Abstract
Potato oxidized hydroxypropyl starch (POHS)/pectin (P) functional and smart beef freshness indicator films were prepared using butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea) anthocyanin (BA) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). BA exhibited significant pH-responsive color changes. BA and AgNPs were evenly distributed within a polymer matrix to create a compatible film with POHS/P. The films containing BA and AgNPs had good UV resistance and maintained strong mechanical strength, barrier properties, and color stability. The color of the indicator film changed from purple to green when exposed to ammonia, with the 1 % POHS/P/BA/AgNPs film showing the most sensitive response. The films also demonstrated strong antibacterial and antioxidant properties. The freshness of beef was monitored using 1 % POHS/P/BA/AgNPs films and was identified as sub-fresh and spoiled on days 4 and 7, respectively. The relationship between the color change of the indicator label and the freshness of chilled beef was established: purple for fresh meat, blue for less fresh meat, and green for spoiled meat. Thus, the new POHS/P/BA/AgNPs film can serve as a smart packaging material to indicate food freshness and extend shelf life. These results suggest that POHS/P/BA/AgNPs films have significant potential as an active and smart food packaging material.

Abstract
Microbial growth and exposure to UV light is a persistent global concern resulting in food spoilage, therefore, smart packaging is crucial for the availability of safer and quality food. Present work describes fabrication of chitosan (CH) and gelatin (GL) based nanocomposite films by introducing green source, highly fluorescent Vachillia nilotica gum-derived carbon dots (VNG-CDs). The VNG-CDs and incorporated CH/GL nanocomposite films were characterized by UV-Visible, FTIR, XRD, SEM and TGA analysis. The FTIR and XRD data revealed that VNG-CDs, chitosan, gelatin, and glycerol are combined/interlinked to form homogeneous nanocomposite films. The inclusion of VNG-CDs to CS/GL-CDs nanocomposite film efficiently enhanced the thermal stability and improved mechanical properties. VNG-CDs added to films markedly blocked the ultraviolet light and their effectiveness improved as concentration of CDs increases, being >90 % in UVC (200-280 nm) region. The prepared CS/GL-CDs nanocomposite films manifested radical scavenging activity, reducing capability and also excellently inhibited growth of E. coli, K. pneumonia and S. aureus bacteria. The viability of CS/GL-CDs nanocomposite films examined using banana as a model fruit extending the storage time by two weeks. In conclusion, CH/GL films containing VNG-CDs can be developed into smart packaging materials with enhanced protection and antimicrobial properties.

Abstract
The excessive use of antibiotics in clinical settings has resulted in the rapid expansion, evolution, and development of bacterial and microorganism resistance. It causes a significant challenge to the medical community. Therefore, it is important to develop new antibacterial materials that could replace traditional antibiotics. With the advancements in nanotechnology, it has become evident that metallic and metal oxide nanoparticles (MeO NPs) exhibit stronger antibacterial properties than their bulk and micron-sized counterparts. The antibacterial properties of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) and copper nanoparticles (Cu NPs) have been extensively studied, including the release of metal ions, oxidative stress responses, damages to cell integrity, and immunostimulatory effects. However, it is crucial to consider the potential cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of Ag NPs and Cu NPs. Numerous experimental studies have demonstrated that bimetallic nanoparticles (BNPs) composed of Ag NPs and Cu NPs exhibit strong antibacterial effects while maintaining low cytotoxicity. Bimetallic nanoparticles offer an effective means to mitigate the genotoxicity associated with individual nanoparticles while considerably enhancing their antibacterial efficacy. In this paper, we presented on various synthesis methods for Ag-Cu NPs, emphasizing their synergistic effects, processes of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, photocatalytic properties, antibacterial mechanisms, and the factors influencing their performance. These materials have the potential to enhance efficacy, reduce toxicity, and find broader applications in combating antibiotic resistance while promoting public health.

