Efficient preparation of chemically crosslinked recyclable photodeformable azobenzene polymer fibers with high processability and reconstruction ability via a facile post-crosslinking method

An Evolutionary Review of Hemoperfusion Adsorbents: Materials, Preparation, Functionalization, and Outlook

Accumulation of pathogenic factors in the blood may cause irreversible damage and may even be life-threatening. Hemoperfusion is an effective technique for eliminating pathogenic factors, which is widely used in the treatment of various diseases including liver failure, renal failure, sepsis, and others. Hemoperfusion adsorbents are crucial in this process as they specifically bind and remove the target pathogenic factors. This review describes the development of hemoperfusion adsorbents, detailing the different properties exhibited by inorganic materials, organic polymers, and new materials. Advances in natural and synthetic polymers and novel materials manufacturing techniques have driven the expansion of hemoperfusion adsorbents in clinical applications. Stimuli-responsive (smart responsive) adsorbents with controllable molecular binding properties have many promising and environmentally friendly biomedical applications. Knowledge gaps, future research directions, and prospects for hemoperfusion adsorbents are discussed.

Dual stimulus-responsive renewable nanoadsorbent for selective adsorption of low-density lipoprotein in serum

Selective removal of ultra-high low-density lipoprotein (LDL) from the blood of hyperlipemia patients using hemoperfusion is considered an efficient method to prevent the deterioration of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Based on the exceptional structure-function properties of multistimulus-responsive materials, we developed a magnetic photorenewable nanoadsorbent (Fe3O4@SiO2@Azo-COOH) with outstanding selectivity and regenerative characteristics, featuring functionalized azobenzene as the ligand. The dual-stimulus response endowed Fe3O4@SiO2@Azo-COOH with rapid separation and photoregenerative properties. The adsorbent demonstrated excellent removal efficiency of LDL with an adsorption capacity of 15.06 mg/g, and highly repetitive adsorption performance (≥5 cycles) under irradiation. Fe3O4@SiO2@Azo-COOH also exhibited remarkable adsorption properties and selectivity in human serum, with adsorption capacities of 10.93, 21.26 and 9.80 mg/g for LDL, total cholesterol and triglycerides and only 0.77 mg/g for high-density lipoprotein (HDL), resulting in a 93% selective adsorption difference (LDL/HDL). Complete green regeneration of the nanoadsorbent was achieved through a simple regeneration process, maintaining a recovery rate of 99.4% after five regeneration experiments. By combining dynamic perfusion experiment with micromagnetic microfluidics, the LDL content decreased by 16.6%. Due to its superior adsorption capacity and regenerative properties, the dual stimulus-responsive nanosorbent is considered a potential hemoperfusion adsorbent.

Multifunctional UV-NIR Dual Light-Responsive Soft Actuators from a Main-Chain Azobenzene Semi-Crystalline Poly(ester-amide) Doped with Polydopamine Nanoparticles

The development of soft photoactuators with multifunctionality and improved performance is highly important for their broad applications. Herein, we report on a facile and efficient strategy for fabricating such photoactuators with UV-NIR dual light-responsivity, room-temperature 3D shape reprogrammability and reprocessability, and photothermal healability by doping polydopamine (PDA) nanoparticles into a main-chain azobenzene semi-crystalline poly(ester-amide) (PEA). The PEA/PDA nanoparticle composite was readily processed into free-standing films with enhanced mechanical and photomechanical properties compared with the blank PEA films. Its physically crosslinked uniaxially oriented films showed rapid and highly reversible photochemically induced bending/unbending under the UV/visible light irradiation at room temperature in both the air atmosphere and water. When exposed to the NIR light, they (and their bilayer films formed with a polyimide film) exhibited photothermally induced bending even at a temperature much lower than their crystalline-to-isotropic phase transition temperature based on a unique mechanism (involving photothermally induced polymer chain relaxation due to the disruption of their hydrogen bonds). The room-temperature 3D shape reprogrammability and reprocessability and photothermal healability of the composite polymer films were also demonstrated. Such multifunctional dual light-responsive photoactuators with well-balanced mechanical robustness, actuation stability, 3D shape reprogrammability/reprocessability and photothermal healability hold much promise in various photoactuating applications.

