Abstract
Peach, apricot, chokeberry, blueberry, cranberry, raspberry, and wild strawberry fruits were used to create a polyphenolic preparation (PP) after enzyme-assisted extraction, ultrafiltration, and concentration. The composition of PP was determined using LC-MS. Gelatin jellies produced with PP, as well as liquid PP, were "digested" in an in vitro model. The entrapment of PP in the gelatin matrix delayed the release of total polyphenolics, flavonoids, flavanols, condensed tannins, and anthocyanins (predominantly during the "small intestinal" phase). PP entrapped in the jelly more effectively (p < 0.05) decreased the activity of acetylcholinesterase, butyrylcholinesterase, cyclooxygenase-2 and catalase (during the "small intestinal" phase). However, no significant (p < 0.05) effects on superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione reductase activities were observed. FRAP, CUPRAC, HORAC, oxidation of linoleic acid, and ABTS-reducing activities were higher during the "intestinal" phase; however, the DPPH test and β-carotene bleaching tests did not confirm these results. The presented findings may be useful for designing nutraceuticals with programmed release of bioactive compounds during digestion.

Abstract
The aerial parts of Epilobium angustifolium L. (fireweed) (Onagraceae) are renowned for their use in the treatment of prostatic, kidney and urinary tract diseases, and skin infections. In this work, a comprehensive phytochemical profiling of the methanol-aqueous extract from E. anfustifolium aerial parts was performed by the means of liquid chromatography-Orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometry. Annotation and dereplication of 121 secondary metabolites were achieved, including acylquinic acids, gallo- and ellagitannins, flavonoids, phenolic acids, and their glycosides. Forty-six compounds are reported for the first time in the species. Total phenolic and flavonoid content were 85.04 ± 0.18 mg GAE/g and 27.71 ± 0.74 mg QE/g, respectively. Antioxidant capacity assessment revealed that the extract actively scavenged DPPH and ABTS radicals (310.74 and 466.82 mg TE/g) along with a high reducing power in CUPRAC and FRAP assay (442.83 and 291.50 mg TE/g), respectively, and metal chelating (48.20 mg EDTA/g). The extract also had a distinct impact on α-glucosidase (3.48 mmol ACAE/g) and moderate activity towards α-amylase (0.44 mmol ACAE/g) and lipase (8.03 OE/g). It inhibited acetyl- and butyrylcholinesterase (2.05 and 1.67 mg GALE/g) and had a prominent anti-tyrosinase effect (61.91 mg KA/g). Our results contribute to establishing fireweed as a multifunctional agent for use in herbal preparations.

Abstract
In the area of research on neurodegenerative diseases, the current challenge is to search for appropriate research methods that would detect these diseases at the earliest possible stage, but also new active structures that would reduce the rate of the disease progression and minimize the intensity of their symptoms experienced by the patient. The chalcones are considered in the context of candidates for new drugs dedicated to the fight against neurodegenerative diseases. The synthesis of bis-chalcone derivatives (3a-3d), as aim molecules was performed. Their structures were established by applying 1H NMR, 13C NMR, MS, FT-IR and UV-Vis spectra. All bis-chalcones were synthesized from terephthalaldehyde and appropriate aromatic ketone as substrates in the Claisen-Schmidt condensation method and evaluated in the biological tests and in silico analysis. Compounds exerted antioxidant activity using the HORAC method (3a-3d) and decreased the activities of GPx, COX-2 (3b-3d), GR (3a-3c) and CAT (3a,3b). The high anti-neurodegenerative potential of all four bis-chalcones was observed by inhibition of acetyl- (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) and a positive effect on the mouse hippocampal neuronal HT-22 cell line (LDH release and PGC-1α, PPARγ and GAPDH protein expression). TD-DFT method (computing a number of descriptors associated with HOMO-LUMO electron transition: electronegativity, chemical hardness and potential, first ionization potential, electron affinity) was employed to study the spectroscopic properties. This method showed that the first excited state of compounds was consistent with their maximum absorption in the computed UV-Vis spectra, which showed good agreement with the experimental spectrum using PBE1PBE functional. Using in silico approach, interactions of bis-chalcones with selected targets (aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) PAS-A Domain, ligand binding domain of human PPAR-γ, soman-aged human BChE-butyrylthiocholine complex, Torpedo californica AChE:N-piperidinopropyl-galanthamine complex and the COX-2-celecoxib complex) were characterized. Results obtained in in silico models were consistent with in vitro experiments.

