Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of the study is to investigate doctors' and nurses' beliefs and attitudes towards family presence and open visiting policies in Pediatric Intensive Care Units (PICUs) in Italy. METHODS A multicentric nationwide study was carried out in all 30 Italian PICUs. All doctors and nurses were asked to complete the Italian version of the Beliefs and Attitudes toward Visitation in ICU Questionnaire (BAVIQ). The questionnaire consists of 20 questions on beliefs and 14 on attitudes towards visiting. RESULTS The response rate was 89% (925 questionnaires), with 87% of nurses and 94% of doctors responding. Most respondents (85%) believed that visiting has a beneficial effect on the patient and that an open visiting policy can reduce parental anxiety (68%). However, nearly half the respondents believed that an open policy interferes with direct nursing care (45%) and makes them feel checked up on (49%). Multiple logistic regression conducted on the eight most representative items showed that factors associated with beliefs and attitudes opposing open visiting policies were: being a nurse, geographic area (working in PICUs in Central Italy or the South and Islands) and working in a cardiac surgery unit. Age showed a trend of younger professionals being more convinced that an open visiting policy can be beneficial for patients. CONCLUSIONS Most healthcare professionals in Italian PICUs believe that an open visiting policy for families is beneficial for both the patient and his/her family. However, despite an overall positive attitude among PICU staff members, there is still some resistance in Italy, particularly among nurses and in cardiac surgery units.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the application value of bridge-in, learning objective, pre-assessment, participatory learning, post-assessment, and summary (BOPPPS) model combined with situational teaching method in the clinical teaching of intensive care unit (ICU), and to provide experience for the reform of ICU clinical teaching and standardized training of intensive medicine. METHODS A randomized trial was conducted using a multi-center, prospective cohort study. A total of 293 residential physicians in ICU of Fujian Medical University Union Hospital, the Affiliated Hospital of Putian University and the First Affiliated Hospital of Gannan Medical University from January 2021 to December 2023 were selected as subjects, and the residential physicians in ICU in each medical center were divided into control group and experimental group using random number table method. The control group adopted bedside teaching and demonstration teaching method, and the experimental group adopted BOPPPS model combined with situational teaching method. Clinical teaching performance was evaluated by ICU admission examination, and study process questionnaire (SPQ) and the critical thinking disposition inventory-Chinese version (CTDI-CV) was used to evaluate the learning motivation and critical thinking ability of the two groups. At the same time, the effect evaluation and satisfaction questionnaire of ICU training (EESQ) was used to evaluate the teaching satisfaction. RESULTS The scores of the experimental group in ICU theoretical knowledge, clinical thinking and skills, and the treatment of clinical critical cases were higher than those of the control group [(87.31 ± 13.15), (92.86 ± 12.35), (81.45 ± 11.28)] vs. [(83.94 ± 12.73), (88.37 ± 12.61), (78.83 ± 10.47)], the difference between the two groups was statistically significant (p < 0.05). The scores of surface motivation, deep motivation, achievement motivation and SPQ total scores of the experimental group were all higher than those in control group (p < 0.05), and the scores of seek truth, open mind, analytical ability, systematic ability, self-confidence of critical thinking and intellectual curiosity of the experimental group were also higher than those in the control group, and the CTDI total score was statistically significant (p < 0.05). In addition, the results of the questionnaire showed that the experimental group was better than the control group in terms of learning interest in ICU, improvement of humanistic care and doctor-patient communication ability, improvement of teamwork ability, improvement of job identity, ICU training harvest and satisfaction with teacher style (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION The combination of BOPPPS model and situational teaching method is likely a more effective and helpful which may improve the clinical comprehensive ability and training quality of residential physicians, and it may be worth learning and promoting.

