Abstract
The wheat scab caused by Fusarium graminearum (F. graminearum) has seriously affected the yield and quality of wheat in China. In this study, gallic acid (GA), a natural polyphenol, was used to synthesize three azole-modified gallic acid derivatives (AGAs1-3). The antifungal activity of GA and its derivatives against F. graminearum was studied through mycelial growth rate experiments and field efficacy experiments. The results of the mycelial growth rate test showed that the EC50 of AGAs-2 was 0.49 mg/mL, and that of AGAs-3 was 0.42 mg/mL. The biological activity of AGAs-3 on F. graminearum is significantly better than that of GA. The results of field efficacy tests showed that AGAs-2 and AGAs-3 significantly reduced the incidence rate and disease index of wheat scab, and the control effect reached 68.86% and 72.11%, respectively. In addition, preliminary investigation was performed on the possible interaction between AGAs-3 and F. graminearum using density functional theory (DFT). These results indicate that compound AGAs-3, because of its characteristic of imidazolium salts, has potential for use as a green and environmentally friendly plant-derived antifungal agent for plant pathogenic fungi.

Abstract
The toxicity of copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) to aquatic animals, particularly their effects on the cardiovascular system, has not been thoroughly investigated. In the present study, zebrafish embryos were used as a model to address this issue. After exposure to different concentrations (0.01, 0.1, 1, and 3 mg/L) of CuNPs for 96 h (4 to 100 h post-fertilization), cardiac parameters of the heart rate (HR), end-diastolic volume (EDV), end-systolic volume (ESV), stroke volume (SV), ejection fraction (EF), and cardiac output (CO), and vascular parameters of the aortic blood flow velocity (ABFV) and aortic diameter (AD) were examined by a video-microscopic method. Morphologically, CuNPs induced concentration-dependent pericardial edema. Although CuNPs did not alter the HR, they significantly reduced the EDV, SV, and CO at ≥0.1 mg/L, the ESV and EF at 3 mg/L, the ABFV at ≥0.1 mg/L, and the AD at ≥1 mg/L. Transcript levels of several cardiac genes, nppa, nppb, vmhc, and gata4, were also examined. CuNPs significantly suppressed nppa and nppb at ≥0.1 mg/L, gata4 at ≥0.01 mg/L, and vmhc at 1 mg/L. This study demonstrated that CuNPs can induce cardiovascular toxicity at environmentally relevant concentrations during fish embryonic development and highlight the potential ecotoxicity of CuNPs to aquatic animals.

Abstract
Rice (Oryza sativa) being among the most important food crops in the world is also susceptible to various bacterial and fungal diseases that are the major stumbling blocks in the way of increased production and productivity. The bacterial leaf blight caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae and the sheath blight disease caused by Rhizoctonia solani are among the most devastating diseases of the rice crop. In spite of the availability of array of chemical control, there are chances of development of resistance. Thus, there is a need for the nanotechnological intervention for management of disease in the form of copper and silver nano-composites. The copper (CuNPs) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized using green route and characterized using different high throughput techniques, i.e., UV-Vis, FT-IR, DLS, XRD, FE-SEM, TEM. The particle size and zeta potential of synthesized CuNPs and AgNPs were found 273 nm and - 24.2 mV; 95.19 nm and - 25.5 mV respectively. The nanocomposite of CuNPs and AgNPs were prepared having particle size in the range of 375-306 nm with improved stability (zeta potential - 54.7 to - 39.4 mV). The copper and silver nanoparticle composites evaluated against Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae and Rhizoctonia solani were found to have higher antibacterial (inhibition zone 13 mm) and antifungal activities (77%) compared to only the copper nanoparticle (8 mm; 62% respectively). Net house trials of nano-composite formulations against the bacterial blight of rice also corroborated the potential of nanocomposite formulation. In silico studies were carried out selecting two disease-causing proteins, peptide deformylase (Xanthomonas oryzae) and pectate lyase (Rhizoctonia solani) to perform the molecular docking. Interaction studies indicatedthat both of these proteins generated better complex with CuNPs than AgNPs. The study suggested that the copper and silver nano-composites could be used for developing formulations to control these devastating rice diseases.

