Abstract
The white button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus), widely cultivated worldwide as an edible mushroom, is susceptible to browning, which significantly impacts its nutritional and commercial value. Extensive research has enhanced our understanding of the mechanisms underlying this browning process. Although the role of DNA methylation in regulating gene expression has been studied in many fungi, information specifically concerning DNA methylation during the browning in A. bisporus is still limited. In this study, we initially evaluated the impact of temperatures (4 ℃ and room temperature) on discoloration in A. bisporus, and samples with similar discoloration under different temperatures were collected for transcriptome and DNA methylation sequencing. The results revealed that DNA methylation was positively correlated with browning, suggesting its involvement during the browning in A. bisporus. Further analysis showed the heightened methylation levels were primarily attributed to increased methylation at CHG and CHH sites. By joint analysis of transcriptome and DNA methylome, 342 genes with significant expression changes were identified to be affected by DNA methylation, and finally 13 genes were considered as important browning genes under different signaling pathways, such as ABA/ET pathway. Notably, four DNA methyltransferases were identified and validated to play important role during browning in A. bisporus. Altogether, this study provides theoretical insights into the functions of DNMTs in A. bisporus, and offers new perspectives on the role of DNA methylation in edible mushrooms.

Abstract
The browning of Thompson seedless grapes during shade-drying significantly hampers the sustainable and healthy development of the industry. This study investigates the browning phenomenon and reactive oxygen species (ROS) dynamics when Thompson seedless grapes, treated with adenosine triphosphate (ATP), 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP), and water (QS), are dried in the shade. The effects of these treatments on ROS metabolism were analyzed through physiological, biochemical, and proteomic analyses. The findings showed that ATP treatment markedly delayed the increase in browning and reactive oxygen content, maintained high activity levels of ROS scavenging enzymes (superoxide dismutase and peroxidase), reduced malondialdehyde production-a membrane lipid peroxidation product-and preserved cell membrane integrity compared to QS and DNP treatments. Proteomic analysis identified three biological pathways involved in ROS metabolism in Thompson seedless grapes: glutathione metabolism, ascorbic acid, and glyoxalate metabolism, and peroxisomal pathways. Exogenous ATP treatment upregulated the expression of 17 proteins (SOD, APX, GPX, GST, GR), with significant increases in GST2 (D7SKQ2), POD1 (F6H095), SOD3 (D7TI74), and SOD4 (F6HTX9) by 1.707, 1.589, 1.644, and 2.213-fold, respectively. Therefore, ATP treatment maintains ROS scavenging proteins' expression, reduces the accumulation of ROS, maintains a balance in ROS metabolism, maintains the cell membrane stability and suppresses the oxidation of lipids, thus delaying the browning of Thompson seedless grapes. These findings are significant for regulating browning in the shade-drying process of Thompson seedless grapes.

Abstract
Compared to the control longan, DNP treatment elevated pulp breakdown index, reduced the values of pulp firmness, CSP, ISP, cellulose, and hemicellulose by enhancing the activities of PE, PG, Cx, XET, and β-Gal. Additionally, DNP treatment increased the levels of PLD, lipase, LOX, PA, and SFA, and decreased the values of PC, PI, USFA, U/S, and IUFA, displaying higher cell membrane permeability and more severe cell membrane damage in longan pulp. Furthermore, DNP treatment weakened the levels of SOD, CAT, APX, AsA, GSH, TP, and TF, thereby exacerbating ROS outbreak and MDA production. These results indicate that DNP treatment destroyed the antioxidant system to cause ROS eruption. This disruption further disturbed the metabolisms of membrane lipids and cell wall polysaccharides, leading to the breakdown of cell membrane and cell wall, and eventually aggravated longan pulp softening and breakdown. However, ATP treatment exhibited the opposite effects of DNP treatment.

