Abstract
This systematic review aimed to assess the effects of upper gastrointestinal (UGI) dysmotility on outcomes of surgical treatment of colonic inertia (CI). This PRISMA-compliant systematic review and meta-analysis searched PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, and clinicaltrials.gov through October 2023 for studies that assessed outcomes of CI patients who underwent colectomy while putting data on UGI motility in context. The primary outcome was postoperative persistence or recurrence of constipation. Secondary outcomes were postoperative complications, continence, and quality of life (QoL) improvements. The revised tool to assess the risk of bias in nonrandomized studies of interventions was used to assess the risk of bias, and the certainty of evidence was graded using the GRADE approach. Eight studies (1991 to 2013) included data on UGI evaluation of CI patients; 12.8 to 24.3% were tested for concomitant GI dysmotility. High rates of motility abnormalities were in the small bowel (31.4%), stomach (34.1%), and esophagus (48.5%). Patients with UGI dysmotility and CI were more likely to experience constipation recurrence (OR: 10.71, 95% CI: 2.17; 52.87, P =0.004) and less likely to have postoperative QoL improvements (OR: 0.16, 95% CI: 0.04; 0.65, P =0.010) compared with patients with CI and no abnormal UGI testing. There were no differences in postoperative complications (OR: 1.59, 95% CI: 0.64; 4.267, P =0.542) or continence (OR: 0.29, 95% CI: 0.06; 1.47, P =0.0136) rates. Large subsets of CI patients with concomitant UGI dysmotility may be preoperatively underdiagnosed. UGI dysmotility may be associated with a higher risk of postoperative recurrence of constipation and suboptimal improvements in QoL. We recommend routine UGI evaluation before surgery for CI.

Abstract
Different dietary fibers have distinct structures, leading to significant variations in their laxative effects. To explore how these structural differences impact constipation intervention, a 14-day study was conducted on loperamide-induced constipated mice using five dietary fibers: soluble dietary fiber from steamed sweet potato (SDF-S), oat β-glucan (OB), polydextrose (PD), arabinogalactan (AG), and inulin (IN). The results showed that four fibers, excluding PD, significantly improved gastrointestinal (GI) transit rate (p < 0.05), although PD had the highest fecal moisture, it was significantly different from the lowest IN (p < 0.05). AG and IN resulted in higher 6 h fecal weights compared to other fibers. SDF-S and OB were more effective in modulating serum levels of gastrointestinal hormones. The different monosaccharide compositions and glycosidic bonds of these fibers led to distinct changes in gut microbiota composition and SCFA profiles. Galactose and arabinose in AG were linked to increased abundance of Lachnospiraceae_UCG-006, Bacteroides, and Odoribacter, promoting butyrate fermentation, which is positively correlated with GI transit rate. Glucose in SDF-S, OB, and PD favored acetate fermentation positively correlated with fecal moisture. Fructose in IN encouraged the proliferation of Muribaculaceae_unclassified and Ruminococcus, associated with butyrate fermentation and increased 6 h stool weight, respectively. The β-glycosidic bonds in OB may lead to high butyrate production through the selective proliferation of Lachnospiraceae_unclassified. Minor components like fucose, rhamnose, and ribose were positively correlated with the abundance of Oscillospiraceae_unclassified, Anaerotignum, and Lachnospiraceae_unclassified. In conclusion, the unique monosaccharide compositions and glycosidic bond differences in dietary fibers selectively promote the proliferation of fiber-degrading and butyrate-producing bacteria, resulting in varied effects on constipation relief.

Abstract
Opioid-induced constipation (OIC) is a rising problem due to the progressive increase in opioid prescription. In contrast to functional constipation, opioid-induced constipation is not a functional gut disorder but a side effect of opioid use. Opioids produce constipation due to a decrease in gastrointestinal motility and a reduction in gastrointestinal secretions. The treatment of OIC focuses on three basic pillars: optimizing opioid drug indication, preventing constipation onset, and treating constipation should it develop. As with any other cause of constipation, lifestyle adjustments and laxatives should be the first-line option in the pharmacological management of OIC. Osmotic laxatives such as polyethylene glycol (PEG) are the agents of choice. PEG is inert and is neither fermented nor absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract. Furthermore, it has broad clinical applicability due to its favourable safety profile. If first-line treatments fail, peripheral μ-opioid receptor antagonists (PAMORA) are the drugs of choice. They reduce the peripheral effects of OIC with a minimal potential to diminish analgesia or induce a centrally mediated withdrawal syndrome. Different PAMORA are available in the market both for oral and subcutaneous administration, with demonstrated efficacy for the management of OIC in different clinical trials.

