Abstract
BACKGROUND Suitable nano-pesticide carriers play a crucial role in enhancing the utilization efficiency of pesticides. Among these, mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) are the most promising candidates for large-scale and safe pesticide applications. RESULTS In the present work, functionalized MSNs were demonstrated to be effective mitochondrial-targeted carriers for delivering strobilurin fungicides (mitochondrial respiratory chain inhibitors). MSNs were bi-functionalized with carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC), which is pH-responsive, and (4-carboxybutyl) triphenylphosphonium bromide (TPP), which is mitochondrial targeting. The loading capacity of the model pesticide pyraclostrobin (Py) on the carrier reached 32%. In vitro release experiments of Py demonstrated the sustained release performance of the carriers. Co-localization of the mitochondria and the carrier confirmed that mitochondria targeting by the nanoparticle carrier. Bioactivity assays showed superior antifungal activity of bi-functionalized Py@MSNs-CMC-TPP compared to mono-functionalized MSNs and commercial Py suspension products. Moreover, even when the concentrations of Py@MSNs-CMC and Py commercial suspension were increased by 200% relative to Py@MSNs-CMC-TPP, inhibition remained lower. This indicates that the bi-functionalized carrier reduced the required amount of Py while enhancing its utilization efficiency. CONCLUSION With the large-scale application of mitochondrial-targeted pesticides, such as methoxyacrylates and succinate dehydrogenase inhibitors, functionalized MSNs have significant potential to emerge as promising, environmentally friendly fungicide formulation. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
The controlled release active packaging film represents a novel technology that always can effectively slow down the release of active agents, extending their efficacy. Mucorracemosus Fresenius (MF) mycelium was prepared and used as an adsorption carrier to load clove essential oil (CEO). The CEO/MF complexes were incorporated into the starch/polyvinyl alcohol (Starch/PVA) matrix to develop active films. The effects of MF content on the films' properties were investigated. MF exhibited the internal hollow structure with diaphragm inside and showed antioxidant activity. The adsorption rate of MF on CEO was 238.09 %. As MF increased, the tensile strength, water contact angle and gas barrier properties (water vapor and oxygen) of the films containing CEO enhanced. The release rate of CEO from the films into food simulant (10 % ethanol) slowed down significantly with increasing of MF. Compared to the film without MF, the film with highest MF delayed 33 h to reach equilibrium. The films with different content of MF showed different antioxidant and antibacterial activities, and different preservation effects on shrimp. It showed a great prospect to develop controlled release active films by utilizing MF mycelium as an adsorption material, which enriched the technical solutions for developing controlled release active packaging films.

Abstract
Postharvest fruit decay caused by pathogens is an important factor leading to product waste and economic losses, and fruit coating is considered an effective strategy to solve this problem due to its simple operation and effectiveness. In this study, nano modified chitosan film (CSC) was created by mixing chitosan (CS) and copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) synthesized using abandoned Ficus carica fruit. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra indicated the formation of intermolecular interactions between CS and CuO NPs in the composite film. Compared with CS film, the water vapor permeability (WVP), oxygen permeability (OP) and carbon dioxide permeability (CDP) of CSC film were decreased by 71.78 %, 38.03 % and 43.12 %, respectively, while the opacity, tensile strength (TS) and elongation at break (EB) of CSC film were improved by 8.42, 3.42 and 1.89 times, respectively. The in vitro antifungal activity of CSC film against Alternaria alternata was improved by 78.27 %, compared with CS film. Furthermore, CSC coating significantly delayed the development of tomato fruit diseases during storage, reduced respiration rate, ethylene production and weight loss. After 24 d of storage, the decay index and the weight loss rates of fruits in the CS and CSC groups decreased by 25.00 % and 48.54 %, 35.72 % and 54.08 % compared to the control, respectively. CSC coating effectively maintained the contents of ascorbic acid, titratable acid, soluble sugars, total phenols and flavonoids, while increasing copper content in the peel of tomato fruits. Complete degradation of CSC film in soil was extended by 56 d compared to CS film. To sum up, CSC coating can be a potential choice for extending the shelf life of tomato fruits, improving their edible quality and commercialization, and having better environmental friendliness.

Abstract
Biomass-based composite packaging materials loaded with functional fillers have good application prospects in food preservation and freshness detection. Self-healing hydrogel packaging films based on nanocellulose (CNF), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and ZIF-8 embedded with curcumin (Cur@ZIF-8) were developed in this study. The synthesis of Cur@ZIF-8 was demonstrated by characterization experiments. The addition of Cur@ZIF-8 enhanced the water vapor barrier property, tensile strength, and elongation at break of hydrogel films by 49.2 %, 193.5 %, and 172.9 %, respectively, and endowed them with excellent antimicrobial, antioxidant, and ammonia sensitivity. In packaging tests with fish, hydrogel films loaded with Cur@ZIF-8 inhibited spoilage and microbial growth to extend the shelf life of fish to 9 days, and the color change of hydrogel films allowed for real-time monitoring of fish freshness. This study provided a new solution for smart packaging materials with dual functions of preservation and freshness indication.

Abstract
In this study, we developed active bio-composite films using a sodium alginate/starch (1:1) matrix incorporating date seed extract encapsulated mesoporous silica (DSE@MCM-41) up to 7.5 wt%. Incorporating DSE@MCM-41 significantly improved the films' properties, enhancing antioxidant efficacy and UV-blocking capabilities. Notably, the films exhibited a 29.5 % increase in tensile strength, a 34.81 % decrease in water absorption, and a reduction in water vapor permeability to 1.76 × 10-8 g m-1.h-1.pa-1 at 5 wt% DSE@MCM-41 concentration. These enhancements, coupled with sustained DSE release, effectively extended the shelf life of black grapes by up to 16 days. These results demonstrate the potential of DSE@MCM-41-incorporated bio-composite films to improve food preservation and extend shelf life, making them suitable candidates for advanced food packaging systems.

