Preparation, optoelectronic and spectroscopic analysis of fluorinated heteroleptic samarium complexes for display applications

Experimental and theoretical photophysical study of new synthesized highly asymmetric nona-coordinated trivalent Sm and Eu complexes

The synthesis and characterizations of two new complexes, [Sm(btfa)3Cl-terp] (SmC45H28F9O6N3Cl) and [Eu(btfa)3Cl-terp] (EuC45H28F9O6N3Cl) were done successfully. The complexes have nona-coordinate Sm and Eu centres coordinated to six oxygen atoms of benzoyltrifluoro acetone (btfa) and three nitrogen atoms of chloro-terpyridine (Cl-terp). The ground state geometry of both complexes was optimized using the sparkle model and the shape analysis was carried out using SHAPE v2.1. The detailed photophysical properties of the complexes were studied in solution, solid and 5 % PMMA thin film. The emission spectra of the complexes are devoid of any ligand fluorescence that marks the utilized organic ligands as efficient sensitizers. The decay time and absolute quantum yield of the Sm complex show 12- and 7-fold increase than its precursor [Sm(btfa)3(H2O)2]. The longer decay time of 93 µs is higher than most of the reported trivalent samarium β-diketonate complexes. The Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters, radiative and non-radiative rate constants, intensity ratio, radiative and experimental lifetime, absolute as well as intrinsic quantum yield and sensitization efficiency were calculated and analysed for Eu complex. The decay time, absolute quantum yield and intrinsic quantum yield of [Eu(btfa)3Cl-terp] are 3-, 15- and 3-times larger than precursor, [Eu(btfa)3(H2O)2]. The energy transfer from organic sensitizers to europium ion and the contribution of individual sensitizers along with the luminescence branching ratio of emitting levels of Eu ion were investigated and analysed.

Tuning emissive color of trivalent terbium ion through environmental factors: optoelectronic insights from theoretical, spectral and computational studies

The combination of 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-phenyl-1,3-butanedione (TFPB) and pyrazine (pyz) with Tb3+ ions forms two distinct types of complexes, represented by the formulas [Tb(TFPB)3(L)2], where L is either H2O or pyz, and [(Tb(TFPB)3)2pyz]. A detailed examination of the impact of the surrounding environment on the photophysical properties of these synthesized complexes was conducted. Photoluminescence (PL) analysis indicated that the magnetic dipole transition (5D4 → 7F5) is dominant in Tb(iii)-based systems. The prepared complexes exhibit visible luminescence in both solid and solution media. Remarkably, the luminescence intensity of the mononuclear complex is significantly higher than that of its dinuclear counterpart, highlighting the impact of efficient energy transfer on emission intensity. The CIE color coordinates of these complexes in solution closely align with NTSC standard values. Additionally, modulation of emissive color is evident when the surrounding media (from solid to solution) and solvent nature are altered. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were performed to elucidate the electronic density distribution in the synthesized complexes. Additionally, a comprehensive analysis, including IR, UV, NMR, thermogravimetry and cyclic voltammetry, was conducted, along with theoretical calculations using Judd-Ofelt analysis.

Optimizing white light emission in Dy(iii) complexes: impact of energy transfer from mono and bidentate ligands on luminescence

Complexes of dysprosium(iii) ions with 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoro-2,4-pentanedione featuring various mono and bi-dentate neutral ligands have been prepared and thoroughly investigated. The synthesized complexes exhibit an octa-coordinated environment, achieved by stoichiometrically combining organic ligands and Dy(iii) ions. This octa-coordination environment of Dy(iii) ion was confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetry and elemental analysis. Near-white light (NWL) is emitted when complexes were exposed to UV radiation, indicating a significant flow of energy from the sensitizing moieties towards the Dy(iii) ion. This NWL emission might have resulted due to a balance between the intensities corresponding to emission peaks at 480 nm (blue) and 575 nm (yellow) in Dy1-Dy3. Emission spectra recorded at different excitation wavelength were utilized to study the tunability of CIE color coordinates. In addition to their high thermal stability, the complexes display bipolar paramagnetic shifts in their NMR spectra. The 4F9/2 → 6H13/2 transition, contributing ∼62% of the total emission, stands out as a promising candidate for laser amplification due to its dominance in the emission spectra. Additionally, NWL emission observed in a solid Dy(iii) complex opens intriguing possibilities for its application in next-generation white-light emitting devices.

