Abstract
Ion-selective separators are promising to inhibit soluble intermediates shuttle in practical lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. However, designing and fabricating such high-performance ion-selective separators using cost-effective, eco-friendly, and versatile methods remains a formidable challenge. Here we present ion-selective separators fabricated via the spontaneous deposition of green tea-derived polyphenols onto a polypropylene separator, aimed at enhancing the stability of Li-S batteries. The resulting natural polyphenol-reinforced ion-selective (NPRIS24) separators exhibit rapid Li ion transport and high soluble intermediates inhibition capability with an ultralow shuttle rate of 0.67 % for Li2S4, 0.19 % for Li2S6 and 0.10 % for Li2S8. This superior ion-selectivity arises from the high electronegativity and strong lithiophilic nature of the phenolic compounds. Consequently, we have achieved high-performance Li-S batteries that are steadily cyclable under the challenging conditions of an S loading of 5.7 mg cm-2, an electrolyte-to-S ratio of 5.1 μL mg-1, and a 50 μm Li foil anode. Furthermore, the NPRIS24 separator enhances the performance of other Li metal batteries utilizing commercial LiFePO4 (5.3 mg cm-2) and LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 (9.9 mg cm-2) cathodes. This work underscores the potential of utilizing natural polyphenols for the design of advanced ion-selective separators in energy storage systems.

Abstract
Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based composite solid electrolytes (CSEs) are promising to accelerate commercialization of solid-state lithium metal batteries (SSLMBs). Nonetheless, this is hindered by the CSEs' limited ion conductivity at room temperature. Here, we propose design, synthesis, and application of the bioinspired neuron-like nanofillers for PEO-based CSEs. The neuron-like superhydrophobic nanofillers are synthesized by controllably grafting silicone nanofilaments onto montmorillonite nanosheets. Compared to various reported fillers, the nanofillers can greatly improve ionic conductivity (4.9×10-4 S cm-1, 30 °C), Li+ transference number (0.63), oxidation stability (5.3 V) and mechanical properties of the PEO-based CSEs because of the following facts. The distinctive neuron-like structure and the resulting synaptic-like connections establish numerous long-distance continuous channels over various directions in the PEO-based CSEs for fast and uniform Li+ transport. Consequently, the assembled SSLMBs with the CSEs and LiFePO4 or NCM811 cathodes display superior cycling stability over a wide temperature range of 50 °C to 0 °C. Surprisingly, the pouch batteries with the large-scale prepared CSEs kept working after being repeatedly bent, folded, cut or even punched in air. We believe that design of neuron-like nanofillers is a viable approach to produce CSEs with high room temperature ionic conductivity for SSLMBs.

Abstract
Ammonium nitrate (AN) is a very promising high-energy oxidant for use in solid propellants but suffers from serious hygroscopicity. While various coating materials (e.g., surfactants) have been employed to mitigate the hygroscopicity of AN, the interaction mechanisms between AN and these coatings remain inadequately understood. Here, we report the preparation of a mineral oil/stearic acid (MO/SA) hybrid coating that significantly reduces the hygroscopicity of AN. The hygroscopicity of AN is efficiently inhibited through interactions between the NH4+ of AN molecules and the -COOH of SA molecules, resulting in the formation of a dense and hydrophobic coating. Additionally, the defects in the SA coating are compensated for by the MO film. Consequently, MO/SA@AN particles with a low mass ratio of the coating (1.35 wt %) exhibit a low hygroscopicity of 7.24% after being kept in a 90% relative humidity environment at 20 °C for 24 h, representing a 48.10% decline of the hygroscopicity. Furthermore, MO/SA@AN maintains a high rate of hygroscopicity decline, at 29.5%, even at 35 °C and 90% RH after 24 h. Additionally, the hybrid coating effectively accelerates the thermal decomposition reactions of AN. This study provides valuable insights into the development of hybrid coatings with excellent antihygroscopic properties for AN.

