Dose rate estimation of the Tohoku hynobiid salamander, Hynobius lichenatus, in Fukushima

Dose estimation to wild medaka around Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant

More than 10 y have passed since the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (F1-NPP) accident, but there are still many areas with high levels of radioactive contamination, especially reservoirs and lakes, where the levels decrease slowly. The exposed dose to non-human biota is of great concern. In this work, the exposure dose to wild medaka (small aquarium fish) around F1-NPP was measured/estimated by two approaches: in situ measurement and with the ERICA assessment tool. S2 is a reservoir located 7.5 km from F1-NPP, and the ambient dose rate was 25.0 μSv per h in 2012, but decreased to 4.82 μSv per h in 2021. The external exposure dose rate to wild medaka living there was 0.8-11.8 μGy per h (2017-21) by in situ measurement, and the estimated dose rate with the ERICA assessment tool was 0.6-54.5 μGy per h (2012-21). The estimated and measured doses to wild medaka are not expected to cause any significant radiation effects.

Evaluation of DNA damage and stress in wildlife chronically exposed to low-dose, low-dose rate radiation from the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident

The health effects associated with chronic low-dose, low-dose rate (LD-LDR) exposures to environmental radiation are uncertain. All dose-effect studies conducted outside controlled laboratory conditions are challenged by inherent complexities of ecological systems and difficulties quantifying dose to free-ranging organisms in natural environments. Consequently, the effects of chronic LD-LDR radiation exposures on wildlife health remain poorly understood and much debated. Here, samples from wild boar (Sus scrofa leucomystax) and rat snakes (Elaphe spp.) were collected between 2016 and 2018 across a gradient of radiation exposures in Fukushima, Japan. In vivo biomarkers of DNA damage and stress were evaluated as a function of multiple measurements of radiation dose. Specifically, we assessed frequencies of dicentric chromosomes (Telomere-Centromere Fluorescence in situ Hybridization: TC-FISH), telomere length (Telo-FISH, qPCR), and cortisol hormone levels (Enzyme Immunoassay: EIA) in wild boar, and telomere length (qPCR) in snakes. These biological parameters were then correlated to robust calculations of radiation dose rate at the time of capture and plausible upper bound lifetime dose, both of which incorporated internal and external dose. No significant relationships were observed between dicentric chromosome frequencies or telomere length and dose rate at capture or lifetime dose (p value range: 0.20-0.97). Radiation exposure significantly associated only with cortisol, where lower concentrations were associated with higher dose rates (r² = 0.58; p < 0.0001), a relationship that was likely due to other (unmeasured) factors. Our results suggest that wild boar and snakes chronically exposed to LD-LDR radiation sufficient to prohibit human occupancy were not experiencing significant adverse health effects as assessed by biomarkers of DNA damage and stress.

Radiation dose rate to Japanese cedar and plants collected from Okuma, Fukushima Prefecture

After the 2011 Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS) accident, wild populations of animals and plants living in the evacuation zone received additional ionizing radiation of both internal and external radiation doses. Morphological abnormalities of pine and fir trees near the FDNPS were reported. In order to evaluate dose-effect relationships, it is necessary to quantify the radiation doses to trees and plants. In this study, the internal and external dose rates to Japanese cedar and plants collected at three sites in Okuma, approximately 4 km southwest of FDNPS were estimated applying the ERICA Assessment Tool. The activity concentrations of ¹³⁴Cs and ¹³⁷Cs in soils, cedar trunks, and plants were determined. The total dose rates to cedar ranged from 2.2 ± 1.2 to 6.1 ± 2.2 μGy h^-1. These rates were within the derived consideration reference levels (DCRLs) reported by ICRP 108 as 4-40 μGy h^-1 for pine trees. The highest estimate for plants was 7.1 ± 2.7 μGy h^-1, much smaller than the DCRLs reported for grasses and herbs (40-400 μGy h^-1). On average, the internal radiation dose rates to cedars at the two sites accounted for 5% and 29% of the external dose rates, respectively, while the value in another site was only 0.4% for cedar. This was attributed to differences in the crown area between the three sites. The trunk diameter of cedars shows a positive correlation with the ratio of internal to external radiation dose rates. It indicates that the total dose rate to cedars is easily estimated with the soil radiocaesium inventory and trunk diameter. The internal radiation dose rate to the plant varied depending on the plant species. This variation was considerably large in plants due to the presence of two species, including Solidago altissima and Artemisia indica var. maximowiczii.

