Fate and ecological risks of current-use pesticides in seawater and sediment of the Yellow Sea and East China Sea

Endocrine toxicity of atrazine and its underlying mechanisms

Atrazine (ATR) is one of the most widely utilized herbicides globally and is prevalent in the environment due to its extensive use and long half-life. It can infiltrate the human body through drinking water, ingestion, and dermal contact, and has been recognized as an environmental endocrine disruptor. This study aims to comprehensively outline the detrimental impacts of ATR on the endocrine system. Previous research indicates that ATR is harmful to various bodily systems, including the reproductive system, nervous system, adrenal glands, and thyroi d gland. The toxic effects of ATR on the endocrine system and its underlying molecular mechanisms are summarized as follows: influencing the expression of kisspeptin in the HPG axis, consequently affecting steroid synthesis; disrupting DNA synthesis and meiosis, as well as modifying DNA methylation levels, leading to reproductive and developmental toxicity; impacting dopamine by altering Nurr1, VMAT2, and DAT expression, consequently affecting dopamine synthesis and transporter expression, and influencing other neurotransmitters, resulting in neurotoxicity; and changing adipose tissue synthesis and metabolism by reducing basal metabolism, impairing cellular oxidative phosphorylation, and inducing insulin resistance. Additionally, a compilation of natural products used to mitigate the toxic effects of ATR has been provided, encompassing melatonin, curcumin, quercetin, lycopene, flavonoids, vitamin C, vitamin E, and other natural remedies. It is important to note that existing research predominantly relies on in vitro and ex vivo experiments, with limited population-based empirical evidence available.

Biodegradation and antimicrobial capability-induced heavy metal resistance of the marine-derived actinomycetes Nocardia harenae JJB5 and Amycolatopsis marina JJB11

Currently, heavy metal-resistant (HMR) marine actinomycetes have attracted much attention worldwide due to their unique capabilities. In this study, 27 marine-derived actinomycetes were isolated from coastal beaches in the Arabian Gulf of Al-Jubail in Saudi Arabia and screened for resistance to 100 mg/L of the heavy metals Cd2+, Cr6+, Cu2+, Fe2+, Pb2+, and Ni2+ using different assay techniques. Six isolates were selected as HMRs, of which two isolates, JJB5 and JJB11, exhibited the highest maximum tolerance concentrations (200- > 300 mg/L). Both isolates were the highest among six-HMR screened for their biodegradation potential of plastics low-density polyethylene, polystyrene, and polyvinyl chloride, recording the highest weight loss (15 ± 1.22 - 65 ± 1.2%) in their thin films. They also showed the highest biodegradability of the pesticides acetamiprid, chlordane, hexachlorocyclohexane, indoxacarb and lindane, indicating promising removal capacities (95.70-100%) for acetamiprid and indoxacarb using HPLC analysis. Additionally, the cell-free filtrate (CFF) of both isolates displayed the highest antimicrobial activity among the six-HMR screened against a variety of microbial test strains, recording the highest inhibition zone diameters (13.76 ± 0.66 - 26.0 ± 1.13 mm). GC‒MS analyses of the ethyl acetate extract of their CFFs revealed the presence of diverse chemical compounds with a multitude of remarkable biological activities. Based on their spore morphology and wall-chemotype, they were assigned to the nocardioform-actinomycetes. Furthermore, their phenotypic characteristics, together with 16S rRNA gene sequencing (OR121525-OR121526), revealed them as Nocardia harenae JJB5 and Amycolatopsis marina JJB11. Our results suggest that marine HMR actinomycetes are promising candidates for various biotechnological applications.

