Abstract
In the present era, the treatment of skin-infected wounds and their associated inflammation constitutes a significant challenge. These infections have the potential to impede the healing process and become a life-threatening pathology, particularly due to the rise of bacterial resistance. Hydrogels could successfully address this issue due to their unique capabilities and versatility. Among them, natural polymer-based hydrogels are especially advantageous as they resemble the extracellular matrix (ECM) and mechanical properties of natural tissues. In this study, we propose a dual-action hydrogel composed of methacrylated gelatin as a matrix and a salicylate (Sal) anion-exchanged polymerizable ionic liquid (PIL) to achieve anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activities. This material facilitated cell attachment and colonization with mouse endothelial fibroblasts. A flow cytometry assay was conducted to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect, and demonstrated the differentiation of mouse macrophages to an M2 (reparative) phenotype. Therefore, the levels of TNF-α, interleukin-6 (IL-6), and interleukin (IL-10) were quantified to further evaluate this effect, demonstrating an inhibition on the pro-inflammatory ones. The inherent antibacterial capacity of the PIL was demonstrated against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, thereby corroborating its potential as a wound dressing. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported hydrogel incorporating an anion-exchanged polymerizable ionic liquid that is capable of promoting macrophage differentiation into a reparative phenotype, of reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines, and of simultaneously retaining antibacterial activity. These features open the gate to the potential application of this hydrogel as a wound dressing. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Bacterial wound infections may lead to severe problems due to their associate tissue inflammation and the emergence of bacterial resistance. In this sense, local therapies such as hydrogels have gathered much attention as alternative therapies for these pathologies. In this work, we have developed a natural polymer-based hydrogel copolymerized with a polymerizable ionic liquid containing salicylate as an anion. The hydrogel was shown to be biocompatible, and promoted macrophage differentiation to a reparative phenotype, while reducing the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Finally, the high antibacterial capability against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria makes it a promising candidate for use in wound dressings.

Abstract
Comparative analysis of macroscopic mechanical properties of a biodegradable polymer polypropylene carbonate (PPC) is carried out concerning two most commonly used, non-biodegradable synthetic polymers-high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and linear-low density polyethylene (LLDPE). Responses of the films of these polymers when subjected to mechanical and thermal stresses are analyzed. Response to tensile stress reveals the highest elongation at break (EB) in PPC films (396 ± 104 mm), compared to HDPE (26 ± 0.5 mm) and LLDPE (301 ± 143 mm), although the elastic modulus (YM) of PPC is around 50 ± 6 MPa, 3-fold lesser than LLDPE (YM = 153 ± 7 MPa) and 6-fold lesser than HDPE (YM = 305 ± 32 MPa). The plastic deformation response of PPC is intermediate to that of HDPE and LLDPE; initial strain softening is followed by strain hardening in LLDPE, a plateau region in PPC, and prolonged strain softening in HDPE. Crystalline domains in HDPE produce restriction on molecular motion. Crystallinity abruptly decreases by 70% in HDPE following a thermal quench, showing the possibility of free chain molecular mobility during plastic deformation. High correlation among Raman modes for all polymers reveals cooperative relaxation processes after thermal quench; C-C stretching modes and C-H bending, CH2wagging modes have Pearson's correlation coefficient 0.9. The integrated peak intensity and width of the C-C stretching Raman mode is 3-fold higher in PPC than HDPE after a thermal quench, showing enhanced molecular mobility and contributing modes in PPC. The peak width of this mode shows a strong negative correlation of -0.7 with the YM and a strong positive correlation of 0.6 with EB, showing that higher amorphicity leads to enhanced molecular mobility and EB at the cost of YM. This study reveals importance of molecular-scale response in governing the macroscopic properties of polymers.

Abstract
Biopolymers like starch, a renewable and widely available resource, are increasingly being used to fabricate the films for eco-friendly packaging solutions. Starch-based edible films offer significant advantages for food packaging, including biodegradability and the ability to extend shelf life. However, they also present challenges such as moisture sensitivity and limited barrier properties compared to synthetic materials. These limitations can be mitigated by incorporating bioactive components, such as antimicrobial agents or antioxidants, which enhance the film's resistance to moisture and improve its barrier properties, making it a more viable option for food packaging. This review explores the emerging field of starch-based sustainable edible films enhanced with bioactive components for food packaging applications. It delves into fabrication techniques, structural properties, and functional attributes, highlighting the potential of these innovative films to reduce environmental impact and preserve food quality. Key topics discussed include sustainability issues, processing methods, performance characteristics, and potential applications in the food industry. The review provides a comprehensive overview of current research and developments in starch-based edible films, presenting them as promising alternatives to conventional food packaging that can help reduce plastic waste and environmental impact.

