Abstract
In the present work, the biomass of Aspergillus flavus (AF) was modified using magnetic nanoparticles MnFe2O4 and metal-organic framework of ZIF-67, and its ability to remove tetracycline antibiotic (TCH) was investigated. With the help of physicochemical tests, AF biomass modification with ZIF-67 and MnFe2O4 magnetic nanoparticles was confirmed. Based on the BET value, AF-MnFe2O4-ZIF-67 (139.83 m2/g) has a higher surface value than AF (0.786 m2/g) and AF/MnFe2O4 (17.504 m2/g). Also, the magnetic saturation value revealed that the modified biomass can be isolated from the treated solution using a simple magnetic field. Maximum TCH elimination (99.04%) using AF-MnFe2O4-ZIF-67 was obtained at pH 7, adsorber mass of 1 g/L, adsorption time of 40 min, and TCH content of 10 mg/L. The thermodynamic study indicated that the TCH abatement using the desired composite is spontaneous and exothermic. The experimental results showed that the adsorption process is compatible with the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Freundlich model. The maximum adsorption capacity for AF, AF-MnFe2O4, and AF-MnFe2O4-ZIF-67 was quantified to be 9.75 mg/g, 25.59 mg/g, and 43.87 mg/g, respectively. The reusability of the desired adsorbers was examined in up to 8 steps. The outcomes showed that the adsorbers can be used several times in TCH elimination. The provided composite can remove TCH from hospital wastewater, so it can be suggested for use in water and wastewater treatment works.

Amendment of Sargassum oligocystum bio-char with MnFe 2O 4 and lanthanum MOF obtained from PET waste for fluoride removal: A comparative study. ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH 2024; 251:118641. [PMID: 38458588 DOI: 10.1016/j.envres.2024.118641] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 01/21/2024] [Revised: 03/03/2024] [Accepted: 03/05/2024] [Indexed: 03/10/2024]
Abstract
The use of biomass and waste to produce adsorbent reduces the cost of water treatment. The bio-char of Sargassum oligocystum (BCSO) was modified with MnFe2O4 magnetic particles and La-metal organic framework (MOF) to generate an efficient adsorbent (BCSO/MnFe2O4@La-MOF) for fluoride ions (F-) removal from aqueous solutions. The performance of BCSO/MnFe2O4@La-MOF was compared with BCSO/MnFe2O4 and BCSO. The characteristics of the adsorbents were investigated using various techniques, which revealed that the magnetic composites were well-synthesized and exhibited superparamagnetic properties. The maximum adsorption efficiencies (BCSO: 97.84%, BCSO/MnFe2O4: 97.85%, and BCSO/MnFe2O4@La-MOF: 99.36%) were achieved under specific conditions of pH 4, F- concentration of 10 mg/L, and adsorbent dosage of 3, 1.5, and 1 g/L for BCSO, BCSO/MnFe2O4, and BCSO/MnFe2O4@La-MOF, respectively. The results demonstrated that the experimental data adheres to a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The enthalpy, entropy, and Gibbs free energy were determined to be negative; thus, the F- adsorption was exothermic and spontaneous in the range of 25-50 °C. The equilibrium data of the process exhibited conformity with the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacities of F- ions were determined as 10.267 mg/g for BCSO, 14.903 mg/g for the BCSO/MnFe2O4, and 31.948 mg/g for BCSO/MnFe2O4@La-MOF. The KF and AT values for the F- adsorption were obtained at 21.03 mg/g (L/mg)1/n and 100 × 10+9 L/g, indicating the pronounced affinity of the BCSO/MnFe2O4@La-MOF towards F- than other samples. The significant potential of the BCSO/MnFe2O4@La-MOF magnetic composite for F- removal from industrial wastewater, makes it suitable for repeated utilization in the adsorption process.

[PMID: 38447605 DOI: 10.1016/j.envres.2024.118562] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 12/31/2023] [Revised: 02/11/2024] [Accepted: 02/25/2024] [Indexed: 03/08/2024]
Abstract
Increased levels of heavy metals (HMs) in aquatic environments poses serious health and ecological concerns. Hence, several approaches have been proposed to eliminate/reduce the levels of HMs before the discharge/reuse of HMs-contaminated waters. Adsorption is one of the most attractive processes for water decontamination; however, the efficiency of this process greatly depends on the choice of adsorbent. Therefore, the key aim of this article is to review the progress in the development and application of different classes of conventional and emerging adsorbents for the abatement of HMs from contaminated waters. Adsorbents that are based on activated carbon, natural materials, microbial, clay minerals, layered double hydroxides (LDHs), nano-zerovalent iron (nZVI), graphene, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), metal organic frameworks (MOFs), and zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are critically reviewed, with more emphasis on the last four adsorbents and their nanocomposites since they have the potential to significantly boost the HMs removal efficiency from contaminated waters. Furthermore, the optimal process conditions to achieve efficient performance are discussed. Additionally, adsorption isotherm, kinetics, thermodynamics, mechanisms, and effects of varying adsorption process parameters have been introduced. Moreover, heavy metal removal driven by other processes such as oxidation, reduction, and precipitation that might concurrently occur in parallel with adsorption have been reviewed. The application of adsorption for the treatment of real wastewater has been also reviewed. Finally, challenges, limitations and potential areas for improvements in the adsorptive removal of HMs from contaminated waters are identified and discussed. Thus, this article serves as a comprehensive reference for the recent developments in the field of adsorptive removal of heavy metals from wastewater. The proposed future research work at the end of this review could help in addressing some of the key limitations facing this technology, and create a platform for boosting the efficiency of the adsorptive removal of heavy metals.

