Abstract
This study examined the number of contractions required for an isometric plantar flexion familiarization. Twenty-six males were separated into two independent Groups: Group A: where five contractions were initiated on the dominant limb (right) followed by the contralateral limb; and Group B, initiated by the non-dominant limb (left) followed by the dominant limb. Participants carried out a 5-s maximum voluntary contraction (MVC), with an interpolated twitch administered to the tibial nerve. In Group A, both the dominant and non-dominant limbs required two contractions for familiarization, whereas in Group B, the dominant limb required two contractions, and the non-dominant limb required three (p < 0.05). A strong relationship between MVC and voluntary activation (VA) was observed in Group A for the D (r = 0.91, p < 0.05) and in Group B for the ND limb (r = 0.99, p < 0.05). The results demonstrated evidence of cross-limb transfer from the dominant to the non-dominant limb (p < 0.05). This phenomenon implicates central involvement, substantiated by VA responses that mirror the changes in MVC. Practitioners and researchers should consider the impact of cross-limb transfer during a single familiarization session when assessing strength to avoid overestimation of the gains. Future cross-education/cross-limb transfer studies could investigate the central mechanisms involved during familiarization.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Accurate measurements of muscular performance are important for diagnostics, for example during rehabilitation after traumatic injuries but also in competitive sports. For these purposes, dynamometric devices are widely used and considered the gold standard for muscle strength testing. However, few previous studies have tested the reproducibility of peak moment (PM) at velocities close to the maximum device capability, and in general, reproducibility results cannot be transferred to other devices or test protocols. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reproducibility of PM for different isometric and isokinetic knee extension exercises using the IsoMed 2000. METHODS Thirty subjects volunteered in three repeated test sessions, including isometric knee extension (100° and 140° knee angle) and isokinetic knee extension (30°/s and 400°/s). Statistical analysis for comparison of sessions two and three included paired sample t-test, calculation of intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and standard error of measurement (SEM). Additionally, Bland Altman statistics and corresponding plots were created. RESULTS A significant difference between sessions in PM was found for isometric knee extension in one leg (140° left). Reproducibility was high for all conditions with ICC ranging from 0.964 to 0.988 and SEM in the range of 7.6 to 10.5 Nm. Bland Altman statistics revealed a bias between - 7.3 and 0.7 Nm. CONCLUSIONS Reproducibility of PM using the IsoMed 2000 was good after an initial familiarization trial with high values of relative reproducibility. Absolute reproducibility can be interpreted as appropriate for most common practical applications.

