Study on the Structure Characterization and Swelling Properties of the Fe3O4/CMS Composite Membrane

In order to improve the functionality of cellulosic materials research and development of high performance soluble materials. Therefore, the Fe3O4/CMS composite membrane was prepared by using carboxymethyl salix powder (CMS) and Fe3O4 as raw materials, 1-propenyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride and dimethyl sulfoxide as dissolution system. The effects of swelling time, swelling temperature, pH and ionic strength on the swelling performance of Fe3O4/CMS composite membranes and the swelling kinetics of the composite membranes were studied. The structure of the composite membrane was characterized by SEM, FT-IR, XRD and TG. The results showed that the swelling degree reached 5.54 g·g-1, when the swelling time was 45 min, the swelling temperature was 65 °C, the pH was 5 and the ionic strength was 0.08 mol·L-1. The initial phase of dissolution of the composite membrane fits well with the Fickian diffusion model, and the whole dissolution process belongs to the Schott model, indicating that the main role of the dissolution process is the diffusion of water molecules, while the composite membrane can be preserved for a long time at high temperature, which provides sustainability for the composite membrane. The characterization results showed that the surface of Fe3O4/CMS composite film was rough with small grooves. The O-H effect was enhanced and the Fe-O absorption peak appeared at 600 cm-1, indicating that Fe3O4 had been successfully loaded onto the cellulose membrane. The Fe3O4/CMS composite membrane belonged to cellulose type II structure, meanwhile, the composite membrane had good thermal stability.

Design and development of pH-responsive alginate-based nanogel carriers for etoposide delivery

Recently, pH-responsive nanogels are playing progressively important roles in cancer treatment. The present study focuses on designing and developing pH-responsive alginate-based nanogels to achieve a controlled release of etoposide (Et) while enhancing its hydrophilicity. Alginate (ALG) is grafted with 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylamide (HPMA) through a microwave-supported method, and the chemical structure of the graft copolymer (ALG-g-PHPMA) was verified by 1H/13C NMR and FTIR techniques. The ALG-g-PHPMA and anticancer drug-loaded ALG-g-PHPMA@Et nanogels were obtained using an emulsion method, and their structures were characterized through FTIR, TG/DSC, AFM/TEM, BET, and DLS analyses. The ALG-g-PHPMA nanogels demonstrated a good drug encapsulation efficiency (79.60 %), displaying a pH-dependent release profile and an in vitro accelerated release of Et compared to the ALG nanogels. Thermal and BET analyses revealed enhanced stability, surface area, and porosity volume of the alginate nanogels. The grafting of PHPMA chains onto alginate altered the surface topology of the ALG nanogels, resulting in lower surface roughness. Furthermore, cytotoxicity tests showed the high biocompatibility of the ALG-g-PHPMA copolymer and its nanogels. The ALG-g-PHPMA@Et nanogels exhibited a higher anticancer effect on lung cancer (H1299) cells than free etoposide. These results suggest that the ALG-g-PHPMA nanogels can be applied as a pH-dependent nanoplatform for delivering anticancer drugs.

Perspectives of nanomaterials in microbial remediation of heavy metals and their environmental consequences: A review

Nanomaterials (NMs) have diverse applications in various sectors, such as decontaminating heavy metals from drinking water, wastewater, and soil. Their degradation efficiency can be enhanced through the application of microbes. As microbial strain releases enzymes, which leads to the degradation of HMs. Therefore, nanotechnology and microbial-assisted remediation-based methods help us develop a remediation process with practical utility, speed, and less environmental toxicity. This review focuses on the success achieved for the bioremediation of heavy metals by nanoparticles and microbial strains and in their integrated approach. Still, the use of NMs and heavy metals (HMs) can negatively affect the health of living organisms. This review describes various aspects of the bioremediation of heavy materials using microbial nanotechnology. Their safe and specific use supported by bio-based technology paves the way for their better remediation. We discuss the utility of nanomaterials for removing heavy metals from wastewater, toxicity studies and issues to the environment with their practical implications. Nanomaterial assisted heavy metal degradation coupled with microbial technology and disposal issues are described along with detection methods. Environmental impact of nanomaterials is also discussed based on the recent work conducted by the researchers. Therefore, this review opens new avenues for future research with an impact on the environment and toxicity issues. Also, applying new biotechnological tools will help us develop better heavy metal degradation routes.

