Abstract
BACKGROUND The main purposes of the nursing profession are to protect and improve health and to prevent and heal diseases. It is crucial to investigate the factors that can influence nurses' ability to enhance their performance in their professional lives and conduct the nursing care process more qualitatively and effectively. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to examine the association between emotional intelligence and compassionate communication in nurses. METHODS This cross-sectional and descriptive study was conducted with 140 nurses working in various units of the public hospital in Kilis, Turkey. Data were collected through a demographic information form, Emotional Intelligence Scale, and Compassionate Communication Scale. RESULTS It was determined that nurses' emotional intelligence and compassionate communication were above average. A significant association was found between nurses' emotional intelligence and compassionate communication (F = 16.08, P < .001) and emotional intelligence explains 10% of the variance in compassionate communication (R = 0.323, R2 = 0.104). CONCLUSIONS Emotional intelligence and compassionate communication should be taken into consideration so that nurses can recognize and understand patients' emotions, alleviate their hurt, and deliver delicate, kind, and compassionate care.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The severe conditions often experienced in an intensive care unit, combined with poor working conditions, increase stress and therefore decrease job satisfaction. Sustained stress in the workplace leads to the development of burnout, a syndrome characterised by three dimensions: emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and perceived lack of personal fulfilment. OBJECTIVE To analyse the relationship between burnout syndrome and job satisfaction among ICU personnel. DATA SOURCES The PubMed, CINAHL and Scopus databases were used. STUDY DESIGN A systematic review and meta-analysis. The study sample consisted of 18 quantitative primary studies conducted in the last five years. Validated questionnaires were used to assess burnout in ICU healthcare workers, the most commonly used being the Maslach Burnout Inventory. EXTRACTION METHODS The search equation applied was: "job satisfaction AND nurs* AND burnout AND (ICU OR intensive care units)". The search was performed in October 2022. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS The search returned 514 results. Only 73 articles met the eligibility criteria. After reading the title and abstract, 20 articles were selected. After reading the full texts, 12 articles remained and after the reverse search, 18 articles were finally selected. The studies reported a 50% prevalence of burnout, all three dimensions of which were heightened by the COVID-19 pandemic. Analysis of the study findings revealed an inverse association between burnout and job satisfaction. CONCLUSIONS Job dissatisfaction of ICU nurses depends on lack of experience, working conditions or working environment among others. ICU nurses with lower job satisfaction have higher levels of burnout. IMPLICATIONS FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE This meta-analysis shows the potential value of job satisfaction on improving health outcomes related to burnout syndrome for nursing professional in Intensive Care Units. Different factors that could increase job satisfaction and consequently protect them from suffering high levels of burnout, such as salary, permanence in the service, mental health care are the responsibility of the hospital supervisor and, finally, of the own Health System. Knowledge of a risk profile based on the factors influencing job dissatisfaction would enable the implementation of effective workplace interventions to reduce or prevent the risk of burnout. Health policies should focus on protecting the worker, so in addition to improving working conditions, it would be interesting to promote coping skills in order to improve the quality of care and patient safety.

Abstract
Background Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, global healthcare systems have faced unprecedented challenges, leading to significant psychological distress among healthcare professionals. Recognizing the importance of enhanced interprofessional collaboration in alleviating this burden, as emphasized by the World Health Organization in 2020, we investigated whether such collaboration could mitigate staff psychological distress during crises. To our knowledge, no study has yet explored the role of interprofessional collaboration as a resilience factor in crises. Methods For this monocentric cross-sectional study at a German university hospital, we examined the relationship between the quality of interprofessional collaboration and the psychological distress of healthcare professionals during the initial pandemic wave. We employed validated mental health instruments, such as the GAD-7 and PHQ-2, to assess anxiety and depressive symptoms. Additionally, custom-designed questionnaires evaluated "Pandemic-Associated Burden and Anxiety (PAB; PAA)" and interprofessional crisis management experiences. A novel "Interprofessional collaboration and communication (IPC)" assessment tool was developed based on international competency frameworks, demonstrating strong reliability. Results The study involved 299 healthcare professionals (78.6% in direct contact with COVID-19 patients). Moderate levels of PAB/PAA were reported. However, a significant proportion experienced clinically relevant anxiety, as indicated by GAD-7. Negative IPC perceptions correlated with higher levels of psychological distress. Linear regression analysis showed associations between interprofessional collaboration and anxious and depressive symptoms, and pandemic-related burden. Conclusion Our findings highlight the vital role of enhanced interprofessional collaboration in strengthening the psychological well-being of healthcare professionals during crises. The study underscores the need to foster a collaborative environment and integrate interprofessional education for resilience.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Role ambiguity is recognized as a significant psychological risk stressor in nursing practice, which undermines the psychological well-being of nurses. Since the well-being of nurses plays a crucial role in ensuring positive patient outcomes, it becomes imperative to identify strategies for improving nurses' psychological well-being. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to explore the effects of role ambiguity on anxiety in intensive care unit nurses and the mechanisms mediating emotional intelligence. METHODS In April-June 2023, a convenience sampling method was used to collect data from 360 intensive care unit nurses in a total of 7 hospitals in Shaanxi Province, Hunan Province, Beijing, and Jiangsu Province, China. A linear regression model was used to verify the mediating effect. RESULTS Role ambiguity was significantly and positively associated with anxiety in ICU nurses (p < 0.01). A mediating mechanism between role ambiguity and anxiety was established for emotional intelligence (p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Role ambiguity has a significant impact on the mental health of intensive care nurses, and emotional intelligence plays a mediating role in reducing role ambiguity and anxiety in nurses. IMPLICATIONS FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE This study highlights that role ambiguity in the intensive care unit setting increases nurses' anxiety, while emotional intelligence alleviates the anxiety associated with role ambiguity. Creating support systems and improving the environment is a top priority for nursing administrators. This includes, but is not limited to, clarifying the roles of nurses, conducting social-emotional training, and developing emotional intelligence to prevent and regulate nurses' anxiety and maintain mental health.