Abstract
Background/Aims Although guidelines exist regarding the evaluation and management of patients with chronic constipation (CC), little is known about real-world clinical practice patterns. This study aimed to evaluate the various practices used to manage CC patients in various clinical settings in South Korea. Methods A nationwide web-based survey was conducted, randomly selecting gastroenterologists and non-gastroenterologists. The 25-item questionnaire included physicians' perceptions and practices regarding the available options for diagnosing and managing CC patients in Korea. Results The study participants comprised 193 physicians (86 gastroenterologists, 44.6%) involved in the clinical management of CC patients. The mean clinical experience was 12 years. Only 21 of 193 respondents (10.9%) used the Rome criteria when diagnosing CC. The Bristol Stool Form Scale was used by 29% of the respondents (56/193), while the digital rectal examination was performed by 11.9% of the respondents (23/193). Laboratory testing and colonoscopies were performed more frequently by gastroenterologists than by non-gastroenterologists (both p=0.001). Physiologic testing was used more frequently by gastroenterologists (p=0.046), physicians at teaching hospitals, and physicians with clinical experience ≤10 years (both p<0.05). There were also significant differences in the preference for laxatives depending on the type of hospital. Conclusions There were discrepancies in the diagnosis and management of CC patients depending on the clinical setting. The utilization rates of the Bristol Stool Form Scale and digital rectal examination by physicians are low in real-world clinical practice. These results imply the need for better and more practical training of physicians in the assessment and management of CC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Constipation is a common adverse effect of antipsychotics, but little investigation has been conducted. We aimed to address the factors associated with the initiation of laxative use in the same patients with schizophrenia over a 20-year period. METHODS We enrolled patients with schizophrenia attending each hospital (n = 14) from April 1, 2021, and retrospectively examined all prescriptions as of April 1, 2016, 2011, 2006, and 2001, every 5 years starting in 2021, for this population. 716 participants with complete data were included in the analysis. The Cochran Q test followed by Bonferroni correction and the Cochran-Armitage trend test were used to determine the differences and trends of the frequency of each laxative. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to assess the factors on the initiation of laxative use over a 20-year period. RESULTS Of the patients, 25.1% were treated with laxatives in 2001, and 34.1% were treated in 2021. The numbers of patients treated with any laxatives significantly differed over the 20-year period, with a significant increasing trend. In all laxatives, the numbers of patients treated with magnesium oxide, lubiprostone and elobixibat differed with a significant increasing trend. Female sex, age, the total DZP equivalent dose, and the doses of levomepromazine maleate, olanzapine, quetiapine, zotepine, lithium, and carbamazepine in 2021 were significant factors associated with the initiation of laxative use over the 20-year period. CONCLUSIONS Careful monitoring is needed for patients treated with levomepromazine maleate, olanzapine, quetiapine and zotepine. Optimizing prescriptions according to treatment guidelines could reduce antipsychotic-induced constipation.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Chronic constipation is a frequent symptom encountered in the daily clinical practice. The treatment of this condition mainly relies on the use of laxatives. However, patients' satisfaction with this approach is limited, and alternative measures are often added to the treatment. Among these, particularly frequent worldwide is the use of enemas, even though literature data on its scientific validity are scarce. AREAS COVERED In this article, by an extensive online search of Medline (through PubMed), Scopus, Cochrane CENTRAL, EMBASE, and the Science Citation Index, the available literature data on the use of enemas in adult patients with chronic constipation, also in the perspective of available guidelines on treatment of this pathological condition, were analyzed. EXPERT OPINION Although the use of enemas remains a frequently employed method and it is considered as useful by many physicians as an adjunctive support for the treatment of chronic constipation in adults, this practice is not substantiated by rigorous scientific data, and some studies are available only for specific instances (fecal impaction, transanal irrigation). Thus, waiting for more robust scientific data, enemas treatment should be carried out on an individual patient's basis, according to the experience of the caring physicians.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Constipation is a common condition. Although numerous articles emphasise the importance of conservative interventions, none have set out a complete educational programme. AIMS To describe the results of an evidence-based, nurse-led educational intervention for functional constipation in adults. METHODS A retrospective study of patient records with an analysis of Wexner constipation scores and Bristol stool charts was carried out before and after a nurse-led educational programme on nutrition and bowel habits. FINDINGS Twenty-nine patients were enrolled (19 women and 10 men), with a median age of 61 (53-71) years, a mean BMI of 24.4±3.88 kg/m2 and comparable baseline Wexner and Bristol scores. A statistically significant improvement in Wexner scores (P<0.001) and a clinically relevant but not statistically significant (P=0.682) improvement in Bristol scores were observed. CONCLUSION The results suggest this investigation should be repeated on a larger scale. An educational intervention could be included in all consultations on any issue that could affect bowel activity.