Abstract
The selection of effective antibiotics is becoming increasingly limited due to the emergence of bacterial resistance. Designing and developing nanoscale antibacterials is a strategy for effectively addressing the antibiotic crisis. In this work, AgNPs@AMP nanoparticles were synthesized to take advantage of the synergistic antibacterial activity of the (LLRR)3 antimicrobial peptide (AMP) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Based on morphological structure characterization and biocompatibility analysis, the inhibitory properties of AgNPs@AMP on Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) were evaluated. The results demonstrated that AMP and AgNPs were physically bound to form AgNPs@AMP nanoparticles, which had better solution stability, improved nanomaterial properties, and overcame the hemolytic activity of AMP and the cytotoxicity of AgNPs. The inhibitory activity of AgNPs@AMP against E. coli and S. aureus was significantly higher than that of AMP and AgNPs. It was capable of disrupting the morphology and internal structure of cells, damaging the cell membrane, and inhibiting the activity of enzymes related to the material-energy metabolism of the tricarboxylic acid cycle. Compared to AMP and AgNPs, AgNPs@AMP were found to effectively inhibit the infection of mouse wounds and promote their healing. Therefore, AMP-modified AgNPs can enhance their biocompatibility and antibacterial activity, and they can be further developed as a potential antimicrobial agent.

Abstract
The misuse of antibiotics and antimycotics accelerates the emergence of antimicrobial resistance, prompting the need for novel strategies to combat this global issue. Metallic nanoparticles have emerged as effective tools for combating various resistant microbes. Numerous studies have highlighted their potential in addressing antibiotic-resistant fungi and bacterial strains. Understanding the mechanisms of action of these nanoparticles, including iron-oxide, gold, zinc oxide, and silver is a central focus of research within the life science community. Various hypotheses have been proposed regarding how nanoparticles exert their effects. Some suggest direct targeting of microbial cell membranes, while others emphasize the release of ions from nanoparticles. The most compelling proposed antimicrobial mechanism of nanoparticles involves oxidative damage caused by nanoparticles-generated reactive oxygen species. This review aims to consolidate knowledge, discuss the properties and mechanisms of action of metallic nanoparticles, and underscore their potential as alternatives to enhance the efficacy of existing medications against infections caused by antimicrobial-resistant pathogens.

Abstract
Globally, food safety and security are receiving a lot of attention to ensure a steady supply of nutrient-rich and safe food. Nanotechnology is used in a wide range of technical processes, including the development of new materials and the enhancement of food safety and security. Nanomaterials are used to improve the protective effects of food and help detect microbial contamination, hazardous chemicals, and pesticides. Nanosensors are used to detect pathogens and allergens in food. Food processing is enhanced further by nanocapsulation, which allows for the delivery of bioactive compounds, increases food bioavailability, and extends food shelf life. Various forms of nanomaterials have been developed to improve food safety and enhance agricultural productivity, including nanometals, nanorods, nanofilms, nanotubes, nanofibers, nanolayers, and nanosheets. Such materials are used for developing nanofertilizers, nanopesticides, and nanomaterials to induce plant growth, genome modification, and transgene expression in plants. Nanomaterials have antimicrobial properties, promote plants' innate immunity, and act as delivery agents for active ingredients. Nanocomposites offer good acid-resistance capabilities, effective recyclability, significant thermostability, and enhanced storage stability. Nanomaterials have been extensively used for the targeted delivery and release of genes and proteins into plant cells. Impact of Copper Nanoparticles and Copper Ions on Transcripts Involved in Neural Repair Mechanisms in Rainbow Trout Olfactory Mucosa. ARCHIVES OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONTAMINATION AND TOXICOLOGY 2023; 84:18-31. Abstract
Olfactory mucosa is well known for its lifelong ability for regeneration. Regeneration of neurons and regrowth of severed axons are the most common neural repair mechanisms in olfactory mucosa. Nonetheless, exposure to neurotoxic contaminants, such as copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) and copper ions (Cu2+), may alter the reparative capacity of olfactory mucosa. Here, using RNA-sequencing, we investigated the molecular basis of neural repair mechanisms that were affected by CuNPs and Cu2+ in rainbow trout olfactory mucosa. The transcript profile of olfactory mucosa suggested that regeneration of neurons was inhibited by CuNPs. Exposure to CuNPs reduced the transcript abundances of pro-inflammatory proteins which are required to initiate neuroregeneration. Moreover, the transcript of genes encoding regeneration promoters, including canonical Wnt/β-catenin signaling proteins and developmental transcription factors, were downregulated in the CuNP-treated fish. The mRNA levels of genes regulating axonal regrowth, including the growth-promoting signals secreted from olfactory ensheathing cells, were mainly increased in the CuNP treatment. However, the reduced transcript abundances of a few cell adhesion molecules and neural polarity genes may restrict axonogenesis in the CuNP-exposed olfactory mucosa. In the Cu2+-treated olfactory mucosa, both neural repair strategies were initiated at the transcript level. The stimulation of repair mechanisms can lead to the recovery of Cu2+-induced olfactory dysfunction. These results indicated CuNPs and Cu2+ differentially affected the neural repair mechanism in olfactory mucosa. Exposure to CuNP had greater effects on the expression of genes involved in olfactory repair mechanisms relative to Cu2+ and dysregulated the transcripts associated with stem cell proliferation and neural reconstitution.