Abstract
The world is faced with challenges due to a growing aging population and the increasing burden of chronic disease. The acute shortage of nurses and high turnover rates, particularly among novice nurses, are of great concern in many countries. Several studies have shown that turnover intention among nurses is influenced by professional identity and job satisfaction. However, to the best of our knowledge, no studies have examined this issue in the context of novice nurses. Thus, the present study aimed to explore the relationship between professional identity, job satisfaction, and turnover intention among novice nurses in China. From March 18 to April 23, 2022, a cross-sectional survey was carried out involving 532 novice nurses recruited from four public hospitals in Sichuan Province, China. Among the sample, 526 questionnaires were retrieved, with an effective response rate of 98.87%. The mean scores for turnover intention, professional identity, and job satisfaction were 13.02 ± 3.94, 36.17 ± 7.98, and 111.02 ± 21.46, respectively. High turnover intention was observed among novice nurses, of whom 54.37% (286/526) had high or very high turnover intention. Professional identity and job satisfaction among novice nurses were moderate. In terms of demographic characteristics, "Whether living with relatives" and "Monthly income" had a statistically significant impact on the turnover intention of novice nurses (P < .05). Both professional identity (r = -0.459) and job satisfaction (r = -0.517) were significantly and moderately negatively correlated with turnover intention (P < .01). The results of the multivariate linear regression analysis revealed that variables including "Whether living with relatives," "Professional identity," "Control and responsibility for work," and "Benefits" jointly accounted for 29.9% of the variance related to turnover intention among novice nurses. "Whether living with relatives," "Professional identity," "Control and responsibility for work," and "Benefits" were highly predictive of turnover intention levels among novice nurses. Hence, potential predictors of turnover intention should be considered, and intervention research should be conducted to reduce the level of turnover intention among novice nurses.

Abstract
This study uses Digital Human Modelling (DHM) and Discrete Event Simulation (DES) to examine how caring for COVID-19-positive (C+) patients affects nurses' workload and care-quality. DHM inputs include: nurse anthropometrics, task postures, and hand forces. DES inputs include: unit-layout, patient care data, COVID-19 status & impact on tasks, and task execution-logic. The study shows that reducing nurses' biomechanical workload increases mental workload and decreases direct patient care, potentially leading to stress, burnout, and errors. Compared to pre-pandemic conditions, when nurses were assigned five C+ patients, cumulative bilateral shoulder moments and lumbar load decreased by 38%, 36%, and 46%, respectively. However, this was accompanied by increases in mental workload (242%), task waiting-time (70%), and missed-care (353%). These effects were driven by the large increase in required infection control routines. Combining DHM and DES can help evaluate workplace/task designs and provide valuable insights for healthcare system design-policy setting and operational management decision-making.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A high turnover rate in nursing has become a global concern. Mental health issues may increase the turnover intention of nurses and lead to turnover behaviors. However, very little is known about the role of bidirectional associations between emotional exhaustion and depression/anxiety on turnover intention. This study aimed to examine the associations among depression, anxiety, emotional exhaustion and turnover intention, and to test the role of bidirectional associations between depression, anxiety, and emotional exhaustion on turnover intention among nurses. METHODS An online multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted in Hunan Province, China, from December 2021 to February 2022. The questionnaire collected data from the Turnover Intention Scale, the Emotional Exhaustion Scale, the Patient Health Questionnaire-2, and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale-2, as well as sociodemographic information. Data analysis was performed by univariate analysis, Pearson correlation analysis, multiple linear regression analysis, and structural equation modeling. RESULTS The average turnover intention score among Chinese nurses was 14.34 ± 3.75. The prevalence of depression and anxiety was 25.9% and 22.3%, respectively. Depression (r = 0.378, P < 0.001), anxiety (r = 0.391, P < 0.001), and emotional exhaustion (r = 0.532, P < 0.001) were positively associated with turnover intention. Emotional exhaustion partially mediated the associations between depression/anxiety and turnover intention, with both mediating effects accounting for 60.7%. The mediating ratios of depression/anxiety on the associations between emotional exhaustion and turnover intentions were 17.6% and 16.5%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Depression, anxiety, and emotional exhaustion showed significant positive effects on turnover intention among nurses. Emotional exhaustion played a partial mediation role between depression/anxiety and turnover intention, while depression/anxiety played no significant mediation role between emotional exhaustion and turnover intention.

Abstract
Nursing research is rapidly increasing, yet contributions from numerous countries that may interest the international nursing community are impeded because many research articles are published in authors' native language and not in English. The objectives of this work were to systematically review papers published in Italian related to job satisfaction and the quality of nursing care, and to discuss their findings in light of the international literature. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) method was used. The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) and Indice della Letteretura Italiana di Scienze Infermieristiche (ILISI) databases were consulted for eligible studies published from January 2015 to November 2022. Two hundred sixteen papers were identified, 11 of which were selected for review: 8 on job satisfaction, two on workload issues, and 1 on quality of nursing care. The quality of included studies was assessed through the Effective Public Health Practice Project quality assessment tool (EPHPP). The results of our review were in line with those of international literature, and they can help to fill the knowledge gap on the quality of nursing performance in Italian care settings. In addition, the proposed method can provide further elements of discussion among literature providers and reviewers.

Abstract
Nurses experience high levels of job burnout and low levels of job satisfaction, while the COVID-19 pandemic has deteriorated working conditions. In this context, our aim was to compare levels of job burnout and job satisfaction among nurses and other healthcare workers (HCWs) after the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, we investigated the influence of demographics and job characteristics on burnout and satisfaction. We conducted a cross-sectional study with 1760 HCWs during June 2023. We used the single-item burnout measure and the "Job Satisfaction Survey". In our sample, 91.1% of nurses experienced high levels of burnout, while the respective percentage for the other HCWs was 79.9%. Nurses' satisfaction was lower than other HCWs. In particular, 61.0% of nurses experienced low levels of satisfaction, while the respective percentage for the other HCWs was 38.8%. Multivariable analysis identified that nurses, HCWs with an MSc/PhD diploma, shift workers, and those who considered their workplace as understaffed had higher burnout score and lower satisfaction score. Our results showed that the nursing profession was an independent factor of burnout and satisfaction. Several other demographic and job characteristics affected burnout and satisfaction. Policy makers, organizations, and managers should adopt appropriate interventions to improve work conditions.