Computational and optoelectronic investigations of red-emissive europium (III) β-diketonate with n-donor ligands for display applications

Europium complexes exhibiting red luminescence were prepared by employing β-diketone as main ligand and 1,10-phenanthroline as an additional ligand. Various methods, including 1H NMR, IR spectroscopy and analysis of optical band gap were employed to examine these complexes. The luminescent photophysical properties were investigated using PL spectroscopy and theoretical calculations were conducted to explore radiative transitions probabilities and Judd-Ofelt (J-O) parameters for transitions of type 5D0 → 7F2, 4. J-O parameters were determined using the JOES computer program and results were in good agreement with the outcomes obtained experimentally. The luminescence analysis results have verified the vibrant, single-color red emission of the prepared complexes. The band gap of ternary europium complexes, determined optically, electronically, and theoretically, falls within the range of 3-4 eV. This similarity indicates that these complexes are potentially suitable as semiconductor materials. The results from absorption, electrochemical and photophysical analyses indicate the potential use of synthesized complexes in lighting and display applications.

Exploring the role of neutral ligands in modulating the photoluminescence of samarium complexes with 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoro-2,4-pentanedione

Four eight-coordinated luminescent samarium complexes of type [Sm(hfpd)3L2] and [Sm(hfpd)3L'] [where hfpd = 1,1,1,5,5,5-Hexafluoro-2,4-pentanedione L = tri-octyl-phosphine oxide (TOPO) and L' = 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), neocuproine (neoc) and bathocuproine (bathoc) were synthesized via a stoichiometrically controlled approach. This allows for precise control over the stoichiometry of the complexes, leading to reproducible properties. This investigation focuses on understanding the impact of secondary ligands on the luminescent properties of these complexes. Infrared (IR) spectra provided information about the molecular structures, whereas 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra confirmed these structural details along with the coordination of ligands to trivalent Sm ion. The UV-vis spectra revealed the molar absorption coefficient and absorption bands associated with the hfpd ligand and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy demonstrated intense orange-red emission (648 nm relative to 4G5/2 → 6H9/2) from the complexes. The Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage (CIE) triangles indicated that the complexes emitted warm orange red light with color coordinates (x, y) ranging from (0.62, 0.36) to (0.40, 0.27). The investigation of the band gap as well as color parameters confirms the utility of these complexes in displays and LEDs.

Realization of a green-emitting pyrosilicate-structured Er3+-activated Y2Si2O7 phosphor: a systematic study of opto-electronic characteristics and thermal stability for lighting applications

A series of green-emitting Y2-x Si2O7:xEr3+ phosphors (x = 1-7 mol%) have been successfully synthesized using a straightforward gel-combustion method facilitated by urea. X-ray diffraction analysis provided specific patterns for samples, confirming a consistent triclinic phase across erbium-doped structures compared to undoped structures. Studies using TEM and EDX were conducted to identify the surface-related characteristics and chemical composition of the synthesized nanophosphor, respectively. The band gap was determined to be 5.55 eV and 5.80 eV for the host material and optimal sample, respectively. The primary peak of excitation, observed at 379 nm, represents the highly sensitive electric dipole transition from the 4I15/2 state to the 4G11/2 level, suggesting that the prepared phosphors could effectively absorb NUV light for activation. The PL profiles of Y2-x Si2O7:xEr3+ (x = 1-7 mol%) phosphors demonstrate characteristic emissions at 409 nm (2H9/2 → 4I15/2), 522 nm (2H11/2 → 4I15/2), 553 nm (4S3/2 → 4I15/2) and 662 nm (4F9/2 → 4I15/2). In accordance with Dexter's theory, luminescence quenching observed at a concentration of 4 mol% Er3+ is attributed to dipole-quadrupole interactions. The optimal sample demonstrates excellent thermal stability, indicated by its luminescence at different temperatures and activation energy of 0.2641 eV. Additionally, the CIE, color purity and CCT values of the fabricated nanomaterials make it ideal for use in lighting applications.

