Mass spectral behavior of some homoleptic and mixed aryldichalcogenide bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocenenickel(II), palladium(II), and platinum(II), and bis(diisopropylphosphino)ferrocenepalladium(II) complexes

Isolation of Living Conjugated Polymer Chains

Living polymerizations currently play a central role in polymer chemistry. However, one feature of these polymerizations is often overlooked, namely, the isolation of living polymer chains. Herein we report the isolation of living π-conjugated polymer chains, synthesized by catalyst-transfer polycondensation. Successful preservation of the nickel complex at polymer chain ends is evidenced by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, end group analysis, and chain extension experiments. When characterizing living chains by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry, we discovered a unique photoionization-photodissociation fragmentation process for polymers containing a nickel phosphine end group. Living chains are isolated for several types of conjugated polymers as well as discrete living oligomers. Additionally, we are able to recycle the catalysts from the isolated polymer chains. Catalyst recycling after π-conjugated polymerization has previously been impossible without chain isolation. This strategy not only exhibits general applicability to different monomers but also has far-reaching potential for other catalytic systems.

Structural analysis of organometallic compounds with soft ionization mass spectrometry

The analysis of organometallic compounds with mass spectrometry has some special features in comparison with organic and bioorganic compounds. The first step is the choice of a suitable ionization technique, where the electrospray ionization is certainly the best possibility for most classes of organometallic compounds and metal complexes. Some ionization mechanisms of organometallic compounds are comparable to organic molecules, such as protonation/deprotonation, and adduct formation with sodium or potassium ions; however, in many cases, different mechanisms and their combinations complicate the spectra interpretation. Organometallics frequently undergo various types of adduct and polymerization reactions that result in significantly higher masses observed in the spectra in comparison to molecular weights of studied compounds. Metal elements typically have more natural isotopes than common organic elements, which cause characteristic wide distributions of isotopic peaks; for example, tin has ten natural isotopes. The isotopic pattern can be used for the identification of the type and number of metal elements in particular ions. The ionization and fragmentation behavior also depend on the type of metal atom; therefore, our discussion of mass spectra interpretation is divided according to the different type of organometallic compounds. Among various types of mass spectrometers available on the market, trap-based analyzers (linear or spherical ion-traps, Orbitrap) are suitable to study complex fragmentation pathways of organometallic ions and their adducts, whereas high-resolution and high-mass accuracy analyzers (time-of-flight-based analyzers, or Fourier transform-based analyzers-Orbitrap or ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometers) provide accurate masses applicable for the determination of the elemental composition of individual ions.

MALDI-TOFMS analysis of coordination and organometallic complexes: a nic(h)e area to work in

A mini-review of the characterisation of metal-containing compounds by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOFMS) is presented. Organometallic and coordination compounds have many varied applications, most notably in industrial catalytic processes and also in the electronics and healthcare sectors. In general, the compounds discussed, be they small or large molecules, have a high percentage metal content, rather than simply containing 'a metal atom'. A brief history of the field is given, but the main scope over the last 5 years is covered in some detail. How MALDI-TOFMS compliments electrospray for metal-containing compounds is highlighted. Perspectives on recent advances, such as solvent-free and air/moisture-sensitive sample preparation, and potential future challenges and developments, such as nanomaterials and metallodrug/metallometabolite imaging, are given.

Application of flavonoids - quercetin and rutin - as new matrices for matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometric analysis of Pt(II) and Pd(II) complexes

Attempts are being made to overcome the resistance of tumour cells to platinum (Pt) drugs by the synthesis of new generations of Pt complexes, and it is important to find appropriate and simple methods for the characterization of those novel complexes. The additional applicability of such a method for the analysis of the interactions of metal complexes with biomolecules would be advantageous. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOFMS) seems to possess the capability to become this method of choice, since it could be applied to low-mass complexes as well as for the analysis of large biomolecules. In this work the applicability of flavonoids - quercetin and rutin - as matrices for MALDI-TOFMS analysis of dichlorido(ethylendiamine)platinum(II) ([PtCl(2)(en)]), dichlorido(diaminocyclohexane)platinum(II) ([PtCl(2)(dach)]) and chloride (diethylenetriamine) palladium(II) chloride ([PdCl(dien)]Cl) complexes is demonstrated. Spectra of Pt(II) and Pd(II) complexes recorded in the presence of quercetin and rutin are rather simple: Pt(II) complexes generate [M+Na](+) or [M+K](+)ions, whereas the investigated Pd(II) complex gives ions generated by the loss of one Cl(-) or HCl. Flavonoids give a relatively small number of well-defined ions in the low-mass region (at m/z 303.3 for quercetin and m/z 633.5 for rutin). Quercetin and rutin can be applied in much lower concentrations than other common MALDI matrices and require rather low laser intensity. We speculate that flavonoids stabilize the structures of the metal complexes and that they may be useful for the analysis of other biologically active metal complexes, thus implying their broader applicability.
