Abstract
CONTEXT Interest is growing in the association between repetitive concussions and mental health. However, studies on the relationship between concussion frequency and adverse mental health outcomes among female and male youth are lacking. OBJECTIVES To examine the association between self-reported concussion frequency and nonfatal suicidal behaviors among youth and to explore the possible interaction of biological sex. DESIGN Retrospective cross-sectional survey. SETTING National Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System. PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS United States secondary school students (N = 28 442). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S) Exposure variables were the frequency of self-reported sport- or recreation-related concussion in the previous 12 months (0, 1, ≥2). Outcome variables were feelings of self-reported sadness or hopelessness and suicidal ideation, planning, and attempts. Covariates were age, sex, race and ethnicity, bullying victimization, sexual orientation, and physical activity. RESULTS Students who reported ≥2 concussions were at significantly greater odds of reporting suicidal attempts (adjusted odds ratio = 2.03; 95% CI = 1.43, 2.88) when compared with students reporting a single concussive event during the past 12 months. However, sex interactions revealed that this finding may have been driven by males; the strength of associations did not increase from single to multiple concussions among females. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that adolescents who reported concussion were at increased odds of reporting poor mental health and suicidal behaviors. Moreover, an increased number of concussive events may be associated with significantly greater odds of reporting suicidal attempts, particularly among males. Irrespective of sex, health care professionals should closely monitor mental health behaviors in adolescents with repetitive concussions, especially those that occur in close temporal proximity.

Abstract
Emotional dysregulation symptoms following a concussion are associated with an increased risk for emotional dysregulation disorders (e.g., depression and anxiety), especially in adolescents. However, predicting the emergence or worsening of emotional dysregulation symptoms after concussion and the extent to which this predates the onset of subsequent psychiatric morbidity after injury remains challenging. Although advanced neuroimaging techniques, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging and diffusion magnetic resonance imaging, have been used to detect and monitor concussion-related brain abnormalities in research settings, their clinical utility remains limited. In this narrative review, we have performed a comprehensive search of the available literature regarding emotional regulation, adolescent concussion, and advanced neuroimaging techniques in electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar). We highlight clinical evidence showing the heightened susceptibility of adolescents to experiencing emotional dysregulation symptoms following a concussion. Furthermore, we describe and provide empirical support for widely used magnetic resonance imaging modalities (i.e., functional and diffusion imaging), which are utilized to detect abnormalities in circuits responsible for emotional regulation. Additionally, we assess how these abnormalities relate to the emotional dysregulation symptoms often reported by adolescents post-injury. Yet, it remains to be determined if a progression of concussion-related abnormalities exists, especially in brain regions that undergo significant developmental changes during adolescence. We conclude that neuroimaging techniques hold potential as clinically useful tools for predicting and, ultimately, monitoring the treatment response to emotional dysregulation in adolescents following a concussion.

Abstract
ABSTRACT The aim of this article is to provide an up-to-date review of psychological changes in association with postconcussive athletes. In particular, this article focused on the symptomatology, risk factors, and treatment of psychiatric diagnoses in patients who suffered a sports-related concussion (SRC). After an extensive review of prior and current literature, there is significant evidence that demonstrates an association of changes in mood and behavior, including new or worsening symptoms of anxiety, depression, and difficulty with attention and concentration in those who are recovering from a concussion. The goal of care in these patients is to identify and treat these psychological symptoms early to have more favorable long-term outcomes. Primary treatment should focus on psychotherapy; however, other considerations may be warranted in certain cases, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors for depression and tricyclic antidepressants and gabapentin for short-term cognitive symptom improvement.

Abstract
Prior studies have reported an association between concussion and suicidality in high school students in the United States. However, when controlling for multiple life stressors in adolescence (e.g., bullying, substance use, poor grades), the relationship between concussion and suicidality was either attenuated or became nonsignificant in one study. Rather than assessing concussion as a possible risk factor for suicidality, this study examined predictors of ideation, planning, and attempts among youth who experienced concussion in the past year. The sample included 13,677 participants from the 2019 Youth Behavior Risk Survey, of whom 1,754 (13%) reported experiencing a concussion in the past year. Binary logistic regressions were conducted to predict ideation, planning, and attempts with modifiable stress factors, including physical activity, bullying, poor grades, insufficient sleep, binge drinking, marijuana use, illicit drug use, and depression. Among adolescents who experienced a concussion in the past year, 25% reported suicidal ideation (31% girls/19% boys), 20% reported suicide planning (25% girls/17% boys), and 15% reported a suicide attempt (17% girls/13% boys). In a multivariable model among girls with prior year concussion, being bullied (OR=2.37), illicit drug use (OR=2.80), current marijuana use (OR=2.47), and depression (OR=9.22) predicted suicidal ideation. Among boys with prior year concussion, being bullied (OR=2.29) and depression (OR=9.50) predicted suicidal ideation. Additional models were used to examine the association between having one or more modifiable stressors and suicidality, revealing that having three or more modifiable stressors was associated with a substantial increase in proportions of youth reporting suicidality. Among adolescents experiencing a concussion, treating depression and substance use, stopping bullying, and increasing physical activity may be associated with reduced risk for suicidality.

