Evaluating children's handwashing in schools: an integrative review of indicative measures and measurement tools

Children are a key target of handwashing interventions as washing hands reduces the spread of disease and reliance on antibiotics. While there is guidance for evaluating handwashing with adults in other settings, this is lacking for children in schools. An integrative review of 65 studies where handwashing was measured in schools was conducted to establish which indicative measures (what is measured to evaluate the processes and/or impacts of, handwashing) and measurement tools (data collection instruments) have been applied to evaluate handwashing in schools, and under what circumstances. Further analysis highlighted different challenges when seeking to apply such measures and tools in schools, as opposed to other settings. It was concluded that indicative measures, and measurement tools need to be appropriate to the organizational setting, the study participants, and research objectives. A summative analysis of relevant considerations is presented.

Health Education to Reduce Helminthiasis: Deficits in Diets in Children and Achievement of Students of Elementary Schools at Pontianak, West Kalimantan

Worms are still a serious problem for poor and developing countries. Children, especially school-age children, are more at risk of infection. Efforts need to be made to prevent the effects of worms. Prevention can be done through a promotive approach. This observational study with a pre-posttest and cross-sectional approach is aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of health education on healthy and helminthic behavior and analyzing the impact of helminthiasis on the deficit in the diet and children's learning achievement. The number of samples is 60 students from five grade 3 and 4 elementary schools in North Pontianak, West Kalimantan. The sampling technique was carried out by proportional random sampling. Worm infection in elementary school students was 16.7%, anemia was 55%, and learning achievement scores were less than the average grade of 55%. There was a significant difference in health counseling towards a decrease in the worm number (p = 0.046). There was a significant relationship between healthy living behavior and helminthiasis (p = 0.005). There was a significant relationship between helminthiasis and anemia (p = 0.017). There is a relationship between helminthiasis and learning achievement in elementary school children (p = 0.017). There is a relationship between anemia and learning achievement (p = 0.005). It is necessary for public health centers to provide treatment services for worms and health education about the effects of helminthiasis on health and learning achievement. The school should provide hand washing facilities in schools, and parents should play an active role in improving clean and healthy lifestyle habits at home.

The Effect of Health Education Course Review Horay Method and Video Media on Improvement of Personal Hygiene Ability in Children Age School

Introduction: Personal hygiene problems that often occur in school-age children are related to hand hygiene and dental hygiene. This study aims to explain the effect of health education methods review horay courses and videos media on improving personal hygiene abilities.Methods: Quasy-experimental pretest-posttest design with control group design. A population of 150 students in Elementary School (ES) A of Surabaya and 123 students in ES B of Surabaya. The sample size was proportional to stratified cluster random sampling. A total of 72 respondents in ES A of Surabaya and ES B of Surabaya with 36 treatment groups and 36 control groups. The instrument used a questionnaire and an observation sheet (checklist). The analysis uses the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test and the Mann-Whitney U Test.Results: Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test showed knowledge (p = 0.000), attitude (p = 0.000), hand hygiene practice (p = 0.000) and tooth brushing practice (p = 0.000). The value of p <0.05 then there was the effect of intervention courses review horay method and video to increase the ability of personal hygiene in school-age children. Mann-Whitney U Test results showed knowledge (p = 0.000), attitude (p = 0.000), hand hygiene practices (p = 0.000) and tooth brushing practice (p = 0.000). The value of p <0.05 then there was a mean difference in the level of personal hygiene ability between the treatment and control groups.Conclusion: Health education horay review course method and video media to improve the ability of personal hygiene in school-age children to increase knowledge, attitudes and actions in the form of hand hygiene and tooth brushing properly and correctly in the elementary school.

Development and Testing of the Family Structure and Family Functions Scale for Parents Providing Adolescent Reproductive Health Based on the Friedman Family Assessment Model

Background and Purpose:

To describe the development and testing of a psychometric of Family Structure and Functions (FSF) that measures parents’ ability to provide adolescent reproductive health (ARH).

Methods:

A cross-sectional study of Indonesian parents (n = 525). Multifactors FSF-ARH were examined using construct validity (exploratory factor analysis [EFA] and confirmatory factor analysis [CFA]) and content validity (Content Validity Index [CVI]). Internal consistency was explored using Cronbach’s α coefficient.

Results:

EFA revealed nine factors with 26 items accounting for 61.64% of explained variance and CFA validity testing fit for the construct validity of FSF-ARH. The CVI indicated adequate content validity (0.80–0.10) and acceptable internal consistency (0.70).

Conclusions:

FSF-ARH contains valid, reliable, and robust measures although some subscales performed moderate reliability, establishing the purpose for further research.