Abstract
Background and Aim: Fonte Essenziale® water is a bicarbonate-sulfate-calcium-magnesium water, low in sodium, recognized by the Italian health care system in hydropinotherapy and hepatobiliary dyspepsia therapy. We wanted to explore its effects on the gut-liver axis and microbiota in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease patients. Patients and Methods: We considered enrollment for 70 patients, of which four were excluded. We finally enrolled 55 patients with ultrasound-documented steatosis (SPs+) and 11 patients without it (SPs-). They then drank 400 ml of water for 6 months in the morning on an empty stomach. Routine hematochemical and metabolic parameters, oxidative stress parameters, gastrointestinal hormone levels, and fecal parameters of the gut microbiota were evaluated at three different assessment times, at baseline (T0), after 6 months (T6), and after a further 6 months of water washout (T12). We lost, in follow-up, 4 (T6) and 22 (T12) patients. Results: Between T0-T6, we observed a significant Futuin A and Selenoprotein A decrease and a GLP-1 and PYY increase in SPs+ and the same for Futuin A and GLP-1 in SPs-. Effects were lost at T12. In SPs+, between T0-T12 and T6-12, a significant reduction in Blautia was observed; between T0-T12, a reduction of Collinsella unc. was observed; and between T0-T12 and T6-12, an increase in Subdoligranulum and Dorea was observed. None of the bacterial strains we analyzed varied significantly in the SPs- population. Conclusion: These results indicate beneficial effects of water on gastrointestinal hormones and hence on the gut-liver axis in the period in which subjects drank water both in SPs- and in SPs+.

Abstract
Chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) is a common functional bowel disorder characterized by difficult, infrequent, and/or incomplete defecation. It has a great impact on the quality of life and on health care system and represents a heavy economic burden. The diagnosis is based on symptoms, classified by the Rome IV criteria. The aim of this review was to evaluate the current therapeutic guidelines for adult CIC and highlight new emerging treatments. In detail, European, French, Spanish and Korean guidelines have been identified and compared. Osmotic laxatives, and in particular polyethylene glycol, represent the first-line therapeutic approach. Stimulant laxatives are recommended as a second-line therapy. Pelvic floor rehabilitation is recommended in patients with ano-rectal dyssynergia. In patients who fail to improve with pharmacological therapies sacral nerve stimulation is considered as last chance before surgery. Surgical approach has however limited indications in selected cases. Inertia coli refractory to any approach and obstructed defecation are two subtypes which can benefit from surgery. Among emerging agents, prucalopride, a prokinetic agent, is recommended as a second-line treatment in refractory CIC patients. In addition, the secretagogues linaclotide and plecanatide and the bile acid transported inhibitor elobixibat can be effective in patients not responsive to a second-line therapeutic regimen, although they are not worldwide commercially available.