Abstract
The consecutive viral infectious outbreaks impose severe complications on public health besides the economic burden which led to great interest in antiviral personal protective equipment (PPE). Nanofiber-based respiratory mask has been introduced as a significant barrier to eliminate the airborne transmission from aerosols toward reduction the viral infection spreading. Herein, selenium nanoparticles incorporated in polyamide 6 nanofibers coated on spunbond nonwoven were synthesized via electrospinning technique (PA6@SeNPs), with an average diameter of 180 ± 2 nm. The nanofiber-coated media were tested for 0.3 μm particulate filtration efficiency based on Standard NIOSH (42 CFR 84). PA6@SeNPs had a pressure drop of 45 ± 2 Pa and particulate filtration efficiency of more than 97.33 which is comparable to the N95 respiratory mask. The bacterial killing efficiency of these nanofibers was 91.25% and 16.67% against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli), respectively. Furthermore, the virucidal antiviral test for H1N1 infected Madin-Darby Canine Kidney cells (MDCK) exhibited TCID50 of 108.13, 105.88, and 105.5 for 2, 10, and 120 min of exposure times in comparison with 108.5, 107.5, and 106.5 in PA6 nanofibers as control sample. MTT assay indicated excellent biocompatibility of electrospun PA6@SeNP nanofibers on L292 cells. These results propose the PA6@SeNP nanofibers have a high potential to be used as an efficient layer in respiratory masks for protection against respiratory pathogens.

Abstract
In the current study, apple-pectin-based novel nanofibers were fabricated by electrospinning. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and apple pectin (PEC) solution were mixed to obtain an optimized ratio for the preparation of electrospun nanofibers. The obtained nanofibers were characterized for their physiochemical, mechanical and thermal properties. The nanofibers were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Furthermore, an assay of the in vitro viability of free and encapsulated probiotics was carried out under simulated gastrointestinal conditions. The results of TGA revealed that the PVA/PEC nanofibers had good thermal stability. The probiotics encapsulated by electrospinning showed a high survival rate as compared to free cells under simulated gastrointestinal conditions. Furthermore, encapsulated probiotics and free cells showed a 3 log (cfu/mL) and 10 log (cfu/mL) reduction, respectively, from 30 to 120 min of simulated digestion. These findings indicate that the PVA/PEC-based nanofibers have good barrier properties and could potentially be used for the improved viability of probiotics under simulated gastrointestinal conditions and in the development of functional foods.

Abstract
Foodborne pathogens represent one of the most dangerous threats to public health along the food chain all over the world. Over time, many methods were studied for pathogen inhibition in food, such as the development of novel packaging materials with enhanced properties for microorganisms' growth inhibition (coatings, films) and the use of emerging technologies, like ultrasound, radio frequency or microwave. The aim of this study was to evaluate the current trends in the food industry for pathogenic microorganisms' inhibition and food preservation in two directions, namely technology used for food processing and novel packaging materials development. Five technologies were discussed in this study, namely high-voltage atmospheric cold plasma (HVACP), High-Pressure Processing (HPP), microwaves, radio frequency (RF) heating and ultrasound. These technologies proved to be efficient in the reduction of pathogenic microbial loads in different food products. Further, a series of studies were performed, related to novel packaging material development, by using a series of antimicrobial agents such as natural extracts, bacteriocins or antimicrobial nanoparticles. These materials proved to be efficient in the inhibition of a wide range of microorganisms, including Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, fungi and yeasts.

Abstract
In this study, carbon dots (CDs), cellulose nanofibers (CNF) and essential oil nanoemulsion (EON) were extracted from the aril waste of Torreya grandis following nuts production. These three nanomaterials were formulated for the preparation of a composite film to be employed for postharvest tomato storage. Visual, microscopical and physicochemical properties of the prepared nanocomposite films were analyzed at different levels of CDs and CNF for optimization purposes. The UV absorption and antioxidant capacity of gelatin film with 10 % CDs (G/10CD) were enhanced compared with gelatin (G) film, concurrent with a reduction in water barrier capacity, water contact angle (WCA) and tensile strength (TS). Compared with G/10CD film, the WCA of gelatin film after incorporation of 10 % CDs and 3 % CNF (G/10CD/3CNF) was significantly increased by 14.5°at 55 s. In contrast, TS increased by 1.26 MPa, as well as the significant enhancement in water barrier capacity. The above composite film mixed with NEO (G/10CD/3CNF/EON) exerted further antimicrobial effects against Escherichia coli. G/10CD/3CNF/EON coating effectively extended tomato shift life compared with the control group. Therefore, this new eco-friendly film presents several advantages of biodegradability, sustainability as well as multifunctional properties posing it as potential packaging material for food applications.