Abstract
In the present study, β-cyclodextrin modified magnetic graphene oxide/cellulose (CN/IGO/Cel) was fabricated for removal of Cd(II) ions. The material was characterized through various analytical techniques like FTIR, XRD, TGA/DTA, SEM, TEM, and XPS. The point of zero charge of the material was obtained as 5.38. The controllable factors were optimized by Taguchi design and optimum values were: adsorbent dose-16 mg, equilibrium time-40 min, and initial concentration of Cd(II) ions-40 mg/L. The material shows high adsorption capacity (303.98 mg/g). The good fitting of Langmuir model to adsorption data (R2 = 0.9918-0.9936) revealed the monolayer coverage on adsorbent surface. Statistical physics model M 2 showed best fitting to adsorption data (R2 > 0.997), suggesting the binding of Cd(II) ions occurred on two different receptor sites (n). Stereographically n > 1 confirming vertical multi-molecular mechanisms of Cd(II) ions adsorption on CN/IGO/Cel surface. The adsorption energies (E1 = 23.71-28.95 kJ/mol; E2 = 22.69-29.38 kJ/mol) concluded the involvement of physical forces for Cd(II) ions adsorption. Kinetic data fitted well to fractal-like pseudo first-order model (R2 > 0.9952), concluding the adsorption of Cd(II) ions occurred on energetically heterogeneous surface. The kinetic analysis shows that both the film-diffusion and pore-diffusion were responsible for Cd(II) ions uptake. XPS analysis was utilized to explain the adsorption mechanism of Cd(II) ions onto CN/IGO/Cel.

Abstract
Phenols, dyes, and metal ions present in industrial wastewater can adversely affect the environment and leach biological carcinogens. Given that the current research focuses only on the removal of one or two of those categories. Herein, this work reports a novel ZIF-8@IL-MXene/Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (NIPAM) nanocomposite hydrogel that can efficiently and conveniently absorb and separate multiple pollutants from industrial wastewater. Ionic liquid (IL) was grafted onto MXene surfaces using a one-step method, and then incorporated into NIPAM monomer solutions to obtain the IL-MXene/PNIPAM composite hydrogel via in-situ polymerization. ZIF-8@IL-MXene/PNIPAM nanocomposite hydrogels were obtained by in-situ growth of ZIF-8 on the pore walls of composite hydrogels. As-prepared nanocomposite hydrogel showed excellent mechanical properties and can withstand ten repeated compressions without any damage, the specific surface area increased by 100 times, and the maximum adsorption capacities for p-nitrophenol (4-NP), crystal violet (CV), and copper ion (Cu2+) were 198.40, 325.03, and 285.65 mg g-1, respectively, at room temperature. The VPTTs of all hydrogels ranged from 33 to 35 °C, so the desorption process can be achieved in deionized water at 35-40 °C, and its adsorption capacities after five adsorption-desorption cycles decreased to 79%, 91%, and 29% for 4-NP, CV, and Cu2+, respectively. The adsorption data fitting results follow pseudo-second-order kinetics and Freundlich models, which is based on multiple interactions between the functional groups contained in hydrogels and adsorbent molecules. The hydrogel is the first to realize the high-efficiency adsorption of phenols, dyes and metal ions in industrial wastewater simultaneously, and the preparation process of hydrogels is environmentally friendly. Also, giving hydrogel multifunctional adsorption is beneficial to promote the development of multifunctional adsorption materials.

Abstract
In the present study, starch/zeolitic imidazole framework-67 (ZIF-67) modified magnetic montmorillonite nanocomposite adsorbent to remove tetracycline (TC) as an emerging antibiotic-based contaminant from aqueous media. The surface properties of the adsorbents were investigated using FTIR, XRD, SEM, EDX-Map, XPS, TEM, BET, and VSM analysis. The specific surface area of MMT, St/MMT-MnFe2O4, and St/MMT-MnFe2O4-ZIF-67 magnetic nanocomposite samples were found to be 15.63, 20.54, and 588.41 m2/g, respectively. The influence of pH, adsorbent amount, initial TC concentration, temperature, contact time, and coexisting ions on TC elimination was explored in a batch adsorption system. The kinetic and equilibrium data were well matched with the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir isotherm models, respectively. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacities of TC were obtained to be 40.24, 66.1, and 135.2 mg/g by MMT, St/MMT-MnFe2O4, and St/MMT-MnFe2O4-ZIF-67 magnetic nanocomposite adsorbents, respectively. Also, thermodynamic studies illustrated that the TC adsorption process is exothermic and spontaneous. Furthermore, the magnetic nanocomposite adsorbent St/MMT-MnFe2O4-ZIF-67 showed good reusability and could be recycled for up to five cycles. This excellent adsorption performance, coupled with the facile separation of the magnetic nanocomposite, gave St/MMT-MnFe2O4-ZIF-67 a high potential for TC removal from aqueous media.