Abstract
Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine), a well-known mammalian hormone, has been having a great relevance in the Plant World in recent years. Many of its physiological actions in plants are leading to possible features of agronomic interest, especially those related to improvements in tolerance to stressors and in the postharvest life of fruits and vegetables. Thus, through the exogenous application of melatonin or by modifying the endogenous biosynthesis of phytomelatonin, some change can be made in the functional levels of melatonin in tissues and their responses. Also, acting in the respective phytomelatonin biosynthesis enzymes, regulating the expression of tryptophan decarboxylase (TDC), tryptamine 5-hydroxylase (T5H), serotonin N-acetyltransferase (SNAT), N-acetylserotonin O-methyltransferase (ASMT), and caffeic acid O-methyltransferase (COMT), and recently the possible action of deacetylases on some intermediates offers promising opportunities for improving fruits and vegetables in postharvest and its marketability. Other regulators/effectors such as different transcription factors, protein kinases, phosphatases, miRNAs, protein-protein interactions, and some gasotransmitters such as nitric oxide or hydrogen sulfide were also considered in an exhaustive vision. Other interesting aspects such as the role of phytomelatonin in autophagic responses, the posttranslational reprogramming by protein-phosphorylation, ubiquitylation, SUMOylation, PARylation, persulfidation, and nitrosylation described in the phytomelatonin-mediated responses were also discussed, including the relationship of phytomelatonin and several plant hormones, for chilling injury and fungal decay alleviating. The current data about the phytomelatonin receptor in plants (CAND2/PMTR1), the effect of UV-B light and cold storage on the postharvest damage are presented and discussed. All this on the focus of a possible new action in the preservation of the quality of fruits and vegetables.

Abstract
Rapid postharvest quality deterioration of button mushroom as fruit body surface browning brings about senescence development and limits its distribution potential and postharvest storage. In this investigation, 0.5 mM of NaHS as the optimum concentration for H2S fumigation was applied to retain the quality of Agaricus bisporus mushrooms concerning some qualitative and biochemical attributes evaluation throughout 15 storage-day at 4 °C and 80-90% relative humidity. In H2S fumigated mushrooms, pileus browning index, weight loss and softening decreased, concomitant with higher cell membrane stability as revealed by subsidiary electrolyte leakage, malondialdehyde (MDA) and H2O2 contents compared to the control during the cold storage period. H2S fumigation boosted total phenolics, as presented by the enhanced phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) activity and total antioxidant scavenging activity, while polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity diminished. Moreover, in H2S fumigated mushrooms not only peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione reductase (GR) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities but also ascorbic acid and glutathione (GSH) contents increased, even though glutathione (GSSG) content declined. The raised endogenous H2S level prompted by greater cystathionine ß-synthase (CBS), cystathionine ?-lyase (CSE), cysteine synthase (CS), L-cysteine desulfhydrases (LCD) and D-cysteine desulfhydrases (DCD) enzymes activities until 10d in fumigated mushrooms. In general, the increase in endogenous H2S biogenesis promoted by H2S fumigation in button mushrooms resulted in retarding senescence development, maintaining redox balance by boosting multiple enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants defense parameters.

Abstract
Volvariella volvacea is a highly perishable mushroom that severely affects its postharvest commercial value. This study aimed to investigate the impact of high oxygen (O2) levels combined with nanocomposite packaging on the shelf-life quality of V. volvacea. Results showed that treatment with high concentrations of O2 (80% and 100% O2) and nanocomposite packaging effectively delayed the quality deterioration of V. volvacea, resulting in better postharvest appearance, higher firmness, lower weight loss, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, and leakage of membrane electrolytes. Further analysis revealed the combination treatments ameliorated oxidative stress by inducing antioxidant enzymes and the glutathione-ascorbate (GSH-AsA) cycle at both enzymatic and transcriptional levels, thereby activating the antioxidant system. Additionally, the treatments enhanced activities of key enzymes in phenylpropane metabolism, leading to a reduction in the decrease of total phenolics and flavonoids. This work provides new insights into the development of postharvest technologies to prolong the storage life of V. volvacea.