Radiocesium concentrations and GPS-coupled dosimetry in Fukushima snakes

One of the largest releases of radioactive contamination in history occurred at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP). Although the accident happened in 2011, questions still persist regarding its ecological impacts. For example, relatively little is known about radiocesium accumulation in snakes, despite their high trophic status, limited home range sizes, and close association with soil where many radionuclides accumulate. This study presents one of the most comprehensive radioecological studies of snakes published to date using a combination of whole-body radiocesium analyses, GPS transmitters, and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dosimeters. The objectives were to: 1) quantify whole-body radiocesium activity concentrations and internal dose rates among several common species of snakes within and around the Fukushima Exclusion Zone (FEZ), 2) determine effects of species, sex, and body size on radiocesium activity concentrations, 3) measure external dose rates using GPS-coupled dosimeters deployed on free-ranging snakes, 4) compare field-derived empirical dose rates to those generated by computer simulation software (i.e., the ERICA tool), and 5) determine if incorporating snake behavior into computer models improve simulated estimates of external dose. Whole-body radiocesium levels for snakes were highly variable among individuals (16 to 25,000 Bq/kg, FW), but were influenced more by levels of local contamination than species, sex, or size. Doses recorded by OSL dosimeters on snakes, as well as modeling in ERICA, suggest that individual movements and behavior have a substantial influence on dose rates to snakes. However, dose estimates produced with ERICA were comparable to dose received by tracked snakes. The average external plus internal dose rate for snakes captured in the FEZ was 3.6-3.9 μGy/h, with external dose contributing 80% to the total. Further research regarding reptile-specific benchmark dose rates would improve risk assessment for reptiles in radiologically contaminated areas.

Baseline radioecological data for the soil and selected bioindicator organisms in the temperate forest of Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia

The aim of this study was to provide baseline radioecological data for the temperate forest ecosystem in Plitvice Lakes National Park. Emphasis was placed on the determination of naturally occurring radionuclides since there is an acknowledged lack of data for these radionuclides in non-accident conditions in wildlife, even for bioindicator organisms. Activity concentrations of ²³⁸U, ²²⁶Ra, ²¹⁰Pb, ²³²Th, ⁴⁰K, ¹³⁴Cs, and ¹³⁷Cs were measured by gamma spectrometry in soil and bioindicators: earthworms, conifer needles, mosses, and lichens. From the measured activity concentrations, concentration ratios were calculated to quantify the transfer of these radionuclides from soil to bioindicators. Our results show that soil activity concentrations are biased toward results from other studies conducted within the Dinaric mountain region. However, in moss and lichen samples, we measured higher activity concentrations of ²²⁶Ra and lower activity concentrations of ⁴⁰K and ¹³⁷Cs in comparison to similar studies. Also, we estimated lower concentration ratios for all radionuclides from soil to these organisms, except for ²¹⁰Pb, in comparison to generic values. The transfer of ²³⁸U was generally low for all of the bioindicator organisms. For conifer needles, a correlation was found between activity concentrations of ²²⁶Ra and ¹³⁷Cs in soil and related concentration ratios. Correlation was also found between the activity concentration of ⁴⁰K in soil and transfer of ⁴⁰K and ¹³⁷Cs to mosses and lichens. A comparison with literature data highlighted the lack of ²²⁶Ra related concentration ratios for conifer trees and especially for earthworms. Therefore, the results of this study could supplement the sparse data currently available on radionuclide background data in similar ecosystems and related soil-to-wildlife transfer of radionuclides. Dose rate assessments, performed by the ERICA Tool, estimated that 96% of the overall exposure of wildlife in the Park area is due to the background dose rates, while 0.06 μGy h^-1 on average can be attributed as an incremental dose rate from ¹³⁴Cs and ¹³⁷Cs.

Cloning of Hynobius lichenatus (Tohoku hynobiid salamander) p53 and analysis of its expression in response to radiation

Background

Caudata species such as salamanders are easily affected by environmental changes, which can drastically reduce their population. The effects of acute X-rays and chronic γ-irradiation on Hynobius lichenatus, the Japanese Tohoku hynobiid salamander, are known. However, the expression of radiation-inducible genes, such as the DNA-damage checkpoint response gene p53, has not been analyzed in H. lichenatus. This has not occurred because there is no established method for mRNA quantification in H. lichenatus due to a lack of information on available nucleotide sequences corresponding to both radiation-inducible genes and endogenous control genes such as ACTB (β-actin).