Abstract
AIM(S) To explore intensive care nurses' (ICN) perceptions of simulation-based learning (SBL). DESIGN A systematic review and meta-synthesis. METHODS The review followed the PRISMA guidelines for reporting a systematic review. A systematic search strategy was developed using a modified PICo framework. A comprehensive search was conducted in July 2023 in CINAHL, OVID Embase, Medline complete, Web of Science, ERIC and Scopus databases for articles published in English between 2013 and 2023. Data were extracted using the Joanna Briggs Institute QARI Data Extraction, with data synthesis guided by Braun and Clark's thematic analysis approach. Quality appraisal was assessed using the CASP tool. RESULTS Eleven studies providing qualitative data were included for analysis. Analysis and meta-synthesis led to the construction of two themes: The learning experience and professional growth through collaboration. CONCLUSION The review highlights the balance needed in finding the appropriate simulation approach, with the right level of fidelity, conducted at appropriately regular intervals, incorporating the correct makeup of professional team members, conducted in the right environment and facilitated by a skilled facilitator, to ensure best outcomes and return on investment for ICN's education. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE These findings are a valuable resource for educators and organisations considering simulation-based learning initiatives in the intensive care setting. NO PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION This review involved analysis of existing literature and as such no unique patient or public involvement occurred. REPORTING METHOD The systematic review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) reporting guidelines.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Virtual simulation and face-to-face simulation are effective for clinical judgment training. Rare studies have tried to improve clinical judgment ability by applying virtual simulation and face-to-face simulation together. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of an integrated non-immersive virtual simulation and high-fidelity face-to-face simulation program on enhancing nursing students' clinical judgment ability and understanding of nursing students' experiences of the combined simulation. METHODS A sequential exploratory mixed-methods study was conducted in a nursing simulation center of a university in Central China. Third-year nursing students (n = 122) taking clinical training in ICUs were subsequentially assigned to the integrated non-immersive virtual simulation and high-fidelity face-to-face simulation program arm (n = 61) or the face-to-face simulation-only arm (n = 61) according to the order in which they entered in ICU training. Clinical judgment ability was measured by the Lasater Clinical Judgment Rubric (LCJR). Focus group interviews were conducted to gather qualitative data. RESULTS Students in both arms demonstrated significant improvement in clinical judgment ability scores after simulation, and students in the integrated arm reported more improvement than students in the face-to-face simulation-only arm. The qualitative quotes provided a context for the quantitative improvement measured by the LJCR in the integrated arm. Most of the quantitative findings were confirmed by qualitative findings, including the domains and items in the LJCR. The findings verified and favored the effect of the combination of non-immersive virtual simulation and high-fidelity face-to-face simulation integrated program on enhancing nursing students' clinical judgment ability. CONCLUSIONS The integrated virtual simulation and face-to-face simulation program was feasible and enhanced nursing students' self-reported clinical judgment ability. This integrated non-immersive virtual simulation and high-fidelity face-to-face simulation program may benefit nursing students and newly graduated nurses in the ICU more than face-to-face simulation only.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Effective communication as a key component of palliative care requires sufficient knowledge and experience to make nursing interventions successful. AIM This quasi-experimental study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of the COMFORT communication model as an intervention to improve student nurses' communication skills while they are under clinical training in specialist palliative care inpatient units. METHODS The population sample included 86 student nurses who were randomly assigned into two groups of 40. The intervention group received training on communication skills using the COMFORT communication model. Nine lectures were delivered online or offline; the lectures lasted between 25 to 60 minutes. The control group received the conventional educational programme about communication with patients and families, according to the curriculum of the bachelor's degree in nursing. Data were collected using the Communication Skills Questionnaire and Communication Skills Attitude Scale and analysed using IBM® SPSS® Statistics 22.0. RESULTS The findings showed that, after the implementation of COMFORT communication model, there was a statistically significant difference in communication skills between the intervention group (122.95±9.36) and the control group (110.1±8.92). There was also a significant difference in attitudes toward communication skills between the intervention group (90.25±8.86) and the control group (90.85±9.15) (P=0.0001). The findings of the study revealed that the COMFORT Communication model created significant statistical differences in the student's attitude, knowledge and communication skills. CONCLUSION Novice nurses sometimes struggle with the level of communication skills needed when caring for patients with an end-stage illness. The implementation of the COMFORT communication model significantly improved communication skills and attitudes toward communication. Due to the need to establish effective communication as the core of nursing practice, the implementation of this training programme is recommended for students and qualified nurses, particularly when providing palliative care.

