Pretreatments for enhanced biomethane production from buckwheat hull: Effects on organic matter degradation and process sustainability

Insights into the recent advances of agro-industrial waste valorization for sustainable biogas production

Recent years have seen a transition to a sustainable circular economy model that uses agro-industrial waste biomass waste to produce energy while reducing trash and greenhouse gas emissions. Biogas production from lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) is an alternative option in the hunt for clean and renewable fuels. Different approaches are employed to transform the LCB to biogas, including pretreatment, anaerobic digestion (AD), and biogas upgradation to biomethane. To maintain process stability and improve AD performance, machine learning (ML) tools are being applied in real-time monitoring, predicting, and optimizing the biogas production process. An environmental life cycle assessment approach for biogas production systems is essential to calculate greenhouse gas emissions. The current review presents a detailed overview of the utilization of agro-waste for sustainable biogas production. Different methods of waste biomass processing and valorization are discussed that contribute towards developing an efficient agro-waste to biogas-based circular economy.

Ultrasonic Processing of Food Waste to Generate Value-Added Products

Ultrasonic processing has a great potential to transform waste from the food and agriculture industry into value-added products. In this review article, we discuss the use of ultrasound for the valorisation of food and agricultural waste. Ultrasonic processing is considered a green technology as compared to the conventional chemical extraction/processing methods. The influence of ultrasound pre-treatment on the soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD), particle size, and cell wall content of food waste is first discussed. The use of ultrasonic processing to produce/extract bioactives such as oil, polyphenolic, polysaccharides, fatty acids, organic acids, protein, lipids, and enzymes is highlighted. Moreover, ultrasonic processing in bioenergy production from food waste such as green methane, hydrogen, biodiesel, and ethanol through anaerobic digestion is also reviewed. The conversion of waste oils into biofuels with the use of ultrasound is presented. The latest developments and future prospective on the use of ultrasound in developing energy-efficient methods to convert food and agricultural waste into value-added products are summarised.

Isolation, Characterization, and Depolymerization of l-Cysteine Substituted Eucalyptus Lignin

Lignin condensation reactions are hard to avoid or control during separation, which is a deterrent to lignin isolation and post-conversation, especially for the full utilization of lignocelluloses. Selective protection of β-aryl ether linkages in the isolation process is crucial to lignin valorization. Herein, a two-step acid/alkali separation method assisted with l-cysteine for eucalyptus lignin separation is developed, and the isolated l-cysteine lignins (LCLs) are comprehensively characterized by 2D NMR, 31P NMR, thioacidolysis, etc. Compared to the two-step control treatment, a much higher β-O-4 content is preserved without reducing the separation efficiency assisted by l-cysteine, which is also significantly higher than alkali lignin and kraft lignin. The results of hydrogenolysis show that LCLs generate a much higher monomer yield than that of control sample. Structural analysis of LCLs suggests that lignin condensation reaction, to some extent, is suppressed by adding l-cysteine during the two-step acid/alkali separation. Further, mechanistic studies using dimeric model compound reveals that l-cysteine may be the α-carbon protective agent in the two-step separation. The role of l-cysteine in the two-step lignin isolation method provides novel insights to the selective fractionation of lignin from biomass, especially for the full valorization of lignocellulosic biomass.

Frankfurter-Type Sausage Enriched with Buckwheat By-Product as a Source of Bioactive Compounds

Buckwheat by-products may be used as promising food ingredients due to their nutritional composition. Buckwheat husk (BH) may be used in meat products as a source of valuable compounds. In this study, the addition of BH to the quality of frankfurter-type sausages was investigated, aiming to reduce buckwheat waste and to develop nutritionally enriched sausages. For the purpose of this study, a range of measurements, as well as observations, have been carried out. This included the following: pH, weight losses, yield, the instrumental color and texture measurement, protein digestibility, polyphenols, amino acid, trace elements analysis, and the organoleptic evaluation. Compared with no BH sausages, the cooking losses of sausages with 3% BH were higher, while storage losses were lower. BH increased the hardness of sausages after two weeks of storage. The growing addition of BH resulted in a decrease in L* and b*. This change of color resulted in its lower level of consumer acceptability. BH addition did not reduce the protein digestibility. The total amino acid content increased with the increasing husk addition, from 161.8 mg/kg to 228.0 mg/kg. Moreover, BH increased the content of manganese, calcium, potassium and magnesium. This research suggested that incorporation of BH improved the nutritional value of sausages with minimal changes in technological and sensory properties.

A Review of Pretreatment Methods to Improve Agri-Food Waste Bioconversion by Black Soldier Fly Larvae

As the world population increases, food demand and agricultural activity will also increase. However, ~30–40% of the food produced today is lost or wasted along the production chain. Increasing food demands would only intensify the existing challenges associated with agri-food waste management. An innovative approach to recover the resources lost along the production chain and convert them into value-added product(s) would be beneficial. An alternative solution is the use of the larvae of the black soldier fly (BSFL), Hermetia illucens L., which can grow and convert a wide range of organic waste materials into insect biomass with use as animal feed, fertilizer and/or bioenergy. However, the main concern when creating an economically viable business is the variability in BSFL bioconversion and processing due to the variability of the substrate. Many factors, such as the nutritional composition of the substrate heavily impact BSFL development. Another concern is that substrates with high lignin and cellulose contents have demonstrated poor digestibility by BSFL. Studies suggest that pretreatment methods may improve the digestibility and biodegradability of the substrate by BSFL. However, a systematic review of existing pretreatment methods that could be used for enhancing the bioconversion of these wastes by BSFL is lacking. This paper provides a state-of-the-art review on the potential pretreatment methods that may improve the digestibility of substrates by BSFL and consequently the production of BSFL. These processes include but are not limited to, physical (e.g., mechanical and thermal), chemical (alkaline treatments), and biological (bacterial and fungal) treatments.