Abstract
Currently, pathogenic microorganisms are becoming more active in public utility areas like parking lots and waste shelters due to the accumulation of organic waste. This uncontrolled waste leads to decay, altering its composition and presenting a microbiological risk to public health. Additionally, it emits unpleasant odors containing chemicals that irritate the mucous membranes, causing discomfort in the nose, throat, and eyes by stimulating the trigeminal nerve. These odors can have various negative effects on both quality of life and public health. The study investigated the physicochemical properties of oil composites enriched with natural additives and determined their effectiveness in reducing the intensity of nuisance odours. The research showed over 82% reduction in decaying meat odour and almost 65% reduction in ammonia odour. A higher impact of the given composites on reducing the odour from decaying meat than from ammonia was observed. This may be due to the biocidal properties of the additives used (turmeric, thymol, salicylic acid, hops and curly sorrel) and the higher intensity of ammonia odor compared to meat-derived odour. Despite the non-porous nature of the solids tested (with similar specific surface areas ranging from 0.66 to 0.88 m2/g), they were capable of sorbing NH3.

Abstract
Hydrogels from natural sources are attracting increasing interest due to their ability to protect biologically active molecules. Starch extracted from cassava tubers is a promising material for synthesizing these hydrogels. Copolymerization of cassava gum and incorporation of chlorhexidine digluconate (CLX) into the hydrogels is confirmed by changes in the crystallographic profile, as observed through X-ray diffraction, and a shift in the 1000 cm-1 band in the Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy spectrum. The differential scanning calorimetry reveals changes in the decomposition temperature of the synthesized hydrogels related to CLX volatility. Micrographs illustrate the material's porosity. Release tests indicate a constant linear release over 72 h, while antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans is satisfactory, with 100% effectiveness from 0.5% CLX and the formation of inhibition halos. Toxicity and biocompatibility studies show no cytotoxicity. The continuous release of chlorhexidine is promising for components of biomedical implants and applications as it can ensure antimicrobial action according to specific therapeutic needs.

Abstract
The widespread use of starch-based films is hindered by inadequate tensile strength and high water sensitivity. To address these limitations, a novel starch film with a dynamic network structure was produced via the dehydration-condensation reaction of N, N'-methylene diacrylamide (MBA) and microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). The improvement in mechanical properties was enhanced by the incorporation of MCC, which was achieved through intermolecular hydrogen bonding and chemical crosslinking. To verify the interactions among MCC, MBA, and starch, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and x-ray diffraction (XRD) were conducted. The results established the predicted interactions. The dynamic network structure of the film reduced the water absorption capacity (WAC) of starch and MCC hydroxyl groups, as confirmed by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). These analyses showed a restriction in the mobility of starch chains, resulting in a higher glass transition temperature (Tg) of 69.26 °C. The modified starch films exhibited excellent potential for packaging applications, demonstrating a higher contact angle (CA) of 89.63°, the lowest WAC of 4.73 g/g, and the lowest water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of 13.13 g/m2/d, along with improved mechanical properties and identical light transmittance compared to pure starch films.

Abstract
Three cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were prepared to reinforce sodium alginate (SA) films. This study investigated effects of aspect ratio (L/D) and surface charge of three CNCs (CCNC, MCNC, and WCNC) on the properties of films. At CNC concentrations ≤3 wt%, MCNC, with a medium L/D but the lowest surface charge density among the three CNCs, exhibited the highest efficiency in enhancing the Young's modulus and tensile strength of films. This indicated that, apart from L/D, CNC's surface charge density also affected its reinforcing effects in anionic SA-based films. Compared with other CNCs, MCNC with the lowest charge density exhibited weaker repulsion with SA, potentially contributing to stronger interfacial interactions between them. At concentrations >3 wt%, the reinforcing efficiency of MCNC was extremely close to that of WCNC, which had the highest L/D but medium charge density. This was possibly because, according to SEM results, MCNC with the lowest absolute value of zeta potential aggregated more severely than other CNCs. However, both MCNC and WCNC were consistently more efficient than CCNC. Moreover, FTIR results revealed that WCNC formed more hydrogen bonds with SA than other CNCs. Consequently, adding WCNC was more effective in reducing films' water vapor permeability and hydrophilicity.