Abstract
AIMS This work aims to explore staff perceptions of (1) the effectiveness of organizational communication during the COVID-19 pandemic and (2) the impact of organizational communication on staff well-being and ability to progress their work and patient care. BACKGROUND Effective coordination and communication are essential in a pandemic management response. However, the effectiveness of communication strategies used during the COVID-19 pandemic is not well understood. DESIGN An exploratory cross-sectional research design was used. A 33-item survey tool was created for the study. METHODS The study was conducted at a tertiary teaching hospital in Western Australia. Convenience sampling was used to recruit participants from nursing, medical, allied health services, administrative and clerical, and personal support services (N = 325). Data were collected between December 2020 and May 2021. RESULTS Overall, all occupational groups found working during the COVID-19 pandemic stressful, and all groups wanted accessible and accurate communication from management and new policies, procedures, and protocols for future outbreaks. CONCLUSIONS The use of occupational group-relevant strategies and COVID-19 protocols, as well as the on-going use of email, face-to-face meetings with debrief sessions, are needed to improve communication and support staff to fulfil their roles.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nurse turnover is considered a major cause of nurse shortage, representing problems for health care systems in terms of both quality and cost of care for patients, and intention to leave is the strongest practical predictor variable of actual turnover. AIM This systematic review and meta-analysis aims at exploring the global prevalence of turnover intention in intensive care nurses. DESIGN This was a systematic literature review. METHODS A systematic review of empirical quantitative studies on turnover intention in nurses of intensive care units (ICUs), published in English till March 2021, was conducted. The databases PubMed, Embase, ISI Web of Knowledge, and CINAHL were searched. Eligible studies were observational or descriptive studies that reported the prevalence of turnover intention among nurses in all types of ICUs. The quality of studies was assessed using a modified Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. A random effect meta-analysis was conducted to estimate the pooled prevalence of turnover intention among ICU nurses. RESULTS We identified 18 cross-sectional studies investigating a total of 23 140 intensive care nurses from 23 countries. The intention to leave rate was ranged from 3.0% to 75.0%. The pooled prevalence of turnover intention was 27.7% (95% confidence interval: 21.6%-34.3%). CONCLUSIONS This meta-analysis showed that more than 27% of the intensive care nurses had the intention to leave worldwide. In the current context of nursing shortage, efforts should be made to improve conditions for this important group of care providers. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE The prevalence of turnover intention is relatively high among intensive care nurses. Nurse managers should take this intention seriously, as the intention to leave may lead to an actual decision to leave the profession.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the intention to leave the profession and its related factors among nurses in Kermanshah, western Iran. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. METHODS A total of 377 nurses were enrolled in a stratified random sampling method. Data were collected by the Anticipated Turnover Scale and a sociodemographic information form. and analysed by descriptive and inferential statistics (logistic regression analysis). RESULTS The results showed that 49.6% (n = 187) of nurses tended to leave the profession and the mean score of intention to leave was 36.6 ± 0.5 of 60. There were no statistically significant differences between nurses who intended to leave and those who did not in terms of age, marital status, gender, type of employment, type of shift and work experience. But a statistically significant association was found between workplace (p = 0.041, adjusted OR = 2.07) and job title (p = 0.016, adjusted OR = 0.58) and intention to leave the profession. Abstract
BACKGROUND Intensive care unit (ICU) nurses are at an increased risk of burnout and may have an intention-to-leave their jobs. The COVID-19 pandemic may increase this risk. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to describe the prevalence of burnout risk and intention-to-leave the job and nursing profession among ICU nurses and to analyse the relationships between these variables and the work environment after two years of the COVID-19 pandemic. DESIGN A national cross-sectional survey of all nurses working in Belgian ICUs was conducted between December 2021 and January 2022 during the 4th and 5th waves of the COVID-19 pandemic in Belgium. The Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index (PES-NWI) was used to measure the work environment, intention-to-leave the hospital and/or the profession was assessed. The risk of burnout was assessed using the Maslach Burnout Inventory scale including emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation, and reduced personal accomplishment. SETTING Nurses in 78 out of 123 Belgian hospital sites with an ICU participated in the survey. PARTICIPANTS 2321 out of 4851 nurses (47.8%) completed the entire online survey. RESULTS The median overall risk of burnout per hospital site (high risk in all three subdimensions) was 17.6% [P25: 10.0 - P75: 28.8] and the median proportion of nurses with a high risk in at least one subdimension of burnout in Belgian ICUs was 71.6% [56.7-82.7]. A median of 42.9% [32.1-57.1] of ICU nurses stated that they intended-to-leave the job and 23.8% [15.4-36.8] stated an intent-to-leave the profession. The median overall score of agreement with the presence of positive aspects in the work environment was 49.0% [44.8-55.8]. Overall, nurses working in the top 25% of best-performing hospital sites with regard to work environment had a statistically significant lower risk of burnout and intention-to-leave the job and profession compared to those in the lowest performing 25% of hospital sites. Patient-to-nurse ratio in the worst performing quartile was associated with a higher risk for emotional exhaustion (OR = 1.53, 95% CI:1.04-2.26) and depersonalisation (OR = 1.48, 95% CI:1.03-2.13) and intention-to-leave the job (OR = 1.46, 95% CI:1.03-2.05). CONCLUSIONS In this study, a high prevalence of burnout risk and intention-to-leave the job and nursing profession was observed after two years of the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, there was substantial variation across hospital sites which was associated with the quality of the work environment. Abstract
BACKGROUND Communication among interprofessional healthcare worker teams is critical to ensure a thriving and resilient workforce. We will evaluate the implementation and effectiveness of the Alda Healthcare Experience (AHE), a novel medical improvisation (improv) workshop designed to improve interprofessional communication skills among healthcare professionals. The AHE workshop includes a two-hour experiential training workshop led by an improv specialist and a clinical co-facilitator. In July 2022 we began implementing the AHE workshop by training 18 clinical co-facilitators who will co-facilitate the workshops for 550 healthcare workers from five hospital departments at Stony Brook University Hospital over the course of a year and a half. Using mixed-methods, we will conduct an Effectiveness-Implementation Hybrid Design project that includes an outcome evaluation (effectiveness) and a process evaluation (implementation). METHODS Our outcome evaluation will assess the impact of the AHE workshop on short- and long-term improvement in interprofessional communication, stress, and professional fulfillment. The process evaluation component will examine programmatic, organizational, and individual facilitators or barriers to effective implementation of the AHE workshop. Qualitative methods will include dimensional analysis employing individual interviews of 20-40 AHE Project Participants, 5-10 Selected Informants, and all the clinical co-facilitators. Quantitative methods will use a quasi-experimental longitudinal design with an intervention group and surveillance of a control group (wait-list) and repeated assessments using validated instruments measuring communications skills, professional fulfillment, stress, burnout, uncertainty tolerance, and teamwork. DISCUSSION Effective and efficient communication within healthcare teams is fundamental to building team cohesion that, in turn, supports individual resilience and builds positive organizational culture. The AHE program is an innovative approach to improve interprofessional healthcare communication and reduce healthcare worker burnout. In addition to institutional buy-in, rigorous evaluations of medical improv programs are necessary as a critical step in making such programs scalable. TRIAL REGISTRATION N/A.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the communicative factors enacted by supervisors’ leadership, including supervisors’ perceived communication competence and workers’ communication satisfaction with their supervisors that predict employees’ feeling of burnout. Employees who were employed on a full-time basis for at least 1 year ( N = 166) completed a cross-sectional, online survey about interactions with their supervisors. Results from the path analysis indicated that both task- and relational-leadership were positively associated with communication competence. Only relational leadership was positively associated with communication satisfaction. In turn, communication satisfaction predicted decreased employee emotional exhaustion and depersonalization and increased personal accomplishment. Taken together, the findings from the current study suggest the importance of relationship-building between supervisors and employees to decrease employee burnout. Limitations and future research are addressed.