A critical review of sustainable pesticide remediation in contaminated sites: Research challenges and mechanistic insights

Incidental pesticide application on farmlands can result in contamination of off-target biota, soil, groundwater, and surrounding ecosystems. To manage these pesticide contaminations sustainably, it is important to utilize advanced approaches to pesticide decontamination. This review assesses various innovative strategies applied for remediating pesticide-contaminated sites, including physical, chemical, biological, and nanoremediation. Integrated remediation approaches appear to be more effective than singular technologies. Bioremediation and chemical remediation are considered suitable and sustainable strategies for decontaminating contaminated soils. Furthermore, this study highlights key mechanisms underlying advanced pesticide remediation that have not been systematically studied. The transformation of applied pesticides into metabolites through various biotic and chemical triggering factors is well documented. Ex-situ and in-situ technologies are the two main categories employed for pesticide remediation. However, when selecting a remediation technique, it is important to consider factors such as application sites, cost-effectiveness, and specific purpose. In this review, the sustainability of existing pesticide remediation strategies is thoroughly analyzed as a pioneering effort. Additionally, the study summarizes research uncertainties and technical challenges associated with different remediation approaches. Lastly, specific recommendations and policy advocacy are suggested to enhance contemporary remediation approaches for cleaning up pesticide-contaminated sites.

Simultaneous determination of carbendazim and carbaryl pesticides in water bodies samples using a new voltammetric sensor based on Moringa oleifera biochar

For the first time, a modified electrochemical sensor based on carbon paste was developed using biochar derived from the husks of Moringa oleifera pods to detect successfully and simultaneously carbendazim (CBZ) and carbaryl (CBR) pesticides. Biochar was obtained via pyrolysis at 400 °C, which required no additional activation or modification processes. The incorporation of the biochar modifier enabled the preconcentration of both pesticides under open potential circuit conditions, resulting in a significant enhancement in sensitivity compared to bare electrode. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the developed sensor exhibited excellent sensitivity to the target analytes, showing a linear relationship within the concentration range of 0.29-6.00 μM for CBZ and 29.9-502 μM for CBR. The limits of detection were calculated to be 0.12 μM for CBZ and 10.4 μM for CBR. The proposed method demonstrated remarkable selectivity for analytes even in the presence of diverse organic and inorganic species. Furthermore, the method was successfully applied to the determination of CBZ and CBR pesticides in various water matrices, including river, sea, drinking, and groundwater samples, without the need for any sample pretreatment, such as extraction or filtration. The observed recoveries ranged from 87% to 111%, indicating the efficiency and reliability of this method.

How did a tailings spill change the distribution of legacy organochlorine compounds in a Southeast Atlantic inner shelf area: Is a hidden danger being transferred to the ocean?

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane (DDT) were evaluated in water and sediments from the Espírito Santo Inner Shelf (ESIS), Brazil, three years after the Fundão dam failure (FDF). We discuss the levels, sources, fate, and current environmental risks of these contaminants on temporal and spatial scales. In addition, the associated coastal dispersion patterns, water-sediment exchange trends, and environmental alterations were also discussed. Low contributions and no environmental risks were verified for PCBs after FDF. However, the low concentrations and frequency of occurrence in the samples did not allow for further reliable conclusions regarding the source of this contaminant. In contrast, hazard risk has been detected for DDTs in water and sediments. In sediments, there were a significant increase in level (up to 13.42 ng g-1; outlier = 369.6 ng g-1), inventory (maximum = 35.98 ng cm-2) and mean total mass (21.1 ± 39.4 kg) of DDTs after FDF. The integrated assessment of the spatial distribution in water and sediment suggests that DDTs was released from the Doce River, travelled south by the water column, and returned to the mouth region by northward sediment transport, where it accumulated. However, intense rainfall increased the input of DDTs to the ESIS and may have also altered its spatial distribution. Fugacity fraction analysis (ƒƒ) indicated a net flux of DDTs from water to sediment, suggesting that vertical sinking was an important transport process in this area. Finally, the findings indicate that FDF contributed to DDTs input on ESIS by remobilizing contaminated past sediments and soils from the Doce River drainage basin. This contribution is expected to continue since a large amount of tailings is still stored in the river basin and estuary. These results highlight the importance of assessing the indirect impacts of large-scale land disasters on marine environments, and may be helpful in future interpretations of additional local trends and global inventories of legacy pollutants.

