Abstract
There is a growing interest in utilizing renewable biomass resources to manufacture environmentally friendly active food packaging, against the petroleum-based polymers. Cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) have received significant attention recently due to their sustainability, biodegradability, and widely available sources. CNFs are generally obtained through chemical or physical treatment, wherein the original surface chemistry and interfacial interactions can be changed if the functionalization process is applied. This review focuses on promising and sustainable methods of functionalization to broaden the potential uses of CNFs in active food packaging. Novel aspects, including functionalization before, during and after cellulose isolation, and functionalization during and after material processing are addressed. The CNF-involved structural construction including films, membranes, hydrogels, aerogels, foams, and microcapsules, is illustrated, which enables to explore the correlations between structure and performance in active food packaging. Additionally, the enhancement of CNFs on multiple properties of active food packaging are discussed, in which the interaction between active packaging systems and encapsulated food or the internal environment are highlighted. This review emphasizes novel approaches and emerging trends that have the potential to revolutionize the field, paving the way for advancements in the properties and applications of CNF-involved active food packaging.

Abstract
This bibliometric study includes publications on the use of active packaging in food packaging from 2000 to 2021. The number of research related to this study tends to increase annually with an annual growth rate of 23.76%, totaling 857 articles. In this study it was found that the most influential countries in the field of Active Packaging are Spain, China, and Brazil. Moreover, the International Journal of Biological Macromolecules and Nerín are the most prolific journal and author in scientific publications, respectively. Active packaging, food packaging, and antimicrobial are often used based on the total link strength out of the 1,775 keywords. The keyword analysis based on time found new terms that are being studied by many researchers, namely, bioplastics as environmentally friendly packaging, based on polysaccharides and nanoparticles, which have the potential to be developed or collaborated for breakthroughs. Therefore, the use of active packaging shows a promising trend for the packaging industry in the future.

Abstract
Fruits and vegetables contain numerous nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, phenolic compounds, and dietary fibers. They reduce the incidence of cardiovascular diseases and the risk of certain chronic diseases, and improve the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capacity. Moreover, melatonin was found in various fruits and vegetables species. Melatonin acts as a multifunctional compound to participate in various physiological processes. In recent years, many advances have been found that melatonin is also appraised as a key modulator on the fruits and vegetables post-harvest preservation. Fruits and vegetables post-harvest usually elicit reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and accumulation. Excess ROS stimulate cell damage, protein structure destruction, and tissue aging, and thereby reducing their quality. Numerous studies find that exogenous application of melatonin modulates ROS homeostasis by regulating the antioxidant enzymes and non-enzymatic antioxidants systems. Further evidences reveal that melatonin often interacts with hormones and other signaling molecules, such as ROS, nitric oxide (NO), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and etc. Among these 'new' molecules, crosstalks of melatonin and ROS, especially the H2O2 produced by RBOHs, are provided in fruits and vegetables post-harvest preservation in this review. It will provide reference for complicated integration of both melatonin and ROS as signal molecules in future study.

Abstract
The influence of melatonin treatment on the quality and chilling injury of guavas during storage at 4 ± 1 °C were evaluated. Compared with control group, fruit of guava cv. Xiguahong exposed to various concentrations (50, 100, 150, and 200 μmol/L) of melatonin showed a significantly lower fruit respiration rate, weight loss, cell membrane permeability, and chilling injury index, but a higher commercially acceptable fruit rate, higher peel L*, h° value, and chlorophyll content. Melatonin treatment also delayed the decreases of fruit firmness, sucrose, total soluble sugar, vitamin C, titratable acidity, and total soluble solids. These data indicate that melatonin treatment could increase chilling tolerance and retain quality of cold-stored guavas. Among various concentrations of melatonin treatment, 100 μmol/L melatonin-treated guavas showed the preferable quality properties and lowest chilling injury index. Thus, melatonin may be a novel method of postharvest handling to enhance cold resistance and extend storage-life of cold-stored guava fruit.