Abstract
YH12852, a novel, highly selective 5-hydroxytryptamine 4 (5-HT4 ) receptor agonist, is currently under development to treat patients with functional constipation. In this study, we aimed to develop a pharmacokinetic (PK)-pharmacodynamic (PD) model that adequately described the time courses of the plasma concentrations of YH12852 and its prokinetic effect as assessed by the Gastric Emptying Breath Test (GEBT) and to predict the prokinetic effect of YH12852 at higher doses through PD simulation. We used the plasma concentrations of YH12852 from patients with functional constipation and healthy subjects and the GEBT results from healthy subjects obtained from a phase I/IIa trial. The PK-PD modeling and covariate analysis were performed using NONMEM software. The prokinetic effect of YH12852 was described using a semimechanistic multicompartment PD model and an empirical model by Ghoos et al. A two-compartment model with first-order absorption adequately described the observed concentration-time profiles of YH12852. The semimechanistic multicompartment PD model and the revised Ghoos model with two slope parameters adequately described the observed kPCDt (the percent dose of 13 C excreted in the exhaled air at minute t after completing the test meal, multiplied by 1000) values. YH12852 accelerated gastric emptying even at low doses of 0.05-0.1 mg, and its prokinetic effect was greater in subjects suffering from more severe functional constipation. The PD simulation experiments revealed that the change from baseline in the half time for gastric emptying induced by YH12852 increased in a dose-dependent manner at 0.05-5 mg although the results at doses >0.1 mg were extrapolated. We also showed that the empirical Ghoos model is a special case of the general semimechanistic multicompartment PD model for gastric emptying.

Abstract
Chronic constipation is associated with various comorbidities and reduced quality of life. Current solutions, either pharmacological or invasive, show limited efficacy. Manual colon-specific massage is a well-established intervention to treat chronic constipation, but it should be applied daily. MOWOOT automatically provides intermittent colonic exo-peristalsis (ICE) treatment like that in manual massage.

Abstract
Prucalopride is a third-generation, highly selective 5-hydroxytryptamine 4 (5-HT4) receptor agonist. Many recent studies indicate prucalopride may play an important role in various motility disorders. The aim of this study was to investigate safety and patient selection considerations when using prucalopride as gastroparesis and chronic constipation treatment. We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Central Register and ClinicalTrials.gov, and we reviewed all studies that evaluated prucalopride for the treatment of gastroparesis and chronic idiopathic constipation in adults. Prucalopride is an effective and safe option based on all the studies currently conducted. Thus, it may be the first-line treatment in the future. Prucalopride has the potential to be useful in the treatment of functional constipation and other forms of gastrointestinal diseases (eg, gastroparesis). Through the research on this potential, prucalopride is expected to be a useful and versatile option for treating gastrointestinal diseases in the future.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic constipation is a common, heterogeneous disorder with multiple symptoms and pathophysiological mechanisms. Patients are often referred to a gastroenterology provider after laxatives fail. However, there is limited knowledge of the spectrum and management of constipation disorders. AIM To discuss the latest understanding of the spectrum of constipation disorders, tools for identifying a pathophysiologic-based diagnosis in the specialist setting, treatment options and the patient's perspective of constipation. METHODS Literature searches were conducted using PubMed for constipation diagnostic criteria, diagnostic tools and approved treatments. The authors provided insight from their own practices. RESULTS Clinical assessment, stool diaries and Rome IV diagnostic criteria can facilitate diagnosis, evaluate severity and distinguish between IBS with constipation, chronic idiopathic constipation and dyssynergic defecation. Novel smartphone applications can help track constipation symptoms. Rectal examinations, anorectal manometry and balloon expulsion, assessments of neuromuscular function with colonic transit time and colonic manometry can provide mechanistic understanding of underlying pathophysiology. Treatments include lifestyle and diet changes, biofeedback therapy and pharmacological agents. Several classes of laxatives, as well as prokinetic and prosecretory agents, are available; here we describe their mechanisms of action, efficacy and side effects. CONCLUSIONS Constipation includes multiple overlapping subtypes identifiable using detailed history, current diagnostic tools and smartphone applications. Recognition of individual subtype(s) could pave the way for optimal, evidence-based treatments by a gastroenterology provider.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Constipation is a common problem in gastroenterological practice. The prevalence of constipation is about 16%. Constipation can be primary or secondary. SUMMARY The diagnostic and therapeutic approach to patients with constipation begins with a detailed history and physical examination. In selected cases, the use of additional diagnostic procedures is very important. This includes the use of laboratory, endoscopic, and radiological examinations, as well as advanced physiological testing (anorectal manometry, balloon expulsion test, colonic transit studies, and defecography). Constipation therapy can be both nonoperative and operative. Nonoperative therapy includes the application of a lifestyle measures, pharmacotherapy and biofeedback therapy. Key Messages: Two key things when taking a medical history and physical examination are to rule out the existence of alarm symptoms/signs and to rule out secondary constipation (primarily drug-induced). Therapy begins with lifestyle modification, and in case of failure, bulk or osmotic laxatives are used. In case of failure, the use of lubiprostone is indicated, as well as linaclotide. Surgical treatment of constipation is reserved for cases of refractory constipation, with delayed intestinal transit.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Chronic constipation is a common disorder with a reported prevalence ranging from 3% to 27% in the general population. Several management strategies, including diagnostic tests, empiric treatments, and specific treatments, have been developed. Our aim was to develop European guidelines for the clinical management of constipation. DESIGN After a thorough review of the literature by experts in relevant fields, including gastroenterologists, surgeons, general practitioners, radiologists, and experts in gastrointestinal motility testing from various European countries, a Delphi consensus process was used to produce statements and practical algorithms for the management of chronic constipation. KEY RESULTS Seventy-three final statements were agreed upon after the Delphi process. The level of evidence for most statements was low or very low. A high level of evidence was agreed only for anorectal manometry as a comprehensive evaluation of anorectal function and for treatment with osmotic laxatives, especially polyethylene glycol, the prokinetic drug prucalopride, secretagogues, such as linaclotide and lubiprostone and PAMORAs for the treatment of opioid-induced constipation. However, the level of agreement between the authors was good for most statements (80% or more of the authors). The greatest disagreement was related to the surgical management of constipation. CONCLUSIONS AND INFERENCES European guidelines on chronic constipation, with recommendations and algorithms, were developed by experts. Despite the high level of agreement between the different experts, the level of scientific evidence for most recommendations was low, highlighting the need for future research to increase the evidence and improve treatment outcomes in these patients.