Abstract
Petroleum-based polymers have raised significant environmental concerns. It is critical to create compostable, good biocompatibility, and nontoxic polymers to replace petroleum-based polymers. Thus, this research was performed to extract the gelatin from fish waste cartilage and coated it over the surface of spherical shaped pre-synthesized ZnNPs along with a suitable plasticizer to produce the biodegradable film. The presence of gelatin on the surface of ZnNPs was first confirmed using UV-visible spectrophotometers, as well as the characteristic functional groups involved in the coating were investigated using Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The morphological appearance of gelatin coated ZnNPs was ranged from 41.43 to 52.31 nm, the shape was found as platonic to pentagonal shape, and the fabricated film was observed through Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The thickness, density, and tensile strength of fabricated film were found to be 0.04-0.10 mm, 0.10-0.27 g/cm3, and 31.7 kPa. These results imply that the fish waste cartilage gelatin coated ZnNPs-based nanocomposite can be used for film preparation as well as a wrapper for food and pharmaceutical packaging.

Abstract
It is a matter of common knowledge in the literature that engineered metal oxide nanoparticles have properties that are efficient for the design of innovative food/beverage packages. Although nanopackages have many benefits, there are circumstances when these materials are able to release nanoparticles into the food/beverage matrix. Once dispersed into food, engineered metal oxide nanoparticles travel through the gastrointestinal tract and subsequently enter human cells, where they display various behaviors influencing human health or wellbeing. This review article provides an insight into the antimicrobial mechanisms of metal oxide nanoparticles as essential for their benefits in food/beverage packaging and provides a discussion on the oral route of these nanoparticles from nanopackages to the human body. This contribution also highlights the potential toxicity of metal oxide nanoparticles for human health. The fact that only a small number of studies address the issue of food packaging based on engineered metal oxide nanoparticles should be particularly noted.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effect of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) on the physicochemical characteristics of the soy protein isolated/basil seed gum (SPI/BSG) film activated with propolis (PP). The obtained results of scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and tensile investigations illustrated that the addition of HNTs as nanofiller led to positive changes in the morphology, thermal stability, and mechanical characteristics of SPI/BSG films. The barrier properties of films considerably decreased with incorporation of HNTs. Furthermore, the encapsulation of PP as bioactive agent into the produced films significantly increased (P < 0.05) the antioxidant potential of the samples in DPPH radical-scavenging activity assays. The antibacterial effects of film also significantly increased (P < 0.05) after the encapsulation of PP. In conclusion, the produced films illustrated acceptable efficiency for usage in food packaging system.

Abstract
Biodegradable food packaging films (FPFs) assembled from sustainable biopolymeric materials are of increasing interest to the food industry due to pollution and health risks resulting from the use of conventional plastic packaging. However, the functional performance of these FPFs is often poorer than that of plastic films, which limits their commercial application. This problem may be partly overcome by incorporating nano-additives like zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZNPs) into the films. The incorporation of ZNPs into FPFs can improve their functional performance. The properties of these films depends on the concentration, dispersion state, and interactions of ZNPs with the biopolymeric matrix in the films. ZNPs-loaded films and coatings are highly effective at preserving a variety of fresh foods. Studies of ZNPs migration through FPFs have shown that the zinc is mainly transported in an ionic form and the amount entering foods is below safety standards. This article reviews recent developments in the design, fabrication, and application of ZNPs-loaded FPFs based on biopolymers, focusing on the impacts of ZNPs on the optical, barrier, mechanical, water sensitivity, and antimicrobial properties of the films. The potential applications of ZNPs-loaded FPFs for fresh food preservation is also discussed.