Abstract
Multidisciplinary collaboration is the hallmark of quality critical care. Prior studies have shown that nurses and physicians have different perceptions on communication and collaboration in the ICU. The Covid-19 pandemic has served to both strain and strengthen relationships between nurses and resident physicians in the ICU. This study used a survey-based approach sought to identify the similarities and differences between perception of collaboration between ICU nurses and resident physicians taking care of patients during the pandemic, and to identify whether they felt that the pandemic impacted the collaborative spirit of critical care. Although findings from this study suggest that overall residents and nurses perceive collaboration similarly, the COVID-19 pandemic may be differentially affecting the interdisciplinary dynamics of the ICU.

The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons is dedicated to empowering registered veterinary nurses (RVNs) and ensuring that they are valued members of the workforce within the United Kingdom. However, this is not always reported by the RVNs themselves, who state that although they derive satisfaction from working with animals and within a profession that makes a difference, there are areas in which they are not currently satisfied, such as pay scale and recognition. Responses to a questionnaire were analyzed using a mixed-methods design to determine current factors affecting job satisfaction utilizing a deductive and inductive approach. The questionnaire reached 205 RVNs currently working in practice within the UK; respondents were divided between remaining at their current practice (n = 101) and finding alternative employment (n = 80). Those who stated that they were happy in their job role were more likely to want to remain there. Themes relating to positive and negative job satisfaction were reported and used to devise strategies employers and employees could use to increase or maintain RVNs' overall satisfaction. More focus is needed on support and communication within veterinary practices, support for appropriate delegation linked to recognition of the RVN role, and support from educators to prepare students for the RVN role. Although the questionnaire did not reach the targeted sample size, responses agree with previous data indicating that changes made to the RVN role in the UK have not sufficiently improved job satisfaction scores.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To explore gender and occupational role impact on work-related Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, burnout and global functioning in a sample of emergency healthcare workers. DESIGN A cross-sectional study. PARTICIPANTS/SETTING 126 healthcare workers of the Emergency Department, including Intensive Care Unit, Emergency Room and Emergency Medicine, of a major University Hospital in central Italy were recruited. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Participants were assessed by means of the: Trauma and Loss Spectrum-Self Report (TALS-SR) to explore Post-Traumatic Stress Spectrum Symptoms, Professional Quality of Life (ProQOL) Scale to assess Compassion Satisfaction, Burnout and Compassion Fatigue and Work and Social Adjustment Scale (WSAS) to measure global functioning. RESULTS The present findings showed females were more prone to develop Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms, particularly re-experiencing (p = .010) and hyperarousal (p = .026) symptoms and medical doctors reporting higher Burnout (p < .001) and lower Compassion Satisfaction (p = .009) mean scores than nurses. Higher levels of functioning impairment emerged amongst medical doctors rather than nurses, in both social (p = .029) and private (p = .020) leisure activities. Linear correlations highlighted relationships between the TALS-SR, ProQOL and WSAS scores. Finally, medical doctor status was significantly associated with lower Compassion Satisfaction (p = .029) and higher Burnout (p = .015). CONCLUSION Our results highlight high post-traumatic stress symptoms and burnout levels in emergency healthcare workers with a relevant impact of female gender and occupational role, supporting the need for preventive strategies, also in light of the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
Nursing professionals are constantly exposed to several risk factors and high levels of stress that can affect their mental, emotional, and physical health, which can trigger burnout syndrome. This article aims to use bibliometric analysis to investigate burnout research trends among nursing professionals worldwide and to compare the contributions of different countries/institutions, scientific journals, authors, keywords, and citations. A bibliometric study was performed using the Scopus and Web of Science databases, in the period up to November 2021, aiming to search original and review articles in the English language regarding burnout in nursing professionals. The analysis was performed with a sample of 1406 articles. The most cited article indicated that 43% of nurses had high burnout scores, and a similar percentage were dissatisfied with their work. The most productive and most cited country in the world was the United States of America. Regarding the 10 most cited documents, there were no studies that could provide interventions to reduce burnout in nursing professionals, which can result in a need to develop studies on prevention capable of mitigating the problem, in view of the impacts generated on their mental, emotional, and physical health.