A review on synthesis methods and recent applications of nanomaterial in wastewater treatment: Challenges and future perspectives

Freshwater has been incessantly polluted by various activities such as rapid industrialization, fast growth of population and agricultural activities. Water pollution is considered as one the major threatens to human health and aquatic bodies which causes various severe harmful diseases including gastrointestinal disorders, asthma, cancer, etc. The polluted wastewater could be treated by different conventional and advanced methodologies. Amongst them, adsorption is the most utilized low cost, efficient technique to treat and remove the harmful pollutants from the wastewater. The efficiency of adsorption mainly depends on the surface properties such as functional group availability and surface area of the adsorbents used. Since various waste-based carbon derivatives are utilized as adsorbents for harmful pollutants removal; nanomaterials are employed as effective adsorbents in recent times due to its excellent surface properties. This review presents an overview of the different types of nanomaterials such as nano-particles, nanotubes, nano-sheets, nano-rods, nano-spheres, quantum dots, etc. which have been synthesized by different chemical and green synthesis methodologies using plants, microorganisms, biomolecules and carbon derivatives, metals and metal oxides and polymers. By concentrating on potential research difficulties, this study offers a new viewpoint on fundamental field of nanotechnology for wastewater treatment applications. This review paper critically reviewed the synthesis of nanomaterials more importantly green synthesis and their applications in wastewater treatment to remove the harmful pollutants such as heavy metals, dyes, pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, etc.

Aggregation, solubility and cadmium-adsorption capacity of CuO nanoparticles in aquatic environments: Effects of pH, natural organic matter and component addition sequence

Nanoparticles (NPs), heavy metals and natural organic matter may co-exist in the water bodies. Currently, knowledge on their interaction effects on the behaviors and fates of NPs and heavy metal ions is rather limited, which is critical to comprehensively understand their environmental risk. In this study, the aggregation, solubility and Cd-adsorption of CuO NPs co-existing with humic acid (HA) and Cd²⁺ upon different solution pH and contact sequences were determined. In the ternary systems of CuO NPs, HA and Cd²⁺, pH was more important than the contact sequence of the components in affecting the NP aggregation, while the contact sequence was a predominant factor in determining the NP solubility. Pre-equilibration of CuO NPs and HA before addition of Cd²⁺ resulted in the highest solubility and lowest aggregation of the NPs, relative to other sequences of addition of the components. The adsorption capacity of CuO NPs for Cd-ions increased with an increasing pH value from 5 to 9. HA significantly enhanced the Cd-adsorption capacity of CuO NPs at pH 7 and 9, while at pH 5 a non-significant effect was observed. The results are helpful to better estimate the behaviors and fates of CuO NPs and Cd²⁺ when they coexisting in natural waters.