Abstract
To efficiently remove heavy metals from wastewater, designing an adsorbent with high adsorption capacity and ease of recovery is necessary. This paper presents a novel magnetic hybridized aerogel, Fe3O4/cellulose nanofiber/polyethyleneimine/thiol-modified montmorillonite (Fe3O4/CNF/PEI/SHMMT), and explores its adsorption performance and mechanism for Pb2+, Cu2+, and Cd2+ in aqueous solutions. The hybrid aerogel has a slit-like porous structure and numerous exposed active sites, which facilitates the uptake of metal ions by adsorption. Pb2+, Cu2+, and Cd2+ adsorption by the hybridized aerogel followed the second-order kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm model, the maximum adsorption of Pb2+, Cu2+, and Cd2+ at 25 °C, pH = 6, 800 mg/L was 429.18, 381.68 and 299.40 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption process was primarily attributed to monolayer chemical adsorption, a spontaneous heat-absorption reaction. FTIR, XPS and DFT studies confirmed that the adsorption mechanisms of Fe3O4/CNF/PEI/SHMMT on Pb2+, Cu2+, and Cd2+ were mainly chelation, coordination, and ion exchange. The lowest adsorption energy of Pb2+ on the hybrid aerogel was calculated to be -2.37 Ha by DFT, which indicates that the sample has higher adsorption affinity and preferential selectivity for Pb2+. After 5 cycles, the adsorption efficiency of the aerogel was still >85 %. The incorporation of Fe3O4 improved the mechanical properties of the aerogel. The Fe3O4/CNF/PEI/SHMMT has fast magnetic responsiveness, and it is easy to be separated and recovered after adsorption, which is a promising potential for the treatment of heavy metal ions.

Abstract
In this work, we developed a thin membrane of boehmite-polyvinyl alcohol composite (BOPOM) (diameter ∼ 5 cm) grafted ZIF-67 combing sol-gel and in-situ growth methods. The fabricated materials were characterized using FT-IR, SEM, XRD, TGA, XPS, and N2 sorption techniques. Results indicate that ZIF-67 nanocrystals were well-grafted into the AlOOH-PVA matrix with reduced crystallite size. Furthermore, the decorated ZIF-67 offered additional porous structures and adsorption sites onto the membrane, enhancing their removal efficiency towards Cr6+ compared to the undecorated and pristine ZIF-67. At pH ∼5.5, the harvested ZIF-67/BOPOM exhibited the highest Cr6+ uptake capacity of ∼56.4 mg g-1. Kinetic studies showed that the chromium adsorption on the prepared materials obeyed the pseudo-second-order model, and the kinetic parameters followed the order ZIFF-67/BOPOM (0.020 mg g-1 min-1) > BOPOM (0.011 mg g-1 min-1) > ZIF-67 (0.006 mg g-1 min-1). Notably, the adsorption mechanism study revealed that adsorbed Cr6+ was reduced to Cr3+, and the reduction yield was boosted owing to grafting ZIF-67 into the BOPOM. In addition, the fabricated ZIF-67/BOPOM can simultaneously remove Cr6+ and methyl orange dye (MO) in the solution due to their synergetic effects on each other. Furthermore, the hybrid membrane ZIF-67/BOPOM showed a chromium removal efficiency of ∼78.2% after four successive adsorption-desorption cycles. This study indicates that grafting nanocrystals ZIF-67 onto the super-platform boehmite-PVA is a promising strategy to harvest an adsorbent with a high adsorption ability, cost-effectiveness, and reduced secondary pollution risks.

