined process for micro/nanoplastic removal and membrane fouling prevention is also proposed and discussed, which provides a valuable reference for the preferential removal of micro/nanoplastics and development of antifouling membrane.

Iodine-131 radiolabeled polyvinylchloride: A potential radiotracer for micro and nanoplastics bioaccumulation and biodistribution study in organisms

The microplastics amount in the environment is significantly increasing due to human activity, and the hazards are still being investigated. To evaluate the fate of microplastics in organisms, an accurate, fast, and sensitive method is required. Nuclear technology harnessing radiotracer is one of the most sensitive and accurate method for bioaccumulation, biodistribution and biokinetic study. Here, we developed a preparation method for radioiodinated polyvinyl chloride (PVC) as a potential radiotracer of microplastics. Iodine-131 (¹³¹I) as a potential radiotracer for microplastic was used in this experiment (activity of 98.05-221.63 MBq). The ¹³¹I-PVC was prepared using the Conant-Finkelstein reaction with a solvent combination of phosphate buffer (B), acetone (A), and tetrahydrofuran (T). Such preparation method resulted in spherical ¹³¹I-PVC with sizes ranging from 608.6 to 5457.0 nm. Our study showed that acetone is the most suitable solvent for the radioiodination process, resulting in a stable ¹³¹I-PVC for up to six days.

Highly effective sustainable membrane based cyanobacteria for uranium uptake from aqueous environment

Wastewater from industrial process of uranium ore mining contains a large amount of this radioactive pollutant. Regarding the advantages of biosorption, it was found that varieties of biomasses such as agricultural waste, algae and fungi are effective for uranium removal. However, there is limited research on cyanobacteria, therefore, cyanobacteria, Anagnostidinema amphibium (CAA) was investigated by batch method for the first time for biosorption of uranium (VI). Optimization of biosorption parameters showed that maximum removal efficiency of 92.91% was reached at pH range of 9-11 with 50 mg of cyanobacteria to 100 mg/L U(VI) initial concentration, at 25 °C within 40 min. Used biosorbent exhibited very good selectivity for U(VI) ions and reusability in IV sorption/desorption cycles. Characterization of CAA surface was performed by FTIR, EDS, EDXRF and SEM analysis and it has shown various functional groups (CONH, COOH, OH, PO alkyl group) and that it is very rich in elements such as iron, potassium and calcium. In binary systems, contained of U(VI) and selected ions, CAA exhibits very good selectivity towards U(VI) ions. Kinetic data revealed the best accordance of experimental data with the pseudo-second-order model and isotherms data agreed with Freundlich model. Thermodynamic data implied that U(VI) biosorption process by A. amphibium exhibited spontaneity and modelling of the investigated process showed that the adsorption of uranium ions occurs mainly via peptidoglycan carboxyl groups. Overall results show that these cyanobacteria with a maximum sorption capacity of 324.94 mg/g have great potential for the processing of wastewater polluted with uranium (VI).