Abstract
Solar-driven interfacial evaporation (SIE) is very promising to solve the issue of fresh water shortage, however, poor salt resistance severely hinders long-term stable SIE and fresh water collection. Here, we report design of superhydrophilic solar evaporators for long-term stable desalination, fresh water collection and salt collection by vertical salt deposition. The evaporators are prepared by sequentially deposition of silicone nanofilaments, polypyrrole and Au nanoparticles on a polyester fabric composed of microfibers. The evaporators feature excellent photothermal effect and ultrafast water transport, due to their unique micro-/nanostructure and superhydrophilicity. As a result, during SIE the salt gradually deposits vertically rather than occupies larger area on the evaporators. Consequently, long-term stable SIE with high evaporation rates of 2.4-2.1 kg m-2 h-1 for 3.5-20 wt % brine in continuous 10 h is achieved under 1 sun illumination. Meanwhile, the loosely deposited salt can be easily collected, realizing zero brine discharge. Moreover, scalable preparation of the evaporator is achieved, which exhibits efficient collection of high quality fresh water (10.08 kg m-2 in 8 h) via SIE desalination under weak natural sunlight (0.46~0.66 sun). This strategy sheds a new light on the design of high-performance solar evaporators and their real-world fresh water collection.

Abstract
Superhydrophobicity (SHP) is an incredible phenomenon of extreme water repellency of surfaces ubiquitous in nature (E.g. lotus leaves, butterfly wings, taro leaves, mosquito eyes, water-strider legs, etc). Historically, surface exhibiting water contact angle (WCA) > 150° and contact angle hysteresis <10° is considered as SHP. The SHP surfaces garnered considerable attention in recent years due to their applications in anti-corrosion, anti-fouling, self-cleaning, oil-water separation, viscous drag reduction, anti-icing, etc. As corrosion and marine biofouling are global problems, there has been focused efforts in combating these issues using innovative environmentally friendly coatings designs taking cues from natural SHP surfaces. Over the last two decades, though significant progress has been made on the fabrication of various SHP surfaces, the practical adaptation of these surfaces for various applications is hampered, mainly because of the high cost, non-scalability, lack of simplicity, non-adaptability for a wide range of substrates, poor mechanical robustness and chemical inertness. Despite the extensive research, the exact mechanism of corrosion/anti-fouling of such coatings also remains elusive. The current focus of research in recent years has been on the development of facile, eco-friendly, cost-effective, mechanically robust chemically inert, and scalable methods to prepare durable SHP coating on a variety of surfaces. Although there are some general reviews on SHP surfaces, there is no comprehensive review focusing on SHP on metallic and alloy surfaces with corrosion-resistant and antifouling properties. This review is aimed at filling this gap. This review provides a pedagogical description with the necessary background, key concepts, genesis, classical models of superhydrophobicity, rational design of SHP, coatings characterization, testing approaches, mechanisms, and novel fabrication approaches currently being explored for anticorrosion and antifouling, both from a fundamental and practical perspective. The review also provides a summary of important experimental studies with key findings, and detailed descriptions of the evaluation of surface morphologies, chemical properties, mechanical, chemical, corrosion, and antifouling properties. The recent developments in the fabrication of SHP -Cr-Mo steel, Ti, and Al are presented, along with the latest understanding of the mechanism of anticorrosion and antifouling properties of the coating also discussed. In addition, different promising applications of SHP surfaces in diverse disciplines are discussed. The last part of the review highlights the challenges and future directions. The review is an ideal material for researchers practicing in the field of coatings and also serves as an excellent reference for freshers who intend to begin research on this topic.

Abstract
Superhydrophobic (SH) surfaces have progressed rapidly in fundamental research over the past 20 years, but their practical applications lag far behind. In this perspective, we first present the findings of a survey on the current state of SH surfaces including fundamental research, patenting, and commercialization. On the basis of the survey and our experience, this perspective explores the challenges and strategies for commercialization and widespread practical applications of SH surfaces. The comprehensive performances, preparation methods, and application scenarios of SH surfaces are the major constraints. These challenges should be addressed simultaneously, and the actionable strategies are provided. We then highlight the standard test methods of the comprehensive performances including mechanical stability, impalement resistance, and weather resistance. Last, the prospects of SH surfaces in the future are discussed. We anticipate that SH surfaces may be widely commercialized and used in practical applications around the year 2035 through combination of the suggested strategies and input from both academia and industry.