Contamination of neonicotinoid insecticides in source water and their fate during drinking water treatment in the Dongguan section of the Pearl River

Neonicotinoid insecticides (NEOs) as well as their metabolites are highly mobile on the subsurface and can potentially contaminate drinking water sources; however, their pollution status and fate in the drinking water system remains ambiguous. In this study, six parent NEOs and two characteristic metabolites were measured in drinking water source protection area (source water, n = 52) and two related drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) (n = 88) located in the Dongguan section of the Pearl River. The ubiquitous of NEOs was observed in source water with the mean concentration of total NEOs (ΣNEOs) at 240 ng/L. Although advanced DWTP (A-DWTP; range: 26 % to 100 %) showed better removals of ΣNEOs and all individual NEOs rather than those in conventional DWTP (C-DWTP; range: -53 % to 28 %), the removals were still low for acetamiprid (ACE, 26 %), thiacloprid (THD, 59 %), thiamethoxam (THM, 56 %) and N-desmethyl-acetamiprid (N-dm-ACE, 45 %) in A-DWTP. Removal rates were positive in chlorination (48 %), final stage of sedimentation (F-Sed, 24 %), and granular activated carbon (GAC) filter effluent (19 %) in A-DWTP. It worthy to note that ΣNEOs has high negative removal rates at the start stage of sedimentation (S-Sed, -83 %), middle stage of sedimentation (M-Sed, -47 %), and sand filter effluent (-42 %) water in C-DWTP, which resulted in negative removals of ΣNEOs (-9.6 %), imidacloprid (IMI, -22 %), clothianidin (CLO, -37 %), flupyradifurone (FLU, -76 %), and N-dm-ACE (-29 %) in C-DWTP. Residual levels of NEOs were high in source water, and their low or negative removals in DWTPs should be highly concerning. Results would fill the existing knowledge gap of NEOs in aquatic environment and provide a scientific dataset for policy-making on pollution control and environmental protection.

Waterborne Tebuconazole Exposure Induces Male-Biased Sex Differentiation in Zebrafish (Danio rerio) Larvae via Aromatase Inhibition

Tebuconazole is a widely used fungicide for various crops that targets sterol 14-α-demethylase (CYP51) in fungi. However, attention has shifted to aromatase (CYP19) due to limited research indicating its reproductive impact on aquatic organisms. Herein, zebrafish were exposed to 0.5 mg/L tebuconazole at different developmental stages. The proportion of males increased significantly after long-term exposure during the sex differentiation phase (0-60, 5-60, and 19-60 days postfertilization (dpf)). Testosterone levels increased and 17β-estradiol and cyp19a1a expression levels decreased during the 5-60 dpf exposure, while the sex ratio was equally distributed on coexposure with 50 ng/L 17β-estradiol. Chemically activated luciferase gene expression bioassays determined that the male-biased sex differentiation was not caused by tebuconazole directly binding to sex hormone receptors. Protein expression and phosphorylation levels were specifically altered in the vascular endothelial growth factor signaling pathway despite excluding the possibility of tebuconazole directly interacting with kinases. Aromatase was selected for potential target analysis. Molecular docking and aromatase activity assays demonstrated the interactions between tebuconazole and aromatase, highlighting that tebuconazole poses a threat to fish populations by inducing a gender imbalance.

Direct Spectrofluorimetric Method for the Analysis of Carbofuran and Fluometuron in Senegalese Natural Waters

In this work, analytical study of carbofuran (CAF) and fluometuron (FLM) pesticides was carried out using direct spectrofluorimetric method in various solvents. Results showed that CAF and FLM are naturally fluorescent in all solvents under study including organic (MeOH, MeCN, DMF) and aqueous micellar one (CTAC, SDS, Brij-700). For the analysis of FLM, CTAC give the best fluorescence signal enhancement. Analytical performances, such as limit of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) was evaluated after solvent optimization and were found to vary, respectively, between 0.1 and 11 ng mL- 1 and between 0.3 and 36.6 ng mL- 1. Analytical application in various environmental aqueous samples matrices (sea, tap, runoff and well waters) give satisfactory recovery rates in the limits of 73.7-113.7% for both pesticides. This method is described for its simplicity for routine analysis.