Abstract
The improper disposal of petroleum-based plastics has been associated with detrimental environmental consequences, such as the proliferation of microplastic pollution and increased emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs). Consequently, biopolymers have emerged as a highly regarded alternative due to their environmental-friendly attributes and versatile range of applications. In response to consumer demands for safer food options, sustainable packaging, and escalating environmental concerns, the food sector is increasingly adopting biopolymers. Further, in the recent decade, the usage of active or functional biopolymers has evolved into smart biopolymers that can transmit real-time data to consumers. This review covers key topics such as antimicrobial and biodegradable packaging, edible coatings and films, incorporation of scavengers and bioactive substances that prolong the shelf life and guard against moisture and microbial contamination. The paper also discusses the development of edible cutlery as a sustainable substitute for plastic, the encapsulation of bioactive substances within biopolymers, 3-D food printing for regulated nutrition delivery and thickening and gelling agents that improve food texture and stability. It also discusses the integration of smart polymer functions, demonstrating their importance in guaranteeing food safety and quality, such as biosensing, pH and gas detection, antibacterial characteristics, and time-temperature monitoring. By shedding light on market trends, future scope, and potentialities, this review aims to elucidate the prospects of utilizing biopolymers to address sustainability and quality concerns within the food industry effectively.

Abstract
Increased mass manufacturing and the pervasive use of plastics in many facets of daily life have had detrimental effects on the environment. As a result, these worries heighten the possibility of climate change due to the carbon dioxide emissions from burning conventional, non-biodegradable polymers. Accordingly, biodegradable gelatin and chitosan polymers are being created as a sustainable substitute for non-biodegradable polymeric materials in various applications. Chitosan is the only naturally occurring cationic alkaline polysaccharide, a well-known edible polymer derived from chitin. The biological activities of chitosan, such as its antioxidant, anticancer, and antimicrobial qualities, have recently piqued the interest of researchers. Similarly, gelatin is a naturally occurring polymer derived from the hydrolytic breakdown of collagen protein and offers various medicinal advantages owing to its unique amino acid composition. In this review, we present an overview of recent studies focusing on applying chitosan and gelatin polymers in various fields. These include using gelatin and chitosan as food packaging, antioxidants and antimicrobial properties, properties encapsulating biologically active substances, tissue engineering, microencapsulation technology, water treatment, and drug delivery. This review emphasizes the significance of investigating sustainable options for non-biodegradable plastics. It showcases the diverse uses of gelatin and chitosan polymers in tackling environmental issues and driving progress across different industries.

Abstract
Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) endowed with polymer coatings present a versatile platform, offering notable advantages such as targeted, pH-controlled, and stimuli-responsive drug delivery. Surface functionalization, particularly through amine and carboxyl modification, enhances their suitability for polymerization, thereby augmenting their versatility and applicability. This review delves into the diverse therapeutic realms benefiting from polymer-coated MSNs, including photodynamic therapy (PDT), photothermal therapy (PTT), chemotherapy, RNA delivery, wound healing, tissue engineering, food packaging, and neurodegenerative disorder treatment. The multifaceted potential of polymer-coated MSNs underscores their significance as a focal point for future research endeavors and clinical applications. A comprehensive analysis of various polymers and biopolymers, such as polydopamine, chitosan, polyethylene glycol, polycaprolactone, alginate, gelatin, albumin, and others, is conducted to elucidate their advantages, benefits, and utilization across biomedical disciplines. Furthermore, this review extends its scope beyond polymerization and biomedical applications to encompass topics such as surface functionalization, chemical modification of MSNs, recent patents in the MSN domain, and the toxicity associated with MSN polymerization. Additionally, a brief discourse on green polymers is also included in review, highlighting their potential for fostering a sustainable future.

Abstract
Background: Environmental concerns about petroleum-based plastic packaging materials and the growing demand for food have inspired researchers and the food industry to develop food packaging with better food preservation and biodegradability. Nanocomposites consisting of nanofillers, and synthetic/biopolymers can be applied to improve the physiochemical and antimicrobial properties and sustainability of food packaging. Scope and approach: This review summarized the recent advances in nanofiller and their applications in improved food packaging systems (e.g., nanoclay, carbon nanotubes), active food packaging (e.g., silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs), zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs)), intelligent food packaging, and degradable packaging (e.g., titanium dioxide nanoparticles (e.g., TiO2 NPs)). Additionally, the migration processes and related assessment methods for nanofillers were considered, as well as the use of nanofillers to reduce migration. The potential cytotoxicity and ecotoxicity of nanofillers were also reviewed. Key findings: The incorporation of nanofillers may increase Young's modulus (YM) while decreasing the elongation at break (EAB) (y = -1.55x + 1.38, R2 = 0.128, r = -0.358, p = 0.018) and decreasing the water vapor (WVP) and oxygen permeability (OP) (y = 0.30x - 0.57, R2 = 0.039, r = 0.197, p = 0.065). Meanwhile, the addition of metal-based NPs could also extend the shelf-life of food products by lowering lipid oxidation by an average of approx. 350.74% and weight loss by approx. 28.39% during the longest storage period, and significantly increasing antibacterial efficacy against S. aureus compared to the neat polymer films (p = 0.034). Moreover, the migration process of nanofillers may be negligible but still requires further research. Additionally, the ecotoxicity of nanofillers is unclear, as the final distribution of nanocomposites in the environment is unknown. Conclusions: Nanotechnology helps to overcome the challenges associated with traditional packaging materials. Strong regulatory frameworks and safety standards are needed to ensure the appropriate use of nanocomposites. There is also a need to explore how to realize the economic and technical requirements for large-scale implementation of nanocomposite technologies.

Abstract
In order to obtain innovative, high-quality biodegradable packaging, double-layer films based on furcellaran and gelatin, enriched with plant extracts were created. The films were assessed considering their potential utility, applications and environmental impact. The mechanical properties over a period of nine months were studied and it was noted that the passing of time had a beneficial effect on these parameters. The antioxidant properties was also examined, with the highest results obtained using the DPPH and metal chelating activity methods for GE (76.64 % and 9.85 % respectively), while this film showed the lowest FRAP value (5.99 %) compared to the highest obtained for DTE (52.62 %). For the first time, the possibility of using the double-layer active FUR/GEL film as packaging for salad-dressing was evaluated, but no improvement in parameters was observed regardless of the extract used. The environmental impact analysis showed the ability to completely decomposed in vermicompost within several days.

