Metalation of metal-organic frameworks: fundamentals and applications

Metalation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been developed as a prominent strategy for materials functionalization for pore chemistry modulation and property optimization. By introducing exotic metal ions/complexes/nanoparticles onto/into the parent framework, many metallized MOFs have exhibited significantly improved performance in a wide range of applications. In this review, we focus on the research progress in the metalation of metal-organic frameworks during the last five years, spanning the design principles, synthetic strategies, and potential applications. Based on the crystal engineering principles, a minor change in the MOF composition through metalation would lead to leveraged variation of properties. This review starts from the general strategies established for the incorporation of metal species within MOFs, followed by the design principles to graft the desired functionality while maintaining the porosity of frameworks. Facile metalation has contributed a great number of bespoke materials with excellent performance, and we summarize their applications in gas adsorption and separation, heterogeneous catalysis, detection and sensing, and energy storage and conversion. The underlying mechanisms are also investigated by state-of-the-art techniques and analyzed for gaining insight into the structure-property relationships, which would in turn facilitate the further development of design principles. Finally, the current challenges and opportunities in MOF metalation have been discussed, and the promising future directions for customizing the next-generation advanced materials have been outlined as well.

Recent advances in atomic cluster synthesis: a perspective from chemical elements

Despite its potential significance, "cluster chemistry" remains a somewhat marginalized topic within the chemistry field. However, atomic clusters with their unusual and unique structures and properties represent a novel material group situated between molecules and nanoparticles or solid matter, judging from both scientific standpoints and historical backgrounds. Surveying an entire material group, including all substances that can be regarded as a cluster, is essential for establishing cluster chemistry as a more prominent chemistry field. This review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding by categorizing, summarizing, and reviewing clusters, focusing on their constituent elements in the periodic table. However, because numerous disparate synthetic processes have been individually developed to date, their straightforward and uniform classification is a challenging task. As such, comprehensively reviewing this field from a chemical composition viewpoint presents significant obstacles. It should be therefore noted that despite adopting a synthetic method-based classification in this review, the discussions presented herein could entail inaccuracies. Nevertheless, this unorthodox viewpoint unfolds a new scientific perspective which accentuates the common ground between different development processes by emphasizing the lack of a definitive border between their synthetic methods and material groups, thus opening new avenues for cementing cluster chemistry as an attractive chemistry field.

Conceptual and Practical Aspects of Metal-Organic Frameworks for Solid-Gas Reactions

The presence of site-isolated and well-defined metal sites has enabled the use of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as catalysts that can be rationally modulated. Because MOFs can be addressed and manipulated through molecular synthetic pathways, they are chemically similar to molecular catalysts. They are, nevertheless, solid-state materials and therefore can be thought of as privileged solid molecular catalysts that excel in applications involving gas-phase reactions. This contrasts with homogeneous catalysts, which are overwhelmingly used in the solution phase. Herein, we review theories dictating gas phase reactivity within porous solids and discuss key catalytic gas-solid reactions. We further treat theoretical aspects of diffusion within confined pores, the enrichment of adsorbates, the types of solvation spheres that a MOF might impart on adsorbates, definitions of acidity/basicity in the absence of solvent, the stabilization of reactive intermediates, and the generation and characterization of defect sites. The key catalytic reactions we discuss broadly include reductive reactions (olefin hydrogenation, semihydrogenation, and selective catalytic reduction), oxidative reactions (oxygenation of hydrocarbons, oxidative dehydrogenation, and carbon monoxide oxidation), and C-C bond forming reactions (olefin dimerization/polymerization, isomerization, and carbonylation reactions).

Metal-Organic Frameworks as bio- and heterogeneous catalyst supports for biodiesel production

As biodiesel (BD)/Fatty Acid Alkyl Esters (FAAE) is derived from vegetable oils and animal fats, it is a cost-effective alternative fuel that could complement diesel. The BD is processed from different catalytic routes of esterification and transesterification through homogeneous (alkaline and acid), heterogeneous and enzymatic catalysis. However, heterogeneous catalysts and biocatalysts play an essential role towards a sustainable alternative to homogeneous catalysts applied in biodiesel production. The main drawback is the supporting material. To overcome this, currently, Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) have gained significant interest as supports for catalysts due to their extremely high surface area and numerous binding sites. This review focuses on the advantages of using various MOFs structures as supports for heterogeneous catalysts and biocatalysts for the eco-friendly biodiesel production process. The characteristics of these materials and their fabrication synthesis are briefly discussed. Moreover, we address in a general way basic items ranging from biodiesel synthesis to applied catalysts, giving great importance to the enzymatic part, mainly to the catalytic mechanism in esterification/transesterification reactions. We provide a summary with recommendations based on the limiting factors.