Abstract
AIMS The objectives were to evaluate the effectiveness of a standardised patient simulation programme and to analyse to what extent the students transferred the skills covered in the simulation to clinical practice 6 months after the intervention. DESIGN A quasi-experimental study was carried out, with measurements taken pre-, post- and 6 months after the implementation of a standardised patient simulation programme in a single group. METHODS Eligible to participate were all final year nursing undergraduates during the 2020-2021 academic year. In total, 41 undergraduate nursing students took part in all stages of the study. It was measured attitude towards communication, self-efficacy, communication skills and resilience. The degree to which communication skills were used in the real setting was also assessed. RESULTS The students' scores for self-efficacy and perceived communication skills improved and were maintained after six months. Regarding to resilience, improvement was even evident six months following the intervention. In terms of the transfer to clinical practice, the students were making moderate to high use of the communication skills learned in the simulation.

Abstract
Actor-network theory, which emerged from science and technology studies in the 1980s, regards everything in the social and ecological systems as a continuous result of the network of relations where they are located. Social-ecological resilience, with its origins in systems ecology, focuses on the non-linear changing dynamics of social-ecological systems and their governance. Among them, social-ecological resilience study integrates different disciplines, backgrounds, and themes, which inevitably leads to the vagueness of its concept. Both actor-network theory and social-ecological resilience emphasize human-nature relationships and view social-ecological systems as dynamic and unpredictable "networks". Therefore, this paper explored the potential conceptual or theoretical underpinnings that actor-network theory can provide in social-ecological resilience through interdisciplinary research. Specifically, a semi-structured interview was conducted with 30 fishing households from Chang-shan Archipelago in Northeastern China. The obtained interview data were analyzed through thematic analysis, and three main themes were generated, including "heterogeneous networks", "agency", and "translation", which facilitated a reconceptualization of the three components of social-ecological resilience, namely, "linked social-ecological systems", "changing dynamics" and "the ability to maintain resilience", and also provided a new theoretical perspective on the adaptive governance of social-ecological systems.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate learning experience and clinical outcomes after intervention. DESIGN A mixed study. METHODS A multiple cohort sample (n=75) of community nurses underwent an SP simulation. A survey and 12- and 24-month incident data were used to evaluate the learning experience and clinical outcomes. FINDINGS The nurses were highly satisfied with their learning. In addition, their ability to identify near-misses and the presence of incidents showed a statistically significant improvement (p < .05). CONCLUSIONS SP simulation effectively improved learning experience and clinical outcomes regardless of nurses' experience. CLINICAL EVIDENCE Simulation learning can have a positive impact on clinical outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to explore critical care nursing students' experiences with simulation-based communication skills training focusing on relatives. METHODS Two complex scenarios were developed using professional actors in the role as relatives. A survey was conducted with critical care nursing students from 2017 to 2020. We performed descriptive and correlational analysis of the quantitative data and thematic analysis of the open-ended questions. RESULTS The total learning outcome was 4.10 (SD = 0.79, N = 98) on a Likert scale from 1 to 5. The learning outcome with the use of a professional actor was 4.65 (SD = 0.6, N = 118), and the experience of realism was 4.16 (SD = 0.85, N = 67). The students rated the debriefing as 4.38 (SD = 0.73, N = 118), and they experienced more positive emotions than negative during the simulation. CONCLUSION High learning outcomes were reported. The use of professional actors with fine-tuned improvisational skills enhanced the sense of realism in the scenarios. However, the impact of emotions on learning outcomes should be further investigated. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS By obtaining advanced communication skills focusing on relatives during their nursing education, critical care nursing students can improve the care they give.