Abstract
Essential oils (EOs) are biologically active and volatile substances that have found widespread applications in the food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical industries. However, there are some challenges to their commercial utilization due to their high volatility, susceptibility to degradation, and hydrophobicity. In their free form, EOs can quickly evaporate, as well as undergo degradation reactions like oxidation, isomerization, dehydrogenation, or polymerization when exposed to light, heat, or air. Encapsulating EOs within mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNPs) could overcome these limitations and thereby broaden their usage. MSNPs may endow protection and slow-release properties to EOs, thereby extending their stability, enhancing their efficacy, and improving their dispersion in aqueous environments. This review explores and compares the design and development of different MSNP-based nanoplatforms to encapsulate, protect, and release EOs. Initially, a brief overview of the various types of available MSNPs, their properties, and their synthesis methods is given to better understand their roles as carriers for EOs. Several encapsulation technologies are then examined, including solvent-based and solvent-free methods. The suitability of each technology for EO encapsulation, as well as its impact on their stability and release, is discussed in detail. Opportunities and challenges for using EO-loaded MSNPs as preservatives, flavor enhancers, and antimicrobial agents in the food industry are then highlighted. Overall, this review aims to bridge a knowledge gap by providing a thorough understanding of EO encapsulation within MSNPs, which should facilitate the application of this technology in the food industry.

Abstract
Active packaging has been recognized as an effective approach to extend the shelf life of food, but the rapid release of active substances limits the preservation effect. In this study, gallic acid (GA)-loaded ovalbumin (OVA)/chitosan (CS) nanoparticles with slow-release properties were prepared and embedded into the pectin matrix to refine the rapid release of GA in the pectin and elongate the shelf life of salmon fillets. Our results showed that GA could be released continuously from the OVA/CS nanoparticles. The pectin film incorporated with GA-loaded OVA/CS nanoparticles exhibited good light barrier and mechanical properties. The opacity value of the film reached 1.65 ± 0.06 UA/mm, and the tensile strength and elongation at break were 15.97 ± 1.55 MPa and 7.29 ± 0.42 %, respectively. In addition, the pectin film combined with GA-loaded OVA/CS nanoparticles showed improved antibacterial activity against two common biogenic amine-producing bacteria (Morganella morganii and Escherichia coli). Moreover, the nanocomposite film delayed salmon fillets' biogenic amine generation, and the shelf life was extended by 3 days compared with the control group. These promising properties supported using the GA-loaded OVA/CS nanoparticle-pectin films as preservation materials for fish.

Abstract
Silver nanoparticles incorporation into polymeric packaging aims to prevent microbiological contamination in food products, thus ensuring superior food safety and preservation. In this context, this study aimed to verify the antimicrobial efficacy of linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) films incorporated with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) dispersed in silica (SiO2) and hydroxyapatite (HAP) carriers at different concentrations. AgNPs + carriers polymer films were characterized at 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6% concentrations using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission gun-scanning electron microscope (FEG-SEM), thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and migration in acidic and non-acidic simulants. Antimicrobial action was investigated on Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus, Gram-negative Escherichia coli, and the Penicillium expansum and Fusarium solani fungi with antimicrobial activity by direct contact test and bacterial imaging by scanning electron microscopy. AgNPs addition to the LLDPE matrix did not interfere with the films' chemical and thermal properties and presented no significant migration to the external medium. For antimicrobial action, silver nanoparticles showed, in most concentrations, an inhibition percentage higher than 90% on all microorganisms studied, regardless of the carrier. However, a greater inhibitory action on S. aureus and between carriers was found, making hydroxyapatite more effective. The results indicated that nanostructured films with AgNPs + hydroxyapatite showed more promising antimicrobial action on microorganisms than AgNPs + silica, making hydroxyapatite with silver nanoparticle potentially useful in food packaging, improving safety and maintaining quality.

Abstract
Rapid decrease in antibacterial efficacy of existing active packages is difficult to promisingly prevent microbial infection during the storage of perishable products. Here, we pioneered an advanced ZnO-doped hollow carbon-encapsulated curcumin (ZHC-Cur)-chitosan (CS) slow-release film (ZHC-Cur-CS) with "nano-barricade" structure through demand-oriented tailoring of the structure and components of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) carrier. Such an exquisite structure realized the effective sustained release of Curcumin through the dual complexity of diffusion pathway by the disordered hierarchical pore structure and steric hindrance. Prepared ZHC-Cur-CS film exhibited boosting bactericidal and antioxidant abilities by virtue of the functional synergy between curcumin and ZnO. Thus, ZHC-Cur-CS film demonstrated excellent preservation performance by significantly prolonging the shelf life of Citrus (∼2.4 times). Furthermore, the upgraded mechanical strength, improved barrier ability, and proven safety laid the foundation for its practical application. These satisfactory properties underscore the applicability of ZHC-Cur-CS film for the efficient preservation of perishable products.

Abstract
Unmet medical needs in treating critical-size bone defects have led to the development of numerous innovative bone tissue engineering implants. Although additive manufacturing allows flexible patient-specific treatments by modifying topological properties with various materials, the development of ideal bone implants that aid new tissue regeneration and reduce post-implantation bone disorders has been limited. Natural biomolecules are gaining the attention of the health industry due to their excellent safety profiles, providing equivalent or superior performances when compared to more expensive growth factors and synthetic drugs. Supplementing additive manufacturing with natural biomolecules enables the design of novel multifunctional bone implants that provide controlled biochemical delivery for bone tissue engineering applications. Controlled release of naturally derived biomolecules from a three-dimensional (3D) printed implant may improve implant-host tissue integration, new bone formation, bone healing, and blood vessel growth. The present review introduces us to the current progress and limitations of 3D printed bone implants with drug delivery capabilities, followed by an in-depth discussion on cutting-edge technologies for incorporating natural medicinal compounds embedded within the 3D printed scaffolds or on implant surfaces, highlighting their applications in several pre- and post-implantation bone-related disorders.