Abstract
This study examined the association between self-reported sports- or physical activity-related concussion and symptoms of depression and suicidal behaviors (suicidal ideation, having a suicide plan, and suicide attempts). This study used data from the 2017 and 2019 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), a biennial, school-based, nationally representative survey of U.S. students in grade levels 9 to 12 (N = 14,496). Multivariate logistical regression models assessed the association between self-reported sports-or physical activity-related concussions and suicidal behaviors among students, controlling for a range of demographic and psychosocial variables. Altogether, 13.6% of students reported a sports-or physical activity related concussion in the past 12 months. Among youth, sports-or physical activity related concussions were significantly associated with greater odds of symptoms of depression, suicidal ideation, making a suicide plan, and suicide attempts compared to other youth who did not experience sports- or physical activity-related concussion. Findings highlight increased risk for adverse mental health outcomes among students with sports-or physical activity related concussions. Providing resources for students to engage in physical activity and sports teams may help prevent the onset of depression and suicidal behaviors; however, resources must also be available to monitor any concussions related to these activities to provide support for student emotional well-being.

Abstract
Importance Prior research has shown a statistically significant association between sustaining a concussion and suicidality in adolescents, but this prior research controlled for relatively few variables predictive of suicidality. Objective To examine whether sustaining a concussion remained a significant predictor of suicidality after controlling for relevant covariates (e.g., sexual abuse/assault, bullying, substance use, depression), hypothesizing that the relationship between concussion and suicidality would become non-significant after controlling for these variables. Design This study involved secondary data analysis of the 2019 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance (YRBS) System, a national cross-sectional study of adolescents. Analyses were stratified by gender. Setting A national sampling of U.S. high school students. Participants Eleven thousand two hundred sixty-two students in the YRBS database, including 5,483 boys and 5,779 girls. Exposure(s) Participants included in the analyses reported whether, in the last year, they experienced a concussion and/or suicidality. Main Outcomes and Measures The main outcome was suicidality (i.e., ideation, planning, attempt), which was predicted by concussion in an unadjusted analysis and by concussion along with other risk factors in a multivariable analysis. Results The final sample included 11,262 participants with available data on concussion and suicidality in the last year (14–18 years-old; 51.3% girls; 49.0% White). Per unadjusted odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals, there was a relationship between concussion and suicidal ideation [girls: OR = 1.46 (1.24, 1.73); boys: OR = 1.69 (1.41, 2.03)], planning (girls: OR = 1.39 [1.16, 1.66]; boys: OR = 1.76 [1.44, 2.14]), and attempt [girls: OR = 1.70 (1.32, 2.19); boys: OR = 3.13, (2.37, 4.15)]. These relationships became mostly non-significant after controlling for relevant risk factors for suicidality. The adjusted odds ratios showed no relationship between concussion and suicidal ideation [girls: OR = 1.11 (0.86, 1.44); boys: OR = 1.24 (0.92, 1.69)] or planning (girls: OR = 1.07 [0.82, 1.40]; boys: OR = 1.12 [0.82, 1.55]); but a significant relationship with suicide attempts in boys [OR = 1.98 (1.28, 3.04)], but not girls [OR = 1.05 (0.74, 1.49)]. Conclusions and Relevance There was an association between concussion and suicidality in U.S. high school students; however, after controlling for other variables (e.g., depression, sexual abuse/assault, illicit drug use), there was no association between concussion and suicidality aside from a significant relationship between concussion and attempts in boys.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although past studies have examined the adverse impact of sports- and physical activity-related concussions (SPACs) on health and mental health outcomes, there is a dearth of research investigating the association between SPACs and binge drinking and marijuana use. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study is to examine the cross-sectional association between SPACs and binge drinking and marijuana use among adolescents and whether symptoms of depression and suicidal ideation mediate this association. METHODS Data for this study came from the 2017 and 2019 National Youth Risk Behavior Survey. An analytic sample of 17,175 adolescents aged 14-18 years (50.2% male) was analyzed using binary logistic regression. RESULTS Of the 17,175 adolescents, 13.7% engaged in binge drinking and 19.3% used marijuana 30 days preceding the survey date. Approximately one in seven (14.1%) adolescents had SPACs during the past year. Upon controlling for the effects of other factors, adolescents who had SPACs had 1.74 times higher odds of engaging in binge drinking (AOR = 1.74, p<.001, 95% CI = 1.47-2.06) and 1.42 times higher odds of using marijuana (AOR = 1.42, p<.001, 95% CI = 1.24-1.62) than those who did not have SPACs. Symptoms of depression and suicidal ideation explained 12% of the association between SPACs and binge drinking, and 19% of the association between SPACs and marijuana use. CONCLUSIONS Understanding the association between SPACs and substance use and mental health could contribute to early identification of adolescents who may engage in substance use.