Abstract
In order to achieve the food demand of a growing population, agricultural productivity needs to be increased by employing safe strategies. In the present study we have evaluated ZnONPs that were synthesized from the culture supernatant of Bacillus subtilis. Bio mimetically synthesized ZnONPs showed a surface resonance peak of 355 nm corresponding to NPs formation. Further, NPs were examined for their size, shape and element confirmation by DLS, AFM, SEM, TEM and EDAX, which confirmed the synthesized NPs were nearly spherical in size with average diameter of 32 nm by TEM. Surface charge of + 34.3 mV was observed for NPs with a low poly-dispersity index of 0.21. In vitro efficacy studies against fungi Colletotrichum capsici, Sclerotium rolfsii, Alternaria solani and Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cicero showed up to 99% mycelial growth inhibition at 0.125% ZnONPs. Further, in-vitro disk-diffusion assay showed inhibition zones of 23 ± 0.4 mm and 12.67 ± 0.24 mm for Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. punicae (Xap) and Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) bacterial cultures. Plant toxicity study was observed that ≤ 0.14% NPs concentration was safe under greenhouse conditions. Overall, the present study emphasizes the potential effect of ZnONPs against agricultural pathogens which play an important role in agriculture production.

Abstract
Fusarium graminearum (F. graminearum), a pathogen for Fusarium head blight (FHB) on wheat, significantly reduces wheat yield and poses potential threats to human food safety. In this study, graphene oxide (GO) modified chitosan (GO-CS composite) was synthesized and its antifungal activity against F. graminearum in vitro and in vivo was evaluated. The 1HNMR and FTIR results revealed the reaction between the carboxyl groups in GO and the amino groups in chitosan (CS). In vitro, the combination of GO and CS resulted in a significant synergistic inhibitory effect on the mycelial growth of F. graminearum relative to single GO or CS. The EC50 value of the GO-CS composite was 14.07 μg/mL, which was much lower than that of GO or CS alone. In vivo, the GO-CS composite significantly reduced the disease incidence and severity compared with single GO or CS, and the control efficacy could reach 60.01 %. Microbial cells might be ultimately damaged when interacting with GO-CS due to various mechanisms such as biological effects and physical barriers. Overall, the combination of GO and CS provides new opportunities for their application in the control of fungi.

Abstract
Chitosan biomaterials are widely used in the biological area because of their broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. However, chitosan cannot be dissolved in a neutral solution, limiting its application in various fields seriously. In this study, water-soluble sulfonated oxidized chitosan (SOCS) with antifungal activity were prepared by oxidization and sulfonation. Its structure was clearly confirmed by spectroscopy data (FTIR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR) and elemental analysis. SEM images of OCS and SOCS revealed that there was a little curly and an irregular sheet-like morphologies on them which was attributed to the oxidation and sulfonation on CS. Moreover, the FTIR and NMR indicated that -OH on the CS was oxidized into -COOH on the OCS and -SO3H groups on the SOCS. The EDS results of OCS and SOCS confirmed the presence of the oxygen element in OCS and the S element in SOCS. All studies confirmed the OCS and SOCS were synthesized successfully. Furthermore, the inhibitory activity of SOCS biocomposites against plant pathogenic fungi, (Fusarium graminearum), was investigated. The results showed that the SOCS have significant inhibitory effects on the mycelial growth of F. graminearum. The EC50 value of SOCS against F. graminearum is 79.46 μg/mL. The research results presented above indicated that SOCS can be used as a candidate material for the control of plant pathogenic fungi, and can broaden the application of chitosan materials in plant protection and sustainable agriculture.Research highlightsSOCS showed better solubility in deionized water. The antifungal effect of SOCS dissolved in acetic acid was higher than that of CS dissolved in acetic acid.SOCS dissolved in water can cause an inhibitory effect on F. graminearum at lower concentrations.

