Abstract
Chilling injury (CI) during postharvest storage seriously impairs bananas' quality and marketability. This study systematically investigated CI mechanisms through physicochemical, microstructural, and optical analyses and innovatively developed a hyperspectral imaging (HSI)-based approach for early CI detection. Bananas stored at suboptimal (7 °C) and optimal (13 °C) conditions exhibited distinct physicochemical changes. CI progression was related to increased browning symptoms, an abnormal moisture redistribution (reduced pulp moisture content), and delayed softening. Microstructural analysis revealed membrane destabilization, cellular lysis, intercellular cavity formation, and inhibited starch hydrolysis under chilling stress. Hyperspectral microscope imaging (HMI) captured chilling-induced spectral variations (400-1000 nm), enabling the t-SNE-based clustering of CI-affected tissues. Machine learning models using first derivative (1-st)-processed spectra achieved a high accuracy. Both PLS-DA and RF had a 99% calibration accuracy and 98.5% prediction accuracy for CI classification. Notably, HSI detected spectral signatures of early CI (2 days post-chilling treatment) before visible symptoms, achieving a 100% identification accuracy with an optimized PLS-DA combined with 1-st processing. This study provides a theoretical basis for studying fruit CI mechanisms and a novel nondestructive optical method for early CI monitoring in postharvest supply chains.

Abstract
Nanomaterials (NMs) hold significant potential for enhancing agricultural production, extending the shelf life, and maintaining the quality of postharvest vegetables and fruits. In this study, after foliar spraying with 1, 10, and 50 mg of L-1 Fe-P NMs at different stages (seedling, flowering, and fruit stage), the pepper plant growth was significantly improved. In particular, the foliar application of 10 mg of L-1 Fe-P NMs during the flowering stage was found to be an optimal cultivation approach to promote the growth, yield, and freshness of peppers. Compared with the control group, Fe-P NMs increased net photosynthetic rate, plant height, and fruit number by 132.7%, 40.4%, and 265.7%, respectively. The applied Fe-P NMs, at the flowering stage, altered the capsaicin metabolic pathway, upregulating the genes for the synthesis of total phenols, flavonoids, lignans, and capsaicinoids. Consequently, these metabolites, which are beneficial for maintaining the freshness of pepper fruits, were increased. Furthermore, Fe-P NMs at the flowering stage downregulated the abundance of rot-causing microorganisms (Enterobacter and Chryseobacterium) and upregulated beneficial microorganisms (Pseudomonas, Arthrobacter, Sphingobacterium, and Paenibacillus) to change the microbial community structure. This ultimately created a micro-ecological environment conducive to the preservation of pepper fruits. For comparison, during pepper fruit storage, dipping and spraying with Fe-P NM suspensions effectively delayed weight loss and enhanced the growth of beneficial bacteria. Nevertheless, the effect was less pronounced than preharvest foliar application. This study provides insights into the pre- or postharvest application of NMs for improving the preservation performance of pepper fruits.

Abstract
Introduction The systematic investigation of the biochemical and molecular bases of salicylic acid (SA) in the postharvest physiological process of green pepper fruit remains unclear. Methods Accordingly, this study aims to analyze the effects of 0.5 mM-SA preharvest treatments, applied by foliar spraying or irrigation, on the ripening and senescence of green pepper fruit for 28 days of storage at 7 °C. Results The study revealed that the preharvest application of SA, either by foliar spraying or irrigation, significantly delayed losses of weight, firmness and color during postharvest. Additionally, both treatments increased the total soluble solids and total acidity content, which lead to a significantly reduced ripening index after storage. These results were evidenced by a slowing down of the ripening and senescence processes, accompanied by the stimulation of the antioxidant enzymes in those SA-treated green pepper fruits. Furthermore, a significant increase in chlorophylls, phenolics, ascorbic acid and dehydroascorbic acid content was observed. The SA treatments also enhanced the total antioxidant activity, in both hydrophilic and lipophilic phases. These positive effects were mediated by the upregulation of the relative response of the CaAPX, CaPOD, CaPAL, CaDHAR2 genes at harvest. Discussion These findings reinforce the existing knowledge gap regarding the impact of foliar spraying or irrigation SA on the intricate interplay between metabolites and genes related to the antioxidant system in regulating the bell pepper fruit ripening and senescence. The impact of both applications exhibited comparable results; however, the irrigation was identified as the most advantageous due to its ease applicability and cost effectiveness in comparison.