Abstract
Uranium-containing wastewater is a common by-product of uranium mining. Phosphate and phosphate minerals can interact with uranyl ions [U(VI)], impeding the migration of these ions by forming relatively stable uranium-containing crystalline phase(s). In this study, hydroxyapatite microtubes (HAP-T) were fabricated to sequester uranyl ions from simulated radioactive wastewater. HAP-T had excellent adsorption and stability properties; over 98.76% of U(VI) could be sequestrated by 0.25 g/L HAP-T within 5 min at pH = 4.0. The isotherms and kinetics data could be suitably reflected by the Freundlich and the pseudo second-order kinetic models, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity of HAP-T was 356.42 mg/g. The adsorption ability of HAP-T for U(VI) was inhibited when Mg2+ or SO42- ions or fulvic acid (FA) substances existed in the simulated radioactive wastewater. The inhibition by FA was attributed to its negative charges, which caused competition between FA and HAP-T for uranium sequestration. The primary mechanisms of U(VI) sequestration by HAP-T were electrostatic interactions and surface complexation. The effectiveness of HAP-T, HAP-B (bio-hydroxyapatite synthesized from fish bone), and HAP-C (commercially available synthesized hydroxyapatite) for uranium immobilization was compared; HAP-T was more effective than HAP-B or HAP-C in immobilizing uranium. HAP-T, which has a micron-sized tubular structure, is likely less mobile in groundwater than are HAP-B and HAP-C, which have nanoscale granular structures. In conclusion, HAP-T can be used to sequester and immobilize uranyl ions.

Thus, the FeOOH@coal gangue composite (FeOOH@CG) was synthesised for As(V) adsorption in this study. The results showed that α-FeOOH, β-FeOOH and Schwertmannite loaded on the surface of FeOOH@CG. Moreover, the adsorption behaviour of As(V) by FeOOH@CG was investigated under different reaction conditions, such as pH, contact time, initial concentration and co-existing anions. The optimum adsorption conditions were as follows: initial As(V) concentration of 60 mg/L, pH of 3.0 and adsorption time of 180-240 h. The adsorption capacity of FeOOH@CG for As(V) was pH-dependent and the maximum adsorption capacity was 185.94 mg/g. The presence of anions (H 2 PO 4 - , HCO 3 - and C l - ) decreased the adsorption efficiency of FeOOH@CG for As(V). The adsorption process of FeOOH@CG for As(V) could be well-described by the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model, indicating that the adsorption process mainly depended on chemical adsorption. The thermodynamic analysis suggested that the adsorption was a spontaneous and endothermic process. In addition, according to the analyses of XRD, FTIR and XPS, the dominant mechanisms of As(V) adsorption by FeOOH@CG were electrostatic attraction, complexation and precipitation. In conclusion, FeOOH@CG has great potential as an efficient and environmentally friendly adsorbent for As(V) adsorption from aqueous solution.

Hydrothermal synthesis of a photocatalyst based on Byrsonima crassifolia and TiO 2 for degradation of crystal violet by UV and visible radiation. ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH 2023; 231:116280. Abstract
This work presents a one-step synthesis methodology for preparing a hydrochar (HC) doped with TiO2 (HC-TiO2) for its application on the degradation of crystal violet (CV) using UV and visible radiation. Byrsonima crassifolia stones were used as precursors along with TiO2 particles. The HC-TiO2 sample was synthesized at 210 °C for 9 h using autogenous pressure. The photocatalyst was characterized to evaluate the TiO2 dispersion, specific surface area, graphitization degree, and band-gap value. Finally, the degradation of CV was investigated by varying the operating conditions of the system, the reuse of the catalyst, and the degradation mechanism. The physicochemical characterization of the HC-TiO2 composite showed good dispersion of TiO2 in the carbonaceous particle. The presence of TiO2 on the hydrochar surface yields a bandgap value of 1.17 eV, enhancing photocatalyst activation with visible radiation. The degradation results evidenced a synergistic effect with both types of radiation due to the hybridized π electrons in the sp2-hybridized structures in the HC surface. The degradation percentages were on average 20% higher using UV radiation than visible radiation under the following conditions: [CV] = 20 mg/L, 1 g/L of photocatalyst load, and pH = 7.0. The reusability experiments demonstrated the feasibility of reusing the HC-TiO2 material up to 5 times with a similar photodegradation percentage. Finally, the results indicated that the HC-TiO2 composite could be considered an efficient material for the photocatalytic treatment of water contaminated with CV.

Removal of cadmium and lead ions from aqueous solutions by novel dolomite-quartz@Fe 3O 4 nanocomposite fabricated as nanoadsorbent. ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH 2023; 225:115606. Abstract
The elimination of heavy metal ion contaminants from residual waters is critical to protect humans and the environment. The natural clay (dolomite and quartz) based composite Fe3O4 nanoparticles (DQ@Fe3O4) has been largely explored for this purpose. Experimental variables such as temperature, pH, heavy metal concentration, DQ@Fe3O4 dose, and contact time were optimized in details. The DQ@Fe3O4 nanocomposite was found to achieve maximum removals of 95.02% for Pb2+ and 86.89% for Cd2+, at optimal conditions: pH = 8.5, adsorbent dose = 2.8 g L-1, the temperature = 25 °C, and contact time = 140 min, for 150 mg L-1 heavy metal ion initial concentration. The Co-precipitation of dolomite-quartz by Fe3O4 nanoparticles was evidenced by SEM-EDS, TEM, AFM, FTIR, XRD, and TGA analyses. Further, the comparison to the theoretical predictions, of the adsorption kinetics, and at the equilibrium, of the composite, revealed that they fit, respectively to, the pseudo-second-order kinetic, and Langmuir isotherm. These both models were found to better describe the metal binding onto the DQ@Fe3O4 surface. This suggested a homogenous monolayer sorption dominated by surface complexation. Additionally, thermodynamic data have shown that the adsorption of heavy metal ions is considered a spontaneous and exothermic process. Moreover, Monte Carlo (MC) simulations were performed in order to elucidate the interactions occurring between the heavy metal ions and the DQ@Fe3O4 nanocomposite surface. A good correlation was found between the simulated and the experimental data. Moreover, based on the negative values of the adsorption energy (Eads), the adsorption process was confirmed to be spontaneous. In summary, the as-prepared DQ@Fe3O4 can be considered a low-cost-effective heavy metals adsorbent, and it has a great potential application for wastewater treatment.

