Synthesis of a novel tannic acid-functionalized polypropylene as antioxidant active-packaging materials

Tannic acid modified microscale zero valent iron (TA-mZVI) with enhanced anti-passivation capability for Cr(VI) removal

The removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions using microscale zerovalent iron (mZVI) shows promising potential. However, the surface passivation of mZVI particles hinders its widespread application. In this study, we prepared tannic acid (TA) modified mZVI composite (TA-mZVI) by a simple sonication method. The introduction of TA allowing TA-mZVI composite to adsorb Cr(VI) rapidly under electrostatic forces attraction, guarantying TA-mZVI exhibited remarkable Cr(VI) removal capacity with a maximum adsorption capacity of 106.1 mg⋅g-1. At an initial pH of 3, it achieved a rapid removal efficiency of 96.2% within just 5 min, which was 7.7 times higher than that of mZVI. Various characterizations, including XPS and CV analysis, indicated that the formation of TA-Fe complexes accelerates electron transfer. In addition, TA endows functional groups to TA-mZVI, raising the dispersion and stability and serves as a protective layer hindering passivation. Further mechanistic analysis revealed that Cr(VI) removal by TA-mZVI followed an adsorption-reduction-precipitation mechanism, with TA mitigating the surface passivation of mZVI and facilitating the reduction of most Cr(VI) to Cr(III). Batch cyclic experiments revealed that TA-mZVI exhibited satisfactory performance, maintaining over 85% Cr(VI) removal even after five cycles and minimally affected by various coexisting ions. With notable advantages in cost-effectiveness, ease-synthesis and recovery, this work provides a great promise for developing efficient reactive adsorbent for addressing Cr(VI) contamination in aqueous solutions.

Antimicrobial films fabricated with myricetin nanoparticles and chitosan derivation microgels for killing pathogenic bacteria in drinking water

Pathogenic bacteria in drinking water threaten human health and life. In the work, antimicrobial films composed of myricetin@tannic acid (My@TA) nanoparticles (NPs) and chitosan derivation microgels were developed to kill pathogenic bacteria in drinking water. Hydrophobic My was first made into water soluble My@TA NPs using a solvent exchange method with TA as stabilizer. Polymeric microgels of carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS)/hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HACC) were then fabricated with a blending method. CMCS&HACC/My@TA multilayer films were further deposited on the internal surface of PET bottles by using a layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly technique. The PET bottles coated with the films could effectively kill pathogenic bacteria in water such as S. aureus, E. coli, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Listeria monocytogenes and methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). In addition, CMCS&HACC/My@TA films displayed good antioxidant activity, water resistance, and in vivo biocompatibility with heart, liver, spleen, lung and kidney organs. We believe that the container coated with CMCS&HACC/My@TA films can be applied to prevent microbial contamination of drinking water.

Type I Collagen-Adhesive and ROS-Scavenging Nanoreactors Enhanced Retinal Ganglion Cell Survival in an Experimental Optic Nerve Crush Model

Traumatic optic neuropathy (TON) is a severe condition characterized by retinal ganglion cell (RGC) death, often leading to irreversible vision loss, and the death of RGCs is closely associated with oxidative stress. Unfortunately, effective treatment options for TON are lacking. To address this, catalase (CAT) is encapsulated in a tannic acid (TA)/poly(ethylenimine)-crosslinked hollow nanoreactor (CAT@PTP), which exhibited enhanced anchoring in the retina due to TA-collagen adhesion. The antioxidative activity of both CAT and TA synergistically eliminated reactive oxygen species (ROS) to save RGCs in the retina, thereby treating TON. In vitro experiments demonstrated that the nanoreactors preserve the enzymatic activity of CAT and exhibit high adhesion to type I collagen. The combination of CAT and TA-based nanoreactors enhanced ROS elimination while maintaining high biocompatibility. In an optic nerve crush rat model, CAT@PTP is effectively anchored to the retina via TA-collagen adhesion after a single vitreous injection, and RGCs are significantly preserved without adverse events. CAT@PTP exhibited a protective effect on retinal function. Given the abundance of collagen that exists in ocular tissues, these findings may contribute to the further application of this multifunctional nanoreactor in ocular diseases to improve therapeutic efficacy and reduce adverse effects.

Integrated the embedding delivery system and targeted oxygen scavenger enhances free radical scavenging capacity

World trends in oil crop growing area, yield, and production over the last 10 years exhibited an increase of 48 %, 82 %, and 240 %, respectively. Concerning reduced shelf-life of oil-containing food products caused by oil oxidation and the demand for sensory quality of oil, the development of methods the improvement oil quality is urgently required. This critical review presented a concise overview of the recent literature related to the inhibition ways of oil oxidation. The mechanism of different antioxidants and nanoparticle delivery systems on oil oxidation was also explored. The current review provides scientific findings on control strategies: (i) design oxidation quality assessment model; (ii) packaging by antioxidant coatings and eco-friendly film nanocomposite: ameliorate physicochemical properties; (iii) molecular investigations on inhibitory effects of selected antioxidants and underlying mechanisms; (iv) explore the interrelationship between the cysteine/citric acid and lipoxygenase pathway in the progression of oxidative/fragmentation degradation of unsaturated fatty acid chains.

