Can caffeine intake combined with aerobic exercise lead to improvement in attentional and psychomotor performance in trained individuals?

The role of nutritional factors in exercise-induced bronchoconstriction: a narrative review

Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) describes an acute narrowing of the airways that develops following vigorous physical activity. Clinical responses to current asthma therapy, such as leukotriene antagonists and corticosteroids, are heterogeneous, even with optimal treatment. Epidemiological studies indicate an increasing use of complementary and alternative medicine therapy in asthma patients due to the lack of efficacy of conventional treatment, concerns about potentially harmful side effects of pharmacological treatment, cost barriers to asthma care, and the accessibility of complementary and alternative medicine therapy. Plausible physiological mechanisms now exist for many nutrients as potential modifiers of EIB severity, primarily because of their role in inflammatory processes, airway smooth muscle function, and modulation of lung microvascular volume and pressure. Dietary supplementation as a treatment for EIB has generally shown evidence of significant yet incomplete inhibition of EIB with low-salt diets, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamin C when supplemented for up to 3 weeks. However, larger, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blinded trials are needed to clarify the effectiveness of nutritional intervention in individuals with EIB. Additionally, many studies have focused on nonathletes with EIB, and therefore, more studies are required to evaluate the efficacy of nutritional intervention on EIB in elite athletes. In conclusion, if dietary supplementation or restriction is prescribed, it should be seen as an option to lessen the reliance on pharmaceutical interventions and not as an alternative to established pharmacotherapies.

Effects of Aerobic-Anaerobic Exercise on Social Avoidance, Positive and Negative Affects, and Self-Consciousness of Obese Women

Background

We aimed to investigate the effects of aerobic-anaerobic exercise on social avoidance, positive and negative emotions, and self-awareness in obese women as well as provide some basis for guiding them to increase their physical exercise and promote physical and mental health.

Methods

Sixty obese women (body mass index≥23 kg/m²) who volunteered to participate in the experiment were selected in Tianjin, China in 2022, and divided into control group and observation group with 30 people in each group. The control group received normal physical training, whereas the observation group received a uniform diet and an aerobic-anaerobic exercise intervention based on normal physical training that lasted for 12 weeks. The changes in the two groups before and after the intervention were compared.

Results

After intervention, the body fat rate and fat weight of obese women in the observation group were significantly decreased, the lean body weight and muscle weight were significantly increased, and the improvement of body composition index was better than those in the control group was (P<0.05). The obese women in the observation group showed lower scores in negative affect and higher scores in positive affect (P<0.05). The obese women in the observation group showed higher scores in comfort, health assessment, satisfaction of body parts, overweight, gregariousness, anxiety, physical appearance and properties, intelligence, school situation, and behavior, while the observation group received lower scores in social avoidance and social distress.

Conclusion

Aerobic-anaerobic exercise has a better role in strengthening the physical exercise and physical and mental development of obese women.

The therapeutic potential of exercise and caffeine on attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in athletes

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterized by evident and persistent inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity, and social difficulties and is the most common childhood neuropsychiatric disorder, and which may persist into adulthood. Seventy to 80% of children and adults with ADHD are treated with stimulant medication, with positive response rates occurring for both populations. Medicated ADHD individuals generally show sustained and improved attention, inhibition control, cognitive flexibility, on-task behavior, and cognitive performance. The ethics of ADHD medication use in athletics has been a debated topic in sport performance for a long time. Stimulants are banned from competition in accordance with World Anti-Doping Association and National Collegiate Athletic Association regulations, due to their ability to not only enhance cognitive performance but also exercise performance. Limited research has been conducted looking at the differences in exercise performance variables in unmedicated ADHD verses medicated ADHD. Not all ADHD athletes choose stimulant medication in their treatment plan due to personal, financial, or other reasons. Non-stimulant treatment options include non-stimulant medication and behavioral therapy. However, the use of caffeinated compounds and exercise has both independently been shown to be effective in the management of ADHD symptoms in human studies and animal models. This mini review will discuss the effect of exercise and caffeine on neurobehavioral, cognitive, and neurophysiological factors, and exercise performance in ADHD athletes, and whether exercise and caffeine should be considered in the treatment plan for an individual with ADHD.