Abstract
Nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) has been widely used in the reductive removal of contaminants from water, yet it still fights against the inherent passive cover and the raise of medium pH. In this study, nZVI was supported onto a nitrogen-doped biochar (NBC) that was prepared by pyrolyzing shrimp shell for efficiently sequestrating aqueous selenite (Se(IV)). The resultant composite (NBC-nZVI) revealed a higher reactivity and electron utilization efficiency (EUE) than the bare nZVI in Se(IV) sequestration because of the positive charge, the buffering effect and the good conductivity of NBC. The kinetic rate and EUE of NBC-nZVI were increased by 143.4% and 15.3% compared to the bare nZVI, respectively, at initial pH of 3.0. The high removal capacity of 605.4 mg g-1 for NBC-nZVI was obtained at Se(IV) concentration of 1000 mg L-1, initial pH of 3.0, NBC-nZVI dosage of 1.0 g L-1 and contact time of 12 h. Moreover, NBC-nZVI exhibited a strong tolerance to solution pHs and coexisting compounds (e.g., humic acid) and could reduce the Se(IV) concentration from 5.0 mg L-1 to below the limit of drinking water (50 μg L-1) in real-world samples. This work exemplified a utilization of shrimp shell-derived NBC to simultaneously enhance the reactivity and EUE of nZVI for reductively removing contaminants.

Abstract
The highly efficient removal of heavy metals is one of the important factors to evaluate adsorbents. In our study, carbon@chitosan@montmorillonite nanosheet (C@CS@MTN) was successfully prepared via layer-by-layer assembly for the removal of Cu2+ and Cd2+ from solution. High-intensity ultrasound peeling technology was used to release Si-O tetrahedron and Al-O octahedron from montmorillonite in order to exert their optimal adsorption potential. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, an X-ray diffractometer, BET surface area measurement, and the inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry were adopted to investigate the morphology, functional groups, and adsorption capacity of C@CS@MTN. Batch experiment results indicated that both Cu2+ and Cd2+ were effectively removed from solution with the range of pH from 2 to 6. The removal ratio of Cu2+ and Cd2+ onto C@CS@MTN increased with the rise of reaction temperature and their maximum adsorption capacities reached 1108.8 mg·g-1 and 237.4 mg·g-1, respectively, under the condition of the reaction temperature 40 °C, the reaction time 4 h, and the pH = 6. The molecular simulation calculation indicated that there was an obvious electron transfer between Si-O tetrahedron and metal cations, but not for Al-O octahedron. In comparison to Al-O octahedron, the bonding of Cu-O and Cd-O caused the Si-O bond to be broken, resulting in the deconstruction of Si-O tetrahedron and their recombination via the junction of O atoms. It was exactly the deconstruction and recombination of endogenous active units that provide more sites for metal ion adsorption.

Abstract
In this work, a class of bio-based hydrogels (LN-NH-SA hydrogel) were prepared from aminated lignin and sodium alginate. The physical and chemical properties of the LN-NH-SA hydrogel were fully characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, and other techniques. LN-NH-SA hydrogels were tested for the adsorption of dyes (methyl orange and methylene blue). The LN-NH-SA@3 hydrogel showed better adsorption efficiency for MB with a maximum adsorption capacity of 388.81 mg·g-1, a bio-based adsorbent with a high adsorption capacity. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order model and fitted to the Freundlich isotherm equation. More importantly, LN-NH-SA@3 hydrogel maintained 87.64 % adsorption efficiency after 5 cycles. Overall, the proposed hydrogel with environmentally friendly and low cost is promising for the absorption of dye contamination.