Abstract
Along with the growth of the world's population that reduces the accessibility of arable land and water, demand for food, as the fundamental element of human beings, has been continuously increasing each day. This situation not only becomes a challenge for the modern food chain systems but also affects food availability throughout the world. Edible coating is expected to play a significant role in food preservation and packaging, where this technique can reduce the number of food loss and subsequently ensure more sustainable food and agriculture production through various mechanisms. This review provides comprehensive information related to the currently available advanced technologies of coating applications, which include advanced methods (i.e., nanoscale and multilayer coating methods) and advanced properties (i.e., active, self-healing, and super hydrophobic coating properties). Furthermore, the benefits and drawbacks of those technologies during their applications on foods are also discussed. For further research, opportunities are foreseen to develop robust edible coating methods by combining multiple advanced technologies for large-scale and more sustainable industrial production.

Abstract
In food packaging, biopolymer films are biodegradable films made from biomacromolecule-based natural materials, while biocomposite films are hybrids of two or more materials, with at least one being biodegradable. Bionanocomposites are different than the earlier ones, as they consist of various nanofillers (both natural and inorganic) in combination with biomacromolecule-based biodegradable materials to make good compostable bionanocomposites. In this regard, a new type of material known as bionanocomposite has been recently introduced to improve the properties and performance of biocomposite films. Bionanocomposites are primarily developed for active packaging, but their use in intelligent packaging is also noteworthy. For example, bionanocomposites developed using a hybrid of anthocyanin and carbon dots as intelligent materials have shown their high pH-sensing properties. The natural nanofillers (like nanocellulose, nanochitosan, nanoliposome, cellulose nanocrystals, cellulose nanofibers, etc.) are being employed to promote the sustainability, degradability and safety of bionanocomposites. Overall, this article comprehensively reviews the latest innovations in bionanocomposite films for intelligent food packaging over the past five years. In addition to packaging aspects, the role of nanofillers, the importance of life cycle assessment (LCA) and risk assessment, associated challenges, and future perspectives of bionanocomposite intelligent films are also discussed.

Abstract
The food packaging industries are facing the challenge of food waste generation. This can be addressed through the use of edible coating materials. These coatings aid in extending the shelf life of food products, reducing waste. The key components of these coatings include food-grade binding agents, solvents, and fillers. The integration of polysaccharide, protein, lipids, bioactive and composite-based materials with edible coating matrix aids to combat substantial post-harvest loss of highly perishable commodities and elevates the quality of minimally processed food. The aim of this review is to introduce the concept of edible coatings and discuss the different coating materials used in the food industry, along with their properties. Additionally, this review aims to classify the coating types based on characteristic features and explore their application in various food processing industries. This review provides a comprehensive overview of edible coatings, including the integration of polysaccharides, proteins, lipids, bioactive, and composite-based materials into the coating matrix. This review also addresses the significant post-harvest loss of highly perishable commodities and emphasizes the enhancement of quality in minimally processed food. Furthermore, the antimicrobial, anti-corrosive, and edible characteristics are highlighted, showcasing their potential applications in different food packaging industries. Moreover, it also discusses the challenges, safety and regulatory aspects, current trends, and future perspectives, aiming to shed light on the commercialization and future investigation of edible coatings.

Abstract
Selenium is a trace element required for the active function of numerous enzymes and various physiological processes. In recent years, selenium nanoparticles draw the attention of scientists and researchers because of its multifaceted uses. The process involved in chemically synthesized SeNPs has been found to be hazardous in nature, which has paved the way for safe and ecofriendly SeNPs to be developed in order to achieve sustainability. In comparison to chemical synthesis, SeNPs can be synthesized more safely and with greater flexibility utilizing bacteria, fungi, and plants. This review focused on the synthesis of SeNPs utilizing bacteria, fungi, and plants; the mechanisms involved in SeNP synthesis; and the effect of various abiotic factors on SeNP synthesis and morphological characteristics. This article discusses the synergies of SeNP synthesis via biological routes, which can help future researchers to synthesize SeNPs with more precision and employ them in desired fields.

Abstract
Although food packaging preserves food's quality, it unfortunately contributes to global climate change since the considerable carbon emissions associated with its entire life cycle. Polysaccharide-based packaging materials (PPMs) are promising options to preserve foods, potentially helping the food industry reduce its carbon footprint. PPMs incorporated with phytochemicals hold promise to address this critical issue, keep food fresh and prolong the shelf life. However, phytochemicals' health benefits are impacted by their distinct chemical structures thus the phytochemicals-incorporated PPMs generally exhibit differential performances. PPMs must be thoughtfully formulated to possess adequate physicochemical properties to meet commercial standards. Given this, this review first-time provides a comprehensive review of recent advances in the fabrication of phytochemicals incorporated PPMs. The application performances of phytochemicals-incorporated PPMs for preserving foods, as well as the intelligent monitoring of food quality, are thoroughly introduced. The possible associated environmental impacts and scalability challenges for the commercial application of these PPMs are also methodically assessed. This review seeks to provide comprehensive insights into exploring new avenues to achieve a greener and safer food industry via innovative food packaging materials. This is paramount to preserve not only food shelf life but also the environment, facilitating the eco-friendly development of the food industry.

Abstract
Non-biodegradability and disposal problems are the major challenges associated with synthetic plastic packaging. This review article discusses a new generation of biodegradable active and smart packaging based on porous nanomaterials (PNMs), which maintains the quality and freshness of food products while meeting biodegradability requirements. PNMs have recently gained significant attention in the field of food packaging due to their large surface area, peculiar structures, functional flexibility, and thermal stability. We present for the first time the recently published literature on the incorporation of various PNMs into renewable materials to develop advanced, environmentally friendly, and high-quality packaging technology. Various emerging packaging technologies are discussed in this review, along with their advantages and disadvantages. Moreover, it provides general information about PNMs, their characterization, and fabrication methods. It also briefly describes the effects of different PNMs on the functionality of biopolymeric films. Furthermore, we examined how smart packaging loaded with PNMs can improve food shelf life and reduce food waste. The results indicate that PNMs play a critical role in improving the antimicrobial, thermal, physicochemical, and mechanical properties of natural packaging materials. These tailor-made materials can simultaneously extend the shelf life of food while reducing plastic usage and food waste.