Spatiotemporal variations, surface inventory, and cross regional impact of current-use organoamine pesticides in Chinese Marginal Seas

Current-use Organoamine Pesticides (CUOAPs) are a growing concern as emerging pesticide pollutants that were initially discovered on a large scale in Chinese Marginal Seas (CMSs). The highest level was detected in the East China Sea in the late spring and decreased in the following order: East China Sea (early spring) > the South China Sea > the Bohai Sea. The crucial role played by the Yangtze and Yellow rivers as significant terrestrial sources were established. The fluctuations in the land application and riverine input led to variations in the source, distribution, and seasonal patterns of CUOAPs. Terrestrial-exported CUOAPs were transported and redistributed spatially by the surface ocean currents, resulting in significant regional disparities. The results displayed a pronounced terrestrial source signature and a cross-regional impact. By the ocean current transport, CMSs will likely become a secondary source region for the surrounding seas.

Tebuconazole mediates cognitive impairment via the microbe-gut-brain axis (MGBA) in mice

Tebuconazole, one of the most widely used triazole fungicides, is reported to potentially pose a risk of inducing neurological disorders in human beings. Considering the increasing exposure, whether it could influence cognitive function remains to be elucidated. Herein, we used a mouse model to evaluate the potential cognitive risks and possible mechanisms from the continuous edible application of tebuconazole at low concentrations. Our study revealed that tebuconazole deteriorated spatial learning and memory and downregulated the expression of glutamate receptor subunits. Importantly, metagenomic analysis indicated that tebuconazole not only led to significant shifts in the composition and diversity of the gut microbiota but also changed intestinal homeostasis. Specifically, after exposure, tebuconazole circulated in the bloodstream and largely entered the gut-brain axis for disruption, including disturbing the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio, interrelated neurotransmitters and systemic immune factors. Moreover, pretreatment with probiotics improved immune factor expression and restored the deterioration of synaptic function and spatial learning and memory. The current study provides novel insights concerning perturbations of the gut microbiome and its functions as a potential new mechanism by which tebuconazole exposes cognitive function-related human health.

Computer-aided toxicity prediction and potential risk assessment of two novel neonicotinoids, paichongding and cycloxaprid, to hydrobionts

Paichongding (IPP) and cycloxaprid (CYC) have been effectively used as the alternative products of imidacloprid (IMI) against IMI-resistant insects and exhibit a great market potential. However, risk assessment of IPP and CYC for non-target organisms, especially ecological risk assessment for non-target aquatic organisms, is still lacking. Here, we predicted the toxicity and potential risks of IPP, CYC, and their transformation products (TPs) to hydrobionts. The results indicated that IPP and CYC could generate 428 and 113 TPs, respectively, via aerobic microbial transformation. Nearly half of the IPP TPs and nearly 41 % of the CYC TPs exhibited high or moderate toxicity to Daphnia or fish. Moreover, we found that IPP, CYC, and 80 TPs of them posed potential risks to aquatic ecosystems. Almost all harmful TPs contained a 6-chloropyridine ring structure, suggesting that this structure may be associated with the strong toxicity of these TPs to aquatic organisms, and these TPs (IPP-TP2 or CYC-TP2, IPP-TP197 or CYC-TP71, IPP-TP198 or CYC-TP72, and IPP-TP212 or CYC-TP80) may appear in aquatic environments as final products. The risks posed by these TPs to aquatic ecosystems require more attention. This study provides insights into the toxicity and ecological risks of IPP and CYC.