Abstract
AbstractHydrogel composites comprised of N,O carboxymethyl chitosan crosslinked with different weight ratios of acrylic acid and fabricated with nanoclay particle were prepared via gamma irradiation at 25 kGy irradiation dose. The prepared composites were coded as CsAA1Cl, CsAA2Cl and CsAA3Cl based on the weight ratio of acrylic acid to the chitosan derivative. The claimed hydrogels were characterized by FTIR, TGA and XRD. The TGA data implied that the incorporation of clay nanoparticles enhanced the thermal stability of the composites; the decomposition temperature increased up to 500 °C for CsAA3Cl. Three AFM outcomes were used to compare the surface features of the samples; topography, height and surface roughness. The topography data reveals that the nanoclay particles incorporated in CsAA3Cl are intercalated and exfoliated. Then, the optimized sorbent (CsAA3Cl) was investigated as green sorbents for chromium (VI) and lead (II). The data revealed that CsAA3Cl displayed maximum removal performance towards both lead and chromium with removal efficiencies 125 mg/g and 205 mg/g respectively at the optimum application conditions within 90 min only. Also, it was found that the optimum pH value was 9 for chromium and 8 for lead. The data proved that the adsorption of both cations followed pseudo-first order kinetic model. The prepared composites showed acceptable metal uptake capacity at three successive cycles.

Abstract
Owing to the toxicity and difficulty in degradation, how to the effective separation for the residual dyes in the aqueous solution is still an issue with great challenge in the area of environmental protection. Now, to high-efficiency removal of organic dyes from the aqueous solution, we design a unique AlOOH/CoFe2O4 adsorbent with porous CoFe2O4 nanoparticles embedded on the AlOOH fibers using a simple hydrothermal technique and calcination process. The structural properties and surface characteristics of the AlOOH/CoFe2O4 composites are detailedly analyzed by XRD, FTIR, XPS, TEM and SEM. Here, the high SBET and specific porous structure are beneficial to improve the adsorption performance of AlOOH/CoFe2O4 adsorbents. Especially, when the molar ratio of AlOOH to CoFe2O4 in the AlOOH/CoFe2O4 fibers is 1:1, an optimal performance on adsorbing anionic Congo red (CR) and cationic methyl green (MG) dyes can be obtained at pH = 6.29, where the corresponding maximum adsorption capacities reach up to 565.0 and 423.7 mg g-1, respectively. Factors leading to the change in the ability of adsorbing CR and MG dyes are systematically discussed, including contact time, temperature, initial concentrations, and pH values of the solutions. Meanwhile, the uptake of CR and MG dyes can best conform to Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetics. The thermodynamic analysis verifies that the dye adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic. Moreover, from the point view of practical application, the good reusability further makes the as-synthesized magnetic AlOOH/CoFe2O4 composite be a perfect adsorbent with efficiently removing both anionic and cationic dyes from aqueous solutions.

Abstract
The adsorbents with recyclable, large adsorption capacity and selective adsorption can effectively remove the pollution and harm of heavy metal ions in water. Therefore, two magnetic composites containing sulfur (MCP-S4 and MCP-S8) on the hyper-branched surface were prepared, furthermore, their structures were characterized and adsorption performance was analyzed by FTIR, XRD, TGA, BET, SEM, TEM, VSM and ICP. The results showed that both MCP-S4 and MCP-S8 had superparamagnetism with saturation susceptibility of 22.10 and 22.26 emu/g, and owned a specific surface area of 11.394 and 11.235 m2/g, respectively. MCP-S4 and MCP-S8 could selectively adsorb Hg2+ with the exist of Fe3+, Cu2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Mn2+, and Al3+ in solution. The adsorption kinetics accorded with pseudo-second-order model and Boyd film diffusion model, and the adsorption isotherm was fitted better with Langmuir isotherm model and D-R model, furthermore, the adsorption was an entropic-increasing and endothermic process. The removal rate of Hg2+ from simulated sewage by the two materials was more than 91%, and the adsorption retention rate was more than 85% after five adsorption-desorption cycles. The adsorption mechanism was analyzed by comparing the changes of FTIR, EDS and XPS spectra before and after adsorption. It was found that functional groups (C-N, CONH, CS, SH) could form stable chelates with Hg2+, which was the main reason why MCP-S4 and MCP-S8 could adsorb Hg2+ selectively, furthermore, S atoms of CS and -SH played a leading role in the process of adsorption. In addition, DFT calculation was also used as an auxiliary means to verify the adsorption mechanism.

Abstract
Activated carbon has been widespread applied in the removal of pollutants in wastewater. However, many biomass-derived activated carbon suffer from the challenge of controllable pore size regulation, hindering their efficient adsorption of pollutants. Herein, bamboo-derived activated carbon aerogel (BACA) has been successfully prepared through KOH high-temperature activation of cellulose aerogel which was prepared using cellulose extracted from bamboo. Bamboo cellulose aerogel provides sufficient reaction sites for KOH, which is conducive to the formation of a mass of mesoporous structures on the pore walls of the activated carbon aerogel. The optimal BACA adsorbent shows high specific surface area (2503.80 m2/g), and maximum adsorption capability for tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) reaches 863.8 mg/g at 30 ℃. The removal efficiencies of TCH are 100% and 98.4% at 40 ℃ when the initial concentrations are 500 and 700 mg/L, respectively. Adsorption kinetics and isotherm indicate that the adsorption of BACA for TCH is monolayer adsorption based on chemical adsorption. Spontaneous and endothermic adsorption processes are proved by adsorption thermodynamic studies. Additionally, coexisting ions have insignificant effect on TCH adsorption, and the BACA sample displays excellent adsorption property for five reuse cycles with a removal efficiency of 80.95%, indicating the outstanding adsorption capacity of BACA in practical application. The excellent adsorption performance provides BACA with a promising perspective to remove TCH from wastewater, and the prepared method of BACA can be widely extended to other biomass materials.