Abstract
Nisin, a natural substance from Lactococcus lactis, displays a promising antibacterial ability against the gram-positive bacteria. However, it is susceptible to the external environment, i.e. temperature, pH, and food composition. In this study, a dual stabilization method, coaxial electrospinning, was applied to protect nisin in food packaging materials and the effect of nisin concentration on the properties of the nanofibers was investigated. The core-shell nanofibers with pullulan as a core layer and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS)/polyethylene oxide (PEO) as shell layer were prepared, and then the prepared CMCS-nisin nanogels (CNNGs) using a self-assembly method were loaded into the core layer of the nanofibers as antibacterial agents. The result revealed that the smooth surface can be observed on the nanofibers by microstructure characterization. The CNNGs-loaded nanofibers exhibited enhanced thermal stability and mechanical strength, as well as excellent antibacterial activity. Importantly, the as-formed nanofibers were applied to preserve bass fish and found that the shelf life of bass fish packed by CNNGSs with nisin at a concentration of 8 mg/mL was effectively extended from 9 days to 15 days. Taken together, the CNNGs can be well stabilized with the core-shell nanofibers, thus exerting significantly improved antimicrobial stability and bioactivity. This special structure exerts a great potential for application as food packaging materials to preserve aquatic products.

Abstract
The problem of environmental plastic contamination is one of the most serious issues facing our world today. The majority of the packaging materials used to preserve food are made of plastic which is considered an environmental issue. Natural kaolinite clay (KC) and Ficus leaf extract (FLE) were combined with chitosan in this work to create a novel antioxidant and biodegradable food packaging film. Chitosan/KC/FLE film was compared to chitosan film, Chitosan/KC, and Chitosan/FLE films in terms of structural, physical, and functional aspects. The addition of FLE and/or KC significantly improved the light and moisture barrier characteristics, mechanical properties, and antioxidant capabilities of chitosan film. Moreover, KC addition had a remarkable impact on the water vapor permeability and the biodegradability of the chitosan film. Because of the synergistic action of FLE and KC, the Chitosan/KC/FLE film delivered strong barrier and antioxidant capabilities. Furthermore, Chitosan/KC/FLE film was tested as packaging material on fresh-cut apple slices and demonstrated good food preservation regarding the weight loss, browning index, and total phenolic content of the fruit. According to our findings, Chitosan/KC/FLE film might be employed as a possible food packaging material in the food industry.

Abstract
Chitosan (CS) is an excellent raw material for the preparation of food packaging films due to its good film-forming properties, non-toxicity, and biodegradability. However, pure chitosan films have drawbacks such as weak mechanical properties and limited antimicrobial activity. In this work, novel food packaging films containing chitosan, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and porous graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) were successfully prepared. The PVA served to improve the mechanical properties of the chitosan-based films, whilst the porous g-C3N4 acted as a photocatalytically-active antibacterial agent. The tensile strength (TS) and elongation at break (EAB) of the g-C3N4/CS/PVA films both increased by ~4 times compared to the pristine CS/PVA films at the optimum g-C3N4 loading of ~10 wt%. The addition of g-C3N4 increase the water contact angle (WCA) of the films from 38° to 50°, whilst decreasing the water vapor permeability (WVP) from 160 × 10-12 to 135 × 10-12 g∙Pa-1 s-1 m-1. The shelf life of strawberries covered with g-C3N4/CS/PVA films at room temperature could be extended up to 96 h, compared to 48 h and 72 h for strawberries covered with polyethylene (PE) films or CS/PVA films, respectively. The g-C3N4/CS/PVA films offered good antibacterial properties against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Further, the composite films could be easily recycled with the regenerated films offering almost identical mechanical properties and activities as the original films. The prepared g-C3N4/CS/PVA films thus offer promise for low-cost antimicrobial packaging applications.

Abstract
Fruit peels are rich source of bioactive compounds such as polyphenols, flavonoids, and antioxidants but are often discarded as waste due to limited pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications. This study aimed to valorise pomegranate and citrus fruit peel into green synthesised silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in order to modify cellulose-based wrapping material for prospective food packaging applications and propose an alternate and sustainable approach to replace polyethene based food packaging material. Four different concentrations of AgNO3 (0.5 mM, 1 mM, 2 mM, and 3 mM) were used for green synthesis of AgNPs from fruit peel bioactive, which were characterised followed by phytochemical analysis. Ultraviolet-Visible spectroscopy showed surface plasmon resonance at 420 nm, XRD analysis showed 2θ peak at 27.8°, 32.16°, 38.5°, 44.31°, 46.09°, 54.76°, 57.47°, 64.61° and 77.50° corresponding to (210), (122), (111), (200), (231), (142), (241), (220) and (311) plane of face centred cubic crystal structure of AgNPs. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analysis of AgNPs green synthesised from pomegranate and kinnow peel extract showed a major peak at 3277, 1640 and 1250-1020 1/cm while a small peak at 2786 1/cm was observed in case of pomegranate peel extract which was negligible in AgNPs synthesized from kinnow peel extract. Particle sizes of AgNPs showed no statistically significant variance with p > 0.10 and thus, 2 mM was chosen for further experimentation and modification of cellulose based packaging material as it showed smallest average particle size. Zeta potential was observed to be nearly neutral with a partial negative strength due to presence of various phenolic compounds such as presence of gallic acid which was confirmed by ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography-photodiode array(UHPLC-PDA) detector. Thermal stability analysis of green synthesised AgNPs qualified the sterilisation conditions up to 100 °C. AgNPs green synthesized from both the peel extracts had higher polyphenolic content, antioxidant and radical scavenging activity as compared to peel extracts without treatment (p < 0.05). The cellulose based food grade packaging material was enrobed by green synthesised AgNPs. The characterisation of modified cellulose wrappers showed no significant difference in thickness of modified cellulose wrappers as compared with untreated cellulose wrapper (p > 0.42) while weight and grammage increased significantly in modified cellulose wrapper (p < 0.05). The colour values on CIE scale (L*, a* and b*) showed statistically significant increase in yellow and green colour (p < 0.05) for modified cellulose wrappers as compared to control wrapper. The oxygen permeability coefficient, water vapour permeability coefficient, water absorption capacity and water behaviour characteristics (water content, swelling degree and solubility) showed significant decrease (p < 0.05) for modified cellulose wrapper as compared to control wrapper. A uniform distribution and density of green synthesised AgNPs across cellulose wrapper matrix was observed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images with no significant aggregation, confirming successful enrobing and stable immobilisation of nanoparticles from cellulose matrix. A seven-day storage study of bread wrapped in modified and control cellulose wrappers showed delayed occurrence of microbial, yeast and mould count in bread packaged in modified cellulose wrappers and thus, resulting in shelf life extension of bread. The results are encouraging for the potential applications of modified cellulose wrappers to replace polyethene based food packaging.