Abstract
Bacterial wilt is one of the main diseases of Solanum spp., which caused by Ralstonia solanacearum (RS), formerly known as Pseudomonas solanacearum. Different concentrations of chitosan nanoparticles have been evaluated as one of the alternative methods of disease management in vitro and in vivo to reduce the risks of pesticide residues. Results in vitro experiment indicated that RS5 isolate was the most virulence one compared to RS1 and RS3. Increasing concentration of nano-chitosan, lead to increase inhibition zone, and this was observed at higher concentrations (100 and 200 µg/ml). In vivo results showed the highest concentration of spraying chitosan nanoparticles increase percentage reduction of disease incidence and severity, in effected potato and tomato plants. Recorded data of disease incidence and severity in treated potato plants were 78.93% and 71.85%, while on tomato plants were 81.64% and 77.63%, respectively compared to untreated infected potato plants were recorded 15.38%, 20.87%, and tomato plants were 20.98% and 28.64%. Results also revealed that 100 µg/ml of chitosan nanoparticles the lowest treatments used as soil amended curative treatments led to incease percentage reduction of disease incidence and severity, respectively on potato and tomato plants, but less than preventive treatment. The results registered that on potato plant were 54.93% and 52.65%, whilst recorded on tomato plants were 59.93% and 56.74%. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) micrpgraphs illustrated that morphological of healthy R. solanacearum cells were undesirably stained with uranyl. The electron-dense uranyl acetate dye was limited to the cell surface slightly than the cytoplasm, which designated the integrity of the cell film of healthy cells. While bacterial cells treated with nano-chitosan, showed modification in the external shape, such as lysis of the cell wall and loss of cell flagella. Also, the result of using Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD)-PCR observed that differences in treated Ralstonia solanancearum genotype by nano-chitosan compared to the genotype of the same untreated isolate.

Abstract
Plant diseases caused by pathogenic entities pose severe issues to global food security. Effective sensory applications and tools for the effective determination of plant diseases become crucial to the assurance of food supply and agricultural sustainability. Antibody-mediated molecular assays and nucleic acid are gold-standard approaches for plant disease diagnosis, but the evaluating methodologies are liable, complex, and laborious. With the rise in global food demand, escalating the food production in threats of diverse pathogen ranges, and climate change is a major challenge. Engineered nanoparticles (NPs) have been inserted into conventional laboratory sequence technologies or molecular assays that provide a remarkable increment in selectivity and sensitivity. In the present scenario, they are useful in plant disease management as well as in plant health monitoring. The use of NPs could sustainably mitigate numerous food security issues and or threats in disease management by decreasing the risk of chemical inputs and alleviating supra detection of pathogens. Overall, this review paper discusses the role of NPs in plant diseases management, available commercial products. Additionally, the future directions and their regulatory laws in the usage of the nano-diagnostic approach for plant health monitoring have been explained.

Abstract
Biopolymers such as chitosan and gum acacia are used for nanotechnological applications due to their biosafety and ecofriendly nature. The commercial fungicide mancozeb (M) was loaded into chitosan–gum acacia (CSGA) polymers to form nanocomposite (NC) CSGA-M (mancozeb-loaded) measuring 363.6 nm via the ionic gelation and polyelectrolyte complexation method. The physico-chemical study of nano CSGA-M was accomplished using dynamic light scattering (DLS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Nano CSGA-M-1.0 (containing 1.0 mg/mL mancozeb) at 1.5 ppm demonstrated a maximum inhibition (83.8 ± 0.7%) against Alternaria solani, while Sclerotinia sclerotiorum exhibited a 100% inhibition at 1.0 and 1.5 ppm through the mycelium inhibition method. Commercial mancozeb showed an inhibition of 84.6 ± 0% and 100%, respectively, for both fungi. In pot house conditions, NCs were found to exhibit good antimicrobial activity. Disease control efficiency (DCE, in %) in pathogen-treated plants for CSGA-M-1.0 was 64.6 ± 5.0 and 60.2 ± 1.4% against early blight and stem rot diseases, respectively. NCs showed lower cytotoxicity than commercial mancozeb at the given concentration. In conclusion, both in vitro and in vivo antifungal efficacy for nano CSGA-M was found to be quite comparable but less toxic than mancozeb to Vero cell lines; thus, in the future, this formulation may be used for sustainable agriculture.

