Behaviour of tungsten alloy with iron and nickel under repeated high temperature plasma pulses

Improving the Fracture Toughness and Ductility of Liquid-Phase Sintered WNiFe Tungsten Heavy Alloys by High-Temperature Annealing

Tungsten heavy alloys (WHAs) are candidates for use in fusion reactor divertors. Here, we characterize liquid-phase sintered WHAs with 90, 92.5, 95, and 97 (wt.%) tungsten (W), with a balance of a 0.7Ni-0.3Fe ductile phase. These WHAs show remarkable room temperature (RT) fracture toughness at the maximum load, K_Jm, ranging from ≈ 38 to 107 MPa√m, compared to a monolithic W toughness of ≈ 8 MPa√m. In most cases, the fracture of WHAs occurs through stable crack tearing. However, the 97W WHA has the lowest toughness and fracture elastically in all but the smallest specimens. As lower Ni contents are desirable for fusion application, we explore the potential for improving the ductility and K_Jm of WHAs using vacuum annealing at 1300 °C for 24 h. The microstructural observations reveal negligible changes in the WHA microstructure and constituent compositions. While annealing reduces the Vickers microhardness (HV), it does not significantly change the RT yield (σ_y) and ultimate (σ_u) strengths but results in beneficial increases in total elongation in the 95 and 97W WHAs by a factor of 2. RT tests on the precracked three-point-bend (3PB) bars show that annealing increases the K_Jm of these WHAs, and in the case of the 97W WHA, the increase is from 42 to 92%, depending on the size of the specimen. Toughening is due to enhanced crack tip process zone microcracking and dilatation.

Investigation of interfacial strength in nacre-mimicking tungsten heavy alloys for nuclear fusion applications

Tungsten heavy alloys have been proposed as plasma facing material components in nuclear fusion reactors and require experimental investigation in their confirmation. For this purpose, a 90W-7Ni-3Fe alloy has been selected and microstructurally manipulated to present a multiphase brick-and-mortar structure of W-phase 'bricks' surrounded by a ductile 'mortar'. This work draws inspiration from nature to artificially imitate the extraordinary combination of strength and stiffness exhibited by mollusks and produce a nacre-mimicking metal matrix composite capable of withstanding the extremely hostile environment of the reactor interior and maintaining structural integrity. The underlying mechanisms behind this integrity have been probed through high-resolution structural and chemical characterization techniques and have revealed chemically diffuse phase boundaries exhibiting unexpected lattice coherency. These features have been attributed to an increase in the energy required for interfacial decohesion in these systems and the simultaneous expression of high strength and toughness in tungsten heavy alloys.

W + Cu and W + Ni Composites and FGMs Prepared by Plasma Transferred Arc Cladding

Tungsten-based materials are the most prospective candidates for plasma-facing components of future fusion devices, such as DEMO. W-based composites and graded layers can serve as stress-relieving interlayers for the joints between plasma-facing armor and the cooling or structural parts. Coating/cladding techniques offer the advantages of eliminating the joining step and the ability to coat large areas, even on nonplanar shapes. In this work, W + Cu and W + Ni composites were prepared by pulsed plasma transferred arc (PTA) cladding on several different substrates. Optimization of the process was carried out with respect to powder mixture composition and process parameters like arc current, plasma gas composition, and traverse velocity. Dense claddings of several millimeters thickness and various W content were achieved. Moreover, multilayers with W content gradually varying from 47 to 92% were formed. The structure, compositional profiles, and thermal properties of the claddings were characterized.
