Internet-based Surveillance Systems and Infectious Diseases Prediction: An Updated Review of the Last 10 Years and Lessons from the COVID-19 Pandemic

The last decade has seen major advances and growth in internet-based surveillance for infectious diseases through advanced computational capacity, growing adoption of smart devices, increased availability of Artificial Intelligence (AI), alongside environmental pressures including climate and land use change contributing to increased threat and spread of pandemics and emerging infectious diseases. With the increasing burden of infectious diseases and the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for developing novel technologies and integrating internet-based data approaches to improving infectious disease surveillance is greater than ever. In this systematic review, we searched the scientific literature for research on internet-based or digital surveillance for influenza, dengue fever and COVID-19 from 2013 to 2023. We have provided an overview of recent internet-based surveillance research for emerging infectious diseases (EID), describing changes in the digital landscape, with recommendations for future research directed at public health policymakers, healthcare providers, and government health departments to enhance traditional surveillance for detecting, monitoring, reporting, and responding to influenza, dengue, and COVID-19.

The effect of public health interventions on COVID-19 incidence in Queensland, Australia: a spatial cluster analysis

BACKGROUND

Using SaTScan™ Geographical Information Systems (GIS), spatial cluster analysis was used to examine spatial trends and identify high-risk clusters of Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) incidence in response to changing levels of public health intervention phases including international and state border closures, statewide vaccination coverage, and masking requirements.

METHODS

Changes in COVID-19 incidence were mapped at the statistical area 2 (SA2) level using a GIS and spatial cluster analysis was performed using SaTScan™ to identify most-likely clusters (MLCs) during intervention phases.

RESULTS

Over the study period, significant high-risk clusters were identified in Brisbane city (relative risk = 30.83), the southeast region (RR = 1.71) and moving to Far North Queensland (FNQ) (RR = 2.64). For masking levels, cluster locations were similar, with MLC in phase 1 in the southeast region (RR = 2.56) spreading to FNQ in phase 2 (RR = 2.22) and phase 3 (RR = 2.64). All p values <.0001.

CONCLUSIONS

Movement restrictions in the form of state and international border closures were highly effective in delaying the introduction of COVID-19 into Queensland, with very low levels of transmission prior to border reopening while mandatory masking may have played a role in decreasing transmission through behavioural changes. Early clusters were in highly populated regions, as restrictions eased clusters were identified in regions more likely to be rural or remote, with higher numbers of Indigenous people, lower vaccination coverage or lower socioeconomic status.

LSTM-Powered COVID-19 prediction in central Thailand incorporating meteorological and particulate matter data with a multi-feature selection approach

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted public health and necessitated urgent actions to mitigate its spread. Monitoring and predicting the outbreak's progression have become vital to devise effective strategies and allocate resources efficiently. This study presents a novel approach utilizing Multivariate Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) to analyze and predict COVID-19 trends in Central Thailand, particularly emphasizing the multi-feature selection process. To consider a comprehensive view of the pandemic's dynamics, our research dataset encompasses epidemiological, meteorological, and particulate matter features, which were gathered from reliable sources. We propose a multi-feature selection technique to identify the most relevant and influential features that significantly impact the spread of COVID-19 in the region to enhance the model's performance. Our results highlight that relative humidity is the key factor driving COVID-19 transmission in Central Thailand. The proposed multi-feature selection technique significantly improves the model's accuracy, ensuring that only the most informative variables contribute to the predictions, avoiding the potential noise or redundancy from less relevant features. The proposed LSTM model demonstrates its capability to forecast COVID-19 cases, facilitating informed decision-making for public health authorities and policymakers.

LSTM algorithm optimization for COVID-19 prediction model

The development of predictive models for infectious diseases, specifically COVID-19, is an important step in early control efforts to reduce the mortality rate. However, traditional time series prediction models used to analyze the disease spread trends often encounter challenges related to accuracy, necessitating the need to develop prediction models with enhanced accuracy. Therefore, this research aimed to develop a prediction model based on the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks to better predict the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases. The proposed optimized LSTM (popLSTM) model was compared with Basic LSTM and improved MinMaxScaler developed earlier using COVID-19 dataset taken from previous research. The dataset was collected from four countries with a high daily increase in confirmed cases, including Hong Kong, South Korea, Italy, and Indonesia. The results showed significantly improved accuracy in the optimized model compared to the previous research methods. The contributions of popLSTM included 1) Incorporating the output results on the output gate to effectively filter more detailed information compared to the previous model, and 2) Reducing the error value by considering the hidden state on the output gate to improve accuracy. popLSTM in this experiment exhibited a significant 4% increase in accuracy.