Abstract
The presence of nanoparticle fractions (<100 nm, NPs) in the food additive TiO2 (E171) rises concerns about its potential harmful impact on human health. The knowledge about the interaction of TiO2 NPs with food components is limited to proteins or polyphenols. The present paper is the first to report on interactions between TiO2 NPs and high molecular pectins that form gels in boluses and are remain nearly intact during digestion until they reach the colon. Direct interactions were studied using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy while indirect ones were monitored by measuring the "absorption" of TiO2 using a 0.2 microfiltration membrane, during in vitro digestion in a model of the gastro-intestinal tract. The FT-IR spectra registered for pectin-TiO2 NPs solutions confirmed changes in band intensities at 1020, 1100, 1610, and 1740 cm-1, suggesting interactions taking place mainly via the COO- groups. Furthermore, the I(1020)/I(1100) ratio was decreased (C-O stretching vibrations), suggesting partial blocking of the skeletal vibrations caused by interactions between pectin and TiO2. The modelled in vitro digestions confirmed that the "availability" of Ti was reduced when TiO2 NPs were combined with pectin, as compared to TiO2 NPs "digested" alone.

Abstract
Bioactive compounds from medicinal plants have applications in the development of functional foods. However, since they are unstable, encapsulation is used as a conservation alternative. This work aimed to assess the bioactive properties (antioxidant and hypoglycemic) of different extracts, including the infusion, as well as their spray-dried microencapsulates from Tecoma stans leaves. A factorial design was proposed to determine the best extraction conditions, based on ABTS and DPPH inhibition. Maltodextrin (MD), arabic gum (AG), and a 1:1 blend (MD:AG) were used as encapsulating agents. Moreover, characterization through physicochemical properties, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the best two powders based on the bioactive properties were analyzed. The results showed that the combination of stirring, water, and 5 min provided the highest inhibition to ABTS and DPPH (35.64 ± 1.25 mg Trolox/g d.s. and 2.77 ± 0.01 g Trolox/g d.s., respectively). Spray drying decreased the antioxidant activity of the extract while preserving it in the infusion. The encapsulated infusion with MD:AG had the highest hypoglycemic activity as it presented the lowest glycemic index (GI = 47). According to the results, the microencapsulates could potentially be added in foods to enhance nutritional quality and prevent/treat ailments.

Abstract
The trend toward healthier food products has led to an increase in the research of in vitro gastrointestinal digestion methods. Among the most used models, static models are the simplest. Most static models have three stages: oral, gastric, and intestinal, simulating the enzymatic, electrolyte, pH, temperature, and bile salt conditions. The studies that have taken the most notice are those related to antioxidant activity, followed by those dealing with proteins and carbohydrates using most of them static in vitro digestion models. The number of these studies has increased over the years, passing from 45 to 415 in a 10-year period (2012-2023) and showing an interest in knowing the impact of food on human health. Nevertheless, published papers report different methodologies and analytical approaches. This review discusses the similarities and differences between the published static in vitro gastrointestinal digestion methods, with a focus on carbohydrates, finding that the most used protocol is Infogest, but with differences, mainly in the type of enzymes and their activity. Regarding in vitro gastrointestinal digestion of carbohydrates, many of the published studies are related to food and biomacromolecules, being the oral phase the most omitted, while the intestinal phase in the most diverse. Other methodologies to study the intestinal phase have been recommended, but the number of in vitro digestion studies using these methodologies (RSIE and BBMV) is still scarce but could represent a good alternative to analyze carbohydrates foods when combining with Infogest. More studies are required in this area.