Abstract
This present study investigates the relationship between transformational leadership, learning culture, job satisfaction, and organizational citizenship behavior. In addition, it also examines the mediating role of learning culture and job satisfaction on transformational leadership and organizational citizenship behavior. This study utilized online questionnaires to collect data from nurses in a public hospital in Indonesia. Partial least square (PLS) was used as an analysis tool for 205 collected data. The findings indicated that transformational leadership did not significantly affect organizational citizenship behavior, but this has substantial implications for learning culture and job satisfaction. Both learning culture and job satisfaction significantly and positively predict organizational citizenship behavior. In addition, learning culture and job satisfaction act as perfect mediators between transformational leadership and organizational citizenship behavior. This study suggests leaders to maximize a systematic learning program and to pay attention to the nurses’ job satisfaction rate to improve organizational citizenship behavior. The findings also provide learning culture and job satisfaction as critical factors, directly and indirectly, in motivating employees to perform organizational citizenship behavior.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Frequent exposure to patient distress is associated with a higher prevalence of clinician distress and burnout. Patients with chronic pain often present with high levels of emotional distress. The current study examined the prevalence of burnout symptoms among a multidisciplinary sample of pain clinicians in Australia, the relationship between clinician confidence managing emotions and symptoms of burnout, and clinicians' perspectives on sources of stress and wellbeing at work. One hundred seventy-six clinicians from 58 multidisciplinary pain clinics across Australia completed a survey including the 22-item Maslach Burnout Inventory, a measure of clinician confidence managing patient emotions and their own emotions, and open-ended questions probing clinician perspectives on sources of stress and wellbeing at work. High levels of emotional exhaustion and depersonalisation were reported by 21.6% and 14.2% of respondents, respectively. These burnout symptoms were predicted by clinician confidence managing their own emotions. Low levels of personal accomplishment were reported by 18.8% of respondents and were predicted by clinician confidence managing patients' emotions. Consistent with these quantitative findings, qualitative data revealed that emotionally challenging patient encounters were common sources of stress. Working with a multidisciplinary team and supportive relationships with colleagues were commonly reported sources of clinician wellbeing. The results of this study are discussed in light of previous reports of burnout in pain medicine physicians. Implications for clinician training in pain management and the prevention of burnout in pain clinicians are discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Burnout is a psychological, work-related syndrome associated with long-term exposure to emotional and interpersonal stressors in the workplace. Burnout syndrome in nurses is often caused by an imbalance between work requirements and preparation and fitness for work, a lack of control, insufficient performance recognition and a prolonged exposure to stress. AIM The aims of this study were to explore the associations between levels of burnout syndrome, coping mechanisms and job satisfaction in critical care nurses in multivariate modelling process. A specific aim was also to explore whether coping and job satisfaction in critical care nurses are gender related. METHODS A cross-sectional multicentre study was conducted in a convenience sample of 620 critical care nurses from five university hospitals in Croatia in 2017. The data were collected using the Maslach Burnout Inventory and the Ways of Coping and Job Satisfaction Scale together with the nurses' demographic profiles and were analysed using a multivariable model. RESULTS The results showed no significant association between gender, coping mechanisms and job satisfaction. However, significant negative associations between burnout and job satisfaction (OR = 0.01, 95%CI = 0.00-0.02, p < 0.001) and positive association between burnout and passive coping (OR = 9.93, 95%CI = 4.01-24.61, p < 0.001) were found. CONCLUSION The association between job satisfaction and burnout in nurses urges hospital management teams to consider actions focused on job satisfaction, probably modifications of the work environment. Given that passive coping may increase the incidence of burnout, it is recommendable for active coping to be implemented in nurses' training programmes as an essential element of capacity building aimed at reducing the incidence of burnout in nurses.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Burnout is a global work-related phenomenon. Intensive care unit (ICU) nurses are at risk of burnout and the COVID-19 pandemic may increase this risk. The objectives of this study were to assess the prevalence of burnout risk and identify risk factors among ICU nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY Web-based survey performed during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in French speaking Belgium. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Risk of burnout was assessed with the Maslach Burnout Inventory scale. RESULTS A total of 1135 ICU nurses responded to the questionnaire. The overall prevalence of burnout risk was 68%. A total of 29% of ICU nurses were at risk of depersonalisation (DP), 31% of reduced personal accomplishment (PA), and 38% of emotional exhaustion (EE). A 1:3 nurse-to-patient ratio increased the risk of EE (OR = 1.77, 95% CI: 1.07-2.95) and DP (OR = 1.38, 95% CI: 1.09-2.40). Those who reported having a higher perceived workload during the COVID-19 pandemic were at higher risk for all dimensions of burnout. Shortage of personal protective equipment increased the risk of EE (OR = 1.78, 95% CI: 1.35-3.34) and nurses who reported having symptoms of COVID-19 without being tested were at higher risk of EE (OR = 1.40, 95% CI: 1.68-1.87). CONCLUSIONS Two-thirds of ICU nurses were at risk of burnout and this risk was associated with their working conditions during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. We recommend monitoring the risk of burnout and implementing interventions to prevent and manage it, taking into account the factors identified in this study.