Abstract
Lithium (Li) metal batteries are among the most promising devices for high energy storage applications but suffer from severe and irregular Li dendrite growth. Here, it is demonstrated that the issue can be well tackled by precisely designing the leaf-like membrane with hierarchical structure and exquisite fluidic channels. As a proof of concept, plant leaf-inspired membrane (PLIM) separators are prepared using natural attapulgite nanorods. The PLIM separators feature super-electrolyte-philicity, high thermal stability and high ion-selectivity. Thus, the separators can guide uniform and directed Li growth on the Li anode. The Li//PLIM//Li cell with limited Li anode shows high Coulombic efficiency and cycling stability over 1500 h with small overpotential and interface impedance. The Li//PLIM//S battery exhibits high initial capacity (1352 mAh g-1 ), cycling stability (0.019% capacity decay per cycle at 1 C over 500 cycles), rate performance (673 mAh g-1 at 4 C), and high operating temperature (65 °C). The separators can also effectively improve reversibility and cycling stability of the Li/Li cell and Li//LFP battery with carbonate-based electrolyte. As such, this work provides fresh insights into the design of bioinspired separators for dendrite-free metal batteries.

Abstract
In the past few years, bioinspired eco-friendly superhydrophobic materials (EFSMs) have made great breakthroughs, especially in the fields of environment, energy and biology, which have made remarkable contributions to the sustainable development of the natural environment. However, some potential challenges still exist, which urgently need to be systematically summarized to guide the future development of this field. Herein, in this review, initially, we discuss the five typical superhydrophobic models, namely, the Wenzel, Cassie, Wenzel-Cassie, "lotus", and "gecko" models. Then, the existence of superhydrophobic creatures in nature and artificial EFSMs are summarized. Then, we focus on the applications of EFSMs in the fields of environment (self-cleaning, wastewater purification, and membrane distillation), energy (solar evaporation, heat accumulation, and batteries), and biology (biosensors, biomedicine, antibacterial, and food packaging). Finally, the challenges and developments of eco-friendly superhydrophobic materials are highlighted.

Abstract
Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are of great interest due to their high energy density. However, polysulfides shuttle and low S loading severely impede their practical applications. Here, we report design of advanced separators for Li-S batteries using natural minerals with 1D to 3D microstructures. Four natural minerals with different microstructures including 1D halloysite nanotubes, 1D attapulgite nanorods, 2D Li+-montmorillonite (Mmt) nanosheets and 3D porous diatomite were used together with carbon black (CB) for preparation of the mineral/CB-Celgard separators. The Si-OH groups of the minerals act as Lewis acid sites, which could effectively absorb polysulfides by forming LiO and OS bonds with polysulfides. Among all the separators, the Mmt/CB-Celgard separator endowed the Li-S battery with the highest upper plateau discharge capacity (369 mA h g-1), initial reversible capacity (1496 mA h g-1 at 0.1 C), rate performance and cycling stability (666 mA h g-1 after 500 cycles at 1.0 C with 0.046% capacity decay per cycle). The Mmt/CB-Celgard separator also enabled stable cycling of the Li-S battery with high S loading (8.3 mg cm-2) cathode. This work will provide inspiration for future development of advanced separators for high-energy-density Li-S batteries.

