Tensile properties of two-dimensional carbon fiber reinforced silicon carbide composites at temperatures up to 2300 °C

Enhancing the Fire Resistance of Ablative Materials: Role of the Polymeric Matrix and Silicon Carbide Reinforcement

The primary characteristic of ablative materials is their fire resistance. This study explored the development of cost-effective ablative materials formed into application-specific shapes by using a polymer matrix reinforced with ceramic powder. A thermoplastic (polypropylene; PP) and a thermoset (polyester; UPE) matrix were used to manufacture ablative materials with 50 wt% silicon carbide (SiC) particles. The reference composites (50 wt% SiC) were compared to those with 1 and 3 wt% short glass fibers (0.5 mm length) and to composites using a 1 and 3 wt% glass fiber mesh. Fire resistance was tested using a butane flame (900 °C) and by measuring the transmitted heat with a thermocouple. Results showed that the type of polymer matrix (PP or UPE) did not influence fire resistance. Composites with short glass fibers had a fire-resistance time of 100 s, while those with glass fiber mesh tripled this resistance time. The novelty of this work lies in the exploration of a specific type of material with unique percentages of SiC not previously studied. The aim is to develop a low-cost coating for industrial warehouses that has improved fire-protective properties, maintains lower temperatures, and enhances the wear and impact resistance.

High-temperature tensile strength of C/SiC composite under laser-induced high heating flux in an aerobic environment

Based on the advantages of laser high brightness, a high-temperature mechanical property measuring device has been developed, which can measure the high-temperature strength of C/SiC composites under the condition of short-term high-temperature rise rate and solve the problem of over-oxidation of materials in conventional high-temperature mechanical properties experiments. The experimental results show that the maximum temperature rise rate is 260 ℃/s at the initial heating stage, and the test time is controlled within 35 s. The tensile strength of the prepared C/SiC composites decreased first and then increased at high temperatures and laser-induced high temperatures. The experimental results are similar to those in the literature under the inert atmosphere. Oxidation has less of an effect on the mechanical characteristics of materials under conditions of rapid temperature rise. The system can be used to test the mechanical properties of composite materials at high temperatures and as a simulation platform for the thermal response of specific thermal protection systems subjected to a constant heat flux. This study can provide a new idea for testing ultra-high temperature mechanical properties of C/SiC materials and provide key technical support for the engineering application and high-temperature testing of C/SiC materials in high-temperature environments.

Temperature Resistance Properties of Unidirectional Laminated Cf/SiC-Al Prepared by PIP and Vacuum Pressure Infiltration

Material used for aero-engine fan blade requires excellent mechanical properties at high temperature (300 °C). Continuous carbon-fiber-reinforced silicon carbide ceramic matrix composites (Cf/SiC) are necessary candidates in this field, possessing low density, high strength, high modulus, and excellent high-temperature resistance. However, during the preparation process of Cf/SiC, there were inevitably residual pores and defects inside, resulting in insufficient compressive strength and reliability. The vacuum pressure melting infiltration process was used to infiltrate low melting point and high wettability aluminum alloys into the porous Cf/SiC composite material prepared by the precursor impregnation cracking process, repairing the residual pore defects inside the body. The porosity of porous Cf/SiC decreased from 49.65% to 5.1% after aluminum alloy repair and strengthening. The mechanical properties of Cf/SiC-Al composite materials strengthened by aluminum alloy repair after heat treatment were studied. The tensile strength of the as-prepared Cf/SiC-Al was 166 ± 10 MPa, which were degraded by 13~22% after heat treatment. The nonlinear sections of stress-displacement curve of as-treated samples were shorter than that of as-prepared sample. The hardness of aluminum alloy matrix after 300 °C 1 h heat treatment was 58 Hv, which was not obviously reduced compared with the sample without heat treatment. The vacuum infiltration of aluminum alloy is expected to have guiding significance for repairing and strengthening internal defects in ceramic matrix composites.

Experimental Study on High-Speed Milling of SiCf/SiC Composites with PCD and CVD Diamond Tools

Silicon carbide fiber reinforced silicon carbide ceramic matrix composite (SiCf/SiC composite) is characterized by a high strength-to-density ratio, high hardness, and high temperature resistance. However, due to the brittleness of the matrix material and the anisotropy of the reinforcing phase, it is a huge challenge for machining of the material. The milling method has advantages of a high material removal rate and applicability to complex surface geometry. However, no published literature on milling of SiCf/SiC composite has been found up to now. In this paper, high-speed milling of SiCf/SiC composites was carried out under dry conditions and cryogenic cooling using liquid nitrogen, respectively. Polycrystalline diamond (PCD) and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamond cutting tools were used for the milling work. The cutting performance of the two kinds of tools in high-speed milling of SiCf/SiC composites was studied. Tool failure modes and mechanisms were analyzed. The effects of the cooling approach on tool wear and machined surface quality were also investigated. The experimental results showed that under identical cutting parameters and cooling approaches, the PCD tool yielded better cutting performance in terms of a longer tool life and better surface quality than that of the CVD diamond tool. In dry machining, the failure modes of the CVD diamond tool were a large area of spalling on the rake face, edge chipping and severe tool nose fracture, whereas for the PCD tool, only a small area of spalling around the tool nose took place. Compared to the dry machining, the wear magnitudes of both PCD and CVD diamond tools were decreased in cryogenic machining. Additionally, the surface quality also showed significant improvements. This study indicates that the PCD tool is highly suitable for machining of SiCf/SiC composite, and that the cryogenic method can improve machining efficiency and surface quality.
