Abstract
The original objective was to explore the potential benefiting effects of three prebiotics in hybrid grouper (Epinephelus lanceolatus♂ × Epinephelus fuscoguttatus♀). Therefore, three experimental diets (basal diet + 1% fructooligosaccharide, Diet F; basal diet + 1% inulin, Diet I; basal diet + 0.3% mannan-oligosaccharide, Diet M) and one basal diet (Diet C) were prepared and a feeding trial was conducted. However, at the end of the fourth week into the feeding experiment, a water-leaking accident occurred and fishes of all groups went through an unexpected air exposure event. Surprisingly, different prebiotic-supplemented groups showed significantly different air exposure tolerance: the mortality of M group was significantly lower (P ≤ 0.05) than all the other groups. Examination of antioxidant, non-specific immunity, and stress parameters revealed that comparing to control group, M group showed significantly increased catalase (CAT), acid phosphatase (ACP), and alkaline phosphatase (AKP) activities, decreased superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, and similar cortisol level (P ≤ 0.05). Real-time PCR experiment revealed that M group significantly increased the expression of CAT, glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) genes in head kidney (P ≤ 0.05). Overall, M exhibited the best anti-air exposure/antioxidative stress effects among the three prebiotics and could be considered a promising feed additive to relieve air exposure/oxidative stress in hybrid grouper culture.

Abstract
Dermatological manifestations are common in systemic diseases, such as chronic kidney disease. The present study investigated the clinical features and possible influencing factors of pruritus in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF). A total of 382 inpatients were enrolled from the Department of Nephrology at The Second Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University. A total of 138 subjects were hemodialysis patients, 41 were peritoneal dialysis patients, and 203 were chronic renal failure patients. The patients' clinical performance was observed, and the data was recorded for analysis. The prevalence of pruritus in hemodialysis patients was greater than that in peritoneal dialysis patients. A total of 187 patients were accompanied by xerodermia and 109 patients had pruritus at the same time. With effective and regular dialysis, pruritus could be alleviated in 40% of patients. The intensity of pruritus in the enrolled patients ranged from mild itching to irritability during day and night periods. Moreover, pruritus was intermittent or persistent, and/or limited to generalized. Following treatment, 35% of patients had poor results. A significant difference was noted in the levels of serum urea nitrogen, creatinine, serum phosphorus, calcium × phosphorus, and parathyroid hormone (PTH) between patients with pruritus and non-pruritus. Xerodermia is a common skin manifestation in patients with chronic renal failure and is associated with the occurrence of pruritus. Local cold and heat stimulation can relieve pruritus to some extent, and adequate hemodialysis can also relieve itching.

Abstract
AIM Pruritus is a common comorbidity in chronic liver disease. The aim of this study was to clarify the prevalence of pruritus and its characteristics in patients with chronic liver disease. METHODS A total of 1631 patients with chronic liver disease who attended one of nine joint-research facilities from January to June 2016 were enrolled. We investigated the prevalence of pruritus, itch location, itch duration, daily itch fluctuation, seasonal itch exacerbation, treatment drugs, and therapeutic effects using a medical interview questionnaire. RESULTS The median age was 66 years and 890 (54.6%) patients were women. The prevalence of pruritus was 40.3% (658/1631), and it differed according to the underlying liver disease. The most frequent body location for pruritus was on the back (63.1%). Pruritus duration was more than 6 months in 252 (38.3%) patients. The severity of pruritus, assessed using a visual analog scale, was higher during the day than at night (median, 4 vs. 3, P < 0.001). Seasonal exacerbation was observed in 296 (45.0%) patients. Although 301 (45.7%) patients were treated with antipruritic agents, 57.8% (174/301) patients reported an insufficient effect. Active hepatitis B virus infection (odds ratio [OR], 2.51; P = 0.043), primary biliary cholangitis (OR, 3.69; P = 0.018), diabetes (OR, 1.57; P = 0.010), and aspartate aminotransferase ≥60 U/L (OR, 2.06; P = 0.011) were independent factors associated with pruritus. CONCLUSION The prevalence of pruritus varies according to the chronic liver disease etiology. Underlying liver disease, aspartate aminotransferase ≥60 U/L, and comorbid diabetes are factors associated with pruritus in patients with chronic liver disease.

Effect of dietary histamine supplementation on growth, digestive enzyme activities and morphology of intestine and hepatopancreas in the Chinese mitten crab Eriocheir sinensis. Abstract
A 28-days feeding experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of histamine on digestive physiology of the Chinese mitten crab, Eriocheir sinensis. Four experimental diets were supplemented with histamine at 0, 1, 2, 4 g/kg. Histamine supplementation had no effect on growth. The activities of digestive enzyme decreased significantly at first (days 7 and 14) (p < 0.05) and then increased or finally slightly recovered in the hepatopancreas and intestinal tract on the 28th day. Tryptase and amylase activities were inhibited significantly in each histamine-treated group on day 7 as compared to the control (p < 0.05). On day 7, 14 and 28, tryptase mRNA relative expression in the histamine treatments correlated positively with the histamine concentration (p < 0.05). Histopathologic analyses showed serious alterations in hepatopancreas, moderate alterations in the hindgut and intestinal bulb, and no alterations in the midgut. In hepatopancreas, low levels (1 g/kg) of histamine caused an increase in the number of B-cells. High levels (4 g/kg) of histamine increased the number of R-cells, which were also highly vacuolized. In extreme cases, the basal lamina was detached from the tubule. In the intestinal bulb and hindgut, high levels of histamine (4 g/kg) decreased the density of reserve inclusion cells. Thus, this indicated that histamine had dose-dependent effect on the activity of digestive enzymes and the morphology of the intestine and hepatopancreas.

Abstract
Age related cataract is the leading cause of blindness associated with accumulation of oxidative stress in the eye lens. The present investigation reveals the rational of the beneficial effects of the natural compound C-phycocyanin (C-PC) is beneficial when administered to rat pups to protect against the secondary effects of sodium selenite induced cataractogenesis. A single subcutaneous dose of sodium selenite (19 μmol/kg body weight) on the 10th day of postpartum is adequate to induce cataract in rat pups. Serum biochemical parameters, such as the level of electrolytes, mean activities of anti-oxidant enzymes i.e. superoxide dismutase, catalase and reduced glutathione were observed to be significantly altered during selenite induced cataractogenic process. Histopathological examination revealed signs of degradation of normal cell architecture in the liver, kidney and eye lens. Interestingly, the deleterious effects of sodium selenite toxicity were restored with the simultaneous treatment with C-PC. The results suggest that an administration of 200 mg/kg body weight of C-PC has the ability to prevent/alter the secondary changes reflected in the serum biochemical and histological modifications in rats exposed to sodium selenite. These results complement the beneficial role of C-PC of cyanobacterial origin as a efficacious anti-cataractogenic agent against sodium selenite toxicity.