Synthesized of a novel xanthate functionalized polypropylene as adsorbent for dispersive solid phase microextraction of caffeine using orbital shaker in mixed beverage matrices

A newly synthesized xanthate functionalized chlorinated polypropylene (PP-Xa) was used as adsorbent for the orbital shaker based on dispersive solid phase microextraction (OS-DSPME) of caffein from several tea, coffee, energy drink, coca-cola and chocolate samples using UV-vis. spectrophotometer. Synthesized PP-Xa was characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (¹H NMR). Various parameters like pH, PP-Xa amount, extraction time, type of eluent and its volume were optimized. Linear range, detection limit (LOD), limit of quantification (LOQ), relative standard deviation (RSD), recovery values, and enrichment factor (EF) were found 90-1000 μgL^-1, 27.3 µg L^-1, 90 µg L^-1, 1.9-2.6%, 98 ± 2%, and 167, respectively. Adsorption capacity of PP-Xa was found 271.9 mg g^-1. Standard addition and reference method were used for confirm the accuracy of present method.

Synergistic Effect of Two Plasticizers on Thermal Stability, Transparency, and Migration Resistance of Zinc Arginine Stabilized PVC

The effect of different plasticizers on thermal stability, transparency, and migration resistance of the PVC stabilized with zinc arginine [Zn(Arg)₂] was investigated. The thermal stability, migration resistance, and transparency of PVC with tributyl citrate (TBC) were better than PVC with dioctyl phthalate (DOP) characterized by oven aging method, migration test, and near infrared-visible-ultraviolet spectrophotometer. At the same time, the longer the carbon chain in citric acid esters, the better the thermal stability and transparency of PVC sample. The hydroxyl group in citric acid esters is helpful to improve the thermal stability of PVC samples. However, the elongation at break and T_g value of PVC containing DOP were very close to those of PVC containing TBC. The calculation results of Hansen solubility parameters also illustrated that DOP had better compatibility with PVC than TBC. Therefore, the excellent transparency and thermal stability of TBC plasticized PVC were attributed to the good compatibility between TBC and Zn(Arg)₂, which was verified by the solubility test. Lastly, the mixture of dioctyl terephthalate (DOTP) and TBC was used as plasticizers for Zn(Arg)₂ stabilized PVC. When the ratio of TBC and DOTP was 1:1, the transparency, thermal stability, and migration resistance of Zn(Arg)₂ stabilized PVC samples were better than those of PVC plasticized by DOP or TBC alone. The mechanism was that the compatibility between Zn(Arg)₂ and PVC was greatly improved by the synergetic effect of TBC and DOTP, resulting in the improvement of thermal stability, migration resistance, and transparency of PVC samples.

A review of multilayer and composite films and coatings for active biodegradable packaging

Active biodegradable packaging are being developed from biodegradable biopolymers which may solve the environmental problems caused by petroleum-based materials (plastics), as well as improving the shelf life, quality, nutritional profile, and safety of packaged food. The functional performance of active ingredients in biodegradable packaging can be extended by controlling their release profiles. This can be achieved by incorporating active ingredients in sandwich-structured packaging including multilayer and composite packaging. In multilayer materials, the release profile can be controlled by altering the type, structure, and thickness of the different layers. In composite materials, the release profile can be manipulated by altering the interactions of active ingredients with the surrounding biopolymer matrix. This article reviews the preparation, properties, and applications of multilayer and composite packaging for controlling the release of active ingredients. Besides, the basic theory of controlled release is also elaborated, including diffusion, swelling, and biodegradation. Mathematical models are presented to describe and predict the controlled release of active ingredients from thin films, which may help researchers design packaging materials with improved functional performance.

Synthesis of polystyrene-polyricinoleic acid copolymer containing silver nano particles for dispersive solid phase microextraction of molybdenum in water and food samples

Polystyrene-polyricinoleic acid copolymer containing silver nano particles (AgPSrici) was synthesized and used in separation of molybdenum from different aqueous and foodstuff samples during a dispersive-µ-solid phase extraction approach. The synthesized nano particles were verified using Fourier transform infraredspectroscopy. An electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry has been used for measurement of the studied ions. AgPSrici amount pH, sample volume, elution solvent kind, and the time of extraction were the effective parameters that were optimized by one-variable-at-one-time method. Analytical data of the method was calculated and limit of detection, relative standard deviation, limit of quantification were 0.022 µg L^-1, 2.9%, 150, and 0.066 µg L^-1, respectively. The synthesized adsorption capacity was obtained 170 mg g^-1.Accuracy of the method was studied by performing the method on certified reference materials and the presence of different interfering ions was studied. Molybdenum content of different water and foodstuffs was determined by the introduced method.