Abstract
A natural biopolymer bilayer film based on chitosan and bacterial cellulose with a protective layer of pullulan was developed by a two-step solution casting method. Curcumin was incorporated as an active antioxidant and antibacterial agent into the inner layer. The films with different curcumin concentrations were systematically characterized. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analyses showed high compatibility between curcumin and the polysaccharide matrix through intermolecular interactions, which was verified by enhanced mechanical and barrier properties. The curcumin incorporation improved the thermal stability by >35.4 %, along with lower visible and ultraviolet light transmittance (< 8.6 %) and water solubility (< 25.1 %). The film had both antibacterial and antioxidant properties, and the sustained release of curcumin was largest (> 58.8 %) in the fatty food simulant lasting for over 155 h. The results suggested that the film containing 0.2 % curcumin had ideal physical and functional properties, suggesting its potential as a novel packaging material for the preservation of high-fat food.

Abstract
Objective To improve the bioavailability of active substances and reduce the toxic and side effects on the human body, natural biological macromolecules are used to load active substances and control their release speed in different environments of the human body. In this study, mesoporous silica (MSN) was combined with konjac glucomannan (KGM) and sodium alginate (AC) to prepare pH-sensitive konjac glucomannan/sodium alginate-mesoporous silica loaded naringin gel spheres (KS/MSN). On this basis, the structure, morphology, and release properties of the composite gel spheres were characterized. The results showed that the cumulative release rates of both simulated gastric fluid (SGF) and Simulated colonic fluid (SCF) were lower than that of simulated small intestinal fluid (SIF), which indicated that the prepared composite gel spheres were pH-sensitive to SIF and obtained the best release rate of about 70% under SIF environment. Methods The pH-sensitive konjac glucomannan/sodium alginate composite gel spheres (KGM/SA) were prepared by combining inorganic nano-materials mesoporous silica (MSN) with natural macromolecular polysaccharides konjac glucomannan (KGM) and sodium alginate (SA) and characterized. Results The results showed that there was a process of ionic crosslinking and entanglement between konjac glucomannan (KGM) and sodium alginate (SA). Naringin (NG) and mesoporous silica (MSN) were successfully compounded and had good compatibility. The gel microstructure diagram showed that the addition of MSN improved the gel properties of KGM, and KGM and SA gel spheres (KGM/SA) had good compatibility with mesoporous silica/naringenin nanoparticles (NG/MSN). The study of the simulated digestive environment of the gastrointestinal release medium showed that Konjac glucomannan/sodium alginate-mesoporous silica loaded naringin gel spheres (KS/NM) composite gel spheres had the best slow-release effect and the highest final-release completion degree in SIF. The release of NG from KS/NM composite gel spheres showed a slow upward trend. The results showed that KS/NM composite gel spheres were pH-sensitive. Conclusion The KS/NM composite gel spheres showed obvious pH sensitivity to the release of NG, and the gel spheres had a good sustained release effect on NG.

Abstract
Staphylococcus aureus is a versatile pathogen known to cause hospital- and community-acquired, foodborne, and zoonotic infections. The clinical infections by S. aureus cause an increase in morbidity and mortality rates and treatment costs, aggravated by the emergence of drug-resistant strains. As a multi-faceted pathogen, it is imperative to consolidate the knowledge on its pathogenesis, including the mechanisms of virulence regulation, development of antimicrobial resistance, and biofilm formation, to make it amenable to different treatment strategies. Nanomaterials provide a suitable platform to address this challenge, with the potential to control intracellular parasitism and multidrug resistance where conventional therapies show limited efficacy. In a nutshell, the first part of this review focuses on the impact of S. aureus on human health and the role of virulence factors and biofilms during pathogenesis. The second part discusses the large diversity of nanoparticles and their applications in controlling S. aureus infections, including combination with antibiotics and phytochemicals and the incorporation of antimicrobial coatings for biomaterials. Finally, the limitations and prospects using nanomaterials are highlighted, aiming to foster the development of novel nanotechnology-driven therapies against multidrug-resistant S. aureus.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the world's leading cause of dementia and has become a huge economic burden on nations and families. However, the exact etiology of AD is still unknown, and there are no efficient medicines or methods to prevent the deterioration of cognition. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has made important contributions in the battle against AD based on the characteristics of multiple targets of TCM. This study reviewed the treatment strategies and new discoveries of traditional Chinese medicine in current research, which may be beneficial to new drug researchers.

Abstract
The 3-(Methylthio) propyl isothiocyanate (MTPITC)-loaded inclusion complex prepared by α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) was incorporated into chitosan (CS) film to fabricate a packaging material for fresh chicken meat preservation. Scanning electron microscope images indicated homogenous dispersion of the MTPITC-α-CD in CS polymer. Fourier-transform infrared and X-ray diffraction techniques revealed that MTPITC-α-CD was incorporated into the CS film matrix by the physical interactions. The introduction of MTPITC-α-CD improved the UV-vis light-blocking ability, with a slight loss of transparency. Although the water solubility and water vapor barrier capacity were not significantly influenced by the addition of MTPITC-α-CD, the antioxidant attribute was significantly enhanced. The CS-MTPITC-α-CD film displayed obvious and sustained suppressive effects against Salmonella typhimurium, with the inhibition zone diameters of 14.7 mm at 12 h and 7.3 mm at 24 h, respectively. Moreover, the quality index analysis indicated that the CS-MTPITC-α-CD film-wrapped fresh chicken, during refrigerated storage, exhibited better preservative efficacy than the control groups, with the total viable counts of 6.5 Log CFU/g, total volatile base nitrogen of 8.4 mg/100 g, pH of 6.6, thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances of 0.2 mg/kg, and the sensory score of 5 at day 16. Collectively, these results suggest that CS-MTPITC-α-CD film is a prospective packaging candidate for delaying the quality deterioration of chicken meat.