Abstract
Imidazole (IM) and salicylic acid (SA) have a significant class among the medical compound. These are widely used as topical drugs like antifungal, antibacterial, anticancer, immunosuppressive agent, etc. These two bioactive organic moieties are combined by a weak hydrogen bond formed by hydrogen transfer. The charge transfer (CT) complex of acceptor (SA) and donor (IM), has been synthesized at room temperature in methanol and confirmed by signal-crystal XRD, conductance and UV-visible spectroscopy. The X-ray crystallography provides the original structural information of CT complex and displays the existence of N+-H--O- bond between IM and SA. The physical properties such as (ECT), (RN), (ID), (f), (D) and (Δ G0) along with molar extinction coefficient (εCT) and formation constant (KCT) were estimated through UV-visible spectroscopy. Job's method and Benesi-Hildebrand equation suggested 1:1 stoichiometry of ([IM]+[SA]-). The results indicate a complete transfer of hydrogen atom and CT complex formation with 1:1 molar ratio of IM and SA. Antimicrobial activity was veiled against different bacteria like Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus; and different fungi as Fusarium oxysporum, Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger by disc diffusion method. CT complex was also tested for cytotoxic activity against lung cancer cell lines in comparison to breast cancer cell lines. Molecular docking provides the information of binding of [(IM)+(SA)-] with the cancer marker (1M17), which has substantial application for drug designing. The investigational studies were supplemented through time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) using basis set B3LYP/6-311G**. Abstract
3D printing of pharmaceuticals offers a unique opportunity for long-term, sustained drug release profiles for an array of treatment options. Unfortunately, this approach is often limited by physical compounding or processing limitations. Modification of the active drug into a prodrug compound allows for seamless incorporation with advanced manufacturing methods that open the door to production of complex tissue scaffold drug depots. Here we demonstrate this concept using salicylic acids with varied prodrug structures for control of physical and chemical properties. The role of different salicylic acid derivatives (salicylic acid, bromosalicylic allyl ester, iodosalicylic allyl ester) and linker species (allyl salicylate, allyl 2-(allyloxy)benzoate, allyl 2-(((allyloxy)carbonyl)oxy)benzoate) were investigated using thiol-ene cross-linking in digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing to produce porous prodrug tissue scaffolds containing more than 50% salicylic acid by mass. Salicylic acid photopolymer resins were all found to be highly reactive (solidification within 5 s of irradiation at λ = 405 nm), while the cross-linked solids display tunable thermomechanical behaviors with low glass transition temperatures (Tgs) and elastomeric behaviors, with the carbonate species displaying an elastic modulus matching that of adipose tissue (approximately 65 kPa). Drug release profiles were found to be zero order, sustained release based upon hydrolytic degradation of multilayered scaffolds incorporating fluorescent modeling compounds, with release rates tuned through selection of the linker species. Cytocompatibility in 2D and 3D was further demonstrated for all species compared to polycarbonate controls, as well as salicylic acid-containing composites (physical incorporation), over a 2-week period using murine fibroblasts. The use of drugs as the matrix material for solid prodrug tissue scaffolds opens the door to novel therapeutic strategies, longer sustained release profiles, and even reduced complications for advanced medicine.