Abstract
Low temperature storage is widely used for storage and transportation of fruits and vegetables after harvest. As a cold-sensitive fruit vegetable, post-harvest solanaceous vegetables and fruits are susceptible to chilling injury during low temperature storage, which reduces its sensory quality and edible quality and shortens its storage period, thus leading to huge economic losses. Therefore, it is an essential to clarify the occurrence mechanism of chilling injury caused by low temperature storage in solanaceous vegetables and fruits, and to propose corresponding prevention and control measures for chilling injury. In recent years, a series of progress has been made in the research on chilling injury prevention and control and low temperature stress tolerance of solanaceous vegetables and fruits. This paper describes the chilling injury symptoms of postharvest solanaceous vegetables and fruits, clarifies the physiological and biochemical mechanisms in the chilling injury process, the molecular mechanisms, and prevention and control measures, and summarizes the latest research advancements on chilling injury and chilling tolerance regulation of solanaceous vegetables and fruits, which can provide valuable references for low temperature storage and chilling injury prevention and control measures of solanaceous vegetables and fruits.

Abstract
Water deficit stress is one of the most significant environmental abiotic factors influencing plant growth and metabolism globally. Recently, encouraging outcomes for the use of nanomaterials in agriculture have been shown to reduce the adverse effects of drought stress on plants. The present study aimed to investigate the impact of various carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) on the physiological, morphological, and biochemical characteristics of bell pepper plants subjected to water deficit stress conditions. The study was carried out as a factorial experiment using a completely randomized design (CRD) in three replications with a combination of three factors. The first factor considered was irrigation intensity with three levels [(50%, 75%, and 100% (control) of the field capacity (FC)] moisture. The second factor was the use of carbon nanomaterials [(fullerene C60, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs)] at various concentrations [(control (0), 100, 200, and 1000 mg/L)]. The study confirmed the foliar uptake of CNMs using the Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) technique. The effects of the CNMs were observed in a dose-dependent manner, with both stimulatory and toxicity effects being observed. The results revealed that exposure to MWNTs (1000 mg/L) under well-watered irrigation, and GNPs treatment (1000 mg/L) under severe drought stress (50% FC) significantly (P < 0.01) improved fruit production and fruit dry weight by 76.2 and 73.2% as compared to the control, respectively. Also, a significant decrease (65.9%) in leaf relative water content was obtained in plants subjected to soil moisture of 50% FC over the control. Treatment with GNPs at 1000 mg/L under 50% FC increased electrolyte leakage index (83.6%) compared to control. Foliar applied MWNTs enhanced the leaf gas exchange, photosynthesis rate, and chlorophyll a and b concentrations, though decreased the oxidative shock in leaves which was demonstrated by the diminished electrolyte leakage index and upgrade in relative water content and antioxidant capacity compared to the control. Plants exposed to fullerene C60 at 100 and 1000 mg/L under soil moisture of 100 and 75% FC significantly increased total flavonoids and phenols content by 63.1 and 90.9%, respectively, as compared to the control. A significant increase (184.3%) in antioxidant activity (FRAP) was observed in plants exposed to 200 mg/L MWCNTs under irrigation of 75% FC relative to the control. The outcomes proposed that CNMs could differentially improve the plant and fruit characteristics of bell pepper under dry conditions, however, the levels of changes varied among CNMs concentrations. Therefore, both stimulatory and toxicity effects of employed CNMs were observed in a dose-dependent manner. The study concludes that the use of appropriate (type/dose) CNMs through foliar application is a practical tool for controlling the water shortage stress in bell pepper. These findings will provide the basis for more research on CNMs-plant interactions, and with help to ensure their safe and sustainable use within the agricultural chains.