Abstract
Introduction: Whether high-intensity interval training (HIIT) can improve lean mass, strength, and power of the lower limbs in young and older people is still under discussion. This study aimed to determine the effect of HIIT on lean mass, maximal strength, rate of force development (RFD), and muscle power of both lower limbs in healthy young and older adults. Secondarily, to compare the effects of HIIT between dominant vs. non-dominant lower limbs of each group. Materials and methods: Healthy older (n = 9; 66 ± 6 years; BMI 27.1 ± 3.1 kg m-2) and young (n = 9; 21 ± 1 years; BMI 26.2 ± 2.8 kg m-2) men underwent 12 weeks of HIIT (3x/week) on a stationary bicycle. The evaluations were made before and after the HIIT program by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), anthropometry, force transducer and, Sit-to-Stand test. The outcomes analyzed were limb lean mass, thigh circumference, maximal voluntary isometric strength, RFD (Time intervals: 0-50, 50-100, 100-200, and 0-200 ms), and muscle power in both lower limbs. Results: After 12 weeks of HIIT, non-dominant limb (NDL) showed increase in limb lean mass (p < 0.05) but without interaction (time*group). HIIT showed a gain in absolute maximal strength and also when adjusted for thigh circumference in the dominant lower limb (DL) in both groups. The RFD0-200 ms showed differences between groups but without interaction. The RFD0-50 ms of the NDL showed post-training improvements (p < 0.05) in both groups. Only the older group showed differences between DL vs. NDL in most of the RFD obtained post-intervention. In addition, post-HIIT muscle power gain was observed in both groups (p < 0.05), but mainly in older adults. Conclusion: HIIT promotes increases in lean mass, maximal strength, early RFD, and lower limb muscle power in healthy older and young individuals. The differences shown between the DL and the NDL must be analyzed in future studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Imbalance or decreased trunk strength has been associated with non-specific low back pain (NSLBP). OBJECTIVE This systematic review aimed (I) to evaluate the quality of evidence of studies evaluating the reliability of trunk strength assessment with an isokinetic dynamometer in NSLBP patients, (II) to examine the reliability of trunk strength assessment using an isokinetic dynamometer in NSLBP patients and (III) to determine the most reliable protocol for trunk strength assessment in NSLBP patients. METHOD PRISMA guidelines were followed. Three databases were used: PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science with the following keywords: Isokinetic, Dynamometer, Trunk strength testing, Muscle testing, Isokinetic measurement, CORE, Abdominal muscles, Abdominal wall, Torso, Trunk, Spine, Reliability and, Reproducibility. We included only test-retest studies, focused on the reliability of isometric and isokinetic strength assessed with an isokinetic dynamometer in NSLBP adults' patients, published in English and from inception to March 30, 2021. The methodological quality was evaluated with the CAT scale and QAREL checklist. RESULTS Five hundred and seventy-seven articles were retrieved, of which five are included in this review. Three articles provide good quality of evidence, the reliability of trunk strength assessment in NSLBP patients is excellent, and the most reliable protocol for isometric assessment is in a seated position (ICC = 0.94-0.98) and for isokinetic strength in standing position, at 60∘/s and 120∘/s (ICC = 0.98). CONCLUSION There is good quality evidence regarding the trunk strength assessment's reliability. Reliability is excellent in NSLBP patients; however, a familiarization process should be considered to obtain clinically reliable data. The most reliable protocol is in a seated position for isometric strength and a standing position for isokinetic strength.

Abstract
Aim: Sufficient strength and dynamic stability of the lower limbs are essential for improving punching force and preventing injury in amateur boxers. However, there are still no comprehensive reports on the isokinetic knee strength of boxers with different performance levels. The current study aimed to profile the isokinetic muscle strength of flexion and extension of the knee in boxers, as well as bilateral, unilateral, and functional ratios, and investigate the variation in these muscle strength characteristics associated with different performance levels. Methods: Boxers were divided in two performance groups, elite (five males and four females) and non-elite groups (five males and four females). Muscle strength of the knee was determined via an IsoMed2000 device. Parameters examined included peak torque of the hamstring (H) and quadriceps (Q) during concentric (con) and eccentric (ecc) contractions at low (60°/S), medium (180°/S), and high (240°/S) speed and bilateral ratios (BLs), unilateral ratios (ULs), and functional ratios of dominant (D) and non-dominant limbs. Results: In all angular velocities, the peak torque of H and Q was stronger in the elite group than in the non-elite group. ULs were lower in the elite group than in the non-elite group in Hcon/Qcon at 180D (p < 0.01) and 180ND (p < 0.05) and in Hecc/Qecc at 60D, 180D (p < 0.05) and 240D (p < 0.01). The elite group had higher BLs than the non-elite group in Hcon at 60°/S (p < 0.05) and Qcon at 180°/S (p < 0.05). The non-elite group had a higher functional ratio than elite boxers in Hecc/Qcon at 180D and 240D (p < 0.01). Conclusion: Elite boxers had stronger knee strength in con and ecc contractions. All boxers had normal Hecc/Qecc and Hcon/Qecc. Hcon/Qcon and Hecc/Qcon were abnormal at lower angular velocity. Elite boxers had higher BLs and lower ULs, indicating that they are at a higher risk of injury.