Abstract
The novel Mannich base benzimidazole derivative (CB-1), 1-((1H-benzo[d]imidazol-1-yl)(3-chlorophenyl)methyl)-3-phenylurea) has been designed and synthesized by reacting benzimidazole, 3-chloro benzaldehyde, and N-Phenyl urea. CB-1 has been characterized by UV- Visible, FTIR, and 1H NMR. CB-1 was explored to study the interaction with the most abundant blood protein which involved in the role of transport of molecules (drugs), human serum albumin (HSA). Fluorescence results are evident for the presence of both dynamic and static quenching mechanisms in the binding of CB-1 to HSA. Antimicrobial screening were carried out against three bacteria and three fungi pathogens employing disc diffusion method. Molecular docking using AutoDock Vina tool further confirms the experimental binding interactions obtained from fluorescence. Density functional theory (DFT) with B3LYP/6-311G++ basis set was used for correlating theoretical data and obtaining optimized structures of CB-1 along with reactants with molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) map and HOMO→LUMO energy gap calculation. Abstract
Physical and chemical cross-linked hydrogels combining N, N'-Methylenebisacrylamide (MBA)-grafted starch (MBAS) and sorbitol were successfully prepared and encapsulated with eugenol in this work. The dense porous structure with diameter of 10-15 μm and strong skeleton after restructuring inside the hydrogel was confirmed by SEM. The band shifts between 3258 cm-1 and 3264 cm-1 clarified the presence of a large number of hydrogen bonds in physical and chemical cross-linked hydrogels. The robust structure of the hydrogel was confirmed by mechanical and thermal property measurements. Molecular docking techniques were used to help understand the bridging pattern between three raw materials and to assess the advantageous conformation, which demonstrate sorbitol is beneficial to improve the characteristics of textural hydrogel by the formation of hydrogen bonds, creating a denser network, structural recombination and new intermolecular hydrogen bonds between starch and sorbitol afforded considerably junction zones. Compared to ordinary starch-based hydrogels, eugenol-loaded starch-sorbitol hydrogels (ESSG) exhibited a more attractive internal structure, swelling properties, viscoelasticity. Moreover, the ESSG showed excellent antimicrobial activity for typical undesired microorganisms in foods.

Abstract
Polysaccharides, due to their remarkable features, have gained significant prominence in the sustainable production of nanoparticles (NPs). High market demand and minimal production cost, compared to the chemically synthesised NPs, demonstrate a drive towards polysaccharide-based nanoparticles (PSNPs) benign to environment. Various approaches are used for the synthesis of PSNPs including cross-linking, polyelectrolyte complexation, and self-assembly. PSNPs have the potential to replace a wide diversity of chemical-based agents within the food, health, medical and pharmacy sectors. Nevertheless, the considerable challenges associated with optimising the characteristics of PSNPs to meet specific targeting applications are of utmost importance. This review provides a detailed compilation of recent accomplishments in the synthesis of PSNPs, the fundamental principles and critical factors that govern their rational fabrication, as well as various characterisation techniques. Noteworthy, the multiple use of PSNPs in different disciplines such as biomedical, cosmetics agrochemicals, energy storage, water detoxification, and food-related realms, is accounted in detail. Insights into the toxicological impacts of the PSNPs and their possible risks to human health are addressed, and efforts made in terms of PSNPs development and optimising strategies that allow for enhanced delivery are highlighted. Finally, limitations, potential drawbacks, market diffusion, economic viability and future possibilities for PSNPs to achieve widespread commercial use are also discussed.

Abstract
Starch is regarded as one of the most promising sustainable materials due to its abundant yield and excellent biodegradability. From the perspective of practical engineering applications, this paper systematically describes the development of starch-based bio-composites in the past decade. Packaging properties, processing characteristics, and current challenges for the efficient processing of starch-based bio-composites are reviewed in industrial packaging. Green coatings, binders, adsorbents, flocculants, flame retardants, and emulsifiers are used as examples to illustrate the versatility of starch-based bio-composites in chemical agent applications. In addition, the work compares the application of starch-based bio-composites in conventional spinning with emerging spinning technologies and describes the challenges of electrostatic spinning for preparing nanoscale starch-based fibers. In terms of flexible electronics, the starch-based bio-composites are regard as a solid polymer electrolyte and easily modified porous material. Moreover, we describe the applications of the starch-based gels in tissue engineering, controlled drug release, and medical dressings. Finally, the theoretical input and technical guidance in the advanced sustainable engineering application of the starch-based bio-composites are provided in the work.

