Drought can offset potential water use efficiency of forest ecosystems from rising atmospheric CO2

Divergent impacts of VPD and SWC on ecosystem carbon-water coupling under different dryness conditions

Ecosystem water use efficiency (WUE) is an indicator of carbon-water interactions and is defined as the ratio of gross primary productivity (GPP) to evapotranspiration (ET). However, it is currently unclear how WUE responds to atmospheric and soil drought events in terrestrial ecosystems with different dryness conditions. Additionally, the contributions of GPP and ET to the WUE response remain poorly understood. Based on measurements from 26 flux tower sites distributed worldwide, the binning method and random forest model were employed to separate the sensitivities of daily ecosystem WUE, GPP, and ET to vapor pressure deficit (VPD) and soil water content (SWC) under different dryness conditions (dryness index = potential evapotranspiration/precipitation, DI). Results showed that the sensitivity of WUE to VPD was negative at humid sites (DI < 1), while the sensitivity of WUE to SWC was positive at arid sites (DI > 2). Furthermore, the contribution of GPP to VPD-induced WUE variability was 63 % at humid sites, and the contribution of ET to SWC-induced WUE variability was 68 % when SWC was less than the 60th percentile at arid sites. Consequently, one increasing VPD-induced decrease in GPP was generally linked to a decrease in WUE at humid sites, and one drying soil moisture-caused decrease in ET was linked to a WUE increase under low SWC conditions at arid sites. Finally, VPD had a stronger effect on WUE than SWC when VPD was less than the 90th percentile or SWC was greater than the 50th percentile. Our findings underscore the importance of considering ecosystem dryness when investigating the impacts of VPD and SWC on ecosystem carbon-water coupling.

Improved estimation of global gross primary productivity during 1981-2020 using the optimized P model

Accurate estimation of terrestrial gross primary productivity (GPP) is essential for quantifying the net carbon exchange between the atmosphere and biosphere. Light use efficiency (LUE) models are widely used to estimate GPP at different spatial scales. However, difficulties in proper determination of maximum LUE (LUE_max) and downregulation of LUE_max into actual LUE result in uncertainties in GPP estimated by LUE models. The recently developed P model, as a LUE-like model, captures the deep mechanism of photosynthesis and simplifies parameterization. Site level studies have proved the outperformance of P model over LUE models. However, the global application of the P model is still lacking. Thus, the effectiveness of 5 water stress factors integrated into the P model was compared. The optimal P model was used to generate a new long-term (1981-2020) global monthly GPP dataset at a spatial resolution of 0.1° × 0.1°, called PGPP. Validation at globally distributed 109 FLUXNET sites indicated that PGPP is better than three widely-used GPP products. R² between PGPP and observed GPP equals to 0.75, the corresponding root mean squared error (RMSE) and mean absolute error (MAE) equal to 1.77 g C m^-2 d^-1 and 1.28 g C m^-2 d^-1. During the period from 1981 to 2020, PGPP significantly increased in 69.02% of global vegetated regions (p < 0.05). Overall, PGPP provides a new GPP product choice for global ecology studies and the comparison of various water stress factors provides a new idea for the improvement of GPP model in the future.

Light and Water Conditions Co-Regulated Stomata and Leaf Relative Uptake Rate (LRU) during Photosynthesis and COS Assimilation: A Meta-Analysis

As a trace gas involved in hydration during plant photosynthesis, carbonyl sulfide (COS) and its leaf relative uptake rate (LRU) is used to reduce the uncertainties in simulations of gross primary productivity (GPP). In this study, 101 independent observations were collected from 22 studies. We extracted the LRU, stomatal conductance (gs), canopy COS and carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes, and relevant environmental conditions (i.e., light, temperature, and humidity), as well as the atmospheric COS and CO2 concentrations (Ca,COS and Ca,CO2). Although no evidence was found showing that gs regulates LRU, they responded in opposite ways to diurnal variations of environmental conditions in both mixed forests (LRU: Hedges’d = −0.901, LnRR = −0.189; gs: Hedges’d = 0.785, LnRR = 0.739) and croplands dominated by C3 plants (Hedges’d = −0.491, LnRR = −0.371; gs: Hedges’d = 1.066, LnRR = 0.322). In this process, the stomata play an important role in COS assimilation (R2 = 0.340, p = 0.020) and further influence the interrelationship of COS and CO2 fluxes (R2 = 0.650, p = 0.000). Slight increases in light intensity (R2 = 1, p = 0.002) and atmospheric drought (R2 = 0.885, p = 0.005) also decreased the LRU. The LRU saturation points of Ca,COS and Ca,CO2 were observed when ΔCa,COS ≈ 13 ppt (R2 = 0.580, p = 0.050) or ΔCa,CO2 ≈ −18 ppm (R2 = 0.970, p = 0.003). This study concluded that during plant photosynthesis and COS assimilation, light and water conditions co-regulated the stomata and LRU.

Ecosystem Water Use Efficiency in the Three-North Region of China Based on Long-Term Satellite Data

Water use efficiency (WUE), given by the ratio between organic matter production and water consumption, could be considered as a very important ecological indicator for assessing vegetation system growth conditions by combining organic matter production and water consumption. It is especially important for regional vegetation sustainable management by creating enough organic matter with restricted water supply. Furthermore, proper analysis of WUE is vital for the evaluation and future plans of ecological restoration projects in ecologically fragile regions such as the Three-North region of China. In this study, ecosystem WUE across the Three-North region of China from 2001 to 2017 was obtained, and the variation trends and major influencing factors were also analyzed. The results demonstrated that (1) the average WUE across the Three-North region of China is 0.7376 g∙C∙m−2∙mm−1 with an annual increase of 0.002 g∙C∙m−2∙mm−1∙y−1; (2) the spatiotemporal variation trends of WUE are similar to those of gross primary production (GPP); and (3) in the southeastern parts of the Three-North region, the vegetation conditions are better with sustainable improvements, while in Xinjiang Province, the sustainable degradation areas are widely spread. The results of this research reveal large spatial heterogeneity of WUE, with high WUE mainly in the southeastern region with sufficient precipitation and afforestation programs. For those areas far away from this region, WUE is not satisfactory, suggesting that, for a sustainable vegetation growth, it is important to consider the water supply to maintain suitable vegetation cover. Furthermore, the results of this research are important for future ecological restoration and sustainable management of environment.

Impact of Recent Climate Change on Water-Use Efficiency Strategies of Larix sibirica in the Altai-Sayan Mountain Range

A strong increase in the mean annual air temperature during the past 50 years by up to 0.54 °C was recorded in the Altai region (45°–52° N; 84°–99° E) compared to the global value of 0.07 °C over the period 1901–2008. The impact of the climatic changes on the hydrology are complex in these mountainous forest ecosystems and not fully understood. We aim to reveal differences in the intrinsic water-use efficiencies (iWUE) strategy by larch (Larix sibirica Ledeb.) derived from stable carbon isotopes at contrasting sites, ranging from the steppe (Ersin, Chadan) to high-elevation (Mongun, Koksu) sites of the Altai over the past century. The iWUE trends increased rapidly for all study sites except Chadan, where a decreasing trend after 2010 has been observed. This decline can be related to increased amount of precipitation compared to increased drought at the other sites. In general, the iWUE is increased up to 14% (1985–2019 compared to 1919–1984), which is lower compared to other studies across the globe likely due to harsh climatic conditions. Vapor pressure deficit and maximal air temperature are impacting Siberian larch significantly and affecting their iWUE differently at the high-elevated and steppe sites of the Altai over the past century.
