Impact of internet use on pro-environmental behaviour mediated by environmental concern

In the context of sustainable development, Internet technology offers new ideas and approaches for promoting pro-environmental behaviour (PEB) in citizens. Utilising data from the 2021 Chinese General Social Survey, the present study employs ordinary least squares regression and mediation analysis to examine the relationships among Internet use, environmental concern, and PEB. The findings reveal a significant positive correlation between Internet use and PEB, with environmental concern serving as a complete mediator. This correlation remained robust across different model specifications and subsamples. Heterogeneity analysis revealed that the positive effect of Internet use on PEB was significant among high-income individuals, urban residents, and females but not among low-income individuals, rural residents, and males. The study proposes measures to bridge the digital divide in rural areas, encourage and support enterprises to use Internet platforms for green marketing activities and design personalised online training courses tailored to the needs of different socio-economic groups. The findings of the present study enhance our understanding of the underlying mechanism of the impact of information on changes in PEB in the context of a digital age, and it provides strong academic support for advancing the digital transformation of global environmental governance.

Impacts of government social media on public engagement in low-carbon practices focusing on Japan

This study investigates the role of Government Social Media (GSM) in enhancing public engagement with Low-Carbon Practices (LCP) in Japan. Motivated by the need to foster sustainable development and mitigate climate change impacts, this research utilizes negative binomial regression model analyzing 1022 posts from nine Japanese government social media accounts. Our findings reveal that increased media richness negatively correlates with engagement, suggesting that content depth over visual appeal is more effective for LCP-related communication. Surprisingly, the dialogic loop reduces engagement, indicating complex public reactions to governmental initiatives. Content themes related to governmental actions and LCP information significantly enhance engagement, while emotional valence shows minimal impact. The study introduces 'social media capital' as a moderating factor, which mitigates the negative effects of dialogic loops and media richness on engagement, and influences the impact of content themes. These insights provide a foundation for future research and guide the development of effective public engagement strategies in environmental policy. The study highlights the need for nuanced GSM strategies that prioritize information quality and relevance to increase public participation in low-carbon initiatives.

The impact of public demands on local environmental governance performance: Evidence from civil environmental complaints placed on leaders at different government levels in China

The joint participation of multiple subjects is crucial for environmental governance. Using panel data for 273 Chinese cities during 2013-2019, this study investigates the impact and mechanism of public demands on environmental pollution. The results demonstrate that public demands measured by the number of environmental complaints placed on government leaders significantly reduce environmental pollution. Furthermore, increases in the rate and speed of government responses improve the effect of public demands on environmental governance. Public demands placed on provincial leaders reduce local environmental pollution to a greater extent than public demands placed on prefectural and county leaders. Province-level governments are more willing to consider public opinions and attach more importance to environmental governance; Prefecture-level governments prioritize province-level governments' attention to the environment when implementing environmental governance. Moreover, strong political ties between provincial and prefectural leaders and long tenures among prefectural leaders strengthen the pollution reduction effect of public demands placed on provincial leaders. The reduction effect of environmental complaints on pollution emission is more significant in cities with high level of Internet construction and environmental disclosure. Our results illustrate the role of public demands in environmental governance, offering a reference for developing effective environmental policies.

Revealing the hidden carbon flows in global industrial Sectors-Based on the perspective of linkage network structure

This paper interprets the implicit carbon flows in global industrial sectors from a network perspective. Using the SNA-IO integrated model, along with cross-border input-output data from Eora26 (2000-2020) and global energy balance data, the implicit carbon emissions of global industrial sectors and their evolution are analyzed. A carbon emission network structure from an industrial chain perspective is proposed. The results indicate that the carbon emissions responsibility of an industry is not only associated with its own energy consumption. It also involves the carbon emissions transfer resulting from the exchange of products and services between upstream and downstream industries. Block model analysis reveals the carbon emission transfer relationships and their interconnections among global industrial sectors, tending towards an industry clustering pattern where "production side" converges with "demand side" coexisting in supply and demand. There are noticeable inequalities in wealth gains and environmental burdens between these blocks. This paper can provide targeted carbon reduction policy recommendations for various industrial sectors to participate in global responsibility allocation and promote the formation of a low-carbon global industrial sector network.

The sword of damocles: Understanding the carbon abatement effects of top-down environmental management practices -- insights from China's campaign-style governance

Inspection, standing for top-down environmental management practices, also known as campaign-style governance, is used by central governments to lessen local environmental pollution. However, there is no causal evidence for carbon abatement. Employing staggered difference-in-differences (DiD), I find that inspected cities mitigate carbon intensity and carbon emissions by 3.72% and 2.34%, respectively, with economic significance. Conducting a triple difference strategy, I suggest the channels are the local people's congresses and political consultative conferences' proposals, government attention, environmental regulation, industrial structure, and green innovation. Also, the heterogeneous effects suggest that municipal party secretaries assigned to their birthplace, the older the party standing and age, and those with natural sciences majors, are more conducive to the inspection achieving carbon mitigation. An alternative DiD specification shows that the "look-back" inspection achieves sustained carbon reduction. I support the argument that top-down inspection helps achieve resilience to climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