Results

In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effects of radiation on gene expression in H. lichenatus. Using RNA extracted from irradiated salamanders, we performed rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) and cloned H. lichenatus β-actin, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) and p53. We confirmed that the cloned cDNAs were able to synthesize salamander proteins by western blotting after transfection into cultured HEK293 cells. Proliferation assays using HEK293 cells stably expressing H. lichenatus p53 protein showed that this protein has antiproliferative effects, similar to that of mammalian p53. Furthermore, RT-qPCR analysis using gene-specific primers revealed that p53 mRNA expression in H. lichenatus was upregulated upon exposure to radiation.

Conclusion

Our results suggest that H. lichenatus p53 protein take an important role in regulating the cellular responses to various stimuli as mammalian p53 does. Furthermore, our study provides novel data to select appropriate primers to analyze internal control mRNA expression in H. lichenatus and to evaluate p53 expression as a marker of radiation and environmental stimuli.

Immobilization of Radionuclide 133Cs by Magnesium Silicate Hydrate Cement

The radionuclide cesium (Cs) was solidified using magnesium silicate hydrate (M–S–H) cement. The influence of Cs⁺ on the reaction of the M–S–H gel system was evaluated by measuring the compressive strength and microscopic properties of the solidified body. By testing the impact resistance, leaching resistance and freeze–thaw resistance of the solidified body, the immobilizing ability of Cs⁺ by the M–S–H cement was analyzed. Results indicate that Cs⁺ only slightly affects the reaction process of the M–S–H gel system, and only slows down the transformation rate of Mg(OH)₂ into the M–S–H gel to a certain extent. The M–S–H cement exhibits superior performance in solidifying Cs⁺. Both the leaching rate and cumulative leach fraction at 42 d were considerably lower than the national requirements and better than the ordinary Portland cement-solidified body. The curing effect of the M–S–H cement on Cs⁺ is mainly physical encapsulation and chemisorption of hydration products.

Environmental radiological risk assessment of a coal ash and slag disposal site with the use of the ERICA Tool

The aim of this study was to assess the environmental radiological risk of coal ash and slag to terrestrial wildlife. The research site used in this study was a disposal site of coal ash and slag with enhaced content of uranium decay chain radionuclides. With the use of the ERICA Tool, total dose rates to wildlife and risk of resultant radiobiological effects were estimated. As input data for the assessment, experimental activity concentrations of ²³⁸U, ²²⁶Ra and ²¹⁰Pb in coal ash and slag and best estimates of activity concentrations for related daughter radionuclides and ²³⁵U decay chain were used. Where possible, the experimental data for activity concentrations of ²³⁸U, ²²⁶Ra and ²¹⁰Pb in plants and related concentration ratios were used. Results were compared to background dose rates, also estimated by the Tool. The Tool's assessment data indicated internal exposure as the prevalent exposure pathway with ²²⁶Ra and ²¹⁰Po as the main dose contributors. Also, the contribution of ²³⁵U decay chain to the total dose rate was not negligible since for some organisms it represented up to 11% of the total dose rate. The risk of an occurrence of radiobiological effects in plants on the coal ash and slag disposal site can be considered negligible since the estimated total dose rates were below the screening dose of 10 μGyh^-1 and near the dose rates estimated for plants in the control area. However, the estimated dose rates for reference animals and Lichen & Bryophytes were above the screening dose rate for most organisms and on average 13 times higher than the estimated background dose rates. At the given dose rates, an occurrence of different radiobiological effects could not be excluded for animals in close contact with coal ash and slag such as earthworms and small burrowing mammals. A separate assessment performed on an example of reference plants showed that the use of activity concentrations in organisms as input data can result in an order of magnitude smaller estimates of dose rates in comparison to activity concentration in coal and ash as input data. Our study highlighted the need for experimental data in radiological risk assessments to mitigate the conservatism of the ERICA Tool and its tendency to overestimate dose rates.