Abstract
Low temperature is a critical environmental stress factor that restricts crop growth and geographical distribution, significantly impacting crop quality and yield. When plants are exposed to low temperatures, a series of changes occur in their external morphology and internal physiological and biochemical metabolism. This article comprehensively reviews the alterations and regulatory mechanisms of physiological and biochemical indices, such as membrane system stability, redox system, fatty acid content, photosynthesis, and osmoregulatory substances, in response to low-temperature stress in plants. Furthermore, we summarize recent research on signal transduction and regulatory pathways, phytohormones, epigenetic modifications, and other molecular mechanisms mediating the response to low temperatures in higher plants. In addition, we outline cultivation practices to improve plant cold resistance and highlight the cold-related genes used in molecular breeding. Last, we discuss future research directions, potential application prospects of plant cold resistance breeding, and recent significant breakthroughs in the research and application of cold resistance mechanisms.

Abstract
The fine-tuning of the intricate network of plant growth hormones empowers the balanced responses of plants to environmental and developmental signals. Salicylic acid and jasmonates are emerging as advanced hormones that provide plants with resistance to environmental stresses. Senescence is characterized by coordinated and systematic crosstalk between phytohormones that remodels the biochemical and physiological mechanisms in plants, resulting in cell death. The present investigation examines the role of jasmonates (methyl jasmonate and jasmonic acid) and salicylic acid (SA) in regulating the petal senescence of detached stalks of Cosmos sulphureus. Based on our results, it was revealed that SA and jasmonic acid (JA) at 40 μM and methyl jasmonate (MJ) at 0.75 μM concentration delayed the senescence of detached flowers of C. sulphureus considerably. These growth regulators improved the membrane stability, reinforced the antioxidant enzyme activities and averted the upsurge of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content in the petals. Additionally, SA and jasmonates preserved higher content of total phenols, reducing sugars and soluble proteins in the petals, besides impeding the bacterial growth in testing solutions which corroborated with the maximum solution uptake. The elevated soluble protein content was found to be associated with low specific protease activity (SPA) and α-amino acid content in the petal tissues. Our study concluded that SA and jasmonates delayed flower senescence by averting oxidative stress and maintaining the nutritional status of the petals.

Abstract
The regulatory mechanisms underlying the salicylic acid (SA)-mediated inhibition of senescence in pummelo fruit, the largest known citrus variety, remain unclear. Herein, postharvest 0.3% SA treatment was demonstrated to delay postharvest 'Jinshayou' pummelo senescence, as evidenced by the inhibitions in firmness loss, electrolyte leakage increase, and color change. Using comparative transcriptomic data, a total of 4367, 3769, and 1659 DEGs were identified between CK0 and CK60, CK0 and SA60, and CK60 and SA60, respectively. Further GO analysis revealed that DEGs were mainly implicated in the processes of cell wall modification and phenylpropanoid pathway during fruit senescence. More importantly, postharvest exogenous 0.3% SA treatment was observed to inhibit CWDEs activities and their encoding gene expression, retain higher protopectin, cellulose, and hemicelluloses contents, as well as reduce WSP content, thus maintaining cell wall structure. These findings collectively indicated that postharvest SA treatment was a green and useful preservative for alleviating fruit senescence and prolonging the storage life of harvested 'Jiashayou' pummelo fruit.

