Responsive nanocellulose-PNIPAM millicapsules

HYPOTHESIS

Milli- and micro-capsules are developed to facilitate the controlled release of diverse active ingredients by passive diffusion or a triggered burst. As applications expand, capsules are required to be increasingly multi-functional, combining benefits like encapsulation, response, release, and even movement. Balancing the increasingly complex demands of capsules is a desire to minimize material usage, requiring efficient structural and chemical design. Designing multifunctional capsules with complex deformation should be possible even after minimizing the material usage through use of sparse fiber networks if the fibers are coated with responsive polymers.

EXPERIMENTS

Here capsules are created with a shell made from a mesh of nanoscale bacterial cellulose fibers that provide mechanical strength at very low mass levels, while a coating of thermoresponsive Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), PNIPAM, on the fibers provides control of permeability, elastic response, and temperature response. These properties are varied by grafting different amounts of polymer using particular reaction conditions.

FINDINGS

The addition of PNIPAM to the cellulose mesh capsule enhances its mechanical properties, enabling it to undergo large deformations and recover once stress is removed. The increased elastic response of the capsule also provides reinforcement against drying-induced capillary stresses, limiting the degree of shrinkage during dehydration. Time-lapse microscopy demonstrates thermoreversible swelling of the capsules in response to temperature change. Cycles of swelling and shrinkage drive solvent convection to and from the capsule interior, allowing exchange of contents and mixing with the bulk fluid on a time scale of seconds. Because the cellulose capsules are produced via emulsion-templated fermentation, the polymer-modified biocapsule concept introduced here presents a pathway toward the sustainable and scalable manufacture of multifunctional responsive capsules.

Chemical magnetism - surface force to move motors

If redox reactions occur on the surface of a motor and a current loop arises, then in a non-uniform magnetic field, in addition to the usual magnetic force, such a motor will also be affected by a chemical magnetic force. The chemical magnetic force belongs to the class of surface forces. Here we analyze for the first time the properties of chemical magnets, which consist of three dissimilar metals, as well as the magnetic field generated by a chemical magnet using paramagnetic nanoparticles. The results of the study show that the chemical magnetic force depends on the concentration and type of electrolyte, the pH of the solution, the temperature, and the structure of the chemical magnet. The results obtained can contribute to the creation of devices where chemical energy is directly converted into kinetic energy of motion.

Buoyancy-Driven Micro/-Nanomotors: From Fundamentals to Applications

The progression of self-powered micro/-nanomotors (MNMs) has rapidly evolved over the past few decades, showing applications in various fields such as nanotechnology, biomedical engineering, microfluidics, environmental science, and energy harvesting. Miniaturized MNMs transduce chemical/biochemical energies into mechanical motion for navigating through complex fluidic environments with directional control via external forces fields such as magnetic, photonic, and electric stimuli. Among various propulsion mechanisms, buoyancy-driven MNMs have received noteworthy recognition due to their simplicity, efficiency, and versatility. Buoyancy force-driven motors harness the principles of density variation-mediated force to overcome fluidic resistance to navigate through complex environments. Restricting the propulsion in one direction helps to control directional movement, making it more efficient in isotropic solutions. The changes in pH, ionic strength, chemical concentration, solute gradients, or the presence of specific molecules can influence the motion of buoyancy-driven MNMs as evidenced by earlier reports. This review aims to provide a fundamental and detailed analysis of the current state-of-the-art in buoyancy-driven MNMs, aiming to inspire further research and innovation in this promising field.

Motion of magnetic motors across liquid-liquid interface

HYPOTHESIS

In a number of applications related to chemical engineering and drug delivery, magnetic nanoparticles should move through a liquid-liquid interface in the presence of surfactant molecules. However, due to the action of capillary forces, this is not always possible. The mechanism of particle motion through the interface essentially depends on the intensity of the Marangoni flow, which is induced on the interface during its deformation.

EXPERIMENTS

In this paper we study the motion of nanoparticles Fe3O4 through the water-tridecane interface under the action of a nonuniform magnetic field when using different surfactants.

FINDINGS

If the linear size of the magnetic motor turns out to be less than a certain critical value, then it is not able to move between phases due to the action of capillary forces on the interface. Depending on the type and concentration of the surfactant used, various mechanisms for the motor motion through the liquid-liquid interface can be carried out. In one of them, a liquid phase is transferred through the interface along with a movable motor, while in the other, it is not.