Abstract
Chronic non-healing diabetic wounds and ulcers can be fatal, lead to amputations, and remain a major challenge to medical, and health care sectors. Susceptibility to infection and impaired angiogenesis are two central reasons for the clinical consequences associated with chronic non-healing diabetic wounds. Herein, we successfully developed calcium ion (Ca2+) cross-linked sodium alginate (SA) hydrogels with both pro-angiogenesis and antibacterial properties. Our results demonstrated that deferoxamine (DFO) and copper nanoparticles (Cu-NPs) worked synergistically to enhance the proliferation, migration, and angiogenesis of human umbilical venous endothelial cells in vitro. Results of colony formation assay indicated Cu-NPs were effective against E. coli and S. aureus in a dose-dependent manner in vitro. An SA hydrogel containing both DFO and Cu-NPs (SA-DFO/Cu) was prepared using a Ca2+ cross-linking method. Cytotoxicity assay and colony formation assay indicated that the hydrogel exhibited beneficial biocompatible and antibacterial properties in vitro. Furthermore, SA-DFO/Cu significantly accelerated diabetic wound healing, improved angiogenesis and reduced long-lasting inflammation in a mouse model of diabetic wound. Mechanistically, DFO and Cu-NPs synergistically stimulated the levels of hypoxia-inducible factor 1α and vascular endothelial growth factor in vivo. Given the pro-angiogenesis, antibacterial and healing properties, the hydrogel possesses high potential for clinical application in refractory wounds.

Abstract
Chitosan is a natural fiber, chemically cellulose-like biopolymer, which is processed from chitin. Its use as a natural polymer is getting more attention because it is non-toxic, renewable, and biocompatible. However, its poor mechanical and thermal strength, particle size, and surface area restrict its industrial use. Consequently, to improve these properties, cellulose and/or inorganic nanoparticles have been used. This review discusses the recent progress of chitosan and cellulose composite materials, their preparation, and their applications in different industrial sectors. It also discusses the modification of chitosan and cellulose composite materials to allow their use on a large scale. Finally, the recent development of chitosan composite materials for drug delivery, food packaging, protective coatings, and wastewater treatment are discussed. The challenges and perspectives for future research are also considered. This review suggests that chitosan and cellulose nano-composite are promising, low-cost products for environmental remediation involving a simple production process.

Abstract
The loss of fresh produces owing to the microbial infestation is a major challenge to the global food industry. The drastic food loss caused mainly by the fungal attack demands the need for development of active packaging materials with antimicrobial properties. Many studies have already been reported on the applications of polymers like polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) engineered with antimicrobial components as active antifungal packaging materials. In the current study, material properties of PVA alone, PVA incorporated with chitosan nanoparticles (PCS), clove oil (PCO), and their combination (PCSCO) have been studied for its microbial barrier and antifungal properties. All the developed films were characterised by the XRD and FTIR analysis, which confirmed the molecular interactions among the individual components of the nanocomposite. At the same time, the bionanocomposite PCSCO was found to have low moisture content and film solubility indicating its suitability for the modified atmosphere packaging applications. In addition, the presence of chitosan nanoparticles and clove oil was found to provide the microbial barrier properties to the PCS, PCO, and PCSCO films. The PCSCO film was further demonstrated to have superior antifungal activity against the selected Pythium aphanidermatum. The results of the study indicate the potential application of developed nanocomposite film as a promising antifungal packaging material.

Abstract
The potential of green nanomaterials for environmental and agricultural fields is emerging due to their biocompatible, eco-friendly, and cost-effective performance. We report the use of Canna indica flowers extract as new capping and stabilizing source to bio-fabricate ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs for dyes removal, seed germination. ZnO NPs was biosynthesized by ultrasound-assisted alkaline-free route to reach the critical green strategy. The physicochemical findings of ZnO revealed small crystallite size (27.82 nm), sufficient band-gap energy (3.08 eV), and diverse functional groups. Minimum‑run resolution IV approach found the most pivotal factors influencing on removal of Coomassie Brilliant Blue G-250. Uptake studies pointed out that pseudo second-order, and Langmuir were the best fitted models. Dye molecules behaved monolayer adsorption on ZnO surface layers, and controlled by chemisorption. Natural solar light was used as effective source for photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (94.23% of removal and 31.09 mg/g of uptake capacity). Compared with H2O and ZnSO4, ZnO NPs positively affected the growth of shoot and root lengths (10.2-27.8%) of bean seedlings in most cases. ZnO acts an agrochemical for boosting weight gain, and germination ratio. This study may be promising for developing the recyclable, multifunctional ZnO nanoparticles for environmental and agricultural applications.

