The varying mass ratios of soft and hard segments in waterborne polyurethane films: Performances of thermal conductivity and adhesive properties

Breathable and wearable graphene/waterborne polyurethane coated regenerated polyethylene terephthalate fabrics for motion sensing and thermal therapy

The functional utilization of recycled polymers has emerged as a current prominent and timely subject. Flexible wearable devices with high sensitivity to conductivity have garnered significant attention in the fields of human healthcare monitoring and personal heat management. One significant obstacle that needs to be addressed is the simultaneous maintenance of both sensing functionality and durability in composite fabrics. In this paper, a collection of durable, breathable, and flexible smart fabric was produced using the scratch coating method. The fabrics were created by utilizing a regenerated polyethylene terephthalate fabric as a base material, incorporating graphene microsheets (G) as a conductive agent, and applying a waterborne polyurethane layer as a surface protective coating. Furthermore, an investigation was conducted to assess their sensing performance and electrothermal performance. The composite fabric exhibits significant advantages in terms of high conductivity (592 S/m), wide strain range, high sensitivity (Gauge factor = 6.04) and fantabulous dynamic stability (2000 cycles) at a mass ratio of Graphene/WPU loading of 8:2. These sensors were successfully utilized to monitor various degrees of real-time human body movements, ranging from significant deformation bending of elbows to slight deformation swallowing. Furthermore, the sensors also exhibit a significant electric heating effect. Specifically, when a voltage of 10 V is applied, the sensors can reach a steady state temperature of 53.3 °C within a mere 30 s. This discovery holds potential for the development of wearable heaters that can be used for on-demand thermal therapy, functional protective clothing, and medical electric heating wearables.

Multicolor Luminescence of a Polyurethane Derivative Driven by Heat/Light-Induced Aggregation

The study of aggregate formation and its controllable effect on luminescence behavior has a far-reaching influence in establishing a universal aggregation photophysical mechanism. In this paper, we obtained clusters with different extents of aggregation by heat-induced or light-triggered aggregation of a new polyurethane derivative (PUE). The controllable regulation of multicolor fluorescence of a single (nondoped) polymeric material is realized. The luminescence behavior of PUE varies with microscopic control of the aggregation structure. Compared with the powder state, the enhanced atom-atom and group-group interactions of PUE-gel effectively limit the nonradiative transitions in the excited state and result in a red-shift in emission. This work avoids complex organic synthesis and demonstrates a simple strategy to induce aggregation and regulate the emitting color of macromolecules, providing a template for developing new materials for multicolor fluorescence. In addition, a pattern was constructed with encryption, anticounterfeiting, and information transmission functions which provide a proof-of-concept demonstration of the practical potential of PUE as a smart material.

The purpose of this review article is to outline the extended applications of polyurethane (PU)-based nanocomposites incorporated with conductive polymeric particles as well as to condense an outline on the chemistry and fabrication of polyurethanes (PUs). Additionally, we discuss related research trends of PU-based conducting materials for EMI shielding, sensors, coating, films, and foams, in particular those from the past 10 years. PU is generally an electrical insulator and behaves as a dielectric material. The electrical conductivity of PU is imparted by the addition of metal nanoparticles, and increases with the enhancing aspect ratio and ordering in structure, as happens in the case of conducting polymer fibrils or reduced graphene oxide (rGO). Nanocomposites with good electrical conductivity exhibit noticeable changes based on the remarkable electric properties of nanomaterials such as graphene, RGO, and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Recently, conducting polymers, including PANI, PPY, PTh, and their derivatives, have been popularly engaged as incorporated fillers into PU substrates. This review also discusses additional challenges and future-oriented perspectives combined with here-and-now practicableness.

Self-Adhesive, Stretchable, Biocompatible, and Conductive Nonvolatile Eutectogels as Wearable Conformal Strain and Pressure Sensors and Biopotential Electrodes for Precise Health Monitoring

Conductive stretchable hydrogels and ionogels consisting of ionic liquids can have interesting application as wearable strain and pressure sensors and bioelectrodes due to their soft nature and high conductivity. However, hydrogels have a severe stability problem because of water evaporation, whereas ionogels are not biocompatible or even toxic. Here, we demonstrate self-adhesive, stretchable, nonvolatile, and biocompatible eutectogels that can always form conformal contact to skin even during body movement along with their application as wearable strain and pressure sensors and biopotential electrodes for precise health monitoring. The eutectogels consist of a deep eutectic solvent that has high conductivity, waterborne polyurethane that is an elastomer, and tannic acid that is an adhesive. They can have an elongation at a break of 178%, ionic conductivity of 0.22 mS/cm, and adhesion force of 12.5 N/m to skin. They can be used as conformal strain sensors to accurately monitor joint movement and breath. They can be even used as pressure sensors with a piezoresistive sensitivity of 284.4 kPa^-1 to precisely detect subtle physical movements like arterial pulses, which can provide vital cardiovascular information. Moreover, the eutectogels can be used as nonvolatile conformal electrodes to monitor epidermal physiological signals, such as electrocardiogram (ECG) and electromyogram (EMG).