Abstract
Epilobium hirsutum L., commonly known as hairy willowherb, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to Europe and Asia. In Romania, the Epilobium genus includes 17 species that are used in folk medicine for various purposes. This study aimed to investigate the anti-inflammatory and antitumor potential of the optimized extract of Epilobium hirsutum (EH) in animal models. The first study investigated the anti-inflammatory properties of EH optimized extract and the model used was carrageenan-induced paw inflammation. Wistar rats were divided into three groups: negative control, positive control treated with indomethacin, and a group treated with the extract. Oxidative stress markers, cytokine levels, and protein expressions were assessed. The extract demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties comparable to those of the control group. In the second study, the antitumor effects of the extract were assessed using the tumor model of Ehrlich ascites carcinoma. Swiss albino mice with Ehrlich ascites were divided into four groups: negative, positive treated with cyclophosphamide (Cph), Group 3 treated with Cph and EH optimized extract, and Group 4 treated with extract alone. Samples from the ascites fluid, liver, and heart were analyzed to evaluate oxidative stress, inflammation, and cancer markers. The extract showed a reduction in tumor-associated inflammation and oxidative stress. Overall, the EH optimized extract exhibited promising anti-inflammatory and antitumor effects in the animal models studied. These findings suggest its potential as a natural adjuvant therapeutic agent for addressing inflammation and oxidative stress induced by different pathologies.

Abstract
This study examined the effects of methanol extract and its sub-extracts from Epilobium angustifolium on α-glucosidase and α-amylase activity. Secondary metabolites and amino acids were quantified using LC-MS/MS. Dichloromethane sub-extract displayed the highest activity and was chosen for further investigation. Despite the widespread use of E. angustifolium, genotoxicity studies were conducted to assess its safety. Dichloromethane significantly inhibited α-glucosidase (IC50 =17.340 μg/mL), making it approximately 293 times more effective than acarbose. Six known compounds, including gallic acid (1), a mixture of quercetin-3-O-α-galactoside (2a) and quercetin-3-O-α-glucoside (2b), quercetin-3-O-α-glucuronic acid (3), quercetin-3-O-α-rhamnoside (4), and kaempferol-3-O-α-rhamnoside (5) were identified. Quercetin-3-O-α-rhamnoside exhibited the highest inhibition of α-glucosidase (IC50 =1735±85 μM), making it 3.70 times more effective than acarbose. Dichloromethane also showed significant antigenotoxic activity against mutagenesis induced by NaN3, 9-AA, 4-NPD, and MNNG. Gallic acid was found in the highest abundance (13253.6931 ng/mL) in the methanolic extract. Furthermore, L-Aspartic acid was the most concentrated amino acid (363.5620 nmol/mL) in the methanolic extract.

Abstract
The aim of this work was to provide an overview of available information on the antibacterial and antifungal properties of Epilobium angustifolium extracts. A literature search of Scopus, PubMed/Medline, and Google Scholar for peer-reviewed articles published between January 2000 and June 2023 was undertaken. A total of 23 studies were eligible for inclusion in this review. Significant variation of antimicrobial activity depending on the tested species and strains, type of extract solvent, or plant organs utilized for the extract preparation was found. E. angustifolium extracts were active against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and showed antimycotic effects against the fungi of Microsporum canis and Trichophyton tonsurans and the dermatophytes Arthroderma spp. Greater susceptibility of Gram-positive than Gram-negative bacteria to fireweed extracts was found. A strong antibacterial effect was recorded for Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Micrococcus luteus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Acinetobacter baumannii including multi-drug resistant strains. E. angustifolium extract might find practical application as an antimicrobial in wound healing, components of cosmetic products for human and animals, or as food preservatives.

Abstract
The primary purpose of this work was to design and obtain a series of curcuminoid chalcone-NSAID hybrid derivatives. The ester-type hybrid compounds with ibuprofen (i), ketoprofen (ii), and naproxen (iii) were obtained in two ways, using the Claisen-Schmidt reaction and the Steglich esterification reaction. The designed molecules were successfully synthesised, and FT-IR, MS, and NMR spectroscopy confirmed their structures. Moreover, the cytotoxic effect of the sonodynamic therapy and the anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anticholinergic properties of some curcuminoid chalcones and curcuminoid chalcones hybrids were evaluated. The curcuminoid chalcone derivatives showed promising neuroprotective activity as sonosensitisers for sonodynamic therapy in the studied cell lines. Additionally, the stability of the ester-type hybrid compounds with promising activity was determined. The RP-HPLC method was used to observe the degradation of the tested compounds. Studies have shown that structural isomers of ester-type hybrid compounds (3ai, 3bi) are characterised by a similar susceptibility to degradation factors, i.e., they are extremely unstable in alkaline environments, very unstable in acidic environments, unstable in neutral environments, practically stable in oxidising environments, and photolabile in solutions and in the solid phase. These compounds maintain adequate stability in environment at pH 1.2 and 6.8, which may make them good candidates for developing formulations for oral administration.