Heteroleptic samarium complexes with high quantum yields for temperature sensing applications

Two new crystallographically characterized samarium complexes, [Sm(fod)3(L1)] (1) and [Sm(fod)3(L2)] (2) {L1 = 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (bath), L2 = 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine and fod = anion of 6,6,7,7,8,8,8-heptafluoro-2,2-dimethyl-3,5-octanedione (Hfod)}, were synthesized and thoroughly characterized. Single-crystal (SC) analysis shows that complex 1 is an eight-coordinate structure with a distorted square antiprism geometry (D4d), whereas complex 2 possesses a nine-coordinate structure with distorted muffin geometry (Cs). The NMR results are in line with SC-XRD analysis, which further validate that the complexes remain intact in solutions. The photophysical characteristics of the complexes were studied in both visible and near infra-red (NIR) regions. The PLQY values of the present complexes were found to be higher than those reported in the literature except for a tetrakis Sm complex. This result indicates that both the ligands act as effective antennas for the present systems. A comparison of PLQY and emission lifetime values within the present complexes (in solid state) reveals that energy transfer from terpy to Sm3+ is more effective than that from the bath ligand. Various color parameters of the complexes were calculated, and the determined CCT values suggest that the complexes may be used as warm light sources. The determined band gap values for the complexes are in the range of those for semiconductors, which suggest the application of present systems in the field of optoelectronics. The curve between the emission intensity and temperature for complex 1 shows a perfect linearity (χ2 = 0.99), which suggests that this complex can have potential application as a temperature sensor in the range 60-350 K.

A green light emissive LaSr2AlO5:Er3+ nanocrystalline material for solid state lighting: crystal phase refinement and down-conversion photoluminescence with high thermal stability

The present study reveals the structural and optoelectronic characteristics of a down-converted (DC) green luminous Er3+ doped LaSr2AlO5 phosphor that was produced by employing an efficient and reliable gel-combustion process assisted with urea as a fuel. Using Rietveld refinement of diffraction data, the crystal structure and phase formation were examined. The surface morphology and elemental configuration of the phosphor were analyzed via TEM and EDX spectroscopy, respectively. The band gap of LaSr2AlO5 (5.97 eV) and optimized La0.96Sr2AlO5:4 mol% Er3+ (5.51 eV) classify the optimized sample as a direct band-gap material. The PL peaks located in the visible range corresponding to transitions 2H9/2 → 4I15/2 (406 nm), 2H11/2 → 4I15/2 (520 nm), 4S3/2 → 4I15/2 (550 nm), and 4F9/ 2 → 4I15/2 (665 nm) were revealed by photoluminescence spectroscopy under 377 nm excitation. Above 4 mol% Er3+ doping, concentration quenching was observed, which was controlled by the quadrupole-quadrupole interaction. Based on the findings of the double exponential fitting of lifetime curves acquired from the emission spectra at λex = 377 nm and λem = 550 nm, the average lifetime of the excited levels of considered nanomaterials was estimated. The temperature-dependent emission spectra of the La0.96Sr2AlO5:4 mol% Er3+ sample were collected in the range 298-498 K. The considered phosphor was found to have a high thermal stability as evidenced by the luminous intensity being sustained at 74.29% at 498 K compared to the intensity at ambient temperature (298 K) with an activation energy of 0.1453 eV. The calculated color purity and superb chromaticity coordinates indicates that the phosphors have a high degree of color purity, which further supports its applicability as a green component in solid-state lighting.

Optical, electrochemical and photophysical analyses of heteroleptic luminescent Ln(iii) complexes for lighting applications

A series of lanthanide complexes have been synthesized with fluorinated 1,3-diketones and heteroaromatic ancillary moieties. Spectroscopic studies reveal the attachment of the respective lanthanide ion to the oxygen site of β-diketone and nitrogen site of auxiliary moieties. The conducting behavior of the complexes is proposed by their optical energy gaps which lie in the range of semiconductors. The emission profiles of the lanthanide complexes demonstrate red and green luminescence owing to the distinctive transitions of Sm³⁺ and Tb³⁺ ions, respectively. Energy transfer via antenna effect clearly reveals the effective transfer of energy from the chromophoric moiety to the Ln³⁺ ion. The prepared conducting and luminescent Ln(iii) complexes might be employed as the emitting component in designing OLEDs.

