Cost of lost productivity from acute respiratory infections in South America

Objectives

To estimate the burden of permanent productivity losses caused by acute respiratory infections in South American countries in 2019.

Methods

Mortality data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 were analyzed to estimate the burden of disease attributable to acute respiratory infections. An approach based on the human capital method was used to estimate the cost of permanent productivity losses associated with respiratory diseases. To calculate this cost, the sum of the years of productive life lost for each death was multiplied by the proportion in the workforce and the employment rate, and then by the annual minimum wage or purchasing power parity in United States dollars (US$) for each country in the economically active age groups. Separate calculations were done for men and women.

Results

The total number of deaths from acute respiratory infections in 2019 was 30 684 and the years of productive life lost were 465 211 years. The total cost of permanent productivity loss was about US$ 835 million based on annual minimum wage and US$ 2 billion in purchasing power parity, representing 0.024% of the region's gross domestic product. The cost per death was US$ 33 226. The cost of productivity losses differed substantially between countries and by sex.

Conclusion

Acute respiratory infections impose a significant economic burden on South America in terms of health and productivity. Characterization of the economic costs of these infections can support governments in the allocation of resources to develop policies and interventions to reduce the burden of acute respiratory infections.

Rendimiento de escalas de trauma ISS, NISS y RTS en accidentes de tránsito para predecir mortalidad en un hospital de alta complejidad

Introducción. La población mundial crece y con ello los accidentes de tránsito, incrementando la morbimortalidad. La combinación de factores clínicos y paraclínicos mediante las escalas de trauma impacta en los desenlaces al permitir tomar acciones oportunas. Métodos. Estudio de corte transversal en el que se incluyeron pacientes con lesiones por colisión en accidentes de tránsito, atendidos entre 2017 y 2018, en urgencias del Hospital Universitario San José de Popayán, Colombia, un hospital de alta complejidad. Se recolectaron variables sociodemográficas y biológicas y se aplicaron tres escalas de trauma, Revised Trauma Score, Injury Severity Score y New Injury Severity Score. Posteriormente, se evaluó su rendimiento para predecir mortalidad. Resultados. Se atendieron en el servicio de urgencias 650 pacientes con lesiones en accidentes de tránsito y se presentaron 16 muertes. Al evaluar el rendimiento de las escalas de trauma se encontró que la sensibilidad para mortalidad varía entre el 75 % para Revised Trauma Score y el 93,8 % para Injury Severity Score y New Injury Severity Score, con una especificidad que varía entre 89,1 % y 96,8 %. Se identificó que la mejor razón de verosimilitud positiva fue para Revised Trauma Score, mientras que la mejor razón de verosimilitud negativa fue para Injury Severity Score y New Injury Severity Score. Conclusiones. Los resultados evidencian un adecuado rendimiento de las escalas de trauma evaluadas para predecir mortalidad. La escala que presentó mejor rendimiento fue Injury Severity Score por su sensibilidad, especificidad y razón de verosimilitud positiva.

Pérdidas laborales asociadas a la mortalidad por lesiones en accidentes de tránsito: estimaciones provinciales de ecuador

Objetivo Estimar los años potenciales de vida perdidos (APVP) y los años potenciales de vida laboral perdidos (APVLP) en la población en edad laboral asociados a los fallecimientos prematuros por lesiones en accidentes de tránsito para las 24 provincias de Ecuador. Métodos Se emplearon fuentes de información estadística (registro de defunciones CIE-10 V01 a V89 y censo poblacional) para estimar los APVP y APVLP en edades laborales (15 a 64 años de edad) por sexo y provincias. Además, se calcularon la tasa cruda y específica (edades laborales) y la edad media (IC95%). Resultados La mayoría de las muertes en edad laboral por lesiones en accidentes tránsito estuvo en hombres con edades jóvenes y en las provincias de las regiones amazónica (Orellana y Sucumbíos) y la costa del Pacífico del país (Los Ríos). El número de APVLP se estima en 69 314 años, mientras que los APVP asciende a 94 567 años, las provincias de Guayas y Pichincha acumulan la mayor cantidad de APVP y APVLP. Conclusiones Los años perdidos estimados por muertes prematuras por esta causa representan un problema de salud pública y un importante coste laboral para el desarrollo del país. Los resultados encontrados refuerzan la necesidad de intensificar la mejora de programas y actuaciones públicas en seguridad vial.

Crisis, suicide and labour productivity losses in Spain

OBJECTIVES

Suicide became the first cause of death between the ages of 15 and 44 in Spain in the year 2013. Moreover, the suicide rate in Spain went up by more than 9 % with respect to the previous year. This increase could be related to the serious economic recession that Spain has been experiencing in recent years. In this sense, there is a lack of evidence to help assess to what extent these suicides have a social cost in terms of losses in human capital. Firstly, this article examines the relationship between the variables related to the economic cycle and the suicide rates in the 17 Spanish regions. Secondly, an estimate is made of the losses in labour productivity owing to these suicides.

METHODOLOGY

In this article, panel data models are used to consider different variables related to the economic cycle. Demographic variables and the suicide rates for regions across Spain from 2002 to 2013 also come into play. The present and future production costs owing to premature death from suicide are calculated using a human capital model. These costs are valued from the gross salary that an individual no longer receives in the future at the very moment he or she leaves the labour market.

RESULTS

The results provide a strong indication that a decrease in economic growth and an increase in unemployment negatively affect suicide rates. Due to suicide, 38,038 potential years of working life were lost in 2013. This has an estimated cost of over 565 million euros.

CONCLUSIONS

The economic crisis endured by Spain in recent years has played a role in the higher suicide rates one can observe from the data in official statistics. From a social perspective, suicide is a public health problem with far-reaching consequences.