Abstract
In order to find a non-enzymatically treated alternative wall material with effective encapsulation properties, and to reduce the use of conventional non-biodegradable plastics, a novel 3D-micronetwork porous starch (3D-MPS) was created via a modified sacrificial template method to encapsulate eugenol (3D-EMPS) and used to incorporate with TiO2-starch film, for significantly improving the performance of starch-based antibacterial film. At the template SiO2 nanoparticles concentration of 0.1 %, the 3D-MPS exhibited anticipated alveolate structure with internal aperture of approximately 10 μm confirmed by SEM. With addition of 3D-EMPS, higher tensile strength (29.70 Mpa) and water barrier property (924 g/cm2·24 h) of the composite film was obtained. Moreover, molecular docking technique was used to model the intermolecular forces, which showed that the major forces maintaining the internal bonding of the composite film were hydrogen bonding and the interaction between eugenol and 3D-MPS skeleton in 3D-EMPS. Meanwhile, the composite film demonstrated the expected eugenol retardation and antimicrobial capacity against S. aureus, E. coli, and B. subtilis. Finally, the composite films were used for evaluating the feasibility in the actual food, which largely extended its shelf life compared to the negative control. This high-performance film revealed their potential for packaging materials application.

Abstract
The anthocyanin-rich litchi shell extract (LE) was mixed with the matrix to prepare active/intelligent food packaging composite films. The microstructure and properties of composite films were characterized. The results showed that the composite films incorporated with LE had texture-oriented layered, compact, uniform cross-sections. The composite films with LE showed different degrees of red. The composite films had similar water vapor transmission rates (1.62-1.65 × 10-12 g·cm/cm2·Pa·s). However, gelatin/chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol/litchi shell extract (Gel/Csa/PVA/LE) film had better UV blocking rates (0-20 %), the best tensile strength (18.6 MPa) and elongation at break (116%). When the composite films monitored for fish freshness at 4 °C (10 d) and 25 °C (3 d), the Gel/Csa/PVA/LE film had the pH sensitivity to show an obvious color change at 25 °C, 1th day. The results suggested that the Gel/Csa/PVA/LE film could be applied to intelligent food packaging film to indicate the freshness of fish.

Abstract
Cassava starch is one of the most available and cost-effective biopolymers. This work aimed to apply a bibliometric methodology to identify the most impactful scientific data on cassava starch and its residues for food packaging in the last ten years. As a result, an increasing interest in this subject has been observed, mainly in the past five years. Among the 85 selected scientific publications, Brazil and China have been leading the research on starch-based films, accounting for 39 % of the total. The International Journal of Biological Macromolecules was the main scientific source of information. Besides cassava starch, 41.18 % of these studies added other biopolymers, 5.88 % added synthetic polymers, and 4.71 % added a combination of both. Studies analyzed suggested that different modifications in starch can improve films' mechanical and barrier properties. In addition, 52.94 % of articles evaluated the film's bioactivity. Still, only 37.65 % assessed the performance of those films as food packaging, suggesting that more studies should be conducted on assessing the potential of these alternative packages. Future research should consider scale-up methods for film production, including cost analysis, assessment life cycle, and the impact on the safety and quality of a broader range of foods.

Abstract
Microcapsules serve as a feasible formulation to load phenolic substances such as salicylic acid, a natural and safe antimicrobial agent. However, the antibacterial efficacy of salicylic acid microcapsules (SAMs) remains to be elucidated. Here, salicylic acid/β-cyclodextrin inclusion microcapsules were subjected to systematic antibacterial assays and preliminary antibacterial mechanism tests using Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus as target organisms. It was found that the core-shell rhomboid-shaped SAMs had a smooth surface. SAMs exhibited a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and a minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of 4 mg/mL against both bacteria. In the growth inhibition assay, 1/4 × MIC, 1/2 × MIC, and 1 × MIC of SAMs effectively retarded bacterial growth, and this effect was more prominent with the rise in the level of SAMs. Practically, SAMs possessed a rapid bactericidal effect at the 1 × MIC level with a reduction of more than 99.9% bacterial population within 10 min. A pronounced sterilization activity against E. coli and S. aureus was also observed when SAMs were embedded into hand sanitizers as antimicrobial agents. Moreover, exposure of both bacteria to SAMs resulted in the leakage of intracellular alkaline phosphatases and macromolecular substances (nucleic acids and proteins), which indicated the disruption of bacterial cell walls and cell membranes. In conclusion, SAMs were able to inactivate E. coli and S. aureus both in vitro and in situ, highlighting the promising utilization of this formulation for antimicrobial purposes in the area of food safety and public health.