Abstract
Extracellular ATP plays a key role in regulating plants stress responses. Here, we aimed to determine whether ATP can alleviate the glyphosate toxicity in maize seedlings under high temperature by regulating antioxidant responses. Foliar spraying with 100 μM glyphosate inhibited the growth of maize seedlings at room temperature (25 °C), leading to an increase in shikimic acid accumulation and oxidative stress (evaluated via lipid peroxidation, free proline, and H2O2 content) in the leaves, all of which were further exacerbated by high temperature (35 °C). The growth inhibition and oxidative stress caused by glyphosate were both alleviated by exogenous ATP. Moreover, the glyphosate-induced antioxidant enzyme activity and antioxidant accumulation were attenuated by high temperature, while ATP treatment reversed this inhibitory effect. Similarly, qPCR data showed that the relative expression levels of antioxidant enzyme-related genes (CAT1, GR1, and γ-ECS) in maize leaves were upregulated by ATP before exposure to GLY. Moreover, high temperature-enhanced GLY residue accumulation in maize leaves was reduced by ATP. ATP-induced detoxification was attenuated through NADPH oxidase (NOX) inhibition. Higher NOX activities and O2•- production were noted in ATP-treated maize leaves compared to controls prior to GLY treatment, indicating that the extracellular ATP-induced alleviation of GLY toxicity was closely associated with NOX-dependent reactive oxygen species signalling. The current findings present a new approach for reducing herbicide toxicity in crops exposed to high temperatures.

Abstract
Browning discoloration is a critical issue that negatively affects the quality of fresh-cut products and their industrial growth. Although many individual anti-browning technologies have been adopted, very few reports on the combination use of natural product extracts and physical methods exist. This study investigated the use of Flos Sophorae Immaturus extract in conjunction with thermal treatment and discovered that the combination effectively retarded browning in fresh-cut potatoes. Accordingly, the activities of polyphenol oxidase, peroxidase, and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase, as well as phenol accumulation, were effectively regulated. Meanwhile, this combination treatment also allowed for the modulation of nitric oxide synthase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase activities, while also regulating the concentrations of nitric oxide, superoxide anion, and hydrogen peroxide. Furthermore, the duplex treatment also regulated the antioxidant capacity and malondialdehyde concentrations. In addition, 39 phytoactive compounds, including protocatechuic acid, quercetin, (-)-alpha-pinene, and matrine, were identified in the extract, which may function as the anti-browning composition. These findings suggest that the combination technology modulated the dynamic equilibrium of production and clearance of nitric oxide and reactive oxygen species, thereby reducing browning deterioration. This is, to our knowledge, the first report of the combined application of Flos Sophorae Immaturus and thermal treatment, which may offer a novel option for fresh-cut preservation. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: The feasibility of integrating a novel highly efficient, safe, environmentally friendly, and easy-to-operate anti-browning alternative, with the ability to integrate into the existing processing line was investigated. The color of sliced potato chips was significantly improved (73.4%) by dipping them in a 0.01% Flos Sophorae Immaturus solution for 5 min and then in 55°C water for 2 min. In this regard, superior browning alleviation may depend on the regulation of the browning reaction and the NO-ROS network. This method has a promising future for making fresh-cut products more appealing to consumers and may provide guidance for fresh-cut producers and related industries.

Abstract
The role of exogenous adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) in the regulation of antioxidant response in plants under heavy metal stress is unclear. Here, we investigated the effects of exogenous ATP application on plant growth, antioxidant response, and Cd accumulation in maize seedlings. Treatment with 0.1 mM CdCl2 moderately reduced dry weight, decreased chlorophyll content, impaired photosynthesis, and increased lipid peroxidation in maize seedlings compared with controls. However, toxicity due to Cd was alleviated after 10-200 µM ATP treatment. Subsequently, the activity of Cd-regulated antioxidant enzymes, antioxidant metabolite accumulation, and total antioxidant capacity were drastically enhanced after 50 µM ATP treatment. Similar patterns were observed in the ADP-treated group but not in the AMP-treated group under Cd stress. However, the ATP-induced elevation in antioxidant defense ability was decreased by the inhibition of NADPH oxidase (NOX). ATP-induced elevation in NOX activity and H2O2 production was partly reversed by the inhibition of NOX in maize seedlings under Cd stress. Furthermore, ATP promoted Cd accumulation in the roots and shoots of maize seedlings. However, the ATP-induced increase in Cd accumulation was partly abolished by the inhibition of NOX. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the role and mechanism of exogenous ATP in regulating plant growth, antioxidant response, and heavy metal phytoextraction. The study provides a new method based on exogenous ATP for enhancing heavy metal tolerance in plants.