Abstract
There are sharply rising demands for pharmaceutical proteins, however shortcomings associated with traditional protein production methods are obvious. Genetic engineering of plant cells has gained importance as a new strategy for protein production. But most current genetic manipulation techniques for plant components, such as gene gun bombardment and Agrobacterium mediated transformation are associated with irreversible tissue damage, species-range limitation, high risk of integrating foreign DNAs into the host genome, and complicated handling procedures. Thus, there is urgent expectation for innovative gene delivery strategies with higher efficiency, fewer side effect, and more practice convenience. Materials based nanovectors have established themselves as novel vehicles for gene delivery to plant cells due to their large specific surface areas, adjustable particle sizes, cationic surface potentials, and modifiability. In this review, multiple techniques employed for plant cell-based genetic engineering and the applications of nanovectors are reviewed. Moreover, different strategies associated with the fusion of nanotechnology and physical techniques are outlined, which immensely augment delivery efficiency and protein yields. Finally, approaches that may overcome the associated challenges of these strategies to optimize plant bioreactors for protein production are discussed.

Abstract
Agrochemicals have supported the development of the agricultural economy and national population over the past century. However, excessive applications of agrochemicals pose threats to the environment and human health. In the last decades, nanoparticles (NPs) have been a hot topic in many fields, especially in agriculture, because of their physicochemical properties. Nevertheless, the prevalent methods for fabricating NPs are uneconomical and involve toxic reagents, hindering their extensive applications in the agricultural sector. In contrast, inspired by biological exemplifications from microbes and plants, their extract and biomass can act as a reducing and capping agent to form NPs without any toxic reagents. NPs synthesized through these bioinspired routes are cost-effective, ecofriendly, and high performing. With the development of nanotechnology, biosynthetic NPs (bioNPs) have been proven to be a substitute strategy for agrochemicals and traditional NPs in heavy-metal remediation of soil, promotion of plant growth, and management of plant disease with less toxicity and higher performance. Therefore, bioinspired synthesis of NPs will be an inevitable trend for sustainable development in agricultural fields. This critical review will demonstrate the bioinspired synthesis of NPs and discuss the influence of bioNPs on agricultural soil, crop growth, and crop diseases compared to chemical NPs or agrochemicals.

Abstract
Chitosan nanoparticles (CSNPs) have attracted wide interest; however, there has been no substantial information about a direct comparison of the antimicrobial activity of CSNPs on bacteria and fungi. Thus, in this study, simple, economically feasible CSNPs were synthesized and assessed for their antimicrobial activity. This investigation indicated that the coordination inducing effect of CSNPs could dissociate the tryptophan (Trp) and tyrosine (Tyr) residue groups on the peptide chain of the bovine serum albumin (BSA) molecule, thereby increasing the absorption intensity. The growth of E. coli and S. aureus could be completely inhibited when the concentration of CSNPs in the solution was higher than 0.6 mg/mL. The CSNPs showed more potent antibacterial activity against Gram-negative bacteria (E. coli) than against Gram-positive bacteria (S. aureus). In addition, the CSNPs were effective at initiating cellular leakage of fungal mycelia and damping off fungal pathogens, and their antifungal effects were stronger on P. steckii than on A. oryzae. Furthermore, the antimicrobial activity of the CSNPs was found to be more effective against bacteria than against fungi. This study thus ascertained the antimicrobial activity of synthesized CSNPs against different microorganisms, as well as their different degrees of inhibition.

