Preparation and photocatalytic properties of Bi2WO6/g-C3N4

LDH/MXene Synergistic Carrier Separation Effects to Improve the Photoelectric Catalytic Activities of Bi2WO6 Nanosheet Arrays

Photoelectric catalysis is a green and efficient way to degrade pollutants, which has been paid more and more attention by researchers. Among them, Bi2WO3 has been proved to have excellent photocatalytic oxidation activity on its {001} facets. In this study, {001}-oriented facets with high exposure were successfully integrated into Bi2WO6 nanoplate arrays (Bi2WO6 NAs) to create a photoelectrode. This structure was grown in situ on an indium tin oxide (ITO) substrate. To promote photogenerated carrier separation efficiency and reduce agglomeration of Bi2WO6 photocatalysts, the electrochemical deposition of NiFe-layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) and Ti3C2 (MXene) were introduced in this research to synergistically catalyze pollutant degradation. Morphology, spectral characterization, and electrochemical analysis jointly confirmed that the outstanding performance of hole capture behavior with LDH and electron conduction properties with MXene were the main reasons for the improvement in catalytic activity of the photoelectrode. Taking bisphenol A (BPA) as the model pollutant, the rate constant k of the NiFe-LDH/Ti3C2/Bi2WO6 NAs photoelectrode reaches 0.00196 min-1 under photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) conditions, which is 4.5 times that of the pure Bi2WO6 NAs photoelectrode. This work provides a new way to improve the reaction kinetics of the PEC degradation of pollutants.

Heterogeneous photocatalytic oxidation for the removal of organophosphorus pollutants from aqueous solutions: A review

Organophosphorus pollutants (OPs), which are compounds containing carbon‑phosphorus bonds or phosphate derivatives containing organic groups, have received much attention from researchers because of their persistence in the aqueous environment for long periods of time and the threat they pose to human health. Heterogeneous photocatalysis has been widely applied to the removal of OPs from aqueous solutions due to its better removal effect and environmental friendliness. In this review, the removal of OPs from aqueous matrices by heterogeneous photocatalysis was presented. Herein, the application and the heterogeneous photocatalysis mechanism of OPs were described in detail, and the effects of catalyst types on degradation effect are discussed categorically. In particular, the heterojunction type photocatalyst has the most excellent effect. After that, the photocatalytic degradation pathways of several OPs were summarized, focusing on the organophosphorus pesticides and organophosphorus flame retardants, such as methyl parathion, dichlorvos, dimethoate and chlorpyrifos. The toxicity changes during degradation were evaluated, indicating that the photocatalytic process could effectively reduce the toxicity of OPs. Additionally, the effects of common water matrices on heterogeneous photocatalytic degradation of OPs were also presented. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of heterogeneous photocatalysis removal of OPs are summarized and presented.

Advances in Bi2WO6-Based Photocatalysts for Degradation of Organic Pollutants

With the rapid development of modern industries, water pollution has become an urgent problem that endangers the health of human and wild animals. The photocatalysis technique is considered an environmentally friendly strategy for removing organic pollutants in wastewater. As an important member of Bi-series semiconductors, Bi₂WO₆ is widely used for fabricating high-performance photocatalysts. In this review, the recent advances of Bi₂WO₆-based photocatalysts are summarized. First, the controllable synthesis, surface modification and heteroatom doping of Bi₂WO₆ are introduced. In the respect of Bi₂WO₆-based composites, existing Bi₂WO₆-containing binary composites are classified into six types, including Bi₂WO₆/carbon or MOF composite, Bi₂WO₆/g-C₃N₄ composite, Bi₂WO₆/metal oxides composite, Bi₂WO₆/metal sulfides composite, Bi₂WO₆/Bi-series composite, and Bi₂WO₆/metal tungstates composite. Bi₂WO₆-based ternary composites are classified into four types, including Bi₂WO₆/g-C₃N₄/X, Bi₂WO₆/carbon/X, Bi₂WO₆/Au or Ag-based materials/X, and Bi₂WO₆/Bi-series semiconductors/X. The design, microstructure, and photocatalytic performance of Bi₂WO₆-based binary and ternary composites are highlighted. Finally, aimed at the existing problems in Bi₂WO₆-based photocatalysts, some solutions and promising research trends are proposed that would provide theoretical and practical guidelines for developing high-performance Bi₂WO₆-based photocatalysts.

Recent Progress in Photocatalytic Removal of Environmental Pollution Hazards in Water Using Nanostructured Materials

Water pollution has become a critical issue because of the Industrial Revolution, growing populations, extended droughts, and climate change. Therefore, advanced technologies for wastewater remediation are urgently needed. Water contaminants are generally classified as microorganisms and inorganic/organic pollutants. Inorganic pollutants are toxic and some of them are carcinogenic materials, such as cadmium, arsenic, chromium, cadmium, lead, and mercury. Organic pollutants are contained in various materials, including organic dyes, pesticides, personal care products, detergents, and industrial organic wastes. Nanostructured materials could be potential candidates for photocatalytic reduction and for photodegradation of organic pollutants in wastewater since they have unique physical, chemical, and optical properties. Enhanced photocatalytic performance of nanostructured semiconductors can be achieved using numerous techniques; nanostructured semiconductors can be doped with different species, transition metals, noble metals or nonmetals, or a luminescence agent. Furthermore, another technique to enhance the photocatalytic performance of nanostructured semiconductors is doping with materials that have a narrow band gap. Nanostructure modification, surface engineering, and heterojunction/homojunction production all take significant time and effort. In this review, I report on the synthesis and characterization of nanostructured materials, and we discuss the photocatalytic performance of these nanostructured materials in reducing environmental pollutants.

Photodegradation under UV Light Irradiation of Various Types and Systems of Organic Pollutants in the Presence of a Performant BiPO4 Photocatalyst

In this study, we prepared spheroid microstructures of monoclinic bismuth phosphate BiPO4 by a facile solid-state reaction at 500 °C. The crystal structure was refined using the Rietveld method, where the crystal cell was resolved using a monoclinic system (parameters a, b, c, β) with space group P21/n. SEM images showed that the solid catalyst presented homogeneous morphologies. These BiPO4 microparticles (BiP-500) have been used as photocatalysts to photodegrade, under UV light irradiation, three cationic dyes (Rhodamine B, RhB; Methylene Blue, MB; and Toluidine Blue, TB), three anionic dyes (Congo Red, CR; Orange G, OG; and Methyl Orange, MO) and mixtures of RhB-MB, RhB-OG and MO-OG organic dyes. The photodegradation efficiency of these BiP-500 microparticles is found to be optimal in the case of RhB solutions, RhB-MB and RhB-OG binary mixtures. The BiP-500 catalyst shows a high selectivity for the conversion of the mixture of dyes into CO2 and H2O. Total organic carbon analysis of an anionic dye and a cationic dye (RhB, OG and RhB-MB) confirms the mineralization of the pollutants in the presence of BiP-500 particles. The photocatalytic efficiency of our BiP-500 photocatalyst has been confirmed, with a view to facilitate applications in the field of the depollution of wastewater in the agricultural environment by the degradation of parathion-methyl (PM) as a pollutant.

Biomass porous carbon as the active site to enhance photodegradation of oxytetracycline on mesoporous g-C3N4

A novel mesoporous g-C3N4 loaded with biomass porous carbon was synthesized by molten salt assisted thermal polycondensation, and the formation of hollow tubular structure increased the specific surface area.