Abstract
In this study, the effect of cold plasma (CP) on the physicochemical and biological properties of red wine was investigated in comparison with the effects of the conventional preservation method and the combined method. In addition, the effect of storage time after the application of each of the analyzed methods was evaluated. The study examined the effects of the different preservation methods on the pH, color, phenolic content, antioxidant activity and microbiological purity of the red wine. Chemometric analysis was used to discover the relationship between the preservation method used and wine quality. In the wine samples tested, a reduction in phenolic compounds and a decrease in antioxidant activity were noted after storage. This effect was mildest for preservation methods with the addition of potassium metabisulphite and those in which a mixture of helium and nitrogen was used as the working gas. On a positive note, the CP treatment did not affect the color of the wine in a way perceptible to the consumer: ∆E*—1.12 (He/N2; 5 min). In addition, the lowest growth of microorganisms was detected in the CP-treated samples. This indicates the potential of cold plasma as an alternative method to the use of potassium metabisulfite in wine production, which may contribute to its wider use in the alcohol industry in the future.

Abstract
AbstractGelatin (GEL) and whey protein isolate (WPI) are often taken into account as carriers of phytoantioxidants for developing active packaging. The materials obtained, however, have not yet been systematically compared to demonstrate their potential benefits and drawbacks. Fireweed extract (FE) is a rich source of polyphenols with high antioxidant activity. Therefore, in this study, the structural, physicochemical, and antiradical properties of GEL and WPI films incorporated with freeze-dried fireweed extract (FE; 0, 0.0125, 0.025, 0.05%) were simultaneously evaluated. As verified by X-ray diffraction, the GEL-based films were more crystalline and, consequently, mechanically stronger (~ 9–11 vs. ~ 6 MPa) and less permeable to water vapor than the WPI films (44.95–52.02 vs. 61.47–70.49 g mm m−2 day−1 kPa−1). Furthermore, GEL offered a bit more transparent, less yellow, and more stretchable films (~ 50–59% vs. ~ 26%). In turn, the WPI films had superior UV-protective potential. The higher FE concentration yielded more yellow films with improved UV-blocking ability. The FE (0.05%) made the GEL cryogel denser. Based on the half-time reduction of 2,2′-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical cation (tABTS50%), the 0.025, and 0.05% FE-supplemented WPI films exhibited ~ 1.6 and ~ 1.9 times better antiradical potential than the GEL counterparts. This result implies that the WPI-based films, being more soluble (35.12–36.74 vs. 31.51–33.21%) and less swellable (192.61–205.88 vs. 1056.93–2282.47%), ensured faster release of FE into aqueous medium. The slower building up of the antiradical activity of the FE-supplemented GEL films suggests that GEL could be more useful in the development of slow/less migratory active packaging systems for high moisture food.

Abstract
The food colorant E171 (TiO2) containing nano fractions can cause potential health problems. In the presented work, we used a "gastrointestinal tract" model (oral→large intestine) to "digest" a fruit smoothie in the presence of TiO2 nanoparticles and the Lactiplantibacillus plantarum B strain. The TiO2 migration was measured using the microfiltration membrane (0.2 µm; model of "TiO2 bioacessability"). We observed that the addition of the smoothie reduced the Ti content in the microfiltrate (reduced "bioacessability") at the "mouth", "stomach" and "large intestine" stages, probably due to the entrapment of Ti by the smoothie components. A significant decrease in Ti "bioaccessibility" at the "gastric" stage may have resulted from the agglomeration of nanoparticles at a low pH. Additionally, the presence of bacterial cells reduced the "bioaccessibility" at the "large intestine" stage. Microscopic imaging (SEM) revealed clear morphological changes to the bacterial cells in the presence of TiO2 (altered topography, shrunk-deformed cells with collapsed walls due to leakage of the content, indentations). Additionally, TiO2 significantly reduced the growth of the tested bacteria. It can be stated that the interactions (most probably entrapment) of TiO2 in the food matrix can occur during the digestion. This can influence the physicochemical properties, bioavailability and in vivo effect of TiO2. Research aimed at understanding the interactions between TiO2 and food components is in progress.