Abstract
Alkali metal batteries based on lithium, sodium, and potassium anodes and sulfur-based cathodes are regarded as key for next-generation energy storage due to their high theoretical energy and potential cost effectiveness. However, metal-sulfur batteries remain challenged by several factors, including polysulfides' (PSs) dissolution, sluggish sulfur redox kinetics at the cathode, and metallic dendrite growth at the anode. Functional separators and interlayers are an innovative approach to remedying these drawbacks. Here we critically review the state-of-the-art in separators/interlayers for cathode and anode protection, covering the Li-S and the emerging Na-S and K-S systems. The approaches for improving electrochemical performance may be categorized as one or a combination of the following: Immobilization of polysulfides (cathode); catalyzing sulfur redox kinetics (cathode); introduction of protective layers to serve as an artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) (anode); and combined improvement in electrolyte wetting and homogenization of ion flux (anode and cathode). It is demonstrated that while the advances in Li-S are relatively mature, less progress has been made with Na-S and K-S due to the more challenging redox chemistry at the cathode and increased electrochemical instability at the anode. Throughout these sections there is a complementary discussion of functional separators for emerging alkali metal systems based on metal-selenium and the metal-selenium sulfide. The focus then shifts to interlayers and artificial SEI/cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) layers employed to stabilize solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) in metal-sulfur solid-state batteries (SSBs). The discussion of SSEs focuses on inorganic electrolytes based on Li- and Na-based oxides and sulfides but also touches on some hybrid systems with an inorganic matrix and a minority polymer phase. The review then moves to practical considerations for functional separators, including scaleup issues and Li-S technoeconomics. The review concludes with an outlook section, where we discuss emerging mechanics, spectroscopy, and advanced electron microscopy (e.g. cryo-transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) and cryo-focused ion beam (cryo-FIB))-based approaches for analysis of functional separator structure-battery electrochemical performance interrelations. Throughout the review we identify the outstanding open scientific and technological questions while providing recommendations for future research topics.

Abstract
Self-healing superhydrophobic coatings have a wide potential for practical applications by prolonging their lifespan, but still suffer from some shortcomings, for example, difficulty in repairing microstructure damage, limited self-healing cycles, and more importantly the inability to self-heal while in service. Herein, we present the fabrication of superhydrophobic coatings having photothermal self-healing chemical composition and microstructure for the high performance anticorrosion of Mg alloy. The coatings contain a shape-memory polymer (SMP) primer and an upper superhydrophobic coating composed of fluorinated polysiloxane-modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes (PF-POS@MWCNTs). The coatings have good superhydrophobicity, photothermal effect, and anticorrosion performance. The coatings show excellent self-healing performance in response to chemical and microstructure damage, such as rapid self-healing under 1 sun irradiation in 10 min, complete self-healing after serious damage (e.g., 10 damage and self-healing cycles and complex microstructure damage), and even self-healing under natural sunlight in 4 h. Moreover, the self-healed coatings show good corrosion protection for magnesium alloy in the neutral salt spray test. These are because of the combination of the SMP primer with good shape-memory effect and the PF-POS@MWCNTs coating with good superhydrophobicity, photothermal effect, and embedded PF-POS. The coatings are self-healable under natural sunlight while in service and thus may find applications in diverse fields.

Abstract
In spite of high theoretical specific capacity and specific energy of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, the poor cycle stability caused by polysulfides shuttle severely hinders their real-world applications. Here, a natural clay mineral (illite/smectite, ISC) and carbon black (C) coated Celgard@2400 (ISC/C@Celgard) separator is reported. The separator shows super-electrolyte-philicity and good mechanical stability. The low-cost and eco-friendly ISC with abundant -OH groups can quickly trap a lot of polysulfides by Li-O and Li-S bonding with polysulfides. The ISC/C layer with uniform nanopores can also inhibit polysulfides shuttle by physical shield. Moreover, good electrical conductivity of the ISC/C layer can reactivate the adsorbed polysulfides and thus enhance S utilization. So, the separator endows the Li-S battery with very high initial reversible capacity (1322 mA h g-1) at 0.1 C and excellent cycle stability with low capacity decay rate (0.054% per cycle) during 500 cycles at 1.0 C. Furthermore, a very high areal capacity (5.9 mAh cm-2) is achieved for the battery composed of the separator and the self-supporting high S loading (8.9 mg cm-2) CNT/S cathode at 0.32 mA cm-2. This study opens the possibility of developing advanced separators using natural clay minerals for highly stable Li-S batteries.
