Recent advances on inactivation of waterborne pathogenic microorganisms by (photo) electrochemical oxidation processes: Design and application strategies

Photo-electrochemical oxidation flow system for stormwater herbicides removal: Operational conditions and energy consumption analysis

Photoelectrochemical oxidation (PECO) is a promising advanced technology for treating micropollutants in stormwater. However, it is important to understand its operation prior to practical validation. In this study, we introduced a flow PECO system designed to evaluate its potential for full-scale applications in herbicides degradation, providing valuable insights for future large-scale implementations. The PECO flow reactor demonstrated the ability to treat a larger volume of stormwater (675 mL, approximately 10 times more than previous batch experiments) with effective removal rates of 92 % for diuron and 22 % for atrazine over 6 h of operation at 2 V. To address the large volume issue in stormwater treatment, a multiple module parallel application design is being considered to increase the treatment capacity of the PECO flow reactor. During the flow reactor operations, flow rate was found to have a notable impact on removal performance, particularly for diuron. At a flow rate of 610 mL min-1, approximately 90 % removal of diuron was achieved, while at 29 mL min-1, the removal efficiency decreased to 60 %. While light intensity had minimal effect on diuron degradation (all settings achieved over 90 % removal), it enhanced atrazine degradation from 9 % to 31 % with an increase in intensity from 63 mW cm-2 to 144 mW cm-2. Remarkably, the PECO flow system exhibited excellent removal performance (>90 % removal) for diuron even at extremely high initial pollutant concentrations (240 μg L-1), demonstrating its capacity to handle varying contaminant loads in stormwater. Energy consumption analysis revealed that flow rate as the primary factor influenced the specific energy consumption rate. Higher flow rate (e.g., 610 mL min-1) were preferable in flow reactor due to its well-balanced performance between removal and energy consumption. These findings confirm that the PECO flow system offers an efficient and promising approach for stormwater treatment applications.

A pilot scale of electrochemical integrated treatment technology and equipment driven by solar energy for decentralized domestic sewage treatment

Based on the natural air diffusion electrode (NADE) cathode, a solar-driven electrochemical integrated sewage treatment technology and equipment in a pilot scale was developed to treat dispersed rural wastewater. The non-aeration NADE had efficient and stable H2O2 production performance, maintaining the H2O2 output between 1474 and 1535 mg h-1 within 50 h with the current efficiency of 77.4%-80.6%. This electrochemical integrated wastewater treatment system was coupled with technologies such as dual-cathode electro-Fenton, peroxi-coagulation and photoelectro-Fenton, which effectively improved the conversion and utilization efficiency of H2O2. It integrated Fenton-like oxidation, electro-oxidation and UV/H2O2, as well as Fe(OH)3-dominated flocculation, which could effectively remove various pollutants in wastewater. The integrated sewage treatment equipment (500 L d-1) realized the effective treatment of a rural decentralized domestic sewage, achieving simultaneous removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD), NH3-N, total phosphorus (TP) and bacteria. Driven by solar energy, its application feasibility, superiority and stability have been proved, providing theoretical and technical support for the efficient and low-consumption treatment of dispersed organic wastewater.

Removal of antibiotic resistant bacteria in wastewater by aggregation-induced emission photosensitizer

The spread of antibiotic resistant bacteria from wastewater to the environment will pose serious threats to human health. It is a potential solution to prepare photosensitizers with broad-spectrum antibacterial activity for use in the photo-oxidation process to supplement the wastewater treatment system. Here, an aggregation-induced emission photosensitizer with D-π-A structure (TBTPy) has been reasonably designed and successfully developed. TBTPy can generate singlet oxygen with extraordinarily high efficiency under white-light irradiation owing to the small singlet-triplet energy gap. TBTPy has a rapid and efficient photo-oxidative killing effect on bacteria and fungi (such as MRSA, S. aureus, E. coli and C. albicans). TBTPy kills bacteria by binding to bacterial surface and releasing singlet oxygen to destroy cell membrane, leading to leakage of bacterial genetic material. This successful case can provide practical guidance for the subsequent development of AIE photosensitizers.