Adaptable covalently cross-linked fibers

Fibers, with over 100 million tons produced each year, have been widely used in various areas. Recent efforts have focused on improving mechanical properties and chemical resistance of fibers via covalent cross-linking. However, the covalently cross-linked polymers are usually insoluble and infusible, and thus fiber fabrication is difficult. Those reported require complex multiple-step preparation processes. Herein, we present a facile and effective strategy to prepare adaptable covalently cross-linked fibers by direct melt spinning of covalent adaptable networks (CANs). At processing temperature, dynamic covalent bonds are reversibly dissociated/associated and the CANs are temporarily disconnected to enable melt spinning; at the service temperature, the dynamic covalent bonds are frozen, and the CANs exhibit favorable structural stability. We demonstrate the efficiency of this strategy via dynamic oxime-urethane based CANs, and successfully prepare adaptable covalently cross-linked fibers with robust mechanical properties (maximum elongation of 2639%, tensile strength of 87.68 MPa, almost complete recovery from an elongation of 800%) and solvent resistance. Application of this technology is demonstrated by an organic solvent resistant and stretchable conductive fiber.

Photorenewable Azobenzene Polymer Brush-Modified Nanoadsorbent for Selective Adsorption of LDL in Serum

The elevated concentration of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is recognized as a leading factor of hyperlipidemia (HLP), and selective adsorption of serum LDL is regarded as a practical therapy. Based on the superior structure-function characteristics of stimuli-responsive materials, a photorenewable nanoadsorbent (SiO₂@Azo@Gly) with high selectivity and reusability was developed using azobenzene as the functional ligand. Its principle was certified by the preparation of silicon nanoparticles with atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP)-initiating groups via a sol-gel reaction and their subsequent grafting of azobenzene polymer brushes by surface-initiated ATRP, followed by modification with glycine. Immobilization of carboxylated azobenzene polymer brushes onto the nanoparticles endowed SiO₂@Azo@Gly with high adsorption selectivity and reusability. The advanced nanoadsorbent exhibited excellent LDL adsorption capacity at about 27 mg/g and could be regenerated by illumination with high efficiency (circulations ≥ 5); this was further verified by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) analysis. SiO₂@Azo@Gly also demonstrated superior adsorption efficiency and selectivity in serum from HLP patients, the respective adsorption capacities of LDL, triglyceride, and total cholesterol were about 15.65, 24.48, and 28.36 mg/g, and the adsorption to high-density lipoprotein (cardioprotective effect) was only about 3.66 mg/g. Green regeneration of the nanoadsorbent could be achieved completely through a simple photoregeneration process, and the recovery rate was still 97.9% after five regeneration experiments.

Reprocessable Photodeformable Azobenzene Polymers

Photodeformable azobenzene (azo) polymers are a class of smart polymers that can efficiently convert light energy into mechanical power, holding great promise in various photoactuating applications. They are typically of crosslinked polymer networks with highly oriented azo mesogens embedded inside. Upon exposure to the light of appropriate wavelength, they experience dramatic order parameter change following the configuration change of the azo units. This could result in the generation and accumulation of the gradient microscopic photomechanical force in the crosslinked polymer networks, thus leading to their macroscopic deformation. So far, a great number of photodeformable azo polymers have been developed, including some unoriented ones showing photodeformation based on different mechanisms. Among them, photodeformable azo polymers with dynamic crosslinking networks (and some uncrosslinked ones) have aroused particular interest recently because of their obvious advantages over those with stable chemical crosslinking structures such as high recyclability and reprocessability. In this paper, I provide a detailed overview of the recent progress in such reprocessable photodeformable polymers. In addition, some challenges and perspectives are also presented.

Active Ester Functionalized Azobenzenes as Versatile Building Blocks

Azobenzenes are important molecular switches that can still be difficult to functionalize selectively. A high yielding Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling method under mild conditions for the introduction of NHS esters to azobenzenes and diazocines has been established. Yields were consistently high with very few exceptions. The NHS functionalized azobenzenes react with primary amines quantitatively. These amines are ubiquitous in biological systems and in material science.