Dose rate estimation of freshwater wildlife inhabiting irrigation ponds in the exclusion zone of the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident

To assess the risks of ionising radiation to freshwater environments in the exclusion zone of the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, the absorbed dose rates to aquatic organisms possibly inhabiting the irrigation ponds were estimated using the ERICA Assessment Tool from ¹³⁴Cs and ¹³⁷Cs radioactivity monitoring data for the period 2013 to 2017. In each year, the total dose rates to benthic organisms were in the same or higher levels compared with those to pelagic organisms. Among pelagic organisms, the total dose rates to amphibians, birds, and pelagic fish were two orders of magnitude higher than those to plankton. The total dose rates to insect larvae, which attained a maximum of 130 μGy h^-1, were higher than those to the other benthic organisms. The dose rates to benthic organisms increased from 2013 to 2015 and remained constant thereafter. In 50-93% of ponds, the dose rates to at least one taxon of freshwater organism, all of which were benthic organisms, exceeded the ERICA screening level (10 μGy h^-1). Comparison of the estimated dose rates with the ICRP's derived consideration reference levels (DCRLs) suggests that radioactive contamination was not likely to damage amphibians, birds, pelagic fish, benthic fish, crustaceans, and insect larvae inhabiting most of the irrigation ponds in the exclusion zone. However, this comparison also suggests that there was some chance of deleterious effects occurring to birds and benthic fish in a limited number of the most severely contaminated irrigation ponds.

Effects of chronic γ-irradiation on growth and sexual maturation of the Tohoku hynobiid salamander, Hynobius lichenatus

There are still considerable gaps in knowledge regarding the biological effects of chronic ionising radiation exposure in amphibians. To fill these gaps, Tohoku hynobiid salamanders, Hynobius lichenatus (Amphibia, Caudata), were chronically irradiated with ¹³⁷Cs γ-rays from embryonic to adult stages over 1954 days, and the effects on their growth and sexual maturation were examined under laboratory conditions. Irradiation at a dose rate of 33 μGy h^-1 had some stimulatory effects on growth (body weight increase) of H. lichenatus, while growth was temporarily or permanently suppressed at 150 or 510 μGy h^-1, respectively. On day 1802, secondary sexual characteristics (a tubercle at the anterior angle of the cloacal vent for males and ovisac development for females) were observed in 91% of the salamanders irradiated at 33 μGy h^-1, and in a similar percentage of non-irradiated controls. At 150 and 510 μGy h^-1, secondary sexual characteristics were not observed in any individuals. These results suggest that the derived consideration reference level (DCRL) of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) for Reference Frog, i.e. 40-400 μGy h^-1, is applicable for the protection of H. lichenatus, and that growth and sexual maturation of this salamander may not have been adversely affected even in the most severely contaminated area in Fukushima, where the highest dose rate to salamanders was estimated to be 50 μGy h^-1. However, observations in the contaminated area are required to confirm this conclusion, considering the possible confounding factors which may make this salamander more sensitive to radiation in the natural environment than under laboratory conditions.

Carotenoid distribution in wild Japanese tree frogs (Hyla japonica) exposed to ionizing radiation in Fukushima

The nuclear accident in the Fukushima prefecture released a large amount of artificial radionuclides that might have short- and long-term biological effects on wildlife. Ionizing radiation can be a harmful source of reactive oxygen species, and previous studies have already shown reduced fitness effects in exposed animals in Chernobyl. Due to their potential health benefits, carotenoid pigments might be used by animals to limit detrimental effects of ionizing radiation exposure. Here, we examined concentrations of carotenoids in blood (i.e. a snapshot of levels in circulation), liver (endogenous carotenoid reserves), and the vocal sac skin (sexual signal) in relation to the total radiation dose rates absorbed by individual (TDR from 0.2 to 34 µGy/h) Japanese tree frogs (Hyla japonica). We found high within-site variability of TDRs, but no significant effects of the TDR on tissue carotenoid levels, suggesting that carotenoid distribution in amphibians might be less sensitive to ionizing radiation exposure than in other organisms or that the potential deleterious effects of radiation exposure might be less significant or more difficult to detect in Fukushima than in Chernobyl due to, among other things, differences in the abundance and mixture of each radionuclide.