Investigation of BiVO4-based advanced oxidation system for decomposition of organic compounds and production of reactive sulfate species

Growth of population and expansion of industries lead to increasing contamination of environment with various organic pollutants. If not properly cleaned, wastewater contaminates freshwater resources, aquatic environment and has huge negative impact on ecosystems, quality of drinking water and human health, therefore new and effective purification systems are in demand. In this work bismuth vanadate-based advanced oxidation system (AOS) for the decomposition of organic compounds and production of reactive sulfate species (RSS) was investigated. Pure and Mo-doped BiVO₄ coatings were synthesized using sol-gel process. Composition and morphology of coatings were characterized using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy techniques. Optical properties were analyzed using UV-vis spectrometry. Photoelectrochemical performance was studied using linear sweep voltammetry, chronoamperometry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. It was shown that increase in Mo content affects the morphology of BiVO₄ films, reduces charge transfer resistance and enhances the photocurrent in the solutions of sodium borate buffer (with and without glucose) and Na₂SO₄. Mo-doping of 5-10 at.% leads to 2- to 3-fold increase in photocurrents. Faradaic efficiencies of RSS formation ranged between 70 and 90 % for all samples irrespective of Mo content. All studied coatings demonstrated high stability in long-lasting photoelectrolysis. In addition, effective light-assisted bactericidal performance of the films in deactivation of Gram positive Bacillus sp. bacteria was demonstrated. Advanced oxidation system designed in this work can be applied in sustainable and environmentally friendly water purification systems.

Three-dimensional structured electrode for electrocatalytic organic wastewater purification: Design, mechanism and role

Considering the growing need in decentralized water treatment, the application of electrocatalytic processes (EP) to achieve organic wastewater purification will be dominant in the near future due to high efficiency, small reactor assembly as well as the flexibility of operation and management. The catalytic performance of electrode materials determines the development of this technology. Among them, the unique three-dimensional (3D) structure electrode shows better performance than two-dimensional (2D) electrode in increasing mass transfer, enhancing adsorption and exposing more active sites. Hence, this review starts with the introduction of definition, classification, advantages and disadvantages of 3D electrode materials. Then a critical discussion on the design and construction of 3D electrode materials for organic wastewater purification application is provided. Next, the removal mechanism of organic pollutants on the surface of 3D electrode, the role of 3D structure, the design of reactor with 3D electrode, the conversion and toxicity of degradation products, electrode energy efficiency, stability and cost, are comprehensively reviewed. At last, current challenges and future perspectives for the development of 3D electrode materials are addressed. We deem that this review will provide a valuable insight into the design and application of 3D electrodes in environmental water purification.

Boosting generation of reactive oxygen and chlorine species on TNT photoanode and Ni/graphite fiber cathode towards efficient oxidation of ammonia wastewater

Photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) process combining the merits of photocatalysis and electrocatalysis is considered as a promising ammonia oxidation technology for water treatment. However, some key issues, such as the limited in situ generation of oxidants on photoanode, slow mass transfer problem and generation of nitrate/nitrite by-products hinder the further application of PEC process in the treatment of ammonia pollutant. In this study, the graphite felt (GF) cathodes modified by different transition metals (Ni, Fe, Mn, Co, Cu) were screened by physicochemical and photoelectrochemical characterizations. The results show that the Ni-GF cathode with more Ni⁰ uniformly distributed on the GF surface had the best electrocatalytic activity to generate H₂O₂. The PEC system composed of 10.0 wt% Ni-GF cathode and optimized titania nanotubes (TNTs) photoanode selectively converted about 96.1% ammonia to N₂ within 90 min. Compared with the single TNTs photoanode system, the ammonia oxidation reaction rate constant of the synergistic PEC oxidation system was increased by about two times, which demonstrated the role of the oxidants simultaneously generated on both anode and cathode. The in situ generated reactive oxygen-based oxidants and chlorine-based oxidants interacted together, and ClO• acted a leading role in the ammonia oxidation which were confirmed by quenching and probe experiments. In addition, the contributions of •OH and ClO• were significantly improved in the synergistic PEC oxidation system, compared with the single TNTs photoanode system. Furthermore, the nitrate by-products generated by the ammonia oxidation were further reduced on the Ni-GF cathode. The large amount of active chlorine and active oxygen generated on the electrode diffused into the bulk, effectively overcoming the mass transfer limitation of direct oxidation. Therefore, the developed TNTs photoanode/Ni-GF cathode system can continuously and efficiently convert ammonia to N₂ without the formation of nitrate/nitrite by-products.

