Abstract
OBJECTIVES The study aimed to evaluate the brief F3ALLS assessment's validity in screening fall risk. DESIGN This is a cross sectional and longitudinal study. SETTING Participants were recruited from outpatient primary care clinics. PARTICIPANTS Older ambulatory adults ages 65-90 volunteered for this study. MEASUREMENTS Falls risk was measured with TGBA and F3ALLS questionnaires. A 6-month follow-up period assessed for falls using falls diaries and chart review. RESULTS Participants (n=97) were older adults ages 73.91±6.4, 68% (n=66) female. 31% of participants reported at least one fall at 6-months. F3ALLS scores were higher in participants who reported 1 or more falls at 6-months follow-up (3.23±1.5). Higher F3ALLS scores were associated with 6-month fall risk (OR=1.463, 95% CI=1.098-1.949). A score > 3 stratified patients as at risk of falling (AUC=0.77, P<.001; Sensitivity=0.65, Specificity=0.71). CONCLUSION The F3ALLS questionnaire adequately classifies person at risk versus not at risk for falls, and higher (worse) F3ALLS scores are associated with falls over 6 months.

Abstract
Type 2 Diabetes mellitus (DM2) affects 9.3% of the U.S. population. Health disparities are evident in DM2; twice as many Hispanics as non-Hispanic Whites have DM2. The objective of this study was to pilot test the feasibility of implementing and evaluating trends of nutrition and exercise interventions to improve diabetes management and physical function in 29 disadvantaged older Hispanics with DM2. We delivered combined diet and exercise (n = 8) and diet-only (n = 6) interventions and compared the results to a control/no intervention group (n = 15). We cluster-randomized the participants into the three arms based on the senior center they attended. The interventions were delivered twice a week for 3 months (24 sessions) and assessments were conducted pre and post intervention. The results indicate the feasibility of implementing the interventions and slight improvements in both intervention groups compared to the control group. The diet-only group tended to have larger improvements on body composition measures (especially in muscle mass), while the diet + exercise group tended to have larger improvements on physical function (especially in chair stands). There was a high rate of attrition, especially in the diet + exercise group, but those who completed the intervention tended to have improvements in body composition and physical function.

Abstract
The prevalence of diabetes among Americans aged 65 years and older is greater than 25%. Medical expenditures for persons with diabetes are more than twice as high as those for patients without diabetes. Diabetes in older adults often times coexists with frailty, resulting in reduced quality of life and increased health-care use. Many older adults with type 2 diabetes have mobility impairments and experience falls, which contributes to increased frailty. Exercise has a protective effect for frailty and falls, yet less than half of persons with diabetes exercise and approximately one-quarter meet exercise recommendations. In addition to exercise, nutrition may help reduce the risk for falls; however, nutritional interventions have not been tested as a fall-prevention intervention. According to a review, there is insufficient evidence to create nutritional guidelines specific for frail older adults with type 2 diabetes. There is a need to motivate and empower older adults with type 2 diabetes to make lifestyle changes to prevent frailty. The purpose of this review was to identify and integrate what is known and what still needs to be done for this population to be successful in making health behavior changes to reduce frailty. There is some evidence that motivational approaches have worked for older adults with various chronic disease conditions. However, studies applying motivational strategies are lacking for frail older adults with type 2 diabetes. A novel motivational approach was described; it combines aspects of the Health Belief Model and Motivational Interviewing. Intervention studies incorporating this model are needed to determine whether this client-driven strategy can help various racial/ethnic populations make the sustainable health behavior changes of increasing exercise and healthy eating while taking into consideration physiological, psychological, and economic barriers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Little is known about the dietary intake of these nutrients in stroke survivors, who often experience greater difficulties with physical functioning due to cognitive impairment. OBJECTIVES To explore whether dietary intake and physical function differ between those with and without self-report cognitive impairment. METHODS The present study analyzes data from the 2011-2012 and 2013-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Individuals were included if they self-reported a stroke and had data regarding cognitive impairment (self-reported "periods of confusion or memory problems") and dietary intake from 24-hr recalls (N = 360). A subset had handgrip strength (N = 330) and questionnaire data regarding the presence of 19 different functional limitations (N = 187). RESULTS Of the 360 stroke survivor participants (66 ± 1 years, 53% female, mean±SEM), 48% reported cognitive impairment. Dietary intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids was 19% lower (p = 0.01), with a trend for 13% lower vitamin B6 intake (p = 0.07) in those with cognitive impairment compared to those who did not. Those with cognitive impairment had lower handgrip strength and reported twice as many functional limitations (p's<0.01). CONCLUSION A lower intake of polyunsaturated fat and vitamin B6 may be associated with cognitive function, ultimately affecting physical functioning, post-stroke. It is possible that differing stroke severity and difficulty recalling dietary habits could have affected the present findings. Therefore, further research is needed to determine if interventions designed to modify polyunsaturated fat and vitamin B6 intakes are able to influence cognitive and physical function in stroke survivors with varying degrees of functional and cognitive deficits.