Background:
As rates of pediatric concussion have steadily risen, and concerns regarding its consequences have emerged, pediatric concussion has received increased attention in research and clinical spheres. Accordingly, there has been a commitment to determine how best to prevent and manage this injury that so commonly affects young people. Despite this increased attention, and proliferation of research, pediatric concussion as a concept has rarely, if ever, been taken up and questioned. That is, little attention has been directed toward understanding what concussion ‘is’, or how young people are regarded in relation to it. As a result, pediatric concussion is understood in decidedly narrow terms, constructed as such by a biomedical way of knowing.
Aim:
We aim to demonstrate how conceptualizing concussion, and young people, ‘otherwise’, enabled the co-production of a more nuanced and complex understanding of the experience of pediatric concussion from the perspective of young people.
Approach:
Drawing on an illustrative case example from a critical qualitative arts-based study, we demonstrate how bringing young people into research as ‘knowers’ enabled us to generate much-needed knowledge about concussion in young people.
Implications:
The critical thinking put forward in this paper suggests a different approach to pediatric concussion, which is shared in the form of implications for clinical and research practice.

Abstract
Mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBIs) are the most common type of brain injury. Timely diagnosis of mTBI is crucial in making 'go/no-go' decision in order to prevent repeated injury, avoid strenuous activities which may prolong recovery, and assure capabilities of high-level performance of the subject. If undiagnosed, mTBI may lead to various short- and long-term abnormalities, which include, but are not limited to impaired cognitive function, fatigue, depression, irritability, and headaches. Existing screening and diagnostic tools to detect acute andearly-stagemTBIs have insufficient sensitivity and specificity. This results in uncertainty in clinical decision-making regarding diagnosis and returning to activity or requiring further medical treatment. Therefore, it is important to identify relevant physiological biomarkers that can be integrated into a mutually complementary set and provide a combination of data modalities for improved on-site diagnostic sensitivity of mTBI. In recent years, the processing power, signal fidelity, and the number of recording channels and modalities of wearable healthcare devices have improved tremendously and generated an enormous amount of data. During the same period, there have been incredible advances in machine learning tools and data processing methodologies. These achievements are enabling clinicians and engineers to develop and implement multiparametric high-precision diagnostic tools for mTBI. In this review, we first assess clinical challenges in the diagnosis of acute mTBI, and then consider recording modalities and hardware implementation of various sensing technologies used to assess physiological biomarkers that may be related to mTBI. Finally, we discuss the state of the art in machine learning-based detection of mTBI and consider how a more diverse list of quantitative physiological biomarker features may improve current data-driven approaches in providing mTBI patients timely diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aims to examine the relationship between self-reported history of concussion and risk factors for completed suicide among middle school students. METHODS We analyzed state-level data from the 2017 YRBS. The study sample was n = 19,254 middle school students in 7 States: Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Kentucky, Nevada, Rhode Island, and Virginia. We conducted multi-level, multivariate logistic regression models to assess the relationship between self-reported concussions and suicidal ideations, planned suicide attempt, and past suicide attempt. RESULTS Approximately 17.8% of the sample self-reported a history of concussion. Self-reported history of concussion was significantly associated with greater odds for history of suicidal ideation (Adj OR: 1.31), planned suicide attempt (Adj OR: 1.36), and past suicide attempt (Adj OR: 1.67). CONCLUSIONS This is the first study to examine the relationship between self-reported concussion and risk factor for completed suicide among middle school students. Research findings mirror similar study done among high school students and young adults. Findings suggest the need to expand prevention programs, intervention strategies and education campaigns to include middle school students.

Abstract
Psychological pain or psychache is intolerable and unacceptable mental pain. This construct plays a key role in the risk of suicide in adolescence. This is a frequent condition in adolescents with depression; a variety of studies propose a bidirectional relationship between these two circumstances. Adolescents with psychological pain are exposed to the risk of suicidal ideation, and behavior. This review aimed to explore psychological pain in adolescents, and the correlation to the risk of suicide. We have conducted, following PRISMA guidelines, a systematic review for the literature on PubMed. Search terms were "Suicide risk in adolescents" AND "Mental Pain in adolescence" OR "Psychological Pain in adolescence". An initial search identified publications 1189. A total of 15 studies met the predefined inclusion criteria and were analyzed. Mental pain is a stronger factor of vulnerability of suicidal ideation and behavior. Intense negative emotions, such as guilt, shame, hopelessness, may become a psychological pain in adolescence, and many studies showed a relation between psychological pain and capability for suicide.