Abstract
Citrus pectin was used as a precursor and cellulose nanofibers as a reinforcing agent, a mixed aerogel with enhanced structural properties was prepared. Pickering emulsion was a template for aerogel formation, embedding thymol. Its potential application in humidity regulating packaging has been investigated. Results showed that emulsion gel containing cellulose nanofibers has slightly larger droplet diameter, better viscoelasticity and emulsification. Composite aerogel has larger pore size and thinner pore wall. Additionally, its tensile and compressive properties have been significantly improved. Moisture absorption was close to 100% of its own weight, thymol was released slowly. Compared with Escherichia coli, aerogel has better resistance to Staphylococcus aureus. When applied on fresh Agaricus bisporus. It was found that relative humidity in package can be stabilized at about 97%. Hardness, color, total phenol content, cell membrane integrity and total antioxidant capacity of Agaricus bisporus were maintained and fresh-keeping period was extended to 5 days.

Abstract
Dearth of genomic resources particularly, microsatellite markers in nutritionally and commercially important fruit crop, guava necessitate the development of the novel genomic SSR markers through the library enrichment techniques. Three types of 3' -biotinylated oligonucleotide probes [(CT)14, (GT)12, and (AAC)8] were used to develop microsatellite enriched libraries. A total of 153 transformed colonies were screened of which 111 positive colonies were subjected for Sanger sequencing. The clones having more than five motif repeats were selected for primer designing and a total of 38 novel genomic simple sequence repeats could be identified. The g-SSRs had the motif groups ranging from monomer to pentamer out of which dimer group occurred the most (89.47%). Out of 38 g-SSRs markers developed, 26 were found polymorphic, which showed substantial genetic diversity among the guava genotypes including wild species. The average number of alleles per locus, major allele frequency, gene diversity, expected heterozygosity and polymorphic information content of 26 SSRs were 3.46, 0.56, 0.53, 0.29 and 0.46, respectively. The rate of cross-species transferability of the developed g-SSR loci varied from 38.46 to 80.77% among the studied wild Psidium species. Generation of N-J tree based on 26 SSRs grouped the 40 guava genotypes into six clades with two out-groups, the wild guava species showed genetic distinctness from cultivated genotypes. Furthermore, population structure analysis grouped the guava genotypes into three genetic groups, which were partly supported by PCoA and N-J tree. Further, AMOVA and PCoA deciphered high genetic diversity among the present set of guava genotypes including wild species. Thus, the developed novel g-SSRs were found efficient and informative for diversity and population structure analyses of the guava genotypes. These developed novel g-SSR loci would add to the new genomic resource in guava, which may be utilized in genomic-assisted guava breeding.

Abstract
With the continuous push for improving packaging efficiency of current packaging practices to prevent losses in a real cold chain, a holistic evaluation method with improved indicators and a conceptual assessment framework to improve packaging efficiency continuously in a fresh vegetable cold chain was proposed. Based on two fresh leafy vegetables with typical packaging practices in a real cold chain in China, the evaluation method was performed and tested from a macro perspective, and then the packaging efficiency constitution with loss prevention perspective was better visualized. The results show that the method can be used for improving the performance of specific packaging efficiency in the fresh vegetable cold chain and improving the suggestions’ sustainability orientation, and systematically summarize their impacts on packaging efficiency; specifically as follows: (1) Since the correlation between the state of fresh vegetables and the environmental stress in the package, the performance of the micro-environment parameters should be given priority for packaging efficiency improvement in loss prevention. (2) Although the use of the packaging materials in current practices was relatively better, it still can improve in food safety and packaging sustainability of the packaging practices through the selection of packaging materials with better sustainability characteristics. (3) Via the visualization of targeted packaging efficiency in cold chain, the fluctuation of loss rates in the cold chain process are well perceived, and there are still room can be performed continuously to realize more efficient packaging for better loss prevention. (4) The method has drawbacks that the optimization of the weights to the given indicators and the indicators based on nutrition and quality of fresh produce was not considered in current research, and it should be strengthened in future research. (5) It is necessary that the perception of differences in targeted packaging efficiency and the consciousness to improve specific packaging efficiency in vegetable cold chain for sustainability.