Physicochemical and Microstructural Characterization of Whey Protein Films Formed with Oxidized Ferulic/Tannic Acids

Protein-based biodegradable packaging films are of environmental significance. The effect of oxidized ferulic acid (OFA)/tannic acid (OTA) on the crosslinking and film-forming properties of whey protein isolate (WPI) was investigated. Both of the oxidized acids induced protein oxidation and promoted WPI crosslinking through the actions of quinone carbonyl and protein sulfhydryl, and amino groups. OTA enhanced the tensile strength (from 4.5 MPa to max 6.7 MPa) and stiffness (from 215 MPa to max 376 MPa) of the WPI film, whereas OFA significantly increased the elongation at break. The water absorption capability and heat resistance of the films were greatly improved by the addition of OTA. Due to the original color of OTA, the incorporation of OTA significantly reduced light transmittance of the WPI film (λ 200–600 nm) as well as the transparency, whereas no significant changes were induced by the OFA treatment. Higher concentrations of OTA reduced the in vitro digestibility of the WPI film, while the addition of OFA had no significant effect. Overall, these two oxidized polyphenols promoted the crosslinking of WPI and modified the film properties, with OTA showing an overall stronger efficacy than OFA due to more functional groups available.

Gold and Cobalt Oxide Nanoparticles Modified Poly-Propylene Poly-Ethylene Glycol Membranes in Poly (ε-Caprolactone) Conduits Enhance Nerve Regeneration in the Sciatic Nerve of Healthy Rats

Reconstruction of nerve defects is a clinical challenge. Autologous nerve grafts as the gold standard treatment may result in an incomplete restoration of extremity function. Biosynthetic nerve conduits are studied widely, but still have limitations. Here, we reconstructed a 10 mm sciatic nerve defect in healthy rats and analyzed nerve regeneration in poly (ε-caprolactone) (PCL) conduits longitudinally divided by gold (Au) and gold-cobalt oxide (AuCoO) nanoparticles embedded in poly-propylene poly-ethylene glycol (PPEG) membranes (AuPPEG or AuCoOPPEG) and compared it with unmodified PPEG-membrane and hollow PCL conduits. After 21 days, we detected significantly better axonal outgrowth, together with higher numbers of activated Schwann cells (ATF3-labelled) and higher HSP27 expression, in reconstructed sciatic nerve and in corresponding dorsal root ganglia (DRG) in the AuPPEG and AuCoOPPEG groups; whereas the number of apoptotic Schwann cells (cleaved caspase 3-labelled) was significantly lower. Furthermore, numbers of activated and apoptotic Schwann cells in the regenerative matrix correlated with axonal outgrowth, whereas HSP27 expression in the regenerative matrix and in DRGs did not show any correlation with axonal outgrowth. We conclude that gold and cobalt-oxide nanoparticle modified membranes in conduits improve axonal outgrowth and increase the regenerative performance of conduits after nerve reconstruction.

Self-Crosslinked Ellipsoidal Poly(Tannic Acid) Particles for Bio-Medical Applications

Self-crosslinking of Tannic acid (TA) was accomplished to obtain poly(tannic acid) (p(TA)) particles in single step, surfactant free media using sodium periodate (NaIO₄) as an oxidizing agent. Almost monodisperse p(TA) particles with 981 ± 76 nm sizes and −22 ± 4 mV zeta potential value with ellipsoidal shape was obtained. Only slight degradation of p(TA) particles with 6.8 ± 0.2% was observed at pH 7.4 in PBS up to 15 days because of the irreversible covalent formation between TA units, suggesting that hydrolytic degradation is independent from the used amounts of oxidation agents. p(TA) particles were found to be non-hemolytic up to 0.5 mg/mL concentration and found not to affect blood clotting mechanism up to 2 mg/mL concentration. Antioxidant activity of p(TA) particles was investigated by total phenol content (TPC), ferric reducing antioxidant potential (FRAP), trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC), total flavanoid content (TFC), and Fe (II) chelating activity. p(TA) particles showed strong antioxidant capability in comparison to TA molecules, except FRAP assay. The antibacterial activity of p(TA) particles was investigated by micro-dilution technique on E. coli as Gram‑negative and S. aureus as Gram-positive bacteria and found that p(TA) particles are more effective on S. aureus with over 50% inhibition at 20 mg/mL concentration attained.

Facile Synthesis of Polyethylene Glycol@Tannin-Amine Microsphere towards Cr(VI) Removal

Herein, a synthetic strategy for a rough microsphere Cr(VI)-adsorbent via the reaction of tannic acid (TA) and 1,6-hexanediamine (HA) and using polyethylene glycol (PEG) as surface modifier was presented. This adsorbent was characterized by a Fourier Transform Infrared spectrometer (FTIR), thermogravimetic analysis (TGA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), etc. Certain factors, including contact time, PEG@poly(tannin-1,6-hexanediamine) (PEG@PTHA) dosage, initial concentration, and experimental temperature affecting the Cr(VI) adsorption performance of adsorbent were explored. PEG@PTHA can adsorb Cr and the Cr(VI) was reduced up to Cr(III) due to the existence of phenolic hydroxyl groups. Its adsorption capacity can reach up to 300 mg/g within 10 min and approximately 100% removal percentage below the initial concentration of 100 mg/L. Its behavior matched well with the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. A PEG@PTHA adsorbent with maximum adsorption capacity (450 mg/g) has great prospects in Cr(VI)-sewage treatment.