Abstract
In the Call for Papers corresponding to this Virtual Special Issue (VSI), the Editors indicated that, as is well known, emerging pollutants include a variety of substances that pose remarkable risks for the environment and public health. In fact, emerging pollutants are considered a matter of concern deserving increasing efforts to elucidate their occurrence, fate, repercussions, and alternatives to their removal from the various environmental compartments where they can be found after spreading as contaminants. Also, the Editors commented that, among the various alternatives that can be considered for achieving their successful removal, some of them are based on the use of sorbent materials, and, specifically, bioadsorbents, which are attractive due to the efficacy and low cost associated with some of them. Another alternative is related to the utilization of nanoparticle-based systems, which may be considered a promising field of research in this way. In both cases, obtaining new research results, as well as designing and programming new ways of going steps ahead in the investigation of both kinds of materials, would be key objectives. According to the previous considerations, the Editors of the VSI invited researchers having new data concerning these aspects to submit manuscripts with experimental results, discussion, reflections and prospective related to their work. With the Special Issue closed, the number of submissions received was 83, with 40 high-quality works being accepted for publication, increasing the overall knowledge on this topic by providing results that we are sure will be of value for the scientific community and the society.

Abstract
AIMS Beads containing heat-inactivated bacterial biomaterial (BBBs) were prepared for removal of cypermethrin (CPM) and the conditions for this removal were evaluated and optimized via single-factor coupled orthogonal experiments based on five factors. The adsorption characteristics of BBBs and the binding mechanism were then explored. METHODS AND RESULTS Results showed that the adsorption rate of CPM could reach 98% with beads prepared under optimized conditions: equal volumes of Lactobacillus cell debris derived from 1×1011 CFU; 2% hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin and 2.5% activated carbon concentration, were mixed to give mixture TM, and this and SA, was mixed 1:4 with sodium alginate (SA) and beads were prepared using a 26-Gauge needle). The best adsorption conditions were initial CPM concentration of 10 mg l-1, incubation time of 24 h, and rotational speed of 180 rpm. BBBs have a well-formed structure and abundant surface functional groups, such as -COOH, -OH, -NH, -CH, -CO, -C=C. The adsorption process conformed to pseudo-second-order kinetic, and it was also a Freundlich monolayer adsorption, and the calculated maximum adsorption capacity was 9.69 mg g-1 under optimized conditions. CONCLUSIONS BBBs showed the highest CPM removal capacity and a good tolerance ability. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY Our results provided a theoretical foundation for developing an adsorbent with heat-inactivated Lactobacillus plantarum (L. plantarum) RS60 for removing CPM in wastewater or drinks.

Abstract
The main objective of this study was to banana waste-derived activated carbon (BWAC) make a high pore surface area was prepared and composited with Fe3O4 via a facile hydrothermal method. Various physiochemical characteristics of the prepared samples were evaluated using XRD, FTIR, FESEM, Raman Spectroscopy and XPS analysis. In addition, cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analyses were performed to determine the electrochemical properties of the prepared samples. The Fe3O4/BWAC sample showed a higher capacitance (285 F g-1) than BWAC at the same scan rate of 10 mV s-1. The capacitive deionization (CDI) cell configuration was varied, and its electro-sorption and defluoridization efficiencies were analyzed during the lead (Pb2+) removal 90%. An asymmetric combination of electrodes in the CDI cell exhibited better heavy metal removal performance, possibly due to the synergistic effect of the high surface area and the balance between the active adsorption site and the overlapping effect of the EDL. As a result, Fe3O4/BWAC could be a potential resource for supercapacitors and CDI electrodes, and the novel Fe3O4/BWAC nanocomposites outstanding performance suggests that they could be helpful for future energy storage and environmental applications.

Abstract
Sulfidated nano zero-valent iron (S-nZVI) was used to remove various pollutants from wastewater. However, the instability, poor dispersibility, and low electron transfer efficiency of S-nZVI limit its application. Herein, graphene oxide supported sulfidated nano zero-valent iron (S-nZVI@GO) was successfully synthesized using graphene oxide (GO) as a carrier. The properties of S-nZVI@GO were characterized by scanning electron microscopy coupled to X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) concerning the surface morphology, crystalline structure, and elemental components. S-nZVI@GO displayed an excellent capacity for antimony (Sb) removal under aerobic conditions (96.7%), with a high adsorption capacity (Qmax = 311.75 mg/g). It maintained a high removal rate (over 90%) during a wide pH range (3-9). More importantly, S-nZVI@GO activated the molecular oxygen in water via a single-electron pathway to produce •O2- and H2O2, and then oxidized trivalent antimony (Sb(III)) to pentavalent antimony (Sb(V)) and further separated it by synergistic adsorption and co-precipitation. Therefore, S-nZVI@GO shows excellent potential for Sb contamination remediation.