Abstract
High-power ultrasound in gas-phase (28.8 kW/m3 for 120 min at 17.5 ± 0.3 °C) has been evaluated as a pre-treatment to enhance the release of antioxidants and phenolic compounds from red bell pepper during digestion. The moisture content decreased (34 ± 4%) while both the antioxidant activity (between 4 ± 1% and 21 ± 1%) and the phenolic compounds content (37 ± 4%) increased after the treatment. Moreover, microstructural changes were observed in the treated sample, with the appearance of breaks in the plant tissue, cell shrinkage, and an increased number of cells per area unit (28 ± 2%). Bioaccessibility was determined by in vitro gastrointestinal digestion. The total release of antioxidants and phenolic compounds after gastrointestinal digestion was 22-55% higher and 45 ± 7% higher, respectively, in the sonicated sample, with cell swelling and a 9.2 ± 0.1% higher number of cells per area unit. Therefore, the ultrasound treatment caused microstructural changes in the red bell pepper tissue, which could help to explain the higher release of bioactive compounds.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The loss of postharvest storability of pummelo fruit reduces its commodity value for long run. To maintain its storability, the effects of postharvest dipping treatment by salicylic acid (SA) with different concentrations (0, 0.1, 0.2, or 0.3%) were investigated on pummelo fruit (Citrus maxima Merr. cv. Jinshayou) during the room temperature storage at 20 ± 2°C for 90 d. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Among all treatments, pre-storage SA treatment at 0.3% demonstrated the most significant ability to reduce fruit decay incidence, decrease weight loss, delay peel color-turned process, and inhibit the declines in total soluble solids (TSS) as well as titratable acid (TA) content. The increases in electrolyte leakage, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and malondialdehyde (MDA) content of the 0.3% SA-treated pummelo fruit were reduced compared to the control (dipped in distilled water). Pummelo fruit treated with 0.3% SA exhibited the most outstanding ability to excess reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, as evidenced by promoted the increases in glutathione (GSH), total phenolics and flavonoids contents, delayed the AsA decline, and enhanced the activities of antioxidant enzymes and their encoding genes expression. CONCLUSION Pre-storage treatment dipped with SA, particularly at 0.3%, can be used as a useful and safe preservation method to maintain higher postharvest storability and better overall quality of 'Jinshayou' pummelo fruit, and thus delaying postharvest senescence and extend the storage life up to 90 d at room temperature.

Abstract
Cucumber fruit is very sensitive to chilling injury, which rapidly depreciates their commodity value. Herein, the effect of fucoidan treatment on cucumber under cold stress were investigated. Fucoidan treatment of cold-stored cucumber alleviated the occurrence of chilling injury, delayed weight loss, lowered electrolyte leakage and respiration rate, and retarded malondialdehyde accumulation. Different from the control fruit, fucoidan treated fruit showed a high level of fatty acid unsaturated content, fatty acid unsaturation, and unsaturation index and increased ω-FDAS activity, along with upregulated expression levels of CsSAD and CsFAD genes. Fucoidan reduced the phosphatidic acid content and membrane lipid peroxidation, lowered the phospholipase D (PLD) and lipoxygenase (LOX) activity, and downregulated the expression levels of CsPLD and CsLOX genes. Collectively, fucoidan treatment maintained the integrity of cell membrane in cold-stress cucumbers. The results provide a new prospect for the development of fucoidan as a preservative agent in the low-temperature postharvest storage of cucumbers.

Abstract
Due to the global use of cold chain, the development of postharvest technology to reduce chilling injury (CI) in postharvest fruits and vegetables during storage and transport is needed urgently. Considerable evidence shows that maintaining intracellular adenosine triphosphate (iATP) in harvested fruits and vegetables is beneficial to inhibiting CI occurrence. Extracellular ATP (eATP) is a damage-associated signal molecule and plays an important role in CI of postharvest fruits and vegetables through its receptor and subsequent signal transduction under low-temperature stress. The development of new aptasensors for the simultaneous determination of eATP level allows for better understanding of the roles of eATP in a myriad of responses mediated by low-temperature stress in relation to the chilling tolerance of postharvest fruits and vegetables. The multiple biological functions of eATP and its receptors in postharvest fruits and vegetables were attributed to interactions with reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitric oxide (NO) in coordination with phytohormones and other signaling molecules via downstream physiological activities. The complicated interconnection among eATP in relation to its receptors, eATP/iATP homeostasis, ROS, NO, and heat shock proteins triggered by eATP recognition has been emphasized. This paper reviews recent advances in the beneficial effects of energy handling, outlines the production and homeostasis of eATP, discusses the possible mechanism of eATP and its receptors in chilling tolerance, and provides future research directions for CI in postharvest fruits and vegetables during low-temperature storage.