Abstract
Edible mushrooms are the highly demanded foods of which production and consumption have been steadily increasing globally. Owing to the quality loss and short shelf-life in harvested mushrooms, it is necessary for the implementation of effective preservation and intelligent evaluation technologies to alleviate this issue. The aim of this review was to analyze the development and innovation thematic lines, topics, and trends by bibliometric analysis and review of the literature methods. The challenges faced in researching these topics were proposed and the mechanisms of quality loss in mushrooms during storage were updated. This review summarized the effects of chemical processing (antioxidants, ozone, and coatings), physical treatments (non-thermal plasma, packaging and latent thermal storage) and other emerging application on the quality of fresh mushrooms while discussing the efficiency in extending the shelf-life. It also discussed the emerging evaluation techniques based on the various chemometric methods and computer vision system in monitoring the freshness and predicting the shelf-life of mushrooms which have been developed. Preservation technology optimization and dynamic quality evaluation are vital for achieving mushroom quality control. This review can provide a comprehensive research reference for reducing mushroom quality loss and extending shelf-life, along with optimizing efficiency of storage and transportation operations.

Abstract
China has a large variety of edible mushrooms and ranks first in the world in terms of production and variety. Nevertheless, due to their high moisture content and rapid respiration rate, they experience constant quality deterioration, browning of color, loss of moisture, changes in texture, increases in microbial populations, and loss of nutrition and flavor during postharvest storage. Therefore, this paper reviews the effects of essential oils and plant extracts on the preservation of edible mushrooms and summarizes their mechanisms of action to better understand their effects during the storage of mushrooms. The quality degradation process of edible mushrooms is complex and influenced by internal and external factors. Essential oils and plant extracts are considered environmentally friendly preservation methods for better postharvest quality. This review aims to provide a reference for the development of new green and safe preservation and provides research directions for the postharvest processing and product development of edible mushrooms.

Abstract
Melatonin, a tryptophan-derived molecule, is endogenously generated in animal, plant, fungal and prokaryotic cells. Given its antioxidant properties, it is involved in a myriad of signaling functions associated with various aspects of plant growth and development. In higher plants, melatonin (Mel) interacts with plant regulators such as phytohormones, as well as reactive oxygen and nitrogen species including hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S). It shows great potential as a biotechnological tool to alleviate biotic and abiotic stress, to delay senescence and to conserve the sensory and nutritional quality of postharvest horticultural products which are of considerable economic importance worldwide. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the biochemistry of Mel, whose endogenous induction and exogenous application can play an important biotechnological role in enhancing the marketability and hence earnings from postharvest horticultural crops.

Abstract
Due to the global use of cold chain, the development of postharvest technology to reduce chilling injury (CI) in postharvest fruits and vegetables during storage and transport is needed urgently. Considerable evidence shows that maintaining intracellular adenosine triphosphate (iATP) in harvested fruits and vegetables is beneficial to inhibiting CI occurrence. Extracellular ATP (eATP) is a damage-associated signal molecule and plays an important role in CI of postharvest fruits and vegetables through its receptor and subsequent signal transduction under low-temperature stress. The development of new aptasensors for the simultaneous determination of eATP level allows for better understanding of the roles of eATP in a myriad of responses mediated by low-temperature stress in relation to the chilling tolerance of postharvest fruits and vegetables. The multiple biological functions of eATP and its receptors in postharvest fruits and vegetables were attributed to interactions with reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitric oxide (NO) in coordination with phytohormones and other signaling molecules via downstream physiological activities. The complicated interconnection among eATP in relation to its receptors, eATP/iATP homeostasis, ROS, NO, and heat shock proteins triggered by eATP recognition has been emphasized. This paper reviews recent advances in the beneficial effects of energy handling, outlines the production and homeostasis of eATP, discusses the possible mechanism of eATP and its receptors in chilling tolerance, and provides future research directions for CI in postharvest fruits and vegetables during low-temperature storage.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Extracellular ATP (exATP) has been shown to act as a signal molecule for regulating growth, development, and responses of plants to the external environment. RESULTS In this study, we investigated the possible involvement of exATP in regulating the stunted growth caused by repeated wounding. The present work showed that the repeated wounding caused the decreases in leaf area, fresh weight, dry weight, and root length of Arabidopsis seedlings, while the exATP level was enhanced by the repeated wounding. Repeated application of exogenous ATP had similar effects on the plant growth, as the repeated wounding. Through the comparison of p2k1-3 mutant (in which T-DNA disrupted the gene coding P2K1, as exATP receptor) and wide type (WT) plants, it was found that the mutation in P2K1 decreased the sensitivity of plant growth to the repeated wounding and exogenous ATP application. Further works showed that the ibuprofen (IBU, an inhibitor of jasmonate biosynthesis) partially rescued the wound-induced growth degradation. In comparison, the P2K1 mutation partly rescued the wound-induced growth degradation, whereas this mutation failed to do so in the wounded seedlings treated with IBU, indicating that the role of exATP in regulating the growth degradation by repeated wounding could be linked to the JA signaling pathway. CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, these results indicate that exATP could be a regulator for the stunted growth of plants by repeated wounding.