Abstract
Epilobium angustifolium L. is an ethnomedicinal plant known as a medicinal plant in many regions of the world, among others, in various skin diseases. Despite the great interest in this plant, there are still few reports of biological activity of ready-made dermatological or cosmetical preparations containing the E. angustifolium extracts. The antioxidant, anti-ageing, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial properties and toxicity, wound healing, and skin permeation of topical hydrogels containing E. angustifolium extracts (HEas) was assessed. First, the plant extracts were prepared using three solvents: 70% (v/v) ethanol, 70% (v/v) isopropanol and water, next by preparing hydrogels witch by dry extracts (HEa-EtOH), (HEa-iPrOH) and (HEa-WA), respectively. Finally, the content of selected phenolic acids in the HEas was evaluated by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). All the HEas were characterized by high antioxidant activity. The most increased antibacterial activity was observed for a strain of Streptococcus pneumoniae ATCC 49619, Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212, Enterococcus faecium, Sarcina lutea ATCC 9341 and Bacillus pseudomycoides, while the strains of Streptococcus epidermidis, Bacillus subtilis, and Staphylococcus aureus were the least sensitive. All the HEas showed a reduction in the activity of lipoxygenase enzymes, proteases, and inhibition of protein denaturation. The HEa-EtOH and HEa-iPrOH also enhanced the wound healing activity of HDF cells. Additionally, in vitro penetration studies were performed using the Franz diffusion cells. These studies showed that the active ingredients contained in E. angustifolium penetrate through human skin and accumulate in it. Furthermore, the hydrogels containing E. angustifolium extracts showed a broad spectrum of activity. Therefore, they can be considered as an interesting alternative for dermatologic and cosmetic preparations.

Abstract
Nanotechnology utilises particles of between 1 and 100 nm in size. In recent years, it has enjoyed widespread application in a variety of areas. However, this has also raised increasing concerns regarding the effects that the use of nanoparticles may have on human health. The nanoparticles of titanium dioxide (TiO2 NPs) are among the most promising nanomaterials and have already found wide use in cosmetics, medicine and, the food industry. A nano-sized (diameter < 100 nm) fraction of TiO2 is present, at a certain percentage, in the E171 ( in the EU) pigment commonly used as an additive in food, whose presence raises particular concerns in terms of its potential negative health impact. The consumption of E171 food additive is increasingly associated with disorders of the intestinal barrier, including intestinal dysbiosis. It may disrupt the normal functions of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) including: enzymatic digestion of primary nutrients (lipids, proteins, or carbohydrates). The aim of this review is to provide a comprehensive and reliable overview of studies conducted in recent years in terms of the substance's potentially negative impact on human and animal alimentary systems.

Abstract
Epilobium angustifolium L. (EA) has been used as a topical agent since ancient times. There has been an increasing interest in applying EA as a raw material used topically in recent years. However, in the literature, there are not many reports on the comprehensive application of this plant to skin care and treatment. EA contains many valuable secondary metabolites, which determine antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, and antiproliferative activity effects. One of the most important active compounds found in EA is oenothein B (OeB), which increases the level of ROS and protects cells from oxidative damage. OeB also influences wound healing and reduces inflammation by strongly inhibiting hyaluronidase enzymes and inhibiting COX-1 and COX-2 cyclooxygenases. Other compounds that play a key role in the context of application to the skin are flavonoids, which inhibit collagenase and hyaluronidase enzymes, showing anti-aging and anti-inflammatory properties. While terpenes in EA play an important role in fighting bacterial skin infections, causing, among other things cell membrane, permeability increase as well as the modification of the lipid profiles and the alteration of the adhesion of the pathogen to the animal cells. The available scientific information on the biological potential of natural compounds can be the basis for the wider use of EA in skin care and treatment. The aim of the article is to review the existing literature on the dermocosmetic use of E. angustifolium.