Abstract
Background: Patient safety culture is associated with the values, attitudes, competencies and behaviors that support the safe conduct of individual or group activities in hospitals and other health organizations. Safety culture is influenced by various factors, one of which is communication, which plays a significant role in health services. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the relationship between nurse communication satisfaction and the quality of patient safety culture in hospitals. Design and Methods: This is a cross-sectional design with the proportional random sampling method used to data from 51 nurses, which was analyzed using the Spearman rank test. The majority of the nurses were female, between 20-30 years old, with 1-5 years working experience. Results: The results showed a significant relationship between nurse communication satisfaction and the quality of patient safety culture. Furthermore, the higher the nurses’ level of communication satisfaction, the better the applied quality of patient safety culture (r = 0.338). Conclusions: Nurse communication satisfaction affects the provision of effective health care, with the ability to create good cooperative relationships and foster trust between professions in order to improve the quality of service delivery and patient safety. Significance for public health Inadequate communication between nurses and other health workers causes sentinel incidents in health services. This also contributes to job dissatisfaction, which tends to affect the quality of care and patient safety. One of the important factors affecting the quality of health services is by applying a patient safety culture. For instance, positive perceptions were associated with a lower incidence of adverse events in patients. It is important to analyze the determinants of patient safety culture is applicable in all health care settings. Therefore, this study describes the relationship between nurse communication satisfaction and patient safety culture.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate literature on the importance of good communication between managers and nurses, and its influence on nurses and patient care. BACKGROUND In the nursing scenario, concepts such as engagement and job satisfaction are tied to manager communication and influence the care provided (Kunie et al., 2017). It is crucial to recognize the importance of manager communication on the nurses and patient care. The evaluation was guided by this question: in the review of post-2014 quantitative studies, is there evidence that nurse managers with high communication competence have better patient/staff outcomes than those with lower competencies? EVALUATION We evaluated current research through an evidence review on the day-to-day influence of nurse manager communication. We conducted our search using common health databases. Since the American Organization for Nurse Leadership developed nurse manager competencies in 2014, we only included articles published after that year. Further inclusion criteria included primary, quantitative and peer-reviewed research. KEY ISSUES Thirty articles remained after the application of inclusion/exclusion criteria with five themes emerging: patient safety and quality, job satisfaction, leadership styles, innovative practice and general management skills. CONCLUSION Research associates positive patient and staff outcomes with a leader who exhibits communication competences. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT Assessment of current competence levels in communication in nurse managers is needed. Education for improving communication skills is also needed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In consideration of the current nursing shortage in Saudi Arabia, we aimed to investigate the association among perceptions of work environment, communication satisfaction, and intentions to quit nursing profession among nurses. In addition, we aimed to investigate the mediating effect of communication satisfaction on the association between nurses' perception of work environment and their intentions to quit nursing profession. METHODS This predictive correlational study was conducted at one of the major hospitals in Saudi Arabia from January 2020 to March 2020. It included a convenience sample of 367 full-time registered nurses who completed three types of close-ended questionnaires. We used IBM SPSS version 24.0 to analyze the collected data. Regression analyses were used to test the study's hypotheses. All regression assumptions were assessed and confirmed. Significance for all tests was set at p ≤ .05. RESULTS The findings indicated an affirmative association between work environment perception and communication satisfaction (b = .764, p < .05) among nurses. In addition, findings showed that work environment perception (b = -.187, p < .05) and communication satisfaction (b = -.226, p < .05) have negative impacts on the nurses' intentions to quit; indicating that as work environment perception or communication satisfaction increases, the intention to quit decreases among nurses. Further, a mediation effect of communication satisfaction on the relationship between work environment perception and intention to quit was confirmed. CONCLUSION This study presents a novel conceptual framework developed based on the literature about the predisposing factors for nurses' intentions to quit nursing profession. Our results suggest that work environment perception and communication satisfaction among the most contributing factors for nurses resignation. Effective communication was established as a crucial factor for establishing attractive and healthy working environment. Nursing managers can benefit by applying these findings to develop appropriate strategies to inhibit the shortage of nurses in Saudi Arabia.

Background: Firefighters, paramedics, specialized nurses working in Intensive Care Units (ICUs), Operating Rooms (OR), and Emergency Rooms (ER), police officers and military personnel are more frequently exposed to potentially traumatic events than the general population; they are considered high-risk professionals. To reduce the risk of traumatization it is of great importance to be embedded in a social environment with supportive relationships. Methods: We performed a systematic review (based on the PRISMA-Guidelines) looking for social connections within the environment in which high-risk professionals are embedded (work, home, community), to obtain evidence on the impact of these connections on the risk of traumatization. Additionally, we aim to identify relevant supportive relationships in the professionals' environments. We identified the relevant scientific literature by searching, without time, and language restriction, five electronic bibliographic databases: MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Sociological Abstracts, CINAHL, and Web of Science. These databases were last searched in January 2019. Results: A qualitative analysis of the 89 eligible (out of 9,047 screened) studies shows that for firefighters, paramedics, and emergency nurses social connections in their work environment are predominantly supportive relationships and may protect them against traumatization. In other occupations (OR-nurses, ICU-nurses, police officers), however, social connections at work are not only a source of support but are also a source of stress. For military personnel study results are inconclusive as to whether their social connections at work or at home support them against traumatization. In so far as connections are supportive, their sources vary greatly from one occupational group to another; they differ between work vs. home as well as within work between peers vs. supervisor. Conclusions: Being embedded in a social environment, i.e., having social connections, is important but not always sufficient to protect high-risk professionals against traumatization. For, while these connections may be the antecedents of supportive relationships, they can also be the antecedents of damaging relationships. Additionally, the sources of supportive relationships differ among groups. This suggests that knowledge of how the social structures of the occupational groups differ may increase our understanding of the impact of social connections and relationships, including socialization, on the risk of traumatization of high-risk professionals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The nursing profession still needs more attention from decision-makers to enhance satisfaction and commitment in the work environment. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES This study aims to explore the perceived level of job rotation, job satisfaction, job commitment, job turnover and job conflict among nurses who previously had job rotation experience in Jordan. The study also investigates the correlation between studied variables and job rotation approach based on the type of hospitals. Furthermore, it also evaluates the contribution of job rotation, job commitment and many demographic factors in predicting job satisfaction among nurses who had job rotation experience in Jordan. DESIGN The study adopted the cross-sectional survey design of the correlational type. METHODS The study was performed on a stratified convenience sample of 786 nurses from five hospitals in Jordan. The scales used to explore the perceived level of studied variables were obtained from previously published studies, translated to Arabic language and then checked for validity and reliability before being used. RESULTS Results show that job rotation, job satisfaction, job commitment, job turnover and job conflict are all found to be at high levels. Job rotation approach among nurses seems necessary since job satisfaction and job commitment are positively correlated with job rotation. Also, job commitment, job rotation and gender are identified as significant predictors of job satisfaction among nurses in Jordan. CONCLUSION Nurses who experienced job rotation are found have high levels of job satisfaction and job commitment. However, job turnover is also found to be at high level which should be emphasised. Nurse leaders are advised to apply the job rotation approach by moving nurses between different departments in a planned manner to increase the level of job satisfaction and job commitment.