Abstract
The objectives of the present study were to evaluate the bioequivalence of 2 tablet formulations of prucalopride, generic and branded, and to investigate relevant pharmacokinetic and safety profiles. This study was designed as a randomized, open-label, fasting, single-dose, crossover, and dual-period trial. After overnight fasting, 12 subjects were given prucalopride tablets via oral administration, and blood specimens were obtained up to 96 hours after dosing. Prucalopride concentrations in plasma were measured using ultraprecision liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry followed by calculation of pharmacokinetic parameters. The safety of prucalopride was assessed throughout the study. The pharmacokinetics of prucalopride can be defined as a 2-compartment model with a long elimination phase. No significant differences were observed between the pharmacokinetic profiles of the generic and branded prucalopride tablets. Bioequivalence was evaluated using 90%CIs for the ratio test/reference of log area under the concentration-time curve over 96 hours, log area under the concentration-time curve to infinity, and log peak concentration from generic and branded tablets, which were 100.06-109.94%, 100.63-110.32%, and 95.84-113.08%, respectively. During administration of the medication, there were 18 adverse events in 6 subjects in the test formulation group and 19 cases of adverse events in 6 subjects in the reference formulation group (P > .05). No severe adverse effects were detected. These results suggest that generic and branded prucalopride tablets are bioequivalent and show similar safety profiles.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There has been some controversy regarding the efficacy of sacral nerve stimulation (SNS) for the treatment of chronic constipation, due to less positive outcomes and concerns about cost-effectiveness in the long term. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the long-term outcomes of SNS in patients with chronic constipation. METHODS A retrospective study was conducted on patients who had SNS for chronic constipation in 2008-2017 at our institution. Clinical factors, profile of constipation, physiology studies, and patient satisfaction with SNS therapy were investigated during a follow-up period up to 10 years after the implantation. RESULTS Twenty-nine patients [86% female, median age 49 years (range 17-86)] were tested for SNS, and 24 received implants after a positive test phase [median 47 days (range 21-56 days)]. There were 27 bilateral and 2 unilateral implants, in S3 or S4 depending on best response. Mean follow-up was 59 months. Efficacy was considered as a score > 5 (on a scale of 1-10) in general symptom improvement. Nine (37.9%) implanted patients had a satisfaction score > 5. In 6 cases (25%), patient satisfaction was higher than 9. Due to the small sample size, there were no statistically significant variables considered as predictors of response. CONCLUSIONS Our results agree with current studies which describe around a 30% response of SNS for refractory constipation. However, there is a small group of patients highly satisfied with SNS therapy. More studies are needed to better understand this profile and optimize outcomes.