Occurrence, vertical distribution and transport of organic amine pesticides in the seawater from the East China Sea and the South China Sea

Organic amine pesticides (OAPs) are widely used as insecticides, fungicides and herbicides in agricultural production. China is a large agricultural country, and the sprayed pesticides may impact the fragile marine environment through surface runoff. This study revealed the pollution characteristics of thirty-three OAPs in the East China Sea (ECS) and the South China Sea (SCS) and investigated their vertical variations in water columns. The ∑OAPs ranged from below method detection limits to 3.4 ng/ L, with an average value of 0.93 ng/ L. Diphenylamine and beflubutamid were the two most abundant compounds, contributing 64 % and 14 % of the ∑OAPs, respectively. The ∑OAPs in the ECS were significantly (M-W U test, p < 0.01) higher than that in the SCS, and OAPs exhibited different composition profiles. Diphenylamine was the most abundant compound in the ECS, while beflubutamid was dominant in the SCS, which may be related to industrial production (such as rubber synthesis) and agricultural activities. In the water columns, OAPs concentrations were higher in deep layers compared to that in surface seawater, which may be due to weak light and low temperature reducing the degradation of pesticides, indicating the deep ocean is a sink for OAPs. Under the dilution of seawater, the concentrations of OAPs decreased from the Pearl River Estuary to the open sea, and the South China Sea Warm Current also caused the decrease of OAPs from south to north. A preliminary risk assessment indicated that OAPs in the water pose no significant risk to aquatic organisms.

Revealing the driving synergistic degradation mechanism of Rhodococcus sp. B2 on the bioremediation of pretilachlor-contaminated soil

The pretilachlor has been widely used worldwide and has contaminated the environment for many years. The environmental fate of pretilachlor and its residues removal from the contaminated environment have attracted great concern. Reportedly, pretilachlor could partly be transformed to HECDEPA by Rhodococcus sp. B2. However, the effects of pretilachlor on soil bacterial communities and its complete metabolic pathway remain unknown. Herein, we investigated the mechanism of driving synergistic degradation of pretilachlor by strain B2 in the soil. The results revealed that pretilachlor showed a negative effect on bacterial communities and caused significant variations in the community structure. Strain B2 showed the ability to remediate the pretilachlor-contaminated soils and network analysis revealed that it may drive the enrichment of potential pretilachlor-degrading bacteria from the soil. The soil pretilachlor degradation may be facilitated by the members of the keystone families Comamonadaceae, Caulobacteraceae, Rhodospirillaceae, Chitinophagaceae, and Sphingomonadaceae. Meanwhile, Sphingomonas sp. M6, a member of the Sphingomonadaceae family, has been isolated from the strain B2 inoculation sample soil. The co-culture, comprising strain M6 and B2, could synergistic degrade pretilachlor within 30 h, which is the highest degradation rate. Strain M6 could completely degrade the HECDEPA via CDEPA and DEA. In the soil, a comparable pretilachlor degradation pathway may exist. This study suggested that strain B2 had the potential to drive the remediation of pretilachlor-contaminated soils.

Occurrence, spatiotemporal dynamics, and ecological risk of fungicides in a reservoir-regulated basin

As an indispensable type of pesticide, fungicides have been somewhat neglected compared to insecticides and herbicides. Heavy fungicide application in agricultural regions may generate downstream ecological concerns via in-stream transport, and the reservoir complicates the process. Monitoring fungicide exposure and exploring reservoir effect on fungicide transport is the key to develop the downstream strategies of agricultural diffusion pollution control. Here, we investigated the exposure, spatiotemporal dynamics, and ecological risk of fungicides in a reservoir-regulated agricultural basin, located in the middle of the Yangtze River Basin, China. Seven fungicides were preliminarily identified and exhibited high detection frequencies (>85 %) in subsequent quantification of water samples from three sampling activities. The total concentration of fungicides ranged from 2.47 to 560.29 ng/L, 28.35 to 274.69 ng/L, and 13.61 to 146.968 ng/L in April, September, and November, respectively. Overall, the contamination levels of fungicides were in the ascending order of April < November < September. The spatial distribution of fungicides was closely associated with the dense of cultivated land, supporting its agricultural source. Furthermore, the reservoir plays a retention role in fungicides, alleviating ecological pressure downstream during the water storage period. Yet, due to the alternation of "source" and "sink" function of the reservoir, the contribution of Zijiang River to the fungicide load in the Yangtze River Basin still needs further attention. Although there is no acute risk posed by fungicides, even in the high-exposure scenario, the chronic ecological risk could not be ignored. Agricultural intensive regions, coupled with the reservoir, provide rather substantial chronic ecological concerns. Carbendazim has been designated as a priority pollutant that contributes significantly to cumulative chronic risk. Thus, we emphasize strengthening the supervision of fungicides in surface water and rationally restricting the use of carbendazim in agricultural operations.