Abstract
Black soybean is one of the nutritious crops and is being used in traditional medicines in Asian countries. In the present study, we fermented black soybean and screened against in vitro Alzheimer’s disease (AD) biomarkers such as cholinesterase enzymes, inflammatory factors, oxidative stress, and presence of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels. Firstly, we fermented black soybean with different lactic acid bacteria (LABs) and selected the Pediococcus acidilactici as the best LAB on the basis of GABA levels in the fermentate. We have found that black soybean fermented with P. acidilactici significantly inhibited the inflammatory factors (proteinase, protein denaturation, and lipoxygenase) and cholinesterase enzymes than non-fermented samples. An increase in the antioxidant capacity (FRAP, ABTS, and DPPH), anthocyanins, phenolics, flavonoids, and GABA content was also observed in fermented samples. Moreover, UHPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS/MS technique identified 38 bioactive components, including polyphenols, amino acids, and fatty acids. Among identified components, eight bioactive compounds were quantified, and an increase in the concentration of daidzein, genistein, glycitein, (+)-catechin, quercetin, and gallic acid was observed in fermented samples. However, the concentration of rutin and soyasaponin was higher in raw samples. These results indicated that fermentation of black soybean with P. acidilactici is a promising approach that can be used to develop functional foods to inhibit/prevent AD and other neurodegenerative diseases.

The Distribution of Glucosinolates in Different Phenotypes of Lepidium peruvianum and Their Role as Acetyl- and Butyrylcholinesterase Inhibitors-In Silico and In Vitro Studies. Abstract
The aim of the study was to present the fingerprint of different Lepidium peruvianum tuber extracts showing glucosinolates-containing substances possibly playing an important role in preventinting dementia and other memory disorders. Different phenotypes of Lepidium peruvianum (Brassicaceae) tubers were analysed for their glucosinolate profile using a liquid chromatograph coupled with mass spectrometer (HPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS/MS platform). Qualitative analysis in 50% ethanolic extracts confirmed the presence of ten compounds: aliphatic, indolyl, and aromatic glucosinolates, with glucotropaeolin being the leading one, detected at levels between 0–1.57% depending on phenotype, size, processing, and collection site. The PCA analysis showed important variations in glucosinolate content between the samples and different ratios of the detected compounds. Applied in vitro activity tests confirmed inhibitory properties of extracts and single glucosinolates against acetylcholinesterase (AChE) (15.3–28.9% for the extracts and 55.95–57.60% for individual compounds) and butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) (71.3–77.2% for the extracts and 36.2–39.9% for individual compounds). The molecular basis for the activity of glucosinolates was explained through molecular docking studies showing that the tested metabolites interacted with tryptophan and histidine residues of the enzymes, most likely blocking their active catalytic side. Based on the obtained results and described mechanism of action, it could be concluded that glucosinolates exhibit inhibitory properties against two cholinesterases present in the synaptic cleft, which indicates that selected phenotypes of L. peruvianum tubers cultivated under well-defined environmental and ecological conditions may present a valuable plant material to be considered for the development of therapeutic products with memory-stimulating properties.

