Feasibility and Acceptability of Dietary Intake Assessment Via 24-Hour Recall and Food Frequency Questionnaire among Women with Low Socioeconomic Status

Impacts of food consumption on biochemical markers and anthropometric variables of women with metabolic syndrome

BACKGROUND

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a group of diseases characterized by insulin resistance. MetS has high prevalence among women, which is impacted by food intake. MetS is related to high level of inflammation; however, the impacts of whole diets on biochemical and anthropometrical markers and the effects on MetS need to be further elucidated. In this case, the objective of this study was to assess the relationship between food intake, biochemical and anthropometrical markers in women with MetS.

METHODS

This is a cross-sectional study, in which 1 hundred and 22 women participated in the assessment of biochemical (glycated hemoglobin, glycaemia, insulin, uric acid, total cholesterol, HDL-c, LDL-c, triglycerides, C-reactive protein) and anthropometrical (body mass, height, waist circumference - WC) variables. Participants also performed blood pressure and 24-hour dietary recall assessments. Out of the 122 participants, 44 (36%, age: 59 ± 11 years) had MetS and were included in the analysis.

RESULTS

The consumption of monounsaturated fats had direct relationship with glycaemia (b = 7.48), whereas the consumption of fibers had inverse relationship with body mass (b = - 0.71) and WC (b = - 0.56).

CONCLUSION

The intake of monounsaturated fats and fiber was related to higher blood sugar levels and lower body mass and WC, respectively. These relationships elucidate and highlight the significance and importance of adequate diet in women with MetS.

Mobile health plus community health worker support for weight management among public housing residents (Path to Health): A randomized controlled trial protocol

Interventions delivered by mobile devices (mHealth interventions) have the potential to increase access to weight management treatment in low-income populations. However, little prior research has examined effects of mHealth programming plus phone-based community health worker (CHW) support for weight management among public housing residents. For our intervention, we first interacted with a community advisory board to collect feedback on proposed intervention components. Transcripts from 5 advisory board meetings were coded and qualitative data was organized into themes. We used these data to inform our ongoing trial, in which public housing residents are randomized to one of three different groups: phone text messaging and digital self-weighing (mHealth only); mHealth intervention plus CHW behavioral phone counseling (mHealth+CHW); or assessment only to evaluate their differential effects on weight loss at 6- and 12-month follow-up. We will examine changes in diet and physical activity behaviors as well as potential mediating and moderating factors. Results of this trial could provide support for technology-based weight management interventions which may have greater potential for scalability and long-term dissemination than face-to-face programming. Development and Relative Validity of the Chronic Kidney Disease Short Food Frequency Questionnaire (CKD SFFQ) to Determine Diet Quality and Dietary Habits among Adults with Chronic Kidney Disease

Limited instruments are available to determine diet quality among US adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The purpose of this study was two-fold: (1) to develop a food frequency questionnaire, CKD SFFQ, for adults with CKD and (2) to validate the CKD SFFQ against two 24-h recalls in determining diet quality (DQ). A 57-item CKD SFFQ was developed through a content validation method. Adults with CKD (n = 46) completed the CKD SFFQ and 2-24-h recalls. Statistical analyses included descriptive statistics, frequencies, t-tests, Pearson correlations, and Bland-Altman plots. All data were analyzed using JMP SAS v15 with statistical significance detected at p < 0.05. Results showed no differences for the overall DQ (p = 0.11) and the nine whole-food components (p = 0.07 to p = 0.44) when comparing the CKD SFFQ to the 2-24-h recalls. Pearson correlation coefficients ranged from -0.39 (refined grains) to 0.60 (greens and beans). Bland-Altman plots showed overall good agreement and there was a systematic trend towards higher estimates with the CKD SFFQ, particularly for overall DQ, total proteins, and dairy. The majority of participants rarely or never consumed grains, fruits, vegetables, seafood, and plant proteins. The CKD SFFQ was demonstrated to be an acceptable method to determine DQ for adults with CKD.

Dietary Intakes, Patterns, and Determinants of Children Under 5 Years from Marginalized Communities in Odisha: A Cross-sectional Study

Pre-school age (3–5 years) children are vulnerable to malnutrition due to poor dietary intake, dietary habits, and socio-economic conditions. Children from marginalized families are more vulnerable than non-marginalized families due to limited access to health- and nutrition-related services, besides other socio-economic factors. This study was done to assess the dietary intakes, patterns, and determinants of pre-school age (3–5 years) children from marginalized populations in two districts of Odisha. We used three different questionnaires, namely general demographic information, single 24-h recall dietary survey, and food frequency questionnaire, to collect data. Dietary patterns were obtained using principal component analysis, and the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) method was applied to estimate the prevalence of inadequate intake. A general linear model of regression was used to investigate the relationship of dietary patterns scores with independent variables. A total of 86 boys (57.3%) and 64 girls (42.7%) were recruited for the study. The majority (more than two-third) of the children had <70% of RDA of iron, vitamin C, and zinc. The three dietary components that best described the dietary patterns among children in the study were vegetarian, non-vegetarian, and mixed patterns. They explained 54.9% of the variability. The ‘vegetarian’ dietary pattern was inversely associated with children whose mothers were illiterate (p = 0.005), who lived in families having per capita family monthly income less than INR 786 (10.3 US$) (p = 0.007), and who were first born (p = 0.04). The dietary patterns may help interventionists in designing programs aimed at preventing malnutrition and chronic diseases among children in marginalized communities.