Selecting passive dosimetry technologies for measuring the external dose of terrestrial wildlife

Dosimeters attached to wild animals can be used to validate regulatory assessment approaches and models for estimating radiation exposure of wild animals. Such measurements are also necessary to ensure that robust dose-effect relationships can be developed from the results of field research programmes. This paper presents the first comprehensive evaluation of the different dosimetry technologies available for specifically measuring the external exposure of wildlife. Guidance is provided on the selection of appropriate passive dosimetry approaches for directly measuring external exposure of terrestrial wildlife under field conditions. The characteristics and performance of four available dosimetry technologies (thermoluminescent dosimeter (TLD), optically stimulated luminescent dosimeter (OSLD), radiophotoluminescent dosimeter (RPLD) and direct ion storage, (DIS)) are reviewed. Dosimeter properties, detection limit and dose range, study organisms and the intended application are variables that need to be considered when selecting a suitable dosimetry technology. Evaluated against these criteria, it is suggested that LiF based and Al₂O₃:C TLDs, OSLD and RPLD could all be used to estimate doses to wildlife. However, only LiF based TLDs have been used to directly measure wildlife doses in field studies to date. DIS is only suitable for comparatively large species (e.g. medium to large mammals), but has the advantage that temporal variation in dose can be recorded. In all cases, dosimeter calibration is required to ensure that the dose measurements reported can be interpreted appropriately for the organisms of interest.

Dose assessment in environmental radiological protection: State of the art and perspectives

Exposure to radiation is a potential hazard to humans and the environment. The Fukushima accident reminded the world of the importance of a reliable risk management system that incorporates the dose received from radiation exposures. The dose to humans from exposure to radiation can be quantified using a well-defined system; its environmental equivalent, however, is still in a developmental state. Additionally, the results of several papers published over the last decade have been criticized because of poor dosimetry. Therefore, a workshop on environmental dosimetry was organized by the STAR (Strategy for Allied Radioecology) Network of Excellence to review the state of the art in environmental dosimetry and prioritize areas of methodological and guidance development. Herein, we report the key findings from that international workshop, summarise parameters that affect the dose animals and plants receive when exposed to radiation, and identify further research needs. Current dosimetry practices for determining environmental protection are based on simple screening dose assessments using knowledge of fundamental radiation physics, source-target geometry relationships, the influence of organism shape and size, and knowledge of how radionuclide distributions in the body and in the soil profile alter dose. In screening model calculations that estimate whole-body dose to biota the shapes of organisms are simply represented as ellipsoids, while recently developed complex voxel phantom models allow organ-specific dose estimates. We identified several research and guidance development priorities for dosimetry. For external exposures, the uncertainty in dose estimates due to spatially heterogeneous distributions of radionuclide contamination is currently being evaluated. Guidance is needed on the level of dosimetry that is required when screening benchmarks are exceeded and how to report exposure in dose-effect studies, including quantification of uncertainties. Further research is needed to establish whether and how dosimetry should account for differences in tissue physiology, organism life stages, seasonal variability (in ecology, physiology and radiation field), species life span, and the proportion of a population that is actually exposed. We contend that, although major advances have recently been made in environmental radiation protection, substantive improvements are required to reduce uncertainties and increase the reliability of environmental dosimetry.

Application of a γRS index-based method and techno-economic analysis for in situ treatment of 137Cs-contaminated soils by cement-barite based stabilisation/solidification

This paper examines the application of cement (C)-barite (Ba) based-Stabilisation/Solidification (S/S) for the remediation of ¹³⁷Cs-contaminated soils, investigating the influence of soil: grout and C: Ba ratios on the shielding performance of the S/S mix assessed as gamma radiation shielding (γRS) index variation. Results from experiments were used to perform a novel approach and an economic analysis in order to calculate the effective dose reduction achievable by S/S and to assess the optimum quantities and costs of selected mixes, respectively. Gamma ray spectrometer measurements indicate that γRS index increases with increasing barite percentage up to a maximum level of 50%; however a further increase results in a worsening of the shielding performances. A maximum γRS variation of 46.5% was recorded with grout percentage increasing from 16.6 to 50%. At the photon energy of 662 keV (¹³⁷Cs), the maximum grout amount results in the possibility to shield up to 24.1% of γ-rays emitted. The effective dose reduction achievable by the investigated S/S allows a maximum ¹³⁷Cs-soil contamination in the range 2.94-14.55 kBq kg^-1 successfully treatable employing a soil: grout ratio of 1: 1 (C: Ba = 1:1). Technical data, jointly with economic analysis findings, make cement-barite based-S/S very competitive in cost-effectiveness and could provide a basis for decision-making of ¹³⁷Cs-contaminated site remediation.