Abstract
Diabetes causes memory loss. Hippocampus is responsible for memory and increased apoptosis was found in diabetes patients. Taurine improved memory in diabetes condition. However, mechanism is unclear. In current study, hippocampal cell line HT-22 cells were subjected to analysis as five groups i.e. Control, High glucose (HG) at concentration of 150 mM, HG + 10 mM (T1), 20 mM (T2) and 40 mM (T3) taurine solution. TUNEL assay showed that HG increased the number of apoptotic cell significantly while taurine reduced apoptosis. Taurine increased phosphorylation of Akt in HT-22 cell treated with HG, and increased phosphorylation of Bad (p-Bad) was seen suggesting involvement of Akt/Bad signaling pathway. Expression of Bcl-2 was reduced in HG group but taurine improved this. Bax expression showed opposite trend. This indicated that taurine may reduce apoptosis by controlling balance of Bcl-2 and Bax. When the activation of Akt was blocked by using of perifosine, the effect of taurine disappears either partially or altogether. Thus, it was clear that taurine reduces apoptosis via Akt/Bad pathway in HT-22 cells exposed to HG which further improves downstream balance of Bcl-2 and Bax. This mechanism may be involved in apoptosis of hippocampus cells in diabetic condition.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The study aims to examine the effects of diabetes and depression on executive functioning (EF) and to review the effects of EF deficits on diabetes management. RECENT FINDINGS Both type 2 diabetes and depression influence EF, and in turn, EF has an impact on diabetes management. Individuals with both comorbidities (i.e., diabetes and depression) experience greater deficits in EF than individuals with just one of the morbidities (i.e., depression or diabetes). The disruption in EF results in poor diabetes management and poor emotion regulation which ultimately increases the probability of a recursive cycle of depression and hyperglycemia. This recursive cycle can ultimately lead to diabetes-related complications.

Abstract
Diets in rats and humans have shown promising results. Taurine improved glucagon activity, promoted glycemic stability, modified glucose levels, successfully addressed hyperglycemia via advanced glycation end-product control, improved insulin secretion and had a beneficial effect on insulin resistance. Taurine treatment performed well against oxidative stress in brain, increased the secretion of required hormones and protected against neuropathy, retinopathy and nephropathy in diabetes compared with the control. Taurine has been observed to be effective in treatments against diabetic hepatotoxicity, vascular problems and heart injury in diabetes. Taurine was shown to be effective against oxidative stress. The mechanism of action of taurine cannot be explained by one pathway, as it has many effects. Several of the pathways are the advanced glycation end-product pathway, PI3-kinase/AKT pathway and mitochondrial apoptosis pathway. The worldwide threat of diabetes underscores the urgent need for novel therapeutic measures against this disorder. Taurine (2-aminoethane sulfonic acid) is a natural compound that has been studied in diabetes and diabetes-induced complications.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus (DM) has been studied recently as a major cause of cognitive deficits, memory and neurodegenerative damage. Taurine and enriched environment have stood out for presenting neuroprotective and stimulating effects that deserve further study. In this paper, we examined the effects of taurine and enriched environment in the context of diabetes, evaluating effects on behaviour, memory, death and cellular activity. Eighty-eight Wistar rats were divided into 2 groups (E=enriched environment; C=standard housing). Some animals (24/group) underwent induction of diabetes, and within each group, some animals (half of diabetics (D) and half of non-diabetics (ND)/group) were treated for 30days with taurine (T). Untreated animals received saline (S). In total, there were eight subgroups: DTC, DSC, NDTC, NDSC, DTE, DSE, NDTE and NDSE. During the experiment, short-term memory was evaluated. After 30th day of experiment, the animals were euthanized and was made removal of brains used to immunohistochemistry procedures for GFAP and cleaved caspase-3. As a result, we observed that animals treated with taurine showed better performance in behavioural and memory tasks, and the enriched environment had positive effects, especially in non-diabetic animals. Furthermore, taurine and enriched environment seemed to be able to interfere with neuronal apoptosis and loss of glial cells, and in some instances, these two factors seemed to have synergistic effects. From these data, taurine and enriched environment may have important neurostimulant and neuroprotective effects.