Abstract
Inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) and natural antioxidant compounds are an emerging trend in the food industry. Incorporating these substances in biobased and biodegradable matrices as polysaccharides (e.g., starch, cellulose, and chitosan) and proteins has highlighted the potential in active food packaging applications due to more significant antimicrobial, antioxidant, UV blocking, oxygen scavenging, water vapor permeability effects, and low environmental impact. In recent years, the migration of metal NPs and metal oxides in food contact packaging and their toxicological potential have raised concerns about the safety of the nanomaterials. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the main biobased and biodegradable polymer nanocomposites, inorganic NPs, natural antioxidants, and their potential use in active food packaging. The intrinsic properties of NPs and natural antioxidant actives in packaging materials are evaluated to extend shelf-life, safety, and food quality. Toxicological and safety aspects of inorganic NPs are highlighted to understand the current controversy on applying some nanomaterials in food packaging. The synergism of inorganic NPs and plant-derived natural antioxidant actives (e.g., vitamins, polyphenols, and carotenoids) and essential oils (EOs) potentiated the antibacterial and antioxidant properties of biodegradable nanocomposite films. Biodegradable packaging films based on green NPs-this is biosynthesized from plant extracts-showed suitable mechanical and barrier properties and had a lower environmental impact and offered efficient food protection. Furthermore, AgNPs and TiO2 NPs released metal ions from packaging into contents insufficiently to cause harm to human cells, which could be helpful to understanding critical gaps and provide progress in the packaging field.

Abstract
Due to their complete non-biodegradability, current food packages have resulted in major environmental issues. Today’s smart consumer is looking for alternatives that are environmentally friendly, durable, recyclable, and naturally rather than synthetically derived. It is a well-established fact that complete replacement with environmentally friendly packaging materials is unattainable, and bio-based plastics should be the future of the food packaging industry. Natural biopolymers and nanotechnological interventions allow the creation of new, high-performance, light-weight, and environmentally friendly composite materials, which can replace non-biodegradable plastic packaging materials. This review summarizes the recent advancements in smart biogenic packaging, focusing on the shift from conventional to natural packaging, properties of various biogenic packaging materials, and the amalgamation of technologies, such as nanotechnology and encapsulation; to develop active and intelligent biogenic systems, such as the use of biosensors in food packaging. Lastly, challenges and opportunities in biogenic packaging are described, for their application in sustainable food packing systems.

Abstract
Nowadays, starch nanoparticles (SNPs) are drawing attention to the scientific community due to their versatility and wide range of applications. Although several works have extensively addressed the SNP production routes, not much is discussed about the SNPs modification techniques, as well as the use of modified SNPs in typical and unconventional applications. Here, we focused on the SNP modification strategies and characteristics and performance of the resulting products, as well as their practical applications, while pointing out the main limitations and recommendations. We aim to guide researchers by identifying the next steps in this emerging line of research. SNPs esterification and oxidation are preferred chemical modifications, which result in changes in the functional groups. Moreover, additional polymers are incorporated into the SNP surface through copolymer grafting. Physical modification of starch has demonstrated similar changes in the functional groups without the need for toxic chemicals. Modified SNPs rendered differentiated properties, such as size, shape, crystallinity, hydrophobicity, and Zeta-potential. For multiple applications, tailoring the aforementioned properties is key to the performance of nanoparticle-based systems. However, the number of studies focusing on emerging applications is fairly limited, while their applications as drug delivery systems lack in vivo studies. The main challenges and prospects were discussed.

Abstract
The call to use biodegradable, eco-friendly materials is urgent. The use of biopolymers as a replacement for the classic petroleum-based materials is increasing. Chitosan and starch have been widely studied with this purpose: to be part of this replacement. The importance of proper physical characterization of these biopolymers is essential for the intended application. This review focuses on characterizations of chitosan and starch, approximately from 2017 to date, in one of their most-used applications: food packaging for chitosan and as an adsorbent agent of pollutants in aqueous medium for starch.