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to describe the experiences of nursing interns in the intensive care unit (ICU). DESIGN This study was a descriptive qualitative research. SETTINGS, PARTICIPANTS, METHODS The study data were collected via focus group interviews of 25 nursing interns in the two different ICUs of a university hospital who had volunteered to participate in the study. There were four focus group interviews in all, one for each of four different groups of nursing interns. The semi-structured interview form was used in the study. RESULTS Seven themes emerged in the study: fear, awareness of nurses' roles, finding opportunities for self-improvement, difficulty in caregiving, difficulty in communicating with the patients and the care team, experiencing ambivalent feelings related to death, and adaptation to the clinical environment. CONCLUSIONS Doing one's internship in the ICU was evaluated by the nursing interns in this study as a beneficial practice despite the difficulties involved in it. It is recommended, that intensive-care practices be included in the undergraduate education program for nurses and that appropriate guidance and monitoring be given to the nursing interns in ICUs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Standardised patient simulations seem to be useful for improving the communication skills of health sciences students. However, it is important to define the effectiveness of these types of interventions in complex scenarios linked to disease chronicity and end-of-life contexts. METHODS A quasi-experimental study with pre- and post-intervention measures was carried out in a single group. A total of 161 nursing students completed different assessment instruments to measure their attitudes towards communication (Attitude Toward Communication Scale), self-efficacy (Self-Efficacy of Communication Skills, SE-12), and communication skills (Health Professionals Communication Skills Scale, EHC-PS) before and after simulation training with standardised patients. The objective of the program was to train students in non-technical skills for complex situations involving chronicity and end-of-life care. It comprised eight sessions lasting 2.5 h each. RESULTS The results showed notable baseline gender differences in attitudes towards communication and in the informative communication dimension, with women obtaining higher scores. The participants' self-efficacy and communication skills significantly improved after completing the intervention, with no significant differences being found for the attitudes towards communication variable. CONCLUSION The standardised patient simulation programme for complex scenarios related to chronicity and end-of-life contexts improved communication self-efficacy and communication skills in these nursing students. In future work it will be important to analyse the influence of gender and attitudes towards communication as variables in the learning of communication skills in nursing students.

Abstract
When provided with opportunities to view the world from the patients' perspective, nursing students can experience the same practical occurrences and feelings that patients encounter, consequently becoming more aware of their discomfort and pain. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of the patient experience virtual reality blended learning program developed for nursing students. This study is significant in that it presents a program that enables nursing students to not only experience being perioperative patients themselves but also experience their conditions in places other than hospitals, which are generally used as training locations. The analytical results of this study indicated that nursing students who virtually experienced the conditions of perioperative patients through virtual reality blended learning showed increased levels of empathy, positive attitudes toward patient safety treatment, confidence in nursing care, and clinical skill performance. The developed program in this study blended various teaching methods with a virtual reality platform to help junior nursing students with practical and effective perioperative training increase their levels of empathy by simulating the experiences and perspectives of perioperative patients.

Abstract
Background: High-fidelity simulation is being considered as a suitable environment for imparting the skills needed to deal with end-of-life (EOL) situations. The objective was to evaluate an EOL simulation project that introduced communication skills to nursing students who had not yet begun their training in real healthcare environments. Methods: A sequential approach was used. The "questionnaire for the evaluation of the end-of-life project" was employed. Results: A total of 130 students participated. Increasing the time spent in high-fidelity simulation significantly favored the exploration of feelings and fears regarding EOL (t = -2.37, p = 0.019), encouraged dialogue (t = -2.23, p = 0.028) and increased the acquisition of communication skills (t = -2.32, p = 0.022). Conclusions: High-fidelity simulation promotes communication skills related to EOL in novice nursing students.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE to analyze the publications on clinical simulation practices for education in Nursing in Intensive Care. METHOD an integrative review carried out through LILACS, PubMed, Cochrane Library, CINAHL and SciELO databases, of articles published from 2008 to 2017. RESULTS 29 articles were selected, of which 76% discuss the use of simulation in continuing education of nursing professionals, while the others describe their use for student education. There is a higher prevalence of studies with a level of evidence 6 (17), with 28 international publications. There was an increase in scientific production, with 16 articles published in the last three years. CONCLUSION variables after simulation use, such as confidence, communication skills, efficiency in the identification of clinical worsening of patients, development of technical skills, teamwork and clinical decision-making, presented a significant improvement, demonstrating that this tool is effective in qualifying care for critical patients.