Abstract
Epilobium angustifolium L. is a popular medicinal plant found in many regions of the world. This plant contains small amounts of essential oil whose composition and properties have not been extensively investigated. There are few reports in the literature on the antioxidant and antifungal properties of this essential oil and the possibility of applying it as a potential promoter of the skin penetration of drugs. The essential oil was obtained by distillation using a Clavenger type apparatus. The chemical composition was analyzed by the GC-MS method. The major active compounds of E. angustifolium L. essential oil (EOEa) were terpenes, including α-caryophyllene oxide, eucalyptol, β-linalool, camphor, (S)-carvone, and β-caryophyllene. The analyzed essential oil was also characterized by antioxidant activity amounting to 78% RSA (Radical Scavenging Activity). Antifungal activity against the strains Aspergillus niger, A. ochraceus, A. parasiticum, and Penicillium cyclopium was also determined. The largest inhibition zone was observed for strains from the Aspergillus group. The EOEa enhanced the percutaneous penetration of ibuprofen and lidocaine. After a 24 h test, the content of terpene in the skin and the acceptor fluid was examined. It has been shown that the main compounds contained in the essential oil do not penetrate through the skin, but accumulate in it. Additionally, FTIR-ATR analysis showed a disturbance of the stratum corneum (SC) lipids caused by the essential oil application. Due to its rich composition and high biological activity, EOEa may be a potential candidate to be applied, for example, in the pharmaceutical or cosmetic industries. Moreover, due to the reaction of the essential oil components with SC lipids, the EOEa could be an effective permeation enhancer of topically applied hydrophilic and lipophilic drugs.

Abstract
Numerous species of Allium genus have been used in the traditional medicine based on their vast biological effects, e.g., antimicrobial, digestion stimulant, anti-sclerotic, soothing, antiradical or wound healing properties. In this work, unpolar and polar extracts from two lesser-investigated species of Allium growing in Kazakhstan, Alliumgalanthum Kar. & Kir. (AG) and A. turkestanicum Regel. (AT), were studied for their composition and biological effects. In the HPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS/MS analyses of water and alcoholic extracts simple organic acids, flavonoids and their glycosides were found to be the best represented group of secondary metabolites. On the other hand, in the GC-MS analysis diethyl ether, extracts were found to be rich sources of straight-chain hydrocarbons and their alcohols, fatty acids and sterols. The antimicrobial activity assessment showed a lower activity of polar extracts, however, the diethyl ether extract from AT bulbs and AG chives showed the strongest activity against Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633, B. cereus ATCC 10876, some species of Staphylococcus (S. aureus ATCC 25923 and S. epidermidis ATCC 12228) and all tested Candida species (Candida albicans ATCC 2091, Candida albicans ATCC 10231, Candida glabrata ATCC 90030, Candida krusei ATCC 14243 and Candida parapsilosis ATCC 22019) with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 0.125–0.5 mg/mL. The highest antiradical capacity exhibited diethyl ether extracts from AG bulbs (IC50 = 19274.78 ± 92.11 mg Trolox eq/g of dried extract) in DPPH assay. In ABTS scavenging assay, the highest value of mg Trolox equivalents, 50.85 ± 2.90 was calculated for diethyl ether extract from AT bulbs. The same extract showed the highest inhibition of mushroom tyrosinase (82.65 ± 1.28% of enzyme activity), whereas AG bulb ether extract was the most efficient murine tyrosinase inhibitor (54% of the enzyme activity). The performed tests confirm possible cosmeceutical applications of these plants.

Abstract
Epilobium hirsutum is extensively used as a traditional remedy in folk medicine, especially against prostate inflammation. Therefore, we evaluated the chemical profiles and biopharmaceutical potentials of different extracts of E. hirsutum aerial parts and roots. Metabolomic, antioxidant, and enzyme inhibitory profiles were investigated. Human prostate cancer PC3 cells were exposed to the extracts to evaluate antiproliferative effects. Gene expression and bioinformatics analyses were performed to investigate anti-inflammatory mechanisms. Oenothein B and myricetin were prominent compounds in the extracts. In scavenging/reducing assays, the methanol, infusion, and methanol/water extracts exhibited similar activities. We also observed the reduction of PC3 viability occurring following exposure to methanol and methanol/water extracts. According to bioinformatics analysis, myricetin was predicted to interact with COX-2 and TNFα. The interaction between TNFα and oxo-dihydroxy-octadecenoic acid was predicted as well. Intriguingly, the gene expression of COX-2 and TNFα was reduced in PC3 cells after exposure to methanol and methanol/water extracts. These effects were paralleled by the decreased gene expression of IL-8 and NFkB and the inhibition of PGE2 release. Therefore, the present findings suggest the potential use of E. hirsutum for the management of the burden of inflammation and oxidative stress occurring in lower urinary tract diseases, including prostatitis.