Abstract
Abstract
Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), acrylic acid (AA), and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) were used as monomers, and ammonium persulfate was used as an initiator. Orthogonal tests were optimized the experimental condition, and aqueous polymerization was used to prepare poly-β-cyclodextrin/polyvinyl alcohol/polyacrylic acid (β-CD/PVA/PAA) hydrogel. The samples were characterized by FT-IR (Fourier transform infrared), SEM (Scanning electron microscopy), and XRD (X-ray diffraction). β-CD/PVA/PAA hydrogel was analyzed, which influenced external environmental factors on the β-CD/PVA/PAA hydrogel adsorption performance, and the kinetic behavior of β-CD/PVA/PAA hydrogel on ciprofloxacin (CIP) adsorption was explored. The results concluded that the prepared β-CD/PVA/PAA hydrogel has a well-defined three-dimensional network structure. The decrease in the pH of the CIP solution and the adsorption temperature reduces the adsorption reaction of β-CD/PVA/PAA hydrogel on CIP. The kinetics of CIP adsorption by β-CD/PVA/PAA hydrogel confirmed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R
2 > 0.997), the maximum equilibrium adsorption amounts is 372.12 mg/g, the removal rate reaches 74.42%. The adsorption process was mainly chemisorption, the adsorption isotherm fits the Freundlich adsorption isotherm model (R
2 > 0.946), and the adsorption process was heterogeneous with multi-molecular layer adsorption. The adsorption process inclined more toward the adsorption of inhomogeneous multi-molecular layers. The β-CD/PVA/PAA hydrogel retained 80% adsorption properties after three adsorption-desorption under optimal conditions.

Abstract
Heavy metals are present in wastewater generated by industrial sectors, posing a threat to the environment, including surface and groundwater resources. With this in mind, there is a growing interest in finding alternative yet effective methods of removing heavy metal ions from industrial wastewater. Sorption is one of the techniques being readily applied due to the simplicity, high efficiency, production of small amounts of sludge, low investment, and the feasibility of the process over a wide range of pH and temperature. This paper deals with the treatment of industrial wastewater from electropolishing of stainless steel containing high concentrations of metal ions Fe(III), Cr(III), Ni(II), and Cu(II). Taking into account the effectiveness, availability and applicability of biosorbents for acidic wastewater, orange peels, algae, Eclipta alba, and eggshells were selected for the study. Sorption tests were carried out for Eclipta alba and the results obtained showed a best fit for the second-order kinetic model (R2 > 0.99) and the Langmuir isotherm model (R2 > 0.99). Maximum adsorption capacity was 17.92 mg/g for mixture of metal ions. The potential use of dried and calcinated eggshells was established. Both materials achieved a high removal rate of over 95%. Iron and chromium are removed from the solution first (about 100% and 90%, respectively), followed by nickel and copper ions. FT-IR and SEM with EDS measurements used to characterize materials, together with laboratory tests using real industrial effluent, made it possible to determine their mechanism of action. Specific surface area was determined for all tested materials and the values were: 1.63, 0.15 and 5.15 m2/g for Eclipta alba, dried eggshells and calcinated eggshells, respectively. The results provide grounds for optimism in the application of selected materials for industrial wastewater treatment.

Abstract
Considerable concern exists regarding water contamination by various pollutants, such as conventional pollutants (e.g., heavy metals and organics) and emerging micropollutants (e.g., consumer care products and interfering endocrine-related compounds). Currently, academics are continuously exploring sustainability-related materials and technologies to remove contaminants from wastewater. Magnetic starch-based adsorbents (MSAs) can combine the advantages of starch and magnetic nanoparticles, which exhibit unique critical features such as availability, cost-effectiveness, size, shape, crystallinity, magnetic properties, stability, adsorption properties, and excellent surface properties. However, limited reviews on MSAs' preparations, characterizations, applications, and adsorption mechanisms could be available nowadays. Hence, this review not only focuses on their activation and preparation methods, including physical (e.g., mechanical activation treatment, microwave radiation treatment, sonication, and extrusion), chemical (e.g., grafting, cross-linking, oxidation and esterification), and enzymatic modifications to enhance their adsorption properties, but also offers an all-round state-of-the-art analysis of the full range of its characterization methods, the adsorption of various contaminants, and the underlying adsorption mechanisms. Eventually, this review focuses on the recycling and reclamation performance and highlights the main gaps in the areas where further studies are warranted. We hope that this review will spark an interdisciplinary discussion and bring about a revolution in the applications of MSAs.