Abstract
Clinical application of antibiotic-free agents like silver nanoparticle-derived materials remains a critical challenge due to their limited long-term antibacterial activity and potential system toxicity. Herein, a highly biocompatible Ag nanocluster-reinforced hydrogel with enhanced synergistic antibacterial ability has been developed. Specifically, bioactive curcumin was incorporated into lysozyme-protected ultrasmall Ag nanoclusters (LC-AgNCs) and further integrated with sodium alginate (Sa) hydrogel (LC-AgNCs@Sa) through multiple interaction forces. Due to the synergistic antibacterial activity, LC-AgNCs could effectively kill both S. aureus and E. coli bacteria with a concentration down to 2.5 μg mL-1. In-depth mechanism investigations revealed that the bactericidal effect of LC-AgNCs lies in their bacterial membrane destruction, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, glutathione depletion and prooxidant-antioxidant system disruption ability. Curcumin can mediate the intracellular ROS balance to protect NIH 3T3 cells from oxidative stress and improve the biocompatibility of LC-AgNCs@Sa. LC-AgNCs@Sa with long-term antibacterial ability can effectively protect the wound from bacterial invasion in vivo, and significantly accelerate the wound healing process due to their distinctive functions of inhibiting inflammatory factor (TNF-α) production, promoting collagen deposit and facilitating re-epithelization. This study provides a new, versatile strategy for the design of high-performance antibacterial dressing for broad infectious disease therapy.

Abstract
In the current work, rice straw nanofibers (RSNF) with the width of elementary fibrils (~ 4-5 nm) were isolated from rice straw. The isolated nanofibers were used with zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) to prepare flexible nanopaper films. Tensile strength and electrical properties of the prepared RSNF/ZnONPs nanopaper were investigated. The addition of ZnONPs to RSNF nanopaper did not deteriorate its mechanical properties and showed a slight improvement in tensile strength and Young's modulus of about 14% and 10%, respectively, upon the addition of 5% of ZnONPs. Microscopy investigation using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed the inclusion of the ZnONPs within the RSNF. Electrical conductivity and dielectric properties as a function of frequency at different temperatures were studied. The ac-electrical conductivity increased with frequency and fitted with the power law equation. The dc- electrical conductivity of the samples verified the Arrhenius equation and the activation energies varied in the range from 0.9 to 0.42 eV. The dielectric constant decreased with increasing frequency and increased with increasing temperature, probably due to the free movement of dipole molecular chains within the RSNF nanopaper. The high values of the dielectric constant and conductivity of the prepared nanopaper films support their use in electronic components.

Abstract
Novel pectin-based films reinforced with crystalline nanocellulose (CNC) and activated with zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) were prepared by solvent-casting method. Film ingredients enhanced UV-blocking, thermal, and antibacterial properties of active films against well-known foodborne pathogens. Optimal active films exhibited higher mechanical, water vapor barrier properties compared to pristine pectin films. SEM confirmed the even distribution of CNC and ZnO NPs in pectin matrix and their interactions were proven using FTIR. Wrapping hard cheese samples artificially contaminated with Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella enterica with the ternary nanocomposite film at 7 °C for 5 days significantly reduced the total population counts by at least 1.02 log CFU/g. Zn2+ migrating to wrapped cheese samples was below the specific limit (5 mg/kg), confirming their safety for food contact. Overall, ZnO/CNC/pectin nanocomposite films represent promising candidates for active food packaging as safe, eco-friendly alternatives for synthetic packaging materials.