Abstract
Slow release active packaging films can realize the sustained release of active agents and prolong the shelf life of food. For this aim, a novel slow release active polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film was developed by using solution casting method. With porous starch loaded with tea polyphenols (PSTP) as core material and maltodextrin (MD) as wall material, PSTP@MD microcapsules were prepared using freeze drying method and used as slow release carrier of tea polyphenols (TP) in the active films. The interactions between PSTP@MD microcapsules and PVA molecular chains were physical interactions. In addition, the relative crystallinity of the slow release active films was reduced to 23.74 %. The addition of PSTP@MD microcapsules can enhance the ductility of active films and reduce the water content and swelling degree of active films by 46.74 % and 54.38 %, respectively. Moreover, the thermal stability, water vapor and ultraviolet barrier properties of active films were promoted. The transparency and antioxidant activity of active films was high, and the radical scavenging activity of active films was 58 %. The encapsulation of TP with PSTP@MD microcapsules can realize the slow release of TP. The slow release active films had antioxidant activity and sustained release properties, which could be used as an active packaging film to extend the shelf life of food.

Abstract
Curcumin has multiple properties that are used to cure different diseases such as cancer, infections, inflammatory, arthritic disease, etc. Despite having many effects, the inherent physicochemical properties-such as poor water solubility, chemical instability, low bioavailability, photodegradation, fast metabolism, and short half-life-of curcumin's derivatives have limited its medical importance. Recently, unprecedented advances in biomedical nanotechnology have led to the development of nanomaterial-based drug delivery systems in the treatment of diseases and diagnostic goals that simultaneously enhance therapeutic outcomes and avoid side effects. Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) are promising drug delivery systems for more effective and safer treatment of several diseases, such as infections, cancers, and osteoporosis. Achieving a high drug loading in MSNs is critical to the success of this type of treatment. Their notable inherent properties-such as adjustable size and porosity, high pore volume, large surface area, functionality of versatile surfaces, as well as biocompatibility-have prompted extraordinary research on MSNs as multi-purpose delivery platforms. In this review, we focused on curcumin-loaded silica nanoparticles and their effects on the diagnosis and treatment of infections as well as their use in food packaging.

Abstract
To improve the performance of potato starch films and solve the problems of high volatility and low stability of thymol (Thy), thymol was loaded into the channel of SBA-15 to prepare Thy-SBA-15, and the Thy-SBA-15/potato starch film was prepared. The results showed thymol was successfully loaded into the pores of SBA-15. The addition of Thy-SBA-15 enhanced the tensile strength of potato starch film (3.93 Mpa), reduced the water vapor permeability (1.56 × 10-12 g·d-1 m-1 Pa-1 , WVP) and moisture absorption (80.97%, MA), which enhanced the barrier properties of the films. Thy-SBA-15 had good compatibility with potato starch films. Notably, the thymol released from Thy-SBA-15/potato starch film was initially explosive, and then continuous, which showed this film could effectively slow down the release rate of thymol and prolong the fresh-keeping period of food. The Korsmeyer-Peppas model M t M ∞ = k t n $$ \left(\frac{{\mathrm{M}}_{\mathrm{t}}}{{\mathrm{M}}_{\infty }}=\mathrm{k}{\mathrm{t}}^{\mathrm{n}}\right) $$ (R2 > .96) had the best fit for the release curve of thymol. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: This work offers a new method for the preparation of potato starch sustained-release antibacterial film, and provides a theoretical basis and technical support for the development of intelligent packaging.

Abstract
Inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) and natural antioxidant compounds are an emerging trend in the food industry. Incorporating these substances in biobased and biodegradable matrices as polysaccharides (e.g., starch, cellulose, and chitosan) and proteins has highlighted the potential in active food packaging applications due to more significant antimicrobial, antioxidant, UV blocking, oxygen scavenging, water vapor permeability effects, and low environmental impact. In recent years, the migration of metal NPs and metal oxides in food contact packaging and their toxicological potential have raised concerns about the safety of the nanomaterials. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the main biobased and biodegradable polymer nanocomposites, inorganic NPs, natural antioxidants, and their potential use in active food packaging. The intrinsic properties of NPs and natural antioxidant actives in packaging materials are evaluated to extend shelf-life, safety, and food quality. Toxicological and safety aspects of inorganic NPs are highlighted to understand the current controversy on applying some nanomaterials in food packaging. The synergism of inorganic NPs and plant-derived natural antioxidant actives (e.g., vitamins, polyphenols, and carotenoids) and essential oils (EOs) potentiated the antibacterial and antioxidant properties of biodegradable nanocomposite films. Biodegradable packaging films based on green NPs-this is biosynthesized from plant extracts-showed suitable mechanical and barrier properties and had a lower environmental impact and offered efficient food protection. Furthermore, AgNPs and TiO2 NPs released metal ions from packaging into contents insufficiently to cause harm to human cells, which could be helpful to understanding critical gaps and provide progress in the packaging field.

Abstract
The composite films were prepared by adding rice protein hydrolysate (RH) into chitosan (CH). Effect of four different chitosan molecular weights (MW, 0.8- 1.0, 30, 100, 300 kDa) was evaluated and curcumin was further incorporated into the film to enhance its bioactivities. With increasing MW (<100 kDa), moisture, solubility and water vapor transmission marginally decreased while tensile strength increased. Rice hydrolysate improved the film solubility and extensibility. All films showed extraordinary extensibility ranging from 180.26% to 204.08%. DSC confirmed MW did affect the thermal stability. The lower MW, the higher antioxidant activity of the CH/RH films. The 30 kDa CH/RH film exhibited higher antibacterial activity against both E. coli and S. aureus. Curcumin effectively improved both antibacterial and antioxidant activity of the CH/RH films. Hence, chitosan molecular weight must be chosen carefully according to its application and incorporation of protein hydrolysate into film would be an efficient strategy to modify film performance.