Abstract
The main objective of present study was to evaluate inter-rater reliability and concurrent validity of Side Hop Test stopwatch vs. force plates timing, and to determine the number of sessions and trials required to minimize the effects of learning on Side Hop Test total time and limb symmetry index. Fifteen healthy male physical education students (mean ± SD: age, 23 ± 3 years; height, 181 ± 9 cm; and weight 72 ± 6 kg) participated. Side Hop Test total time (stopwatch and force plates) of left and right leg, and limb symmetry index (force plates) were obtained over seven sessions conducted 5–7 days apart. Time recordings of two raters were similar (t = −0.56, p > 0.05) with high reliability (all ICC >0.99 and CV% <0.1) and no systematic bias when compared to force plate data (p > 0.05; for rater 1 and 2, respectively). Total time improved across the Sessions (F = 25.87, p < 0.01, ω2 = 0.18) and Trials (F = 68.15, p < 0.01, ω2 = 0.10), with no significant interaction between factors. No between-leg differences were detected (F = 0.52, p > 0.05, ω2 = 0.001). Limb symmetry index ranged from 0.999 to 1.055 across all sessions and trials (all p > 0.05 and ω2 < 0.00). Due to low coefficient of correlation, high interclass correlation coefficient, and the lack in heteroscedasticity, stopwatch measurements are valid to measure total time in the Side Hop Test. Moreover, stopwatch measurements could be reliably used to measure total time in the Side Hop Test, while the test could be administrated with only one experienced rater. Unlike total times, findings on limb symmetry index suggest it could be reliably assessed after seven familiarization sessions.

Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to examine errors for an isometric goal-directed aiming task during familiarization at different hand orientation. Interaction between neutral and pronated hand orientations with and without directional feedback would provide insights into short-term adaptations and the nature of control. In this study, 30 healthy right-handed adults (age, 22.7 ± 3.1 years; weight, 69.4 ± 16.6 kg; height, 166.7 ± 7.9 cm) were randomly assigned to neutral or pronated hand orientation conditions. To assess familiarization, participants performed ten sets (16 targets/set) of goal-directed aiming task with continuous visual feedback towards targets symmetrically distributed about the origin. Following familiarization, participants then completed eight sets; four sets with and four sets without directional feedback, in an alternated order. For both hand orientations, directional errors were reduced in the first two sets (p < 0.05), suggesting only three sets were required for familiarization. Additionally, the learning rate was also similar for both hand orientations. Following familiarization, aiming errors without feedback were significantly higher than with feedback while no change between sets was observed, regardless of hand orientation. Aiming errors were reduced in the early phase with and without visual feedback, however, in the late phase, errors were corrected when visual feedback was provided. It suggests that hand orientation does not affect familiarization, and mechanisms similar to rapid learning may be involved. It is probable that learning is consolidated during familiarization along with feedforward input to maintain performance. In addition, proprioceptive feedback plays a role in reducing errors early, while the online visual feedback plays a role in reducing errors later, independent of hand orientation.

Abstract
CONTEXT Badminton continues to be a highly competitive sport where training is introduced at an early age and load has intensified. This exposes players to a greater risk of injuries, in particular when assessing related training outcomes such as strength, agonist-antagonist ratio, and bilateral deficit among adolescents where age- and sex-associated growth and development should be considered. OBJECTIVE To evaluate strength profile of the upper and lower limbs among adolescent elite Malaysian badminton players. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING Laboratory. PARTICIPANTS Forty-eight asymptomatic athletes (24 males and 24 females) were grouped into early and late adolescence (13-14 y old and 15-17 y old, respectively). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S) Strength (absolute and normalized) of the external/internal rotators of the shoulder and flexor/extensor of the knee and strength derivatives, conventional strength ratio (CSR), dynamic control ratio (DCR), and bilateral deficits were measured. RESULTS Males showed greater strength in all strength indices (P < .05). The older group had greater strength compared to younger for most of the upper and lower limb indices (P < .05); these effects diminished when using normalized data. For females, there was no age group effect in the shoulder and knee strength. All players displayed lower shoulder and knee normative values for CSR and DCR. Dominant and non-dominant knee strength were comparable between sex and age groups. CONCLUSIONS For males, growth and maturation had a greater contribution to strength gained compared to training, whereas for females, growth, maturation, and training did not improve strength. The normalized data indicated that training did not improve all indices measured apart from external rotator strength in females. All players also displayed lower normative values of CSR and DCR. These results suggest that training in elite adolescent Malaysian badminton players lacks consideration of strength gain and injury risk factors.