Abstract
This study develops bio-nano composite gelatin-based edible film (NEF) by combining nanogelatin, cellulose nanocrystal (CNC), and nanopropolis (NP) fillers to improve the resulting film characteristics. The NEF was characterized in terms of thickness, swelling, pH, water content, solubility, vapor and oxygen permeability, mechanical properties, heat resistance, morphology, transparency, and color. The results showed that the thickness and swelling increased significantly, whilst the pH did not significantly differ in each treatment. The water content and the water solubility also showed no significant changes with loadings of both fillers. At the same time, vapor and oxygen permeability decreased with addition of the fillers but were not significantly affected by the loading amounts. The heat resistance properties increased with the filler addition. Tensile strength and Young’s modulus increased for the films loaded with >3% CNC. The elongation at break showed a significant difference together with transparency and color change. The greater the CNC concentration and NP loading were, the darker the resulting transparency and the color of the NEF. Overall results show a considerable improvement in the properties of the resulting NEFs with the incorporation of CNC and NP fillers.

Abstract
Persistent petroleum based plastic polymers are posing a threat to the environment and human health. Hence, preparation of eco-friendly packaging materials from natural sources is innovative idea to replace persistent plastic films. However, biodegradable films from biomass absorb water that can promote bacterial growth and affect lifetime of film as well as the packed products. In this work, new biodegradable film with improved antimicrobial activity, physicochemical property and less water absorbing and holding property is prepared from modified blend of cassava peel starch (CPS), silica nanoparticle (SNP), glycerol plus rosemary essential oil (REO). The mixture (blend) of CPS, SNPs and glycerol in measured amount of distilled water was treated with acetic anhydride to reduce hydrophilic nature of the blend before adding REO. The content of SNPs in the biofilm was optimized by varying the concentration of SNPs (0.2–0.8%; w/w) keeping other factors constant. Based on the characterization results, the physicochemical property of the biofilms was dependent on the content of SNPs and the best result (film) has been found with 0.6% SNPs which was considered as optimum amount for further experiments. The film prepared from modified blend with 0.6% SNP had shown low water absorption, low water vapor transition rate, improved thermal stability, and less biodegradability. Based on the image from profilometer, the modified blend had shown better homogeneity with REO than unmodified blend and the film with REO had shown better antimicrobial activity as compared to the film without REO (control). The antimicrobial activity of the film with REO was also compared with reference (gentamicin) and its activity was comparable and promising. In general, the prepared film had shown improved physicochemical properties and enhanced antimicrobial activity.

Abstract
This study aimed to develop a novel antibacterial and superabsorbent dressing by introducing the Cu-doped ZnO nanoparticles into the carboxymethyl cellulose/gelatin glutaraldehyde-crosslinked composite sponge that is fabricated by lyophilization method. Undoped and Cu-doped ZnO (Zn1-xCuxO, x = 0.03 and 0.05) nanoparticles were synthesized through the stabilizing agent-used precipitation process and characterized by XRD, FESEM, FTIR, and ICP-OES techniques. The XRD evaluation determined that the concentration of copper in ZnO is limited to below 5%. Additionally, The ICP-OES analysis confirmed the effect of the doping process on the ZnO crystalline structure by releasing more zinc and copper ions from Cu-doped ZnO, which resulted to improve antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacterial strains. The effect of ZnO nanoparticles on the physical and mechanical performance of the optimized composite sponge indicated that the incorporation of 3 wt% ZnO nanoparticles produces a well-interconnected porous structure (~156 µm) with high water absorption (~3089%) and proper elongation (~49%) in a wet medium. The incorporation of Cu-doped ZnO nanoparticles enhanced antibacterial potential of the composite sponge. Meanwhile, all sponge groups are safe for viability, proliferation and adhesion of human dermal fibroblast cells. Overall, the obtained data has proved the potential of carboxymethyl cellulose/gelatin/Cu-doped ZnO dressing as a promising candidate for managing infected wounds.