Abstract
This article describes the development and subsequent testing of scales representing functions and features of school communication among staff in Australian primary schools using the Organisational Communication in Primary Schools Questionnaire (OCPSQ). The OCPSQ was developed to measure aspects of communication occurring vertically between school leadership and staff members and horizontally among staff members. Elements of classical, human relations, and cultural theories were used to guide questionnaire development. Items were developed to represent theorised communication constructs derived from previous literature. Exploratory factor analysis was used to identify the underlying structure of aspects of communication. Confirmatory factor analysis was employed as a validation of the OCPSQ and its constructs. An interpretable ten-factor solution, representing salient functions and features of organisational communication, was established. Scales generated by the OCPSQ were found to have high reliabilities. The scales represented supportive, directive, cultural, and democratic functions, as well as features of communication relating to openness and load.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has severely affected ICUs and critical care health-care providers (HCPs) worldwide. RESEARCH QUESTION How do regional differences and perceived lack of ICU resources affect critical care resource use and the well-being of HCPs? STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS Between April 23 and May 7, 2020, we electronically administered a 41-question survey to interdisciplinary HCPs caring for patients critically ill with COVID-19. The survey was distributed via critical care societies, research networks, personal contacts, and social media portals. Responses were tabulated according to World Bank region. We performed multivariate log-binomial regression to assess factors associated with three main outcomes: limiting mechanical ventilation (MV), changes in CPR practices, and emotional distress and burnout. RESULTS We included 2,700 respondents from 77 countries, including physicians (41%), nurses (40%), respiratory therapists (11%), and advanced practice providers (8%). The reported lack of ICU nurses was higher than that of intensivists (32% vs 15%). Limiting MV for patients with COVID-19 was reported by 16% of respondents, was lowest in North America (10%), and was associated with reduced ventilator availability (absolute risk reduction [ARR], 2.10; 95% CI, 1.61-2.74). Overall, 66% of respondents reported changes in CPR practices. Emotional distress or burnout was high across regions (52%, highest in North America) and associated with being female (mechanical ventilation, 1.16; 95% CI, 1.01-1.33), being a nurse (ARR, 1.31; 95% CI, 1.13-1.53), reporting a shortage of ICU nurses (ARR, 1.18; 95% CI, 1.05-1.33), reporting a shortage of powered air-purifying respirators (ARR, 1.30; 95% CI, 1.09-1.55), and experiencing poor communication from supervisors (ARR, 1.30; 95% CI, 1.16-1.46). INTERPRETATION Our findings demonstrate variability in ICU resource availability and use worldwide. The high prevalence of provider burnout and its association with reported insufficient resources and poor communication from supervisors suggest a need for targeted interventions to support HCPs on the front lines.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study investigated organizational communication satisfaction and safety climate among perianesthesia care unit (PACU) nurses and factors affecting safety climate. DESIGN A cross-sectional study of 103 registered nurses currently working in PACUs in Korea. METHODS Organizational communication satisfaction was measured using the Communication Satisfaction Questionnaire, and safety climate was assessed using the Safety Attitudes Questionnaire-Korean version 2. Additional questions covered the demographics of the respondents and the characteristics of the hospital where they worked. FINDINGS Factors affecting teamwork climate included communication climate and horizontal informal communication. Safety climate was affected by media quality and organizational integration; job satisfaction by working in secondary hospitals, communication climate, and media quality; perception of management by working in public hospitals, media quality, and personal feedback; and working conditions by working in public hospitals, media quality, and personal feedback. CONCLUSIONS The results show that Korean PACU nurses experience poorer safety climate compared with other countries. One suggestion is to enhance nurses' satisfaction using organizational communication (eg, by developing effective communication media that satisfy users) and to promote communication at an organizational level so that individual health care professionals are aware of their organizations' vision and policies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Burnout is a maladaptive response to work-related stress that is associated with negative consequences for patients, clinicians, and the health care system. Critical care nurses are at especially high risk for burnout. Previous studies of burnout have used survey methods that simultaneously measure risk factors and outcomes of burnout, potentially introducing common method bias. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the frequency of burnout and individual and organizational characteristics associated with burnout among critical care nurses across a national integrated health care system using data from an annual survey and methods that avoid common method bias. METHODS A 2017 survey of 2352 critical care nurses from 94 sites. Site-level workplace climate was assessed using 2016 survey data from 2191 critical care nurses. RESULTS Overall, one-third of nurses reported burnout, which varied significantly across sites. In multilevel analysis, workplace climate was the strongest predictor of burnout (odds ratio [OR], 2.20; 95% CI, 1.50-3.22). Other significant variables were overall hospital quality (OR, 1.44; 95% CI, 1.05-1.99), urban location (OR, 1.93; 95% CI, 1.09-3.42), and nurse tenure (OR, 2.11; 95% CI, 1.44-3.10). In secondary multivariable analyses, workplace climate subthemes of perceptions of workload and staffing, supervisors and senior leadership, culture of teamwork, and patient experience were each significantly associated with burnout. CONCLUSIONS Drivers of burnout are varied, yet interventions frequently target only the individual. Results of this study suggest that in efforts to reduce burnout, emphasis should be placed on improving local workplace climate.

Abstract
Nursing retention and turnover impacts health care on many facets; pressures are increasing to provide quality care in a cost-effective manner to a satisfied patient with an engaged staff as defined by the Quadruple Aim. Retention of experienced staff nurses is paramount as the nursing profession enters another shortage era, which leads to impact on patient safety and quality of care. The purpose of this nurse retention evidence-based practice guideline is to provide strategies for first line nurse managers in various health care settings to use in enhancing job satisfaction and decreasing turnover of staff nurses. Interventions are focused on three areas that are beyond compensation issues and are within the purview of nurse managers: (a) autonomy; (b) recognition; and (c) communication. Abstract
This study was intended to confirm the structural relationship between clinical nurse communication skills, problem-solving ability, understanding of patients’ conditions, and nurse’s perception of professionalism. Due to changes in the healthcare environment, it is becoming difficult to meet the needs of patients, and it is becoming very important to improve the ability to perform professional nursing jobs to meet expectations. In this study method, structural model analysis was applied to identify factors influencing the perception of professionalism in nurses. The subjects of this study were 171 nurses working at general hospitals in city of Se, Ga, and Geu. Data analysis included frequency analysis, identification factor analysis, reliability analysis, measurement model analysis, model fit, and intervention effects. In the results of the study, nurse’s perception of professionalism was influenced by factors of communication skills and understanding of the patient’s condition, but not by their ability to solve problems. Understanding of patient’s condition had a mediating effect on communication skills and nursing awareness. Communication skills and understanding of the patient’s condition greatly influenced the nurse’s perception of professionalism. To improve the professionalism of clinical nurses, nursing managers need to emphasize communication skills and understanding of the patient’s condition. The purpose of this study was to provide a rationale for developing a program to improve job skills by strengthening the awareness of professional positions of clinical nurses to develop nursing quality of community.