Nanomaterials: An alternative source for biodegradation of toxic dyes

Environment contamination is a colossal worriment across the world, owing to its detrimental and negative impact on health and ecological systems. Dyes are one of the synthetic organic chemicals that are utilised in a variety of fields, including textiles. As a result, throughout one's production and subsequently in fibre colouring, these are becoming frequent industry-contributed contaminants. Increasing globalisation of international market has presented a problem to textile sector in terms of consistency and production. Textile processors' primary concern, as the highly competitive environment and environmental standards grow more severe is about being mindful of the grade of goods and even non-toxicity of their production processes. There seems to be an immediate necessity to look for methods and technologies which are useful in removing dye colours. Even though each has benefits and weaknesses, many physical, chemical, and biological approaches were explored and used with the application being dependent on the effluent properties, technical feasibility, and cost. Several remediation technologies are already developed, but they seem to be ineffective at removing dyes completely. There is a fast growth of nanoparticles applications in the past few years which has opened up newer, innovating, highly efficient, and low-cost dyes remediation systems. Nanomaterials with large surface areas change surface characteristics and distinctive electron conducting capabilities which make them ideal candidate for the treatment of wastewater that contains dyes. In this review, we have highlighted not only the role of nanotechnology in dye remediation processes but also different types of nanomaterials that can be used for the remediation of dyes.

Sustainable and efficient technologies for removal and recovery of toxic and valuable metals from wastewater: Recent progress, challenges, and future perspectives

Due to their numerous effects on human health and the natural environment, water contamination with heavy metals and metalloids, caused by their extensive use in various technologies and industrial applications, continues to be a huge ecological issue that needs to be urgently tackled. Additionally, within the circular economy management framework, the recovery and recycling of metals-based waste as high value-added products (VAPs) is of great interest, owing to their high cost and the continuous depletion of their reserves and natural sources. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art technologies developed for the removal and recovery of metal pollutants from wastewater by providing an in-depth understanding of their remediation mechanisms, while analyzing and critically discussing the recent key advances regarding these treatment methods, their practical implementation and integration, as well as evaluating their advantages and remaining limitations. Herein, various treatment techniques are covered, including adsorption, reduction/oxidation, ion exchange, membrane separation technologies, solvents extraction, chemical precipitation/co-precipitation, coagulation-flocculation, flotation, and bioremediation. A particular emphasis is placed on full recovery of the captured metal pollutants in various reusable forms as metal-based VAPs, mainly as solid precipitates, which is a powerful tool that offers substantial enhancement of the remediation processes' sustainability and cost-effectiveness. At the end, we have identified some prospective research directions for future work on this topic, while presenting some recommendations that can promote sustainability and economic feasibility of the existing treatment technologies.

Tackling water security: A global need of cross-cutting approaches

The Virtual Special Issue entitled "Tackling Water Security" is mainly focused on water availability, water quality, management, governance, biotic or abiotic emerging contaminants and policy development in the Anthropocene. The issue is further dedicated to highlight the new opportunities and approaches to elevate the efficiency of water treatment and wastewater reuse. It has undergone an open call for papers and rigorous peer-review process, where each submission has been evaluated by the panel of experts. 43 articles have been selected from 85 submissions that represents the ongoing research and development activities. The message that emerged explicitly from nearly a hundred submissions to this special issue is that there is an urgent global need for cross-cutting approaches for the rational, quick, cost-effective and sustainable solutions for tackling water-security in the Anthropocene.

Alginate-based nano-adsorbent materials - Bioinspired solution to mitigate hazardous environmental pollutants

Population growth and industrialization is associated with the elevation of hazardous pollutants, including heavy metals, biomedical wastes, personal-care products, endocrine-disrupters, pharmaceutically active compounds, and colorants in the environment. The scientific focus has been devoted to developing novel adsorbents to mitigate hazardous pollutants by constructing hybrids of different polymers and nano-structured materials for improved workability and physicochemical attributes. Recently, much attention has been devoted to nanomaterials in environmental remediation, owning to their exceptional characteristics including novel electrical/chemical features, quantum size effects, tunable functionalization, high scalability, and surface-area-to-volume ratio. Target-specific designing of nanocomposites impart high functionality. The cost-effective and eco-friendly synthesis of bioadsorbent materials is increasing for the removal of hazardous pollutants. Due to biocompatible, biodegradable, and eco-friendly nature, sodium alginate has been widely reported for the preparation of bioadsorbent materials to remove different inorganic/organic pollutants. In this review, the potentialities of alginate-based nanocomposites have been described for environmental remediation purposes. Different nanomaterials, including silica, metallic oxide, graphene oxide, hybrid inorganic-organic, non-magnetic-magnetic, carbon nanorods, nanotubes, polymeric nanocarriers, and several other materials have been described in combination with alginate biopolymer for environmental remediation.