Abstract
The effects of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) on the properties of rice starch−gelatin (RS−G) films were investigated. ZnONPs were synthesized by a green method utilizing Asiatic pennywort (Centella asiatica L.) extract. The ZnONPs were rod-shaped, with sizes ranging from 100−300 nm. An increase in the concentration of ZnONPs significantly (p < 0.05) increased the thickness (0.050−0.070 mm), tensile strength (3.49−4.63 MPa), water vapor permeability (5.52−7.45 × 10−11 g m/m2 s Pa), and thermal stability of the RS−G−ZnONPs nanocomposite films. On the other hand, elongation at break (92.20−37.68%) and film solubility (67.84−30.36%) were significantly lower (p < 0.05) than that of the control RS−G film (0% ZnONPs). Moreover, the addition of ZnONPs strongly affected the film appearance, color, transmission, and transparency. The ZnONPs had a profound effect on the UV-light barrier improvement of the RS−G film. The crystalline structure of the ZnONPs was observed in the fabricated nanocomposite films using X-ray diffraction analysis. Furthermore, the RS−G−ZnONPs nanocomposite films exhibited strong antimicrobial activity against all tested bacterial strains (Staphylococcus aureus TISTR 746, Bacillus cereus TISTR 687, Escherichia coli TISTR 527, Salmonella Typhimurium TISTR 1470) and antifungal activity toward Aspergillus niger. According to these findings, RS−G−ZnONPs nanocomposite film possesses a potential application as an active packaging: antimicrobial or UV protective.

Abstract
Inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) and natural antioxidant compounds are an emerging trend in the food industry. Incorporating these substances in biobased and biodegradable matrices as polysaccharides (e.g., starch, cellulose, and chitosan) and proteins has highlighted the potential in active food packaging applications due to more significant antimicrobial, antioxidant, UV blocking, oxygen scavenging, water vapor permeability effects, and low environmental impact. In recent years, the migration of metal NPs and metal oxides in food contact packaging and their toxicological potential have raised concerns about the safety of the nanomaterials. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the main biobased and biodegradable polymer nanocomposites, inorganic NPs, natural antioxidants, and their potential use in active food packaging. The intrinsic properties of NPs and natural antioxidant actives in packaging materials are evaluated to extend shelf-life, safety, and food quality. Toxicological and safety aspects of inorganic NPs are highlighted to understand the current controversy on applying some nanomaterials in food packaging. The synergism of inorganic NPs and plant-derived natural antioxidant actives (e.g., vitamins, polyphenols, and carotenoids) and essential oils (EOs) potentiated the antibacterial and antioxidant properties of biodegradable nanocomposite films. Biodegradable packaging films based on green NPs-this is biosynthesized from plant extracts-showed suitable mechanical and barrier properties and had a lower environmental impact and offered efficient food protection. Furthermore, AgNPs and TiO2 NPs released metal ions from packaging into contents insufficiently to cause harm to human cells, which could be helpful to understanding critical gaps and provide progress in the packaging field.

Abstract
Nanocomposite biopolymer materials containing colorimetric pH-responsive indicators were prepared from gelatin and chitosan nanofibers. Plant-based extracts from barberry and saffron, which both contained anthocyanins, were used as pH indicators. Incorporation of the anthocyanins into the biopolymer films increased their mechanical, water-barrier, and light-screening properties. Infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy analysis indicated that a uniform biopolymer matrix was formed, with the anthocyanins distributed evenly throughout them. The anthocyanins in the composite films changed color in response to alterations in pH or ammonia gas levels, which was used to monitor changes in the freshness of packaged fish during storage. The anthocyanins also exhibited antioxidant and antimicrobial activity, which meant that they could also be used to slow down the degradation of the fish. Thus, natural anthocyanins could be used as both freshness indicators and preservatives in biopolymer-based nanocomposite packaging materials. These novel materials may therefore be useful alternatives to synthetic plastics for some food packaging applications, thereby improving the environmental friendliness and sustainability of the food supply.

Abstract
In this work, a simple and green synthesis procedure for phytofabrication Zinc oxide-silver supported biochar nanocomposite (Ag/ZnO@BC) via Persicaria salicifolia biomass is investigated for the first time to uphold numerous green chemistry such as less hazardous chemical syntheses. XRD technique showed the crystal structure of the phytosynthesized Ag/ZnO@BC, whereas UV-visible spectroscopy, FT-IR, SEM, EDX, TEM, and XPS analyses indicated the successful biosynthesis of the nanocomposite. Testing the photocatalytic potential of this novel nanocomposite in the removal of TC under different conditions unraveled its powerful photodegradation efficiency that reached 70.3% under the optimum reaction conditions: TC concentration; 50 ppm, pH; 6, a dose of Ag/ZnO@BC; 0.01 g, temperature; 25 °C, and H2O2 concentration; 100 mM. The reusability of Ag/ZnO@BC was evident as it reached 53% after six cycles of regeneration. Ag/ZnO@BC was also shown to be a potent antimicrobial agent against Klebsiella pneumonia as well as a promising antioxidant material. Therefore, the current work presented a novel nanocomposite that could be efficiently employed in various environmental and medical applications.