Abstract
This study aimed to determine the effect of hydrogen sulfide on chilling injury (CI) of banana (Musa spp.) during cold storage (7°C). It was observed that hydrogen sulfide application (2 mmol L-1) markedly reduced the CI index and showed significantly higher chlorophyll contents, along with suppressed chlorophyll peroxidase and chlorophyllase enzyme activity. The treated banana fruits exhibited substantially higher peel lightness (L*), along with significantly a lower browning degree and soluble quinone content. The treated bananas had substantially a higher endogenous hydrogen sulfide content and higher activity of its biosynthesis-associated enzymes such as D-cysteine desulfhydrase (DCD) and L-cysteine desulfhydrase (LCD), along with significantly lower ion leakage, lipid peroxidation, hydrogen peroxide, and superoxide anion concentrations. Hydrogen sulfide-treated banana fruits showed an increased proline content and proline metabolism-associated enzymes including ornithine aminotransferase (OAT), Δ1-pyrroline-5-carboxylate synthetase (P5CS), and proline dehydrogenase (PDH). In the same way, hydrogen sulfide-fumigated banana fruits accumulated higher endogenous γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) due to enhanced activity of glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) and GABA transaminase (GABA-T) enzymes. The hydrogen sulfide-treated fruits exhibited higher total phenolics owing to lower polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and peroxidase (POD) activity and stimulated phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL). The treated banana exhibited higher ascorbate peroxidase (APX), catalase (CAT), glutathione reductase (GR), dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR), monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, along with higher glutathione (GSH) and ascorbic acid (AsA) concentrations and a significantly lower dehydroascorbic acid (DHA) content. In conclusion, hydrogen sulfide treatment could be utilized for CI alleviation of banana fruits during cold storage.

Abstract
In recent decades, many new and exciting findings have paved the way to the better understanding of plant responses in various environmental changes. Some major areas are focused on role of phytohormone during abiotic stresses. Salicylic acid (SA) is one such plant hormone that has been implicated in processes not limited to plant growth, development, and responses to environmental stress. This review summarizes the various roles and functions of SA in mitigating abiotic stresses to plants, including heating, chilling, salinity, metal toxicity, drought, ultraviolet radiation, etc. Consistent with its critical roles in plant abiotic tolerance, this review identifies the gaps in the literature with regard to the complex signalling network between SA and reactive oxygen species, ABA, Ca2+, and nitric oxide. Furthermore, the molecular mechanisms underlying signalling networks that control development and stress responses in plants and underscore prospects for future research on SA concerning abiotic-stressed plants are also discussed.

Abstract
Intelligent packaging with indicators that provide information about the quality of food products can inform the consumer regarding food safety and reduce food waste. A solid material for a pH-responsive indicator was developed from hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) composited with microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). MCC at 5%, 10%, 20%, and 30% w/w was introduced into the HPMC matrix and the physical, barrier, thermal, and optical properties of the HPMC/MCC bio-composite (HMB) films were analyzed. At 5, 10, and 20% MCC, improved mechanical, transparency, and barrier properties were observed, where HMB with 20% of MCC (H20MB) showed the best performance. Therefore, H20MB was selected as the biodegradable solid material for fabricating Roselle anthocyanins (RA) pH sensing indicators. The performance of the RA-H20MB indicator was evaluated by monitoring its response to ammonia vapor and tracking freshness status of chicken tenderloin. The RA-H20MB showed a clear color change with respect to ammonia exposure and quality change of chicken tenderloin; the color changed from red to magenta, purple and green, respectively. These results indicated that RA-H20MB can be used as a biodegradable pH sensing indicator to determine food quality and freshness.

Abstract
As a ubiquitous and essential part of phytophysiology, phytohormones have attracted tremendous attention for effective regulation of development and senescence of agricultural products. However, the postharvest mechanisms of phytohormones have not been thoroughly understood. This review provides an overview of common phytohormones for extending the shelf life of fruit and vegetables. The modulation principles are discussed in detail based on defence gene expression activation, sensitivity of senescence-related phytohormones inhibition, antioxidant enzymes activity stimulation, and cell membrane integrity maintenance. The applications of jasmonates, salicylic acids, cytokinins, gibberellins, polyamines, and brassinosteroids in preserving fruit and vegetables based on defence signaling network stimulation, senescence-related phytohormones expression or sensitivity repression, as well as antioxidant system enhancement and cell membrane integrity sustentation are introduced. The challenges and problems to be solved are discussed, and new trends of expanding lifespan by combining phytohormones with other treatments are also suggested. Although phytohormones have been demonstrated to have promising efforts in maintaining agricultural products, more novel and effective combination treatments should be developed to complement each other.
