Abstract
Edible food packaging has emerged as a critical focal point in the discourse on sustainability, prompting the development of innovative solutions, notably in the realm of edible pouches. Often denoted as sachets, bags, or packets, these distinct designs have garnered attention owing to their water-soluble and heat-sealable attributes, tailored explicitly for single-use applications encompassing oils, instant or dry foods, and analogous products. While extant literature extensively addresses diverse facets of edible films, this review addresses a conspicuous void by presenting a consolidated and specialized overview dedicated to the intricate domain of edible pouches. Through a meticulous synthesis of current research, we aim to illuminate the trajectory of advancements made thus far, delving into critical aspects, including materials, production techniques, functional attributes, consumer perceptions, and regulatory considerations. By furnishing a comprehensive perspective on the potential, challenges, and opportunities inherent in edible pouches, our overarching aim is to stimulate collaborative endeavors in research, innovation, and exploration. In doing so, we aspire to catalyze the broader adoption of sustainable packaging solutions tailored to the exigencies of single-use applications.

Abstract
The depletion of fossil resources and the growing demand for plastic waste reduction has put industries and academic researchers under pressure to develop increasingly sustainable packaging solutions that are both functional and circularly designed. In this review, we provide an overview of the fundamentals and recent advances in biobased packaging materials, including new materials and techniques for their modification as well as their end-of-life scenarios. We also discuss the composition and modification of biobased films and multilayer structures, with particular attention to readily available drop-in solutions, as well as coating techniques. Moreover, we discuss end-of-life factors, including sorting systems, detection methods, composting options, and recycling and upcycling possibilities. Finally, regulatory aspects are pointed out for each application scenario and end-of-life option. Moreover, we discuss the human factor in terms of consumer perception and acceptance of upcycling.

Abstract
Due to the unstable chemical properties and poor water solubility of carotenoids, their processing adaptation and oral bioavailability are poor, limiting their application in hydrophilic food systems. Lipid-biomacromolecular compounds can be excellent carriers for carotenoid delivery by taking full advantage of the solubilization of lipids to non-polar nutrients and the water dispersion and gastrointestinal controlled release properties of biomacromolecules. This paper reviewed the research progress of lipid-biomacromolecular compounds as encapsulation and delivery carriers of carotenoids and summarized the material selection and preparation methods for biomacromolecular compounds. By considering the interaction between the two, this paper briefly discussed the effect of these compounds on carotenoid water solubility, stability, and bioavailability, emphasizing their delivery effect on carotenoids. Finally, various challenges and future trends of lipid-biomacromolecular compounds as carotenoid delivery carriers were discussed, providing new insight into efficient loading and delivery of carotenoids.

Abstract
In this paper the production of biopolymeric blends of poly(butylene succinate) PBS and plasticized whey protein (PWP), obtained from a natural by-product from cheese manufacturing, has been investigated for the production of films and/or sheets. In order to add the highest possible whey protein content, different formulations (from 30 to 50 wt.%) were studied. It was found that by increasing the amount of PWP added to PBS, the mechanical properties were worsened accordingly. This trend was attributed to the low compatibility between PWP and PBS. Consequently, the effect of the addition of soy lecithin and glycerol monostearate (GMS) as compatibilizers was investigated and compared to the use of whey protein modified with oleate and laurate groups obtained by Schotten-Baumann reaction. Soy lecithin and the Schotten-Baumann modified whey were effective in compatibilizing the PWP/PBS blend. In fact, a significant increase in elastic modulus, tensile strength and elongation at break with respect to the not compatibilized blend was observed and the length of aliphatic chains as well as the degree of modification of the Schotten–Baumann proteins affected the results. Moreover, thanks to DSC investigations, these compatibilizers were also found effective in increasing the PBS crystallinity.

Abstract
Chemical modification of whey proteins allows manipulation of their characteristics, such as surface charge and hydrophobicity. Herein, we report the influence of hydrophobization accomplished by a preacetylation stage and a subsequent combined acetylation-heating process on some characteristics of whey proteins. Hydrophobization extensively (≥90%) acetylated the available free amino groups of whey proteins. The produced protein particles were nanoscaled (75 nm) and had a significantly low isoelectric point (3.70). Hydrophobization increased the β-sheet content of whey proteins and significantly decreased the solvent exposure of tyrosine residues. It also conferred a less compact tertiary structure to the proteins and decreased the extent of disulfide-bond formation by heating. The mobility of α-lactalbumin in nonreducing electrophoresis gel increased as a consequence of hydrophobization. Then, the ability of whey proteins to catalyze hydroquinone autoxidation was examined, and it was found that the activity decreased as a result of hydrophobization. The catalytic activity of the proteins was associated with the free-amino-group content, which determined the extent of cation-π attractive interactions; ζ-potential, which determined the extent of anion-π repulsive interactions; and π-stacking between hydrophobic residues and the electron cloud of the quinone ring.

Abstract
Protein based films are nowadays also prepared with the aim of replacing expensive, crude oil-based polymers as environmentally friendly and renewable alternatives. The protein structure determines the ability of protein chains to form intra- and intermolecular bonds, whereas the degree of cross-linking depends on the amino acid composition and molecular weight of the protein, besides the conditions used in film preparation and processing. The functionality varies significantly depending on the type of protein and affects the resulting film quality and properties. This paper reviews the methods used in examination of molecular interactions in protein films and discusses how these intermolecular interactions can be quantified. The qualitative determination methods can be distinguished by structural analysis of solutions (electrophoretic analysis, size exclusion chromatography) and analysis of solid films (spectroscopy techniques, X-ray scattering methods). To quantify molecular interactions involved, two methods were found to be the most suitable: protein film swelling and solubility. The importance of non-covalent and covalent interactions in protein films can be investigated using different solvents. The research was focused on whey protein, whereas soy protein and wheat gluten were included as further examples of proteins.