Abstract
Environmental issues such as plastic packaging and high demand for fresh and safe food has increased the interest for developing smart/active food packaging films with colloidal nanoparticles (NPs). Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TNPs) are cost effective and stable metal oxide NPs which could be used as a functional nano-filler for biodegradable food packaging due to their excellent biocompatibility, photo catalyzing, and antimicrobial properties. This article has comprehensively reviewed the functional properties and advantages of TNPs-containing smart/active films. The advantage of adding TNPs for ameliorating food packaging materials such as their physical, mechanical, moisture/light barrier, optical, thermal resistance, microstructure and chemical properties as well as, antibacterial, and photocatalytic properties are discussed. Also, the practical and migration properties of administrating TNPs in food packaging material are investigated. The ethylene decomposition activity of TNPs containing active films, could be used for increasing the shelf life of fruits/vegetables after harvesting. TNPs are safe with negligible migration rates which could be used for fabrication of multifunctional smart/active packaging films due to their antimicrobial properties and ethylene gas scavenging activities.

Abstract
There is great interest in developing biodegradable biopolymer-based packaging materials whose functional performance is enhanced by incorporating active compounds into them, such as light blockers, plasticizers, crosslinkers, diffusion blockers, antimicrobials, antioxidants, and sensors. However, many of these compounds are volatile, chemically unstable, water-insoluble, matrix incompatible, or have adverse effects on film properties, which makes them difficult to directly incorporate into the packaging materials. These challenges can often be overcome by encapsulating the active compounds within food-grade nanoparticles, which are then introduced into the packaging materials. The presence of these nanoencapsulated active compounds in biopolymer-based coatings or films can greatly improve their functional performance. For example, anthocyanins can be used as light-blockers to retard oxidation reactions, or they can be used as pH/gas/temperature sensors to produce smart indicators to monitor the freshness of packaged foods. Encapsulated botanical extracts (like essential oils) can be used to increase the shelf life of foods due to their antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. The resistance of packaging materials to external factors can be improved by incorporating plasticizers (glycerol, sorbitol), crosslinkers (glutaraldehyde, tannic acid), and fillers (nanoparticles or nanofibers). Nanoenabled delivery systems can also be designed to control the release of active ingredients (such as antimicrobials or antioxidants) into the packaged food over time, which may extend their efficacy. This article reviews the different kinds of nanocarriers available for loading active compounds into these types of packaging materials and then discusses their impact on the optical, mechanical, thermal, barrier, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties of the packaging materials. Furthermore, it highlights the different kinds of bioactive compounds that can be incorporated into biopolymer-based packaging.

Abstract
Polymeric nanocomposites have received significant attention in both scientific and industrial research in recent years. The demand for new methods of food preservation to ensure high-quality, healthy foods with an extended shelf life has increased. Packaging, a crucial feature of the food industry, plays a vital role in satisfying this demand. Polymeric nanocomposites exhibit remarkably improved packaging properties, including barrier properties, oxygen impermeability, solvent resistance, moisture permeability, thermal stability, and antimicrobial characteristics. Bio-based polymers have drawn considerable interest to mitigate the influence and application of petroleum-derived polymeric materials and related environmental concerns. The integration of nanotechnology in food packaging systems has shown promise for enhancing the quality and shelf life of food. This article provides a general overview of bio-based polymeric nanocomposites comprising polymer matrices and inorganic nanoparticles, and describes their classification, fabrication, properties, and applications for active food packaging systems with future perspectives.