Abstract
Psyllium and lactitol have been reported to increase fecal volume, moisture content and bowel movement frequency (BMF). However, the benefits of their combined use on constipation has not been examined. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a 4-week intervention with lactitol and/or psyllium on bowel function in constipated volunteers. Adults (N = 172) who were diagnosed with functional constipation per Rome III criteria were randomized to four treatment groups: 10 g lactitol, 3.5 g psyllium, a combination of 10 g lactitol and 3.5 g psyllium, or placebo. The primary endpoint was change in BMF from Day 0 to 28 as compared to placebo. Secondary endpoints were assessed by inventories, including stool consistency, patient assessment of constipation symptoms and quality of life, relief of constipation, 24-h food recall, physical activity, product satisfaction and adverse events (AE). BMF increased by 3.0 BMs with lactitol, by 2.9 with psyllium, and by 3.1 with the combination, but was not different from placebo (3.7 BMs). Other clinical endpoints were similar between treatments. No serious AEs were reported. In conclusion, this study showed a similar effect on relief of constipation in all treatment groups. The treatments that were administered to the volunteers were well tolerated.

Abstract
Prucalopride is a prokinetic drug, that has been commercially available in recent years for the treatment of chronically constipated patients. In this update of a previous 2016 article, we reviewed the more recent data supporting its role in the treatment of constipation and constipation-associated conditions. Areas covered: We carried out an extensive literature review on the effects of prucalopride for the years 2012-2018 by means of scientific databases and manual research. More evidence was found on its possible therapeutic role in conditions in which constipation plays a role as an associated symptom, such as opioid-induced constipation, constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome, post-operative ileus, colonic diverticular disease, drug-related constipation, and chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction. Expert opinion: Based on the added literature evidence, we feel that prucalopride is an effective, although expensive, drug for the treatment of primary and secondary forms of constipation, and of other clinical conditions associated with constipation.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Constipation is one of the most common gastrointestinal symptoms in postpartum mothers. The choice of treatments for postpartum constipation remains a challenging clinical problem. Chinese herbal medicine has become increasingly popular as an alternative therapy for constipation. This systematic review aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Chinese herbal medicine for postpartum constipation. METHODS AND ANALYSIS We will search PubMed (1946 to present), EMBASE (1974 to present), Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (all years), Web of Science (1900 to present), Chinese Biomedical Literatures Database (1978 to present), China National Knowledge Infrastructure (1979 to present) and WANFANG data (1998 to present) to identify any eligible study. No restriction will be put on the language, publication date or status of the study. The primary outcome will be the spontaneous bowel movement. Secondary outcomes will be stool consistency, quality of life, transit time, relief of constipation symptoms and adverse events. We will perform the meta-analysis when more than one trial examines the same intervention and outcomes with comparable methods in similar populations. If the heterogeneity is not significant statistically (p>0.10 or I2<50%), the fixed-effect model will be built to estimate the overall intervention effects. Otherwise, the random-effect model will be used to provide more conservative results. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION No ethical issues are foreseen because no primary data will be collected. The results will be published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER CRD42018093741.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Significant advances have been made in the knowledge and understanding of the epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of chronic constipation, since the publication of the 2011 guidelines on chronic constipation diagnosis and treatment in Mexico from the Asociación Mexicana de Gastroenterología. AIMS To present a consensus review of the current state of knowledge about chronic constipation, providing updated information and integrating the new scientific evidence. METHODS Three general coordinators reviewed the literature published within the time frame of January 2011 and January 2017. From that information, 62 initial statements were formulated and then sent to 12 national experts for their revision. The statements were voted upon, using the Delphi system in 3 voting rounds (2 electronic and one face-to-face). The statements were classified through the GRADE system and those that reached agreement >75% were included in the consensus. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS The present consensus is made up of 42 final statements that provide updated knowledge, supplementing the information that had not been included in the previous guidelines. The strength of recommendation and quality (level) of evidence were established for each statement. The current definitions of chronic constipation, functional constipation, and opioid-induced constipation are given, and diagnostic strategies based on the available diagnostic methods are described. The consensus treatment recommendations were established from evidence on the roles of diet and exercise, fiber, laxatives, new drugs (such as prucalopride, lubiprostone, linaclotide, plecanatide), biofeedback therapy, and surgery.
