Synthesis of magnetic chelating resins functionalized with tetraethylenepentamine for adsorption of molybdate anions from aqueous solutions

Targeted elimination of molybdenum ions from a leaching solution with the ability of radiated grafting GMA-PAN nanofibers

In this study, electrospun polyacrylonitrile nanofibers were effectively functionalized for enhanced molybdenum ion adsorption through a multi-step approach. Initially, glycidyl methacrylate was grafted onto the nanofibers via irradiation-induced grafting polymerization, followed by chemical modification with various amino groups, with triethylamine identified as the optimal modifier. The impacts of key synthesis parameters and reaction conditions on grafting level and adsorption capacity were thoroughly investigated, with a focus on achieving maximum efficiency. The resulting nanofibers were characterized using FTIR, SEM, and BET techniques, confirming the successful modification and structural features conducive to adsorption. Furthermore, a comprehensive experimental design, incorporating a central composite design, yielded optimal conditions for molybdenum adsorption, with key parameters including monomer concentration, irradiation dose, adsorbent mass, initial concentration, time, pH, temperature, and amine concentration. The adsorption kinetics were effectively described by the pseudo-second-order model, while the Langmuir isotherm model provided valuable insight into the adsorption behavior. Impressively, the adsorbent exhibited exceptional adsorption efficiency, surpassing 98% even after six adsorption-desorption cycles using 0.5 M HCl. Thermodynamic analysis revealed the exothermic nature of the adsorption process, along with decreased entropy and overall spontaneity, underlining the favorable conditions for molybdenum adsorption. Notably, the synthesized adsorbent demonstrated notable selectivity for molybdenum and achieved an impressive adsorption capacity of 109.79 mg/g, highlighting its potential for practical applications in molybdenum removal from aqueous solutions.

Methacrylate-Based Polymeric Sorbents for Recovery of Metals from Aqueous Solutions

The industrialization and urbanization expansion have increased the demand for precious and rare earth elements (REEs). In addition, environmental concerns regarding the toxic effects of heavy metals on living organisms imposed an urgent need for efficient methods for their removal from wastewaters and aqueous solutions. The most efficient technique for metal ions removal from wastewaters is adsorption due to its reversibility and high efficiency. Numerous adsorbents were mentioned as possible metal ions adsorbents in the literature. Chelating polymer ligands (CPLs) with adaptable surface chemistry, high affinity towards targeted metal ions, high capacity, fast kinetics, chemically stable, and reusable are especially attractive. This review is focused on methacrylate-based magnetic and non-magnetic porous sorbents. Special attention was devoted to amino-modified glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) copolymers. Main adsorption parameters, kinetic models, adsorption isotherms, thermodynamics of the adsorption process, as well as regeneration of the polymeric sorbents were discussed.

A Review of Adsorbents for Heavy Metal Decontamination: Growing Approach to Wastewater Treatment

Heavy metal is released from many industries into water. Before the industrial wastewater is discharged, the contamination level should be reduced to meet the recommended level as prescribed by the local laws of a country. They may be poisonous or cancerous in origin. Their presence does not only damage people, but also animals and vegetation because of their mobility, toxicity, and non-biodegradability into aquatic ecosystems. The review comprehensively discusses the progress made by various adsorbents such as natural materials, synthetic, agricultural, biopolymers, and commercial for extraction of the metal ions such as Ni2+, Cu2+, Pb2+, Cd2+, As2+ and Zn2+ along with their adsorption mechanisms. The adsorption isotherm indicates the relation between the amount adsorbed by the adsorbent and the concentration. The Freundlich isotherm explains the effective physical adsorption of the solute particle from the solution on the adsorbent and Langmuir isotherm gives an idea about the effect of various factors on the adsorption process. The adsorption kinetics data provide valuable insights into the reaction pathways, the mechanism of the sorption reaction, and solute uptake. The pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models were applied to describe the sorption kinetics. The presented information can be used for the development of bio-based water treatment strategies.

Inhibition of Q235 Carbon Steel by Calcium Lignosulfonate and Sodium Molybdate in Carbonated Concrete Pore Solution

The inhibition effect and mechanism of a compound calcium lignosulfonate (CLS) and sodium molybdate inhibitors for Q235 carbon steel in simulated carbonated concrete pore solution (pH 11.5) with 0.02 mol/L NaCl are studied using electrochemical and surface analysis techniques. The results show that in carbonated simulated concrete pore (SCP) solution CLS and Na₂MoO₄ show a synergistic inhibition effect. The compound inhibitor can be defined as mix-type inhibitor. With 400 ppm CLS plus 600 ppm Na₂MoO₄, the pitting potential moves positively about 200 mV, and the inhibition efficiency reaches 92.67%. After 24 h immersion, the IE% further increases up to 99.2%. The surface analysis results show that Na₂MoO₄ could promote stability of the passive film, and the insoluble molybdenum compounds and CaO/Ca(OH)₂, together with adsorbed CLS, deposit on the steel surface, forming a complex film. The compounded film effectively inhibits corrosion of the steel.

Preparation of a surface-grafted imprinted ceramic membrane for selective separation of molybdate anion from water solutions

A surface-grafted imprinted ceramic membrane (IIP-PVI/CM) for recognizing molybdate (Mo(VI)) anion was prepared by surface-initiated graft-polymerization. Firstly, raw alumina ceramic membrane (CM) was deposited with SiO₂ active layer by situ hydrolysis deposition method. Subsequently, γ-methacryloxy propyl trimethoxyl silane (MPS) was used as a coupling agent to introduce double bonds onto the SiO₂ layer (MPS-CM). Then, 1-vinylimidazole (VI) was employed as a functional monomer to graft-polymerization onto the MPS-CM (PVI-CM). During the graft-polymerization, the influence factors of grafting degree of PVI were investigated in detail. Under optimum conditions (monomer concentration 20wt%, temperature 70°C, initiator amount 1.1wt% and reaction time 8h), the grafting degree of 20.39g/100g was obtained. Further, Mo(VI) anion was used as a template to imprint in the PVI-CM by employing 1,6-dibromohexane as a cross-linking agent, and then Mo(VI) was removed, obtaining the IIP-PVI/CM with many imprinted cavities for Mo(VI). Thereafter, static adsorption and dynamic separation properties of IIP-PVI/CM for Mo(VI) were studied. Results indicate that IIP-PVI/CM shows a specific selectivity for Mo(VI) with the adsorption capacity of 0.69mmol/100g, and the selectivity coefficient of IIP-PVI/CM is 7.48 for molybdate to tungstate anions. During the dynamic separation, IIP-PVI/CM has also good selectivity for separation of Mo(VI) and W(VI) anions.

Rapid and selective separation of molybdenum ions using a novel magnetic Mo(vi) ion imprinted polymer: a study of the adsorption properties

In this work, we have developed a convenient method for the rapid and selective separation of Mo(vi) from aqueous solution by using a novel magnetic Mo(vi) ion imprinted polymer (Mo(vi)-MIIP) as the sorbent.