Abstract
Chitin and chitosan are natural compounds that are biodegradable and nontoxic and have gained noticeable attention due to their effective contribution to increased yield and agro-environmental sustainability. Several effects have been reported for chitosan application in plants. Particularly, it can be used in plant defense systems against biological and environmental stress conditions and as a plant growth promoter—it can increase stomatal conductance and reduce transpiration or be applied as a coating material in seeds. Moreover, it can be effective in promoting chitinolytic microorganisms and prolonging storage life through post-harvest treatments, or benefit nutrient delivery to plants since it may prevent leaching and improve slow release of nutrients in fertilizers. Finally, it can remediate polluted soils through the removal of cationic and anionic heavy metals and the improvement of soil properties. On the other hand, chitin also has many beneficial effects such as plant growth promotion, improved plant nutrition and ability to modulate and improve plants’ resistance to abiotic and biotic stressors. The present review presents a literature overview regarding the effects of chitin, chitosan and derivatives on horticultural crops, highlighting their important role in modern sustainable crop production; the main limitations as well as the future prospects of applications of this particular biostimulant category are also presented.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Traditionally, nanoparticles for biomedical applications have been produced via the classical wet chemistry method, with size control remaining a major problem in drug delivery. In recent years, advances in aerosol-based technologies have led to the development of methods that enable the production of nanosized particles and have opened up new opportunities in the field of nano-drug delivery and biomedicine. Aerosol-based technologies have been constantly used to synthesize multifunctional nanoparticles with different properties, which extends their possible biological and medicinal applications. Moreover, aerosol technologies are often more beneficial than other existing approaches because of the major disadvantages of these other techniques. AREA COVERED This review provides a brief discussion of the existing aerosol-based nanotechnologies and applications of nanoparticles in a variety of diseases. Various types of nanoparticles, such as graphene oxide, Prussian blue, black phosphorous, gold, copper, silver, tellurium, iron oxide, titania, magnesium oxide, and zinc oxide nanoparticles, prepared using aerosol technologies are discussed in this review. The different tactics used for surface modifications are also outlined. The biomedical applications of nanoparticles in chemotherapy, bacterial/fungal/viral treatment, disease diagnosis, and biological assays are also presented in this review. EXPERT OPINION Aerosol-based technologies can be used to design nanoparticles with the desired functionality. This significantly benefits the nanomedicine field, particularly as product parameters are becoming more encompassing and exacting. One of the biggest issues with conventional methods is their scale-up/scale-down and clinical translation. Aerosol-based nanoparticle synthesis helps enhance control over the product properties and facilitate their use for clinical applications.

Abstract
Nanotechnology is an emerging science with a wide array of applications involving the synthesis and manipulation of materials with dimensions in the range of 1-100 nm. Nanotechnological applications include diverse fields such as pharmaceuticals, medicine, the environment, food processing and agriculture. Regarding the latter, applications are mainly focused on plant growth and crop protection against plagues and diseases. In recent years, the biogenic reduction of elements such as Ag, Au, Cu, Cd, Al, Se, Zn, Ce, Ti and Fe with plant extracts has become one of the most accepted techniques for obtaining nanoparticles (NPs), as it is considered an ecological and cost-effective process without the use of chemical contaminants. The objective of this work was to review NPs synthesized by green chemistry using vegetable extracts, as well as their use as antimicrobial agents against phytopathogenic fungi and bacteria. Given the need for alternatives to control and integrate management of phytopathogens, this review is relevant to agriculture, although this technology is barely exploited in this field. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

The present study demonstrated that chitin-based nanofibers (CNFs) trigger the chitinase genes (PGIP1 and CaChi2), while elevating salicylic acid that can protect plants against pathogens. Cross-talk between this genetic induction and salicylic-acid-mediated immune response was also observed, which may arm a plant against multiple pathovars. Crab and mushroom based CNFs were synthesized by electrospinning and ball milling techniques. Plants (mung bean, Vigna radiata) (pepper, Capsicum annuum) were pre-inoculated with CNFs and treated with the pathogens Scrolotium rolfsii for pepper and Macrophomina phaseolina for mung bean and shrimp-based CNFs were used as a control. Treated plants had elevated levels of chitinase genes in response to CNFs at inoculation concentrations <10 mg/mL both in soil and media, to protect them against the pathogenic fungal disease. After 24 h of exposure to the pathogens, qRT-PCR showed genes class II chitinase gene (CaChi2) and polygalacturonase inhibitor protein 1 (PGIP1) to be up-regulated in both root and shoot at 0.1 and 1 mg/mL of inoculation, respectively. The ball milled mushroom CNFs were sufficient to trigger the membrane based enzymes with less diameter (≥15 nm) to be most efficient versus others. In vitro analysis showed IC50 of ball milled mushroom CNFs to be most efficient in limiting the growth of fungal biomass. Further trigger-like effects were prominent in reducing pathogenic fungal spread in both species.

