Glycine can prevent and fight virus invasiveness by reinforcing the extracellular matrix

Identification of nutritional characteristics of Haliotis discus hannai in different China sea areas and health risks of heavy metal accumulation

BACKGROUND

The nutritional compositions of abalones (Haliotis discus hannai) vary with geographical origins and environmental factors. Traceability is an important part of food safety, and the heavy metals in the aquatic environment pose a threat to living organisms. Therefore, we present a comparative analysis of the nutrient and heavy metal content in abalones from three different sea areas in China: the Bohai Sea, East China Sea, and South China Sea. This study uniquely addresses the correlation between nutrient composition and heavy metal accumulation. By employing weighted gene co-expression network analysis, we reveal the biological implications of heavy metal exposure, specifically focusing on chromium, copper (Cu), manganese, zinc, arsenic (As), cadmium, and lead.

RESULTS

Betaine, glycine, and glycogen appeared in three comparisons. The abalone in the East China Sea had the highest content of betaine, and the abalone in the South China Sea had the highest contents of glycine and glycogen. Among the measured metals, the heavy metals accumulated in the viscera were significantly higher than that in the muscle, except Cu, and As showed a high target hazard quotient and carcinogenic risk.

CONCLUSION

Betaine, glycine, and glycogen might be important indicators for origin traceability of abalone. Abalones from the South China Sea provide higher nutritional value. Cu had different accumulation patterns and As showed high health risks, and heavy metals brought oxidative stress to abalone. Our findings not only contribute to the understanding of abalone safety and quality but also provide a novel approach to assessing impact of heavy metals on marine food sources. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.

Systemic perturbations in amino acids/amino acid derivatives and tryptophan pathway metabolites associated with murine influenza A virus infection

BACKGROUND

Influenza A virus (IAV) is the only influenza virus causing flu pandemics (i.e., global epidemics of flu disease). Influenza (the flu) is a highly contagious disease that can be deadly, especially in high-risk groups. Worldwide, these annual epidemics are estimated to result in about 3 to 5 million cases of severe illness and in about 290,000 to 650,000 respiratory deaths. We intend to reveal the effect of IAV infection on the host's metabolism, immune response, and neurotoxicity by using a mouse IAV infection model.

METHODS

51 metabolites of murine blood plasma (33 amino acids/amino acid derivatives (AADs) and 18 metabolites of the tryptophan pathway) were analyzed by using Ultra-High-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry with Electrospray Ionization at the acute (7 days post-infection (dpi)), resolution (14 dpi), and recovery (21 dpi) stages of the virus infection in comparison with controls.

RESULTS

Among the 33 biogenic amino acids/AADs, the levels of five amino acids/AADs (1-methylhistidine, 5-oxoproline, α-aminobutyric acid, glutamine, and taurine) increased by 7 dpi, whereas the levels of ten amino acids/AADs (4-hydroxyproline, alanine, arginine, asparagine, cysteine, citrulline, glycine, methionine, proline, and tyrosine) decreased. By 14 dpi, the levels of one AAD (3-methylhistidine) increased, whereas the levels of five amino acids/AADs (α-aminobutyric acid, aminoadipic acid, methionine, threonine, valine) decreased. Among the 18 metabolites from the tryptophan pathway, the levels of kynurenine, quinolinic acid, hydroxykynurenine increased by 7 dpi, whereas the levels of indole-3-acetic acid and nicotinamide riboside decreased.

CONCLUSIONS

Our data may facilitate understanding the molecular mechanisms of host responses to IAV infection and provide a basis for discovering potential new mechanistic, diagnostic, and prognostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets for IAV infection.

Control analysis of collagen synthesis by glycine, proline and lysine in bovine chondrocytes in vitro - Its relevance for medicine and nutrition

Collagen synthesis is severely diminished in osteoarthritis; thus, enhancing it may help the regeneration of cartilage. Collagen synthesis is submitted to a large procollagen cycle where the greater part of the newly synthesized protein is degraded inside the cell producing a huge waste of material and energy. We have applied the Metabolic Control Analysis approach to study the control of collagen synthesis flux by means of the response coefficients of the flux with respect to glycine, proline and lysine. Our results show that the main cause of the procollagen cycle is a protein misfolding mainly due to glycine scarcity, as well as a moderate deficiency of proline and lysine for collagen synthesis. Thus, increasing these amino acids in the diet (especially glycine) may well be a strategy for helping cartilage regeneration by enhancing collagen synthesis and reducing its huge waste in the procollagen cycle; this possibly contributes to the treatment and prevention of osteoarthritis.

Effect of Different Collagen on Anterior Cruciate Ligament Transection and Medial Meniscectomy-Induced Osteoarthritis Male Rats

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common type of arthritis characterized by degeneration of the articular cartilage and joint dysfunction. Various pharmacological and non-pharmacological techniques have been used to manage these diseases. Due to the diverse therapeutic properties of marine collagen, it has received considerable attention in its pharmacological application. Thus, the purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of jellyfish collagen, collagen peptide, other sources of marine collagen, and glycine in treating OA. In the OA rat model, an anterior cruciate ligament transection combined with medial meniscectomy surgery (ACLT + MMx) was used to induce osteoarthritis in rats. Two weeks before surgery, male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a chow-fat diet. After 6 weeks of treatment with collagen, collagen peptide, and glycine, the results show that they could inhibit the production of proinflammatory cytokines and their derivatives, such as COX-2, MMP-13, and CTX-II levels; therefore, it can attenuate cartilage degradation. Moreover, collagen peptides can promote the synthesis of collagen type II in cartilage. These results demonstrate that collagen and glycine have been shown to have protective properties against OA cartilage degradation. In contrast, collagen peptides have been shown to show cartilage regeneration but less protective properties. Jellyfish collagen peptide at a dose of 5 mg/kg b. w. has the most significant potential for treating OA because it protects and regenerates cartilage in the knee.

Adenosine and L-proline can possibly hinder Chinese Sacbrood virus infection in honey bees via immune modulation

Sacbrood virus (SBV) infects larvae of honey bees, resulting in infected larvae becoming fluid-filled sacs. Our previous studies showed that the extract of herbal medicine, Radix Isatidis, could inhibit Chinese SBV (CSBV) infection in Asian honey bees (Apis cerana). Here, two compounds, adenosine and L-proline, which were previously reported to be associated with immune modulation, were identified in R. Isatidis extract and then selected for an evaluation of their antiviral effect on CSBV infection in A. cerana. Our results revealed that both adenosine and L-proline could significantly mitigate the impact of CSBV on the growth and development of infected larvae and modulate hosts' immune responses by downregulating the expression of immune genes in infected larvae. The results gained from this study suggest that adenosine and L-proline could possibly interfere CSBV infection via immune modulation to avoid exacerbations and nonspecific damage to infected larvae's own tissues.