Gradient of suspended particulate matter hastens the multi-interface partition dynamics of atrazine and its degradation products

Herbicides are ubiquitous pollutants in estuaries because of the increased demand for food and the need for intensive agricultural systems worldwide. Multi-interface partitioning processes are inadequate for the degradation products of herbicides, especially in sediment-laden river estuaries with intensive water and sediment partitioning. Therefore, the partition characteristics of atrazine and its degradation products at the surface water-suspended particulate matter (SPM), surface water-surface sediment, and SPM-surface sediment interfaces in a typical sediment-laden river estuary were analyzed, the dominant environmental factors were described, and the related mechanisms were explored. The results showed that the partitioning priority of atrazine and its degradation products was surface water > SPM > surface sediment. The partition coefficients of these three interfaces were significantly correlated. The primary degradation products and desisopropylhydroxyatrazine tended to partition into the SPM, and desethyldesisopropylatrazine tended to partition into the surface sediment. Canonical analysis and structural equation modeling indicated that temperature, salinity, sediment pH, and SPM concentrations were the main influencing factors. In the sediment-laden river estuary, the SPM concentration was the most dominant factor. The partition coefficients increased exponentially when the SPM concentration was <150 mg/L at the SPM-surface sediment interface, leading to a rapid shift in the interface proportion of atrazine and its degradation products. In the context of climate change and human activities, the SPM concentration in the estuary was decreasing, which hastened the release potential for atrazine and its degradation products from the estuarine sediment. The investigation of the partition traits of organic degradation pollutants promotes the understanding of the multi-interface transport processes in estuaries.

Spatiotemporal partition dynamics of typical herbicides at a turbid river estuary

Organic pollutants are ubiquitous in estuarine areas, nonetheless, the transport mechanisms of herbicides in such areas are limited. Atrazine and acetochlor were analyzed in suspended particle matter (SPM), surface sediment, and surface water from the Yellow River estuary and the surrounding rivers and sea. Among these rivers, the Yellow River contributes the most herbicide flux to the sea annually. The herbicide concentrations in water and sediment decreased from the estuarine areas to the deep sea. The fugacity fraction values of atrazine exceeded 0.5 in the Yellow River estuary, which supported that the herbicides in sediment desorbed at the estuarine areas. The herbicide in the SPM showed high concentration in the outer sea and increased as a power function with decreasing SPM content. The increasing partition capacity indicated that the herbicides tended to sink into sediment, increasing the ecological risk posed by herbicides. The ecological risk of acetochlor deserves continuous attention.

An overview on the green synthesis and removal methods of pyridaben

Pyridaben is an acaricide widely used around the world to control phytophagous mites, white flies, aphids, and thrips. It is highly toxic to nontarget organisms such as predatory mites, bees, and fishes. Therefore, the occurrence and removal of pyridaben in food and the environment are worthy of concern. This mini-review focuses on pyridaben residue levels in crops, aquatic systems, and soils, as well as the green synthesis and removal of pyridaben. During the period of 2010–2022, pyridaben was reported in monitoring studies on fruits, vegetables, herbs, bee products, aquatic systems, and soils. Vegetable and agricultural soil samples exhibited the highest detection rates and residue levels. One-pot synthesis offers a green chemistry and sustainable alternative for the synthesis of pyridaben. Among traditional home treatments, peeling is the most effective way to remove pyridaben from crops. Magnetic solid-phase extraction technology has emerged as a powerful tool for the adsorption and separation of pyridaben. Photocatalytic methods using TiO2 as a catalyst were developed as advanced oxidation processes for the degradation of pyridaben in aqueous solutions. Current gaps in pyridaben removal were proposed to provide future development directions for minimizing the exposure risk of pyridaben residues to human and nontarget organisms.