Radiocaesium contamination and dose rate estimation of terrestrial and freshwater wildlife in the exclusion zone of the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident

To characterise the radioactive contamination of terrestrial and freshwater wildlife caused by the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, biological samples, namely, fungi, mosses, plants, amphibians, reptiles, insects, molluscs, and earthworms, were collected mainly from the forests of the exclusion zone in the Fukushima Prefecture from 2011 to 2012. Caesium-134 and ¹³⁷Cs were detected by gamma spectrometry in almost all the samples. Fungi, ferns, and mosses accumulated high amounts of radiocaesium, as they did in Chernobyl, with ¹³⁴Cs + ¹³⁷Cs activity concentrations of 10⁴-10⁶ Bq kg^-1 fresh mass (FM). Earthworms, amphibians, and the soft tissue of the garden snail Acusta despecta sieboldiana, also had levels as high as 10⁴-10⁵ Bq kg^-1 FM of ¹³⁴Cs + ¹³⁷Cs. Most of the estimated total (internal + external) dose rates to herbaceous plants, amphibians, insects, and earthworms were below the corresponding derived consideration reference levels (DCRLs) recommended by the ICRP. This suggests that, in most cases, there was little chance of deleterious effects of ionising radiation on these organisms in the exclusion zone for the first year after the accident, though the dose rates were underestimated mainly due to the lack of consideration of short-lived radionuclides.

On the divergences in assessment of environmental impacts from ionising radiation following the Fukushima accident

The accident at the Fukushima-Daiichi Nuclear Power Station on March 11, 2011, led to significant contamination of the surrounding terrestrial and marine environments. Whilst impacts on human health remain the primary concern in the aftermath of such an accident, recent years have seen a significant body of work conducted on the assessment of the accident's impacts on both the terrestrial and marine environment. Such assessments have been undertaken at various levels of biological organisation, for different species, using different methodologies and coming, in many cases, to divergent conclusions as to the effects of the accident on the environment. This article provides an overview of the work conducted in relation to the environmental impacts of the Fukushima accident, critically comparing and contrasting methodologies and results with a view towards finding reasons for discrepancies, should they indeed exist. Based on the outcomes of studies conducted to date, it would appear that in order to avoid the fractured and disparate conclusions drawn in the aftermath of previous accidents, radioactive contaminants and their effects can no longer simply be viewed in isolation with respect to the ecosystems these effects may impact. A combination of laboratory based and field studies with a focus on ecosystem functioning and effects could offer the best opportunities for coherence in the interpretation of the results of studies into the environmental impacts of ionising radiation.

Stabilisation/solidification of 137Cs-contaminated soils using novel high-density grouts: γ-ray shielding properties, contaminant immobilisation and a γRS index-based approach for in situ applicability

In this work, γ-ray shielding and Cs immobilisation performances of high-density magnetite (MG) and iron powder (IP) in Portland cement (PC) based-S/S treatment were investigated. Experimental results were elaborated using a γ-radiation shielding (γRS) index-based approach for assessing the effectiveness of in situ S/S of ¹³⁷Cs-contaminated soils. Main results reveal that the replacement of PC by MG or IP (up to 50%) leads to a marked increase (up to about 4-fold) in the γ-ray shielding performance, whereas a further material addition decreases the S/S shielding performance. The highest γRS index of ∼26% (662 keV) was found in the case of IP addition (33.3%). The use of MG-mixes allows reaching slightly slower γRS index jointly with the highest Cs-immobilisation of 97.8%. In this case, calculation shows a maximum ¹³⁷Cs-contamination level successfully treatable by in situ S/S up to ∼2.9 or ∼14.5 kBq kg^-1 for the realistic or low probability scenario, respectively, highlighting the possibility to remediate a very wide range of real contamination. Findings show MG - PC S/S as the best choice and could provide a basis for decision-making of S/S remediation of ¹³⁷Cs-contaminated sites.

A new version of the ERICA tool to facilitate impact assessments of radioactivity on wild plants and animals

A new version of the ERICA Tool (version 1.2) was released in November 2014; this constitutes the first major update of the Tool since release in 2007. The key features of the update are presented in this article. Of particular note are new transfer databases extracted from an international compilation of concentration ratios (CRwo-media) and the modification of 'extrapolation' approaches used to select transfer data in cases where information is not available. Bayesian updating approaches have been used in some cases to draw on relevant information that would otherwise have been excluded in the process of deriving CRwo-media statistics. All of these efforts have in turn led to the requirement to update Environmental Media Concentration Limits (EMCLs) used in Tier 1 assessments. Some of the significant changes with regard to EMCLs are highlighted.