Abstract
AIMS To explore the differences in organisational communication satisfaction between ward paediatric nurses and middle managers, and to assess whether there is a difference in organisational communication satisfaction between paediatric nurses and middle managers with different educational levels, years of nursing and managerial experience, contracted hours, area of work, age and gender. BACKGROUND Previous studies reported a connection between job satisfaction, work commitment and organisational communication; however, nurses' and nursing middle managers' satisfaction with organisational communication has not been extensively studied in recent years and not at all among paediatric nurses. METHODS A cross-sectional quantitative research design using online and hard copy self-reported questionnaires was used. Data were collected at one point in time from paediatric nurses and middle (nursing) managers working in a tertiary paediatric hospital in Australia. Statistical methods were employed for data analysis. RESULTS The middle management group were significantly more dissatisfied with organisational communication than the paediatric ward nurse group. Middle managers were found in this study to effectively manage and maintain communication lines with the personnel who reported to them; however, communication within the management cohort itself was found to be suboptimal. CONCLUSION Further research to understand how horizontal and vertical communications at the nurse manager and executive level can be optimised is required. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT It is anticipated that the findings from this study may increase the understanding of communication satisfaction between paediatric nurses and middle managers. The study has highlighted the need for improvement with information flow in the management cohort with the addition of extra managerial support and empowerment.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Burnout, intention to leave and ultimately shortage of skilled nurses are associated with poor practice environments; however, in Iran comprehensive data are unavailable. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between the nursing professional practice environment with nurses' burnout and intention to leave in intensive care units, using structural equation modelling analysis. METHODS This cross-sectional, multi-centred study was conducted among 320 nurses in twenty ICUs of five teaching hospitals affiliated with Shiraz University of Medical Sciences from September 2018 to June 2019. Valid measurement instruments including Nursing Professional Practice Environment Questionnaire (NPPEQ), Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and Anticipated Turnover Scale (ATS) were used for data collection. RESULTS Goodness-of-fit statistics confirmed a model with burnout dimensions in mediating positions between nursing professional practice environment dimensions and intention to leave, explaining 86.4% of the variation. CONCLUSION The results confirmed a theoretical model with structural the relationships among the nursing professional practice environment, burnout and intention to leave in nurses working in ICUs. In this model, burnout had a strong direct positive effect on intention to leave. The results can provide guidance for various stakeholders, such as health policymakers and nurse managers attempting to improve the quality of nurses' workplace, by drawing their attention to various factors influencing the retention of technically trained nurses in the critical care units.

Abstract
AIM To acquire an understanding of the emotional universe of intensive care unit nurses, working in Spain and the United Kingdom. METHODOLOGY The study used a hermeneutic study design and was set in an academic environment. Participants included nurses with clinical experience in intensive care units. Data were collected from seven in-depth interviews, four in Spanish and three in English. The analysis followed Ricoeur's Theory of Interpretation. The affective taxonomy Universe of Emotions, served to establish starting categories in it. FINDINGS Six themes were identified: 1) Critical patient care, critical context; 2) Intensive care… for whom?; 3) Nursing a dying patient; 4) In the company of others; 5) But… is it worth it? and 6) Emotional labour is crucial. These all describe different, multifaceted nurses' affective journeys, through categories such as: So little time-so much to do, Relatives, Young death vs. elderly death, Poorly-valued work and I'm in the profession I want to be. CONCLUSION The sociocultural context shared by the Spanish and English nurses working in intensive care units generates a complex emotional universe, with opposing affective experiences, such as those related to fear, anxiety, sadness, anger, shame, love, surprise and happiness.

Analysis of the Risk and Protective Roles of Work-Related and Individual Variables in Burnout Syndrome in Nurses. SUSTAINABILITY 2019. Abstract
Aims: Burnout syndrome is a phenomenon that is becoming ever more widespread, especially in workers such as nurses who have heavy workloads and time pressures. The progression of burnout syndrome has been shown to be related to both individual and work-related variables. The objective of this study is to examine the risk and protective roles played by work-related and personal variables, both sociodemographic and psychological, in the development of burnout in nurses. Method: The sample was composed of 1236 nurses aged between 21 and 57 years, with a mean age of 31.50 years (SD = 6.18). Women accounted for 84.5% (n = 1044), and the remaining 15.5% (n = 192) were men. Exploratory tests were performed to understand the relationships between burnout and other variables, and a binary logistic regression was conducted to understand the roles of these variables in the incidence of this syndrome. Lastly, a regression tree was constructed. Results: The results show that the sociodemographic variables examined are not related to the level of burnout in nurses. However, certain work-related variables, such as spending more time with colleagues and patients and reporting good-quality relationships, exhibit a negative relationship with the occurrence of burnout. Of the psychological variables, the stress factors conflict-social acceptance and irritability-tension-fatigue, as well as informative communication, are shown to be risk factors for the appearance of burnout in nurses. In contrast, the communication skills factor, empathy, and energy-joy exert a protective function. Conclusion: Identifying the variables that influence the occurrence of burnout syndrome and understanding the manner in which they exert their influence are key elements in the development of effective prevention and intervention of burnout in nursing.

Abstract
Job-related burnout has been reported by intensive care nurses worldwide; this study was performed to examine burnout in intensive care unit bedside nurses and nurse technicians in Brazil. A cross-sectional survey that included the Practice Environment Scale and the Maslach Burnout Inventory was completed by 209 nurses and nurse technicians working in 4 Brazilian intensive care units in 3 teaching hospitals. Compared with nurse technicians, nurses reported higher levels of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, and a lower level of personal accomplishment. A 1-unit increase in the quality of nurse practice environment was associated with a decrease in high levels of emotional exhaustion and low levels of personal accomplishment. Each additional patient added to a nurse’s workload was associated with an increase in high emotional exhaustion and low personal accomplishment. Approximately one-third of Brazilian nurses working in intensive care units report job-related burnout; the practice environment and staffing appear to be contributing factors.