Optimized titania nanotubes photoanode mediated photoelectrochemical oxidation of ammonia in highly chlorinated wastewater via Cl-based radicals

Efficient removal of low-concentration ammonia from chlorinated wastewater is a challenge for decentralized wastewater treatment due to its notorious environmental effect and lethal influence on aquaculture. Photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) oxidation process is considered as an efficient and environment-friendly approach, whereas a low-cost and stable photoanode is crucial. In this study, TiO₂ nanotubes (TNTs) photoanode (Ar-TNT-500 °C) with excellent physicochemical and photoelectrochemical properties was prepared by optimizing the parameters of anodization, including the voltage/times of anodization and the atmosphere/temperature of heat treatment. During the synthesis, the electrochemical and heat treatment processes promoted the formation of oxygen vacancies (O_V) on the TNTs surface and enhanced its electrocatalytic activity. The optimized Ar-TNT-500 °C photoanode could selectively convert ammonia to N₂ (86%) and a small amount of nitrate (14%). Radical quenching and probe experiments confirmed that the ClO produced by rapid quenching of OH and Cl by free chlorine dominated the selective degradation of ammonia in the synergistic process of photocatalysis and electrocatalysis. The cycle of chlorine-based radicals (ClO and Cl) and Cl^- provided a continuous and efficient ammonia oxidation system, because chlorine-based radicals could efficiently and selectively oxidize ammonia and reduce the production of toxic (per) chlorate.

Engineering hierarchical FeS2/TiO2 nanotubes on Ti mesh as a tailorable flow-through catalyst belt for all-day-active degradation of organic pollutants and pathogens

The increasing organic and microbiological pollutions in fresh water caused by human activities and industrial development have become a global concern nowadays. In this study, three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical FeS₂/TiO₂ structures with nanotube geometries were grown on a Ti mesh (M-TNTAs-FeS₂). Benefitting from the abundant available reactive sites on the open 3D micro/nanoporous structures, excellent photocatalytic activity of FeS₂/TiO₂ heterostructure in solar light, and satisfactory Fenton activity of FeS₂, the obtained M-TNTAs-FeS₂ exhibits outstanding performance as an all-day-active catalyst. Importantly, flexible meshes can be easily tailored and enveloped into fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) pockets in a series as a flow-through belt for large-capacitance applications (998 L m^-2 at a flow rate of 417 L m^-2 h^-1 for a four-pockets belt), as indicated by the degradation of azo dyes, antibiotics, pesticides, and pathogens. This study may inspire a new tailorable catalyst design for a promising point-of-use purification device.

Chlorine dioxide-based oxidation processes for water purification：A review

Chlorine dioxide (ClO₂) has emerged as a broad-spectrum, safe, and effective disinfectant due to its high oxidation efficiency and reduced formation of organochlorinated by-products during application. This article provides an updated overview of ClO₂-based oxidation processes used in water treatment. A systematic review of scientific information and experimental data on ClO₂-based water purification procedures is presented. Concerning ClO₂-based oxidation derivative problems, the pros and cons of ClO₂-based combined processes are assessed and disinfection by-product (DBP) control approaches are proposed. The kinetic and mechanistic data on ClO₂ reactivity towards micropollutants are discussed. ClO₂ selectively reacts with electron-rich moieties (anilines, phenols, olefins, and amines) and eliminates certain inorganic ions and microorganisms with high efficiency. The formation of chlorite and chlorate during the oxidation process is a crucial concern when utilizing ClO₂. Future applications include the combination of ClO₂ with ferrous ions, activated carbon, ozone, UV, visible light, or persulfate processes. The combined process can reduce by-product generation while still ensuring ClO₂ sterilization and disinfection. Overall, this research could provide useful information and new insights into the application of ClO₂-based technologies.

Highly Efficient Electrochemical Production of Hydrogen Peroxide Using the GDE Technology

This work examines the role of oxygen supply in the improvement of the hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) electrochemical production efficiency and the generation of high H₂O₂ concentrations in electrochemical processes operated in a discontinuous mode. To conduct this study, a highly efficient Printex L6 carbon-based gas diffusion electrode (GDE) as a cathode was employed for the electrogeneration of H₂O₂ in a flow-by reactor and evaluated the effects of lowering the operation temperature (to increase solubility) and increasing the air supply in the system on H₂O₂ electrogeneration. The results obtained in this study show that unlike what is expected in flow-through reactors, the efficiency in the H₂O₂ production is not affected by the solubility of oxygen when GDE is employed in the electrochemical process (using the flow-by reactor); i.e., the efficiency of H₂O₂ production is not significantly dependent on O₂ solubility, temperature, and pressure. The application of the proposed PL6C-based GDE led to the generation of accumulated H₂O₂ of over 3 g L^-1 at a high current density. It should be noted, however, that the application of the electrocatalyst at lower current densities resulted in higher energy efficiency in terms of H₂O₂ production. Precisely, a specific production of H₂O₂ as high as 131 g kWh^-1 was obtained at 25 mA cm^-2; the energy efficiency (in terms of H₂O₂ production) values obtained in this study based on the application of the proposed GDE in a flow-by reactor at low current densities were found to be within the range of values recorded for H₂O₂ production techniques that employ flow-through reactors.