Abstract
Hyaluronic acid (HA) solutions were crosslinked with divinyl sulfone (DVS) and subsequently loaded with antibiotic molecules to obtain biocompatible and antibacterial injectable hydrogels. The crosslinking degree of the hydrogels was modulated by varying the reaction time and the HA:DVS weight ratio. Synthesized HA-DVS hydrogels were characterized by their rheological properties, pore size, swelling capacity and hydrolytic and thermal degradation. Biocompatibility was assessed by measuring pH, osmolality and by in vitro cytotoxic assay. Acetyl salicylic (AAS) loaded hydrogels display anti-inflammatory properties in vitro, whereas cefuroxime (CFX), tetracycline (TCN) and amoxicillin (AMX) loaded hydrogels show in vitro antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. The combine use of antibiotics and AAS produces a synergic effect that reduces the S. aureus population up to a log10 reduction (R) of 5.55. Overall results show that antibiotic/AAS loaded HA-DVS hydrogels could be effectively used to combat S. aureus infections and to increase the antibacterial activity of antibiotics commonly used against S. aureus.

Antioxidant Films from Cassava Starch/Gelatin Biocomposite Fortified with Quercetin and TBHQ and Their Applications in Food Models. Polymers (Basel) 2021; 13:polym13071117. Abstract
Edible and active packaging are attractive for use in food packaging applications due to their functionality and sustainability. This research developed new antioxidant active food packaging materials from cassava starch/gelatin (7:3 w/w) composite films with varied antioxidant types (quercetin and tertiary butylhydroquinone (TBHQ)) and concentrations (0–200 mg/200 mL film-forming solution) and evaluated their properties. Antioxidant addition altered the mechanical and barrier properties of the films. At 34% relative humidity (RH), increasing the concentration of quercetin increased the tensile strength and decreased the elongation at break of the composite films. Increasing quercetin and TBHQ contents increased the film water solubility and water vapor transmission rate. Intermolecular interactions between the antioxidants and films, as found in Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra and XRD micrographs, were related to the changed film functionalities. In food application studies, the cassava starch/gelatin films containing quercetin and TBHQ retarded the oxidation of lard (more than 35 days) and delayed the redness discoloration of pork. Cassava starch/gelatin composite films integrated with quercetin and TBHQ can be utilized as active packaging that delays oxidation in foods.

Abstract
To maintain the quality of postharvest fruits continuously and meet the health requirements of consumers, a high barrier and long-lasting antibacterial polylactic acid film as packaging material was developed in this study. Polylactic acid-based antibacterial films incorporated with Cinnamaldehyde inclusions were used to achieve long-lasting antibacterial activity and improve the barrier properties. Cinnamaldehyde inclusions were prepared via the inclusion method and used as a sustained-release antibacterial agent and reinforcement to be incorporated into polylactic acid-based films within a concentration range of 0-30 wt%. The FT-IR spectrum demonstrated that the Cinnamaldehyde inclusions was physically interacting with PLA. The XRD results showed that the cinnamaldehyde inclusions at a concentration of 10 wt% enhanced the crystallinity of the antibacterial film. The oxygen and water vapor barrier properties of the film were respectively 14.29% and 12.38% higher than those of a pure PLA film. The tensile strength of the antibacterial film increased by 20%. And the antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Listeria monocytogenes was 100%. The release rate of cinnamaldehyde of the antibacterial film was slow and varied smoothly for 20 d.

Abstract
The use of advanced and eco-friendly materials has become a trend in the field of food packaging. Cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) were prepared from bleached bagasse pulp board by a mechanical grinding method and were used to enhance the properties of a chitosan/oregano essential oil (OEO) biocomposite packaging film. The growth inhibition rate of the developed films with 2% (w/w) OEO against E. coli and L. monocytogenes reached 99%. With the increased levels of added CNFs, the fibrous network structure of the films became more obvious, as was determined by SEM and the formation of strong hydrogen bonds between CNFs and chitosan was observed in FTIR spectra, while the XRD pattern suggested that the strength of diffraction peaks and crystallinity of the films slightly increased. The addition of 20% CNFs contributed to an oxygen-transmission rate reduction of 5.96 cc/m2·day and water vapor transmission rate reduction of 741.49 g/m2·day. However, the increase in CNFs contents did not significantly improve the barrier properties of the film. The addition of 60% CNFs significantly improved the barrier properties of the film to light and exhibited the lowest light transmittance (28.53%) at 600 nm. Addition of CNFs to the chitosan/OEO film significantly improved tensile strength and the addition of 60% CNFs contributed to an increase of 16.80 MPa in tensile strength. The developed chitosan/oregano essential oil/CNFs biocomposite film with favorable properties and antibacterial activity can be used as a green, functional material in the food-packaging field. It has the potential to improve food quality and extend food shelf life.