Abstract
Food packaging plays a key role in offering safe and quality food products to consumers by providing protection and extending shelf life. Food packaging is a multifaceted field based on food science and engineering, microbiology, and chemistry, all of which have contributed significantly to maintaining physicochemical attributes such as color, flavor, moisture content, and texture of foods and their raw materials, in addition to ensuring freedom from oxidation and microbial deterioration. Antimicrobial food packaging systems, in addition to their function as conventional food packaging, are designed to arrest microbial growth on food surfaces, thereby enhancing food stability and quality. Nanomaterials with unique physiochemical and antibacterial properties are widely explored in food packaging as preservatives and antimicrobials, to extend the shelf life of packed food products. Various nanomaterials that are used in food packaging include nanocomposites composing nanoparticles such as silver, copper, gold, titanium dioxide, magnesium oxide, zinc oxide, mesoporous silica and graphene-based inorganic nanoparticles; gelatin; alginate; cellulose; chitosan-based polymeric nanoparticles; lipid nanoparticles; nanoemulsion; nanoliposomes; nanosponges; and nanofibers. Antimicrobial nanomaterial-based packaging systems are fabricated to exhibit greater efficiency against microbial contaminants. Recently, smart food packaging systems indicating the presence of spoilage and pathogenic microorganisms have been investigated by various research groups. The present review summarizes recent updates on various nanomaterials used in the field of food packaging technology, with potential applications as antimicrobial, antioxidant equipped with technology conferring smart functions and mechanisms in food packaging.

Abstract
Curcumin is a bioactive compound that is extracted from Curcuma longa and that is known for its antimicrobial properties. Curcuminoids are the main constituents of curcumin that exhibit antioxidant properties. It has a broad spectrum of antibacterial actions against a wide range of bacteria, even those resistant to antibiotics. Curcumin has been shown to be effective against the microorganisms that are responsible for surgical infections and implant-related bone infections, primarily Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The efficacy of curcumin against Helicobacter pylori and Mycobacterium tuberculosis, alone or in combination with other classic antibiotics, is one of its most promising antibacterial effects. Curcumin is known to have antifungal action against numerous fungi that are responsible for a variety of infections, including dermatophytosis. Candidemia and candidiasis caused by Candida species have also been reported to be treated using curcumin. Life-threatening diseases and infections caused by viruses can be counteracted by curcumin, recognizing its antiviral potential. In combination therapy with other phytochemicals, curcumin shows synergistic effects, and this approach appears to be suitable for the eradication of antibiotic-resistant microbes and promising for achieving co-loaded antimicrobial pro-regenerative coatings for orthopedic implant biomaterials. Poor water solubility, low bioavailability, and rapid degradation are the main disadvantages of curcumin. The use of nanotechnologies for the delivery of curcumin could increase the prospects for its clinical application, mainly in orthopedics and other surgical scenarios. Curcumin-loaded nanoparticles revealed antimicrobial properties against S. aureus in periprosthetic joint infections.

Abstract
Successful modification of chitosan (CS) film using magnetic-silica nanocomposite to encapsulate turmeric essential oil (TEO) obtained by super critical CO2 extraction for enhanced preservation of surimi was performed. TEO exhibited antioxidant and antibacterial activities against Bacillus cereus. The core magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were capped with porous silica (Si) to form core-shell nanocomposites, into which TEO was loaded with 75.24% encapsulation efficiency. The fabricated nanocomposite was characterized, blended with CS to cast a bionanocomposite active film and characterized for efficient impregnation of bionanocomposite. The physical and mechanical properties of film were significantly improved after adding MNPs/Si/TEO nanocomposite. Uncontrolled release of TEO from CS film resulted in bacterial growth after 6 days of storage whereas bionanocomposites exhibited a sustained release of TEO that controlled the microbial load from 4.0 log CFU/g to 2.78 log CFU/g over 14 days. The overall study demonstrated that the CS/MNPs/Si/TEO bionanocomposite film was efficient as a packaging material for prolonged shelf-life of surimi.

Abstract
Humic acids (HA) are considered a promising and inexpensive source for novel multifunctional materials for a huge range of applications. However, aggregation and degradation phenomena in aqueous environment prevent from their full exploitation. A valid strategy to address these issues relies on combining HA moieties at the molecular scale with an inorganic nanostructured component, leading to more stable hybrid nanomaterials with tunable functionalities. Indeed, chemical composition of HA can determine their interactions with the inorganic constituent in the hybrid nanoparticles and consequently affect their overall physico-chemical properties, including their stability and functional properties in aqueous environment. As a fundamental contribution to HA materials-based technology, this study aims at unveiling this aspect. To this purpose, SiO2 nanoparticles have been chosen as a model platform and three different HAs extracted from composted biomasses, manure (HA_Man), artichoke residues (HA_Art) and coffee grounds (HA_Cof), were employed to synthetize hybrid HA-SiO2 nanoparticles through in-situ sol-gel synthesis. Prepared samples were submitted to aging in water to assess their stability. Furthermore, antioxidant properties and physico-chemical properties of both as prepared and aged samples in aqueous environment were assessed through Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), N2 physisorption, Simultaneous Thermogravimetric (TGA) and Differential Scanning Calorimetric (DSC) Analysis, Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopies. The experimental results highlighted that hybrid HA-SiO2 nanostructures acted as dynamic systems which exhibit structural supramolecular reorganization during aging in aqueous environment with marked effects on physico-chemical and functional properties, including improved antioxidant activity. Obtained results enlighten a unique aspect of interactions between HA and inorganic nanoparticles that could be useful to predict their behavior in aqueous environment. Furthermore, the proposed approach traces a technological route for the exploitation of organic biowaste in the design of hybrid nanomaterials, providing a significant contribution to the development of waste to wealth strategies based on humic substances.