Abstract
Melatonin, a bioactive compound and an important signaling molecule produced in plants and animals, is involved in many biological processes. However, its function and synthetic pathways in fungi are poorly understood. Here, the samples from Tolypocladium guangdongense, a highly valued edible fungus with functional food properties, were collected under different experimental conditions to quantify the levels of melatonin and its intermediates. The results showed that the intracellular melatonin content was markedly improved by Congo red (CR), cold, and heat stresses; the levels of intracellular melatonin and its intermediates increased at the primordial (P) and fruiting body (FB) stages. However, the levels of most intermediates exhibited a notable decrease under CR stress. Several genes related to melatonin synthesis, excluding AADC (aromatic-L-amino-acid decarboxylase), were markedly upregulated at an early stage of CR stress but downregulated later. Compared to the mycelial stage, those genes were significantly upregulated at the P and FB stages. Additionally, exogenous melatonin promoted resistance to several abiotic stressors and P formation in T. guangdongense. This study is the first to report melatonin biosynthesis pathway in macro-fungi. Our results should help in studying the diversity of melatonin function and melatonin-synthesis pathways and provide a new viewpoint for melatonin applications in the edible-medicinal fungus.

Abstract
Currently, melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytrytamine) is recognized as a potential scavenger of free radicals. In this study, the effect of exogenous melatonin at various concentrations (0.05, 0.1, and 0.2 mM) on the texture, sensory qualities, and electron leakage in white mushrooms was evaluated at 3 ± 1 °C. It was observed that mushrooms treated with 0.1 mM melatonin were of good quality and their electron leakage was dramatically dampened. The results showed that 0.1 mM melatonin retained a higher adenosine triphosphate level and also prevented the release of cytochrome c into the cytoplasm. More significantly, it prominently inhibited electron leakage by increasing the activities of complexes I and III by the upregulation of AbNdufB9 and AbRIP1. It also regulated respiratory states in mushrooms; delayed the decline of respiratory state 3; enhanced respiratory state 4; boosted the oxidative phosphorylation and efficiency of mitochondria; and ultimately retarded the senescence of the white mushrooms.

Abstract
In this study, the mechanism activated by melatonin treatment at 100 µM for maintaining nutraceutical properties in pomegranate fruits during storage at 4 °C for 120 days was investigated. Our results showed that the higher G6PDH and 6PGDH activities in pomegranate fruits treated with melatonin may be responsible for sufficient supply of intracellular NADPH. Also, higher AA and GSH accumulation in pomegranate fruits treated with melatonin may ascribe to higher APX and GR activities coincided with lower AAO activity. In addition, pomegranate fruits treated with melatonin exhibited significantly higher PAL activity resulting in higher phenols and anthocyanins accumulation as well as higher DPPH scavenging capacity. Additionally, higher AOX gene expression in pomegranate fruits treated with melatonin may be beneficial for ROS scavenging molecules accumulation. Therefore, maintaining nutraceutical properties of pomegranate fruits treated with melatonin may ascribe to sufficient intracellular NADPH supply by promoting G6PDH and 6PGDH activities during cold storage.