Flocculation of combined contaminants of dye and heavy metal by nano-chitosan flocculants

In this study, two multifunctional nano-chitosan flocculants (CPAM-NCS1 and CPAM-NCS2) were made through the graft modification of cationic monomer and carboxymethylchitosan (CMCTS) to remove combined contaminants. The effects of various factors (pH, flocculant dosage and hydraulic mixing conditions) on the flocculation performance under single and composite pollution conditions were systematically investigated, the optimal chemical oxygen demand (COD) and the chromaticity removal rates in the dye wastewater were 79.9% and 83.9% at wastewater pH 7, the fast stirring rate 300 rpm, the fast stirring time 8 min, and the dosage of CPAM-NCS1 80 mg/L, respectively. The optimal removal rates of Cu (II) obtained by CPAM-NCS1 and CPAM-NCS2 at were 80.3% and 75.2% at 60 mg/L and the wastewater pH 7, respectively. The optimal removal rates of Cu (II) and disperse orange were 85.3% and 89.4%, respectively, in a composite pollutant system in which Cu (II) and disperse orange coexisted when the pH of the composite system was 9 and the dosage of CPAM -NCS1 was 60 mg/L. This study proved that nanoflocculants made by modifying CMCTS with different structures can demonstrate ideal flocculation removal performance for dye and heavy metal wastewaters.

Functionalized Magnetic Nanomaterials in Agricultural Applications

The development of functional nanomaterials exhibiting cost-effectiveness, biocompatibility and biodegradability in the form of nanoadditives, nanofertilizers, nanosensors, nanopesticides and herbicides, etc., has attracted considerable attention in the field of agriculture. Such nanomaterials have demonstrated the ability to increase crop production, enable the efficient and targeted delivery of agrochemicals and nutrients, enhance plant resistance to various stress factors and act as nanosensors for the detection of various pollutants, plant diseases and insufficient plant nutrition. Among others, functional magnetic nanomaterials based on iron, iron oxide, cobalt, cobalt and nickel ferrite nanoparticles, etc., are currently being investigated in agricultural applications due to their unique and tunable magnetic properties, the existing versatility with regard to their (bio)functionalization, and in some cases, their inherent ability to increase crop yield. This review article provides an up-to-date appraisal of functionalized magnetic nanomaterials being explored in the agricultural sector.

Development of autotrophic and heterotrophic consortia via immobilized microbial beads for chemical wastewater treatment, using PTA wastewater as an approach

Studies on the symbiosis of microalgae-bacteria have been accelerating as a mean for wastewater remediation. However, there were few reports about the microalgae-bacteria consortia for chemical wastewater treatment. The aim of the present study is to develop an autotrophic and heterotrophic consortium for chemical wastewater treatment and probe whether and how bacteria could benefit from the microalgae during the treatment process, using PTA wastewater as an approach. A process-dependent strategy was applied. First of all, the results showed that the sludge beads with the sludge concentration of 30 g/L were the optimal one with the COD removal rate at 84.8% but the ceiling effect occurred (COD removal rate < 90%) even several common reinforcement methods were applied. Additionally, by adding the microalgae Chlorella vulgaris, a microalgae-activated sludge consortium was formed inside the immobilized beads, which provided better performance to shatter the ceiling effect. The COD remove rate was higher than 90%, regardless of the activated sludge was pre-culture or not. COD removal capacity could also be improved (COD removal rate > 92%) when LEDs light belt was offered as an advanced light condition. Biochemical assay and DNA analysis indicated that the microalgae could form an internal circulation of substances within the activated sludge and drove the microbial community to success and the corresponding gene functions, like metabolism and.