Encapsulating Cobalt into N-Doping Hollow Frameworks for Efficient Cascade Catalysis

The development of nonprecious catalysts for hydrogenation of organic molecules is of great importance in heterogeneous catalysis. Herein, we report a series of N-doped hollow carbon frameworks encompassing cobalt nanoparticles (denoted as Co@NHF-900) constructed as a new kind of reusable catalyst for this purpose by pyrolysis of ZIF-8@Co-dopamine under Ar atmospheres. Notably, the framework of ZIF-8 is essential for efficient catalyst by providing a carbon framework to support Co-dopamine. The experimental results reveal that the ZIF-8 renders a large hollow place within the catalysts, allowing the enrichment of the substrate and windows of the hollow structure and the ease of mass transfer of products during the reaction. All of the virtues made Co@NHF-900 a good candidate for hydrogenation of quinolines with high activity (TOF value of 119 h^-1, which is several times than that of akin catalysts) and chemoselectivity.

Mass spectrometry for multi-dimensional characterization of natural and synthetic materials at the nanoscale

Characterization of materials at the nanoscale plays a crucial role in in-depth understanding the nature and processes of the substances. Mass spectrometry (MS) has characterization capabilities for nanomaterials (NMs) and nanostructures by offering reliable multi-dimensional information consisting of accurate mass, isotopic, and molecular structural information. In the last decade, MS has emerged as a powerful nano-characterization technique. This review comprehensively summarizes the capabilities of MS in various aspects of nano-characterization that greatly enrich the toolbox of nano research. Compared with other characterization techniques, MS has unique capabilities for real-time monitoring and tracking reaction intermediates and by-products. Moreover, MS has shown application potential in some novel aspects, such as MS imaging of the biodistribution and fate of NMs in animals and humans, stable isotopic tracing of NMs, and risk assessment of NMs, which deserve update and integration into the current knowledge framework of nano-characterization.

Elucidating and Tuning Catalytic Sites on Zirconium- and Aluminum-Containing Nodes of Stable Metal-Organic Frameworks

ConspectusMetal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a huge, rapidly growing class of crystalline, porous materials that consist of inorganic nodes linked by organic struts. Offering the advantages of thermal stability combined with high densities of accessible reactive sites, some MOFs are good candidate materials for applications in catalysis and separations. Such MOFs include those with nodes that are metal oxide clusters (e.g., Zr₆O₈, Hf₆O₈, and Zr₁₂O₂₂) and long rods (e.g., [Al(OH)]_n). These nanostructured metal oxides are often compared with bulk metal oxides, but they are in essence different because their structures are not the same and because the MOFs have a high degree of uniformity, offering the prospect of a deep understanding of reactivity that is barely attainable for most bulk metal oxides because of their surface heterogeneity. This prospect is being realized as it has become evident that adventitious components on MOF node surfaces, besides the linkers, are crucial. These ligands arise from modulators, solvents, or products of solvent decomposition in MOF synthesis solutions, and because they are minor components that are often irregularly placed on defects, they may not show up in X-ray diffraction (XRD) crystal structures. Hydroxyl groups on the nodes (like those on bulk metal oxides) are regarded as native functional groups arising from solvent water, but they may barely be present initially, with common ligands instead being formate and acetate formed from modulators formic acid and acetic acid. (Formate also arises from the decomposition of dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent.) Replacement and control of the node ligands is facilitated by postsynthesis reactions (e.g., with alcohols or aqueous HCl/H₂SO₄ solutions) or as a result of high-temperature decomposition. In catalysis, adventitious node ligands can be (a) reaction inhibitors that block active sites on the nodes (e.g., formate blocking Zr, Hf, or Al Lewis acid sites); (b) reaction intermediates (e.g., ethoxy in ethanol dehydration); or (c) active sites themselves (e.g., terminal OH groups in tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) dehydration). Surprisingly, in view of the catalytic importance of such ligands on bulk metal oxides, their subtle chemistry on MOF nodes is only recently being determined. We describe (1) methods for identifying and quantifying node ligands (especially by IR spectroscopy and by ¹H NMR spectroscopy of MOFs digested in NaOH/D₂O solutions); (2) node ligand surface chemistry expressed as reaction networks; (3) catalysis, with mechanisms and energetics determined by density functional theory (DFT) and spectroscopy; and (4) MOF unzipping by reactions of linker carboxylate ligands with reactants such as alcohols that break node-linker bonds, a cause of catalyst deactivation and also an indicator of node-linker bond strength and MOF stability.