Abstract
Steroid-associated osteonecrosis (SAON) is a chronic disease that leads to the destruction and collapse of bone near the joint that is subjected to weight bearing, ultimately resulting in a loss of hip and knee function. Zn2+ ions, as an essential trace element, have functional roles in improving the immunophysiological cellular environment, accelerating bone regeneration, and inhibiting biofilm formation. In this study, we reconstruct SAON lesions with a three-dimensional (3D)-a printed composite made of poly (epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) and nanoparticulate Willemite (npW). Rabbit bone marrow stem cells were used to evaluate the cytocompatibility and osteogenic differentiation capability of the PCL/npW composite scaffolds. The 2-month bone regeneration was assessed by a Micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) scan and the expression of bone regeneration proteins by Western blot. Compared with the neat PCL group, PCL/npW scaffolds exhibited significantly increased cytocompatibility and osteogenic activity. This finding reveals a new concept for the design of a 3D-printed PCL/npW composite-based bone substitute for the early treatment of osteonecrosis defects.

Abstract
Sulfated polysaccharide fucoidan (FD) is widely applied in biomedical applications owing to its outstanding bioactivities. In addition to the biochemical features, the architecture of biomaterials plays a critical role in tissue repair and regeneration. Particularly, nanofibers have elicited great interest due to their extracellular matrix-like structure, high specific surface area, and favorable biological properties. Herein, chitosan-modified FD/ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene oxide (UHMWPEO) nanofibers are developed via green electrospinning and electrostatic interaction for studying their interaction with endothelial cells. The appropriate solvent is screened to dissolve FD. The electrospinnability of FD/UHMWPEO aqueous solutions is greatly dependent on the weight ratios of FD/UHMWPEO. The incorporation of UHMWPEO significantly improves the electrospinnability of solution and thermo-stability of nanofibers. Also, it is found that there is good miscibility or no phase separation in FD/UHMWPEO solutions. In vitro biological experiments show that the chitosan-modified FD/UHMWPEO nanofibers greatly facilitate the adhesion of endothelial cells and inhibit the attachment of monocytes. Thus, the designed FD-based nanofibers are promising bio-scaffolds in building tissue-engineered blood vessels.

Abstract
Food products contaminated by foodborne pathogens (bacteria, parasites, and viruses) cause foodborne diseases. Today, great efforts are being allocated to the development of novel and effective agents against food pathogenic microorganisms. These efforts even might have a possible future effect in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Nanotechnology introduces a novel food packaging technology that creates and uses nanomaterials with novel physiochemical and antimicrobial properties. It could utilize preservatives and antimicrobials to extend the food shelf life within the package. Utilizing the antimicrobial nanomaterials into food packaging compounds typically involves incorporation of antimicrobial inorganic nanoparticles such as metals [Silver (Ag), Copper (Cu), Gold (Au)], and metal oxides [Titanium dioxide (TiO2), Silicon oxide (SiO2), Zinc oxide (ZnO)]. Alternatively, intelligent food packaging has been explored for recognition of spoilage and pathogenic microorganisms. This review paper focused on antimicrobial aspects of nanopackaging and presented an overview of antibacterial properties of inorganic nanoparticles. This article also provides information on food safety during COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
Interest in the development of smart and active biodegradable packaging materials is increasing as food manufacturers try to improve the sustainability and environmental impact of their products, while still maintaining their quality and safety. Active packaging materials contain components that enhance their functionality, such as antimicrobials, antioxidants, light blockers, or oxygen barriers. Smart packaging materials contain sensing components that provide an indication of changes in food attributes, such as alterations in their quality, maturity, or safety. For instance, a smart sensor may give a measurable color change in response to a deterioration in food quality. This article reviews recent advances in the development of active and smart biodegradable packaging materials in the food industry. Moreover, studies on the application of these packaging materials to monitor the freshness and safety of food products are reviewed, including dairy, meat, fish, fruit and vegetable products. Finally, the potential challenges associated with the application of these eco-friendly packaging materials in the food industry are discussed, as well as potential future directions.