Abstract
Abstract
The review highlights the need of non-antibacterial, non-antifungal and non-anticancer characters of metal or metal oxide nanoparticles. The usage of nanoparticles as a part of therapeutic measures results in certain unfavourable effects. The nanoparticles can disturb healthy gut microorganisms that may bring about some health damages regarding pathogenic diseases, obesity, and inflammation likewise. Even the nonspecific interactions of nanoparticles with healthy cells and tissues can cause altered expressions of various pro-inflammatory factors and stress related genes. This review indicates and prospect about the demand of nanoparticles with non-antibacterial, non-antifungal and non-anticancer properties. Such nanoparticles will be effective in various remedial and diagnostic purposes.

Green synthesis and characterization of zirconium oxide nanoparticles by using a native Enterobacter sp. and its antifungal activity against bayberry twig blight disease pathogen Pestalotiopsis versicolor. NANOIMPACT 2021; 21:100281. Abstract
Pestalotiopsis versicolor is a most destructive fungal pathogen that causes twig blight disease in bayberry. For the last seven years, it is difficult to control this pathogen due to its latent infestation mode and its control through chemical fungicides is environmentally corrosive in addition to being costly. In this study, we reported the fungicidal potential of biologically synthesized zirconium oxide nanoparticles (ZrONPs) against P. versicolor for the first time. The strain used for green synthesis of ZrONPs was taxonomically identified as Enterobacter sp. strain RNT10. The production of ZrONPs in reaction mixture was confirmed through UV-vis spectroscopy analysis. Moreover, FTIR, XRD, SEM and TEM analysis showed the presence of capping proteins and crystalline nature of spherical shaped ZrONPs with particle size ranging from 33 to 75 nm. EDX spectra revealed an elemental profile of ZrONPs comprising of Zr (54.40%) and oxygen (43.49%). Biogenic ZrONPs showed substantial antifungal inhibition zones (25.18 ± 1.52 mm) at 20 μg mL-1 concentration against P. versicolor strain XJ27. Moreover, the treatment of 20 μg mL-1 ZrONPs significantly inhibited twig blight in detached leaf assay. Furthermore, imaging through SEM and TEM showed the adverse effects of ZrONPs against P. versicolor in terms of extracellular leakage of DNA and proteins. Overall, this study suggested that biogenic ZrONPs could substitute chemically synthesized antifungal agents with the specific application towards control of twig blight disease in bayberry.

Surface carboxylation or PEGylation decreases CuO nanoparticles' cytotoxicity to human cells in vitro without compromising their antibacterial properties. Arch Toxicol 2020; 94:1561-1573. [PMID: 32253467 PMCID: PMC7261733 DOI: 10.1007/s00204-020-02720-7] [Citation(s) in RCA: 10] [Impact Index Per Article: 2.5] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 01/31/2020] [Accepted: 03/26/2020] [Indexed: 11/28/2022]
Abstract
Clinical use of CuO nanoparticles (NPs) as antibacterials can be hampered by their toxicity to human cells. We hypothesized that certain surface functionalizations of CuO NPs may render NPs toxic to bacteria, but still be relatively harmless to human cells. To control this hypothesis, the toxicity of differently functionalized CuO NPs to bacteria Escherichia coli vs human cells (THP-1 macrophages and HACAT keratinocytes) was compared using similar conditions and end points. CuO NPs functionalized with polyethylene glycol (CuO-PEG), carboxyl (CuO-COOH, anionic), ammonium (CuO-NH4+, cationic) and unfunctionalized CuO NPs and CuSO4 (controls) were tested. In general, the toxicity of Cu compounds decreased in the following order: CuO-NH4+ > unfunctionalized CuO > CuSO4 > CuO-COOH > CuO-PEG. Positively charged unfunctionalized CuO and especially CuO-NH4+ proved most toxic (24-h EC50 = 21.7-47 mg/l) and had comparable toxicity to bacterial and mammalian cells. The multivariate analysis revealed that toxicity of these NPs was mostly attributed to their positive zeta potential, small hydrodynamic size, high Cu dissolution, and induction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and TNF-α. In contrast, CuO-COOH and CuO-PEG NPs had lower toxicity to human cells compared to bacteria despite efficient uptake of these NPs by human cells. In addition, these NPs did not induce TNF-α and ROS. Thus, by varying the NP functionalization and Cu form (soluble salt vs NPs), it was possible to "target" the toxicity of Cu compounds, whereas carboxylation and PEGylation rendered CuO NPs that were more toxic to bacteria than to human cells envisaging their use in medical antibacterial products.