Polymer-induced polymorphism in a Zn-based metal organic framework

Several MOF polymorphs exhibit enhanced properties compared to their previously known structures, motivating the development of polymorphic control methods. Here, we study polymorphism in the ZIF-8/ZIF-L system as a function of metal : ligand ratio during synthesis and show a significant shift in the phase transition point towards ZIF-8 with addition of dilute polyethylene oxide during synthesis. Computational results suggest a simple pathway for controlling MOF polymorphism where the choice of polymer can be guided via first-principles simulations.

Towards complete elucidation of structural factors controlling thermal stability of IL/MOF composites: effects of ligand functionalization on MOFs

In this work, we incorporated an ionic liquid (IL), 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium methyl sulfate ([BMIM][MeSO4]) into two different metal organic frameworks (MOFs), UiO-66, and its amino-functionalized counterpart, NH2-UiO-66, to investigate the effects of ligand-functionalization on the thermal stability limits of IL/MOF composites. The as-synthesized IL/MOF composites were characterized in detail by combining x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis, x-ray fluorescence, infrared spectroscopies (FTIR), and their thermal stability limits were determined by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Characterization data confirmed the successful incorporation of the IL into each MOF and indicated the presence of direct interactions between them. A comparison of the interactions in [BMIM][MeSO4]-incorporated UiO-66 and NH2-UiO-66 with those in their 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([BMIM][PF6])-incorporated counterparts showed that the hydrophilic IL, [BMIM][MeSO4], interacts with the 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate (BDC) ligand of the UiO-66, while the hydrophobic IL, [BMIM][PF6], is interacting with the joints where zirconium metal cluster coordinates with BDC ligand. The TGA data demonstrated that the composite with the ligand-functionalized MOF, NH2-UiO-66, exhibited a lower percentage decrease in the maximum tolerable temperature compared to those of IL/UiO-66 composites. Moreover, it is discovered that when the IL is hydrophilic, its hydrogen bonding ability can be utilized to designate an interaction site on MOF's ligand structure, leads to a lower reduction in thermal stability limits. These results provide insights for the rational design of IL/MOF composites and contribute towards the complete elucidation of structural factors controlling the thermal stability.

Electronic Structure Modeling of Metal-Organic Frameworks

Owing to their molecular building blocks, yet highly crystalline nature, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) sit at the interface between molecule and material. Their diverse structures and compositions enable them to be useful materials as catalysts in heterogeneous reactions, electrical conductors in energy storage and transfer applications, chromophores in photoenabled chemical transformations, and beyond. In all cases, density functional theory (DFT) and higher-level methods for electronic structure determination provide valuable quantitative information about the electronic properties that underpin the functions of these frameworks. However, there are only two general modeling approaches in conventional electronic structure software packages: those that treat materials as extended, periodic solids, and those that treat materials as discrete molecules. Each approach has features and benefits; both have been widely employed to understand the emergent chemistry that arises from the formation of the metal-organic interface. This Review canvases these approaches to date, with emphasis placed on the application of electronic structure theory to explore reactivity and electron transfer using periodic, molecular, and embedded models. This includes (i) computational chemistry considerations such as how functional, k-grid, and other model variables are selected to enable insights into MOF properties, (ii) extended solid models that treat MOFs as materials rather than molecules, (iii) the mechanics of cluster extraction and subsequent chemistry enabled by these molecular models, (iv) catalytic studies using both solids and clusters thereof, and (v) embedded, mixed-method approaches, which simulate a fraction of the material using one level of theory and the remainder of the material using another dissimilar theoretical implementation.