Synthesis of green emissive terbium(III) complexes for displays: Optical, electrochemical and photoluminescent analysis

A series of heteroleptic terbium(III) complexes with fluorinated 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone (TTFA) and other heteroaromatic units have been synthesized. The developed heteroleptic complexes were inspected via elemental study, cyclic voltammetry, thermal analysis and spectroscopic investigations. Optical band-gap data proposed the conducting property of prepared complexes. The photoluminescence emission profiles illustrated peaks based on terbium(III) cation (Tb³⁺ ) positioned at ~617, 586, 546 and 491 nm, imputed to ⁵ D₄ to ⁷ F_J (J = 3,4,5,6) transitions separately. Most intense peak at 546 nm corresponding to ⁵ D₄  → ⁷ F₅ transition is accountable for the green emissive character of developed complexes. The luminous character of complexes reveals the sensitization of Tb³⁺ by ligands. Color parameters further corroborates the green emanation of Tb³⁺ complexes. The photometric characteristics of complexes recommended their usages in designing display devices.

Computational analysis, Urbach energy and Judd-Ofelt parameter of warm Sm3+ complexes having applications in photovoltaic and display devices

In this work, six reddish orange Sm3+ complexes were synthesized using organic ligand (L) and secondary ligands having hetero atoms by a one-step significant liquid-assisted grinding method and were characterized by spectroscopic techniques. The Urbach energy and band gap energy of the complexes were inspected by a linear fit. Using a least square fitting method, the Judd-Ofelt parameter and radiative properties were also determined. Thermal analysis, colorimetric analysis, luminescence decay time and anti-microbial properties of complexes were studied. The luminescence emission spectra of binary and ternary complexes displayed three characteristic peaks at 565, 603 and 650 nm in the powder form and four peaks at 563, 605, 646 and 703 nm in a solution phase due to 4G5/2 → 6H5/2, 4G5/2 → 6H7/2, 4G5/2 → 6H9/2 and 4G5/2 → 6H11/2 transitions respectively. The most intense transition in the solid phase (4G5/2 → 6H7/2) is accountable for orange color, and in the solution form, the highly luminescent peak (4G5/2 → 6H9/2) is responsible for reddish orange color of Sm3+ complexes. PXRD and SEM analyses suggested that the complexes possess a nanoparticle grain size with crystalline nature. The decent optoelectrical properties of title complexes in the orangish-red visible domain indicated possible applications in the manufacturing of display and optoelectronic devices.

Mononuclear luminous β-diketonate Ln (III) complexes with heteroaromatic auxiliary ligands: Synthesis and luminescent characteristics

A series of lanthanide (samarium and terbium) β-diketonates with heteroaromatic auxiliary ligands have been synthesized. The prepared complexes were characterized through electrochemical, thermal and spectroscopic analyses. Infrared analysis reveals the binding of respective metal ion to oxygen and nitrogen atoms of diketone and ancillary ligands respectively. TG/DTG profiles provide thermal information and specify the high thermal stability of the prepared complexes. The complexes exhibit the sharp and structured Ln-based emission in visible region upon irradiation in UV range. Photophysical analysis demonstrated the green and orange-red emission due to the respective characteristic transitions of Tb³⁺ and Sm³⁺ ions. Photophysical properties affirm the luminous behavior of synthesized complexes. These luminous lanthanide complexes could be used as emitting material in designing OLEDs.

Fluorinated β-diketone-based Sm(III) complexes: spectroscopic and optoelectronic characteristics

The synthesis and characterization of a series of octa-coordinated Sm(III) complexes with 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-(2-naphthyl)-1,3-butanedione (TFNB) and 2,2'-bipyridine (Bpy) derivatives as ancillary ligand are described here. The complexes were analyzed by elemental, spectroscopic such as infrared spectroscopy, ¹ H NMR, and thermogravimetric analyses. The fluorinated TFNB ligand absorbs in the range from 200 to 400 nm. The complexes show the sharp and structured Sm-based emissions in visible region upon irradiation in UV range. Excitation spectra of complexes show similarity to the absorption spectra of ligands suggesting that excitation energy is transferred from ligands to Sm(III) centre by the antenna effect. Photoluminescence emission spectra and colour parameters affirmed that the complexes show luminescence in orange-red region. These luminous Sm(III) complexes might be applied as emissive layer in organic electroluminescent devices.